Apparently, this is the place to eat in Wheeling! Coleman's Fish Market is on all kinds of best-of lists. I'm usually somewhat hesitant to eat fish in a landlocked state, but I gave it a go once I saw the long line of people that overflowed from the entrance of Coleman's. All of these West Virginians standing in a queue can't be wrong, right? [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is tiny and is a to-go joint only.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's located in Centre Market in downtown Wheeling, so once you get your food, you can wander around the market to find a table, or split and take your food elsewhere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Once you enter Coleman's, you'll see two lines: one is just for basic orders, like sandwiches, and the other one is for special orders. But you can order basic things in the special line, I think? I don't know -- I just got in the first line I saw and ordered a fish sandwich. There were a lot of locals there who looked like they knew what they were doing. It would be wise to ask someone what to do, if you're unsure. The fish sandwich is literally just a big piece of breaded and fried white fish between two pieces of white bread. If you want anything else -- sauce, coleslaw -- you need to order it separately. But I didn't know what I was doing, so I just got the dry sandwich by itself. If I were to do it again, I'd order the deluxe fish sandwich, which comes with "sauce" (I have no idea what kind of sauce because Coleman's doesn't feel the need to disclose that information on its menu), and then I'd order coleslaw to add to the sandwich. The fish? It was excellent. Nicely fried but not greasy at all. The line was long but moved pretty quickly. While I was in line, I heard other people repeatedly order egg rolls, so of course I had to get one. It turns out that the egg rolls here are just egg rolls and nothing special -- like the kind you get at Costco. But! They only cost a buck fifty, so if you're in need of a cheap snack, there you go. You can buy live lobsters here, too. They're in a tank. While I was waiting for my order, I chatted with a woman who was super excited about the lobsters in the tank, and kept telling me that she just wanted to pet them. "I think you can only buy those lobsters to eat," I told her. But she just wanted to stick her hand in the tank and pet the lobsters, and asked the people behind the counter if she could pay them money to pet the lobsters. They said no. Local family fish market and restaurant in the old downtown. Staff is friendly and helpful in a casual atmosphere. Food is good and homemade. You can get the fish sandwich on a bun or traditional white bread. The alligator soup is more like a vegetable soup with some alligator in it. It was good but couldn't really taste the alligator. There are two different lines with two different menus. Standard line is quick and the specially line may take up to 15 minutes to prepare. Also, you want to order things from both menus, you have to wait in each individual line and pay separately (although the lines are right next to each other and the cash registers are right next to each other), not sure why. read more

Stopped at Coleman's Fish Market to grab lunch on my way from Cleveland to West Virginia. Coleman's is located inside Central Market, which has a couple of other food related businesses. Coleman's is both a full service fish market and a fish restaurant. You order and pickup your food and there are tables to eat in the market area. The menu is what you would expect, fish and some seafood, fried or broiled in various forms. I ordered the Canadian white fish sandwich and the oyster stew. Food took a little while to come up; once the order is ready you receive it packed to go. The fish sandwich was 3 good sized pieces of fresh fish, breaded and fried served on pieces of commercial white bread, no tarter sauce of other accoutrements. The fish itself was excellent, very mild and flakey, well cooked and a generous portion, I would have liked the option of some kind of sauce and better bread or bun. I also would have preferred either a batter coating or some kind of more interesting breading to add more flavor. The oyster stew was also a generous serving of boiled oysters in a very thin oyster broth. The broth had good flavor but had a very simple flavor profile. The oysters were fresh and tasty. Overall a good value for the price. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Coleman's does a nice job of providing good value, simple fish and seafood items in a casual atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Flavors were good if a bit simple and straightforward; personally, I prefer a bit more diverse flavor, but it is hard to fault them from what they do. It is a great place and in a cute part of Wheeling![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We visited later in the afternoon on Christmas Eve, so they were out of a lot of items. However, what we did get was superb. We ate two of the fish sandwiches, wedge fries, and the pub fries. Everything was so good! Will definitely visit next time we are in the Wheeling area to try more of the menu. I really like this place a lot. As some other reviews noted, for a fried fish counter, it's absolutely fantastic. There are a lot of things to do in Wheeling, and if you are out and about for lunch, this establishment is a must visit. They also sell a ton of seafood to the locals; for a short visit, a cooler might be in order to take stuff home. I ordered a fish sandwich and onion rings, they gave me the deluxe fish sandwich instead, no big deal (just a different roll with a side of tartar), both were fantastic. My only regret is I didn't try other items like their clam chowder, egg rolls, fries, etc. I found myself looking at other tables, full of locals, wondering if I was going wrong as a visitor. But they all had a wide spread, nothing in particular, but, most customers had a fish sandwich as a main. Based on that, for newbies, I recommend going fish sandwich as the main, and pick a side that you are feeling. On that note, I'd love to visit with a large group, order a bunch of items, and try them all. I'm going to branch out on my next visit, because I bet all of their food is fabulous. I will note, the only downside, I was here about a decade ago and the prices have gone up substantially. A deluxe fish sandwich, onion rings, and Diet Coke came to just under 15 bucks. If I were rating this as a full restaurant, no 5. But as a seafood counter for a sandwich, 5. The white fish sandwich was just delicious, hot, tender, flaky, expertly fried, and it was huge. And cheap. Be sure to ask about the deluxe, as the plain version is very basic, although there are condiments available. They have soups and a variety of seafood dishes too. I was once again reminded today of why I do NOT go to Coleman's Fish. It's been very crazy at work today. I left for a few minutes and went to Centre Market to get a mental break. I then thought, "Oh probably should get a fish sandwich for each of us" ('my husband and me) so I go to Colemans. No line at all. Ordered 2 fish sandwiches and one cup of fries. Number is 1697. Ok, then step away from the counter and wait for number to be called. 7 minutes later it is called, but someone else is at the register - so I didn't go up until they paid and left. After they leave, I say, "I am 1697" - and the lady looks like I have two heads. "Huh? Who called your number?" I don't know but I heard it - and another customer says, "Yeah I heard it too." Hmmmm - my bag must have literally vanished into thin air. OK, so while I am paying, I'd also like to add two bottles of Diet Pepsi. "Well, I will re-ring it." Guess what, now my number is 1704! So I am put again at the BACK of the line because 1) my bag literally vanished in the span of 45 seconds and 2) I added 2 bottles of Pepsi. OKAAAYYYY. Worth getting off the highway for, even if you've got no other reason to visit Wheeling. I got their regular fish sandwich & cole slaw, both really, really, good, and their deviled crab which was decent, just not my thing. The people behind the counter were so nice, as were the residents of Wheeling. If you go, unless you're ordering something from their "Special Menu," look for the sign near the double doors that says regular orders here, get in that line to order your fish sandwich. Coleman's is a sit down restaurant and a fresh fish market. The Wheeling Central Market is a historic market that has been around for a long time. I travel frequently and Coleman's is one of the best seafood locations in the country in terms of taste and value for the money. Be sure to get in the right line! We had to ask the locals where we should be standing because the line was long and no one knew where to go. It was clear who were locals and who weren't (aka the people with confused looks, like us!) We ordered from the line on the right, which is the standard menu line. I was surprised that the fish sandwich I had heard so many rave reviews about was on plain white, untoasted bread that came in a bag with one napkin and a plastic fork. And let me tell you - it was delicious. Perfectly cooked, flaky, tender, amazing breading. The best tartar sauce I've ever eaten. The thick cut fries were perfect with the sandwich. The chowder was perfectly seasoned and delicious. A place to sit may be hard to come by. So divide and conquer if possible by allowing one person to order and another to scout out a seat. Coleman's Fish Market smelled heavenly. I am not a huge seafood person, and found the aroma noticing. The market is located inside the Wheeling City Centre Market. The prices were reasonable. You can purchase to go or have them cook it up fresh. Got 3 fish sandwiches, some fries and Mac and Cheese. The Mac is nothing special, the fries are seasoned and have a good flavor. The fish sandwich is hot and fresh. You get two nice size filets. We get the bun vs the white bread. They have been there for a really long time and there is always a line at lunch. It's my dad's favorite place and at 96 I was able to get him out of the house to go have a Coleman's fish sandwich. I highly recommend them and so does my dad! read more

