As a native of Pittsburgh who moved away over 20 years ago, I went to Wholey's during a recent trip back to Pittsburgh to experience the great tradition again. Wholey & Co. is a historic Pittsburgh seafood market, established in 1912, known for its vast selection of fresh, frozen, and live seafood, meats, and poultry, plus a popular hot food counter famous for its large fish sandwiches. Located in the Strip District, Wholey's offers a traditional market experience with live lobster tanks and a deli, alongside online ordering and delivery services, and is a city staple for both locals and visitors like me Outside a vendor was serving lobster rolls. We wanted the pre-made ones. We walked around the store observing the large array of fresh seafood, looking for the lobster rolls. We found the live lobsters , with someone holding one. Fun! Finally we found the case with the lobster rolls and sat down to enjoy them. They were quite tasty! . read more

We had high hopes for the sushi here and we were not disappointed. Our sushi chef was lovely. Very cool guy. He sliced and diced with so much ease and made us a beautiful salmon with pineapple roll. It was also amazing fresh. We went upstairs to the dining room which kinda lacks ambiance but it's worth having the food that fresh. Great experience just remember it closes at 4pm and 5pm most days. read more

Very high quality and fresh meat, seafood, and produce. The hot line is fried goodness of all sorts. I ordered a little fish sandwich one day and the larger the next day. Absolutely delicious because of the freshness of the product. Next time I am in Pittsburgh I am doing a fish and chips tour and I'll start out here. Highly recommend! read more

Great market we stumbled on while in Pittsburgh. Lunch was great. Great Lobster Mac. Lobster bisque was decent. Order at the counter and then take your food upstairs to eat. Friendly staff. read more

During a visit to the Strip District, my parents and I wondered why there were so many people going in and out of this corner market. So of course, we had to check it out! While the outside of the building is plain looking, the inside is bustling and full of fresh seafood. The prepared food area had a separate entrance. Once we found it, we were greeted with