The simplicity of the fish and clams make the experience even better. I always get a clam boat, fish sandwich and clam chowder. There are several other items on the menu, but those are the TOP BEST. The fish sandwiches have several pieces of fish piled on white bread. You have the option of ordering tarter sauce and cocktail sauce. On the side you can get ketchup and other condiments by the napkins and utensils. This is located in the downtown area of Wheeling, West Virginia. The surrounding areas are not too busy, so usually this market is where its at! The seating is limited, but I usually always have a spot;most people take it to go. They have outdoor seating as well! Visited wheeling and was told by multiple locals that cColeman's was the place to go. Unfortunately I listened. The fish was about as flavorful as a sweaty gym sock, took 30 minutes to arrive at a temperature slightly above lukewarm, and they charge extra to put it on a cheap, stale wheat bun (as opposed to mashed slices of plain white bread). Have been enjoying their food for many years. My husband loved their fish sandwiches and purchased them for his employees many years ago when he ran a construction business. At that time the sandwiches were like 50 cents a piece. So he was a fan for many, many years. As my husband became ill and mostly housebound, it was always a treat to get Coleman's after a Dr visit or when I could get a reason to stop by. He would usually refuse going anyplace else, but never there! Still love them, altho, they're getting pricey with all the cost increases on everything in supply chains. I truly find it sad... Folks at Coleman's, please look at a wonderful place like Wholeys (in Pittsburgh) for inspiration and aspirations. The fish market used to be a place with good food and Quick Service. However, they're quick to take your order very slow in giving you your order. You will find that people behind you who order even more food than you have can get their orders quicker. My suggestion is do not order just a sandwich and fries because they'll make you stand and wait forever. But if you have five or six sandwiches clam chowder coleslaw or any other large order you can bet you will get it first. I've lived in Wheeling all my life and I have been eating at the fish market for 55 years and has done nothing but go downhill. Good luck if you eat there. read more

Yelp! and Roadfood made this sound like it was a restaurant that served really good fish sandwiches. Alas, it's not. It's a restaurant with a really good deep fryer, and one of the things they happen to stick in that deep fryer is fish. The results are only so-so. The underlying fish meat isn't that delectable, and the sandwich needed a LOT more tartar sauce to counteract the bland mealiness of the batter. (Tartar sauce is distributed only in small packets for an extra fee, so it's not simple to add more yourself once you realize you need it.) We split a sandwich between the two of us and still didn't finish it. That said, the fried sides are quite good. (It's that deep fryer again!) Onion rings are crunchy but still have an oniony bite. "Jojo potatoes" are crunchy/tender and quite satisfying. I certainly wouldn't stop here for those alone, but since we were already stuck there, they saved us from going hungry. read more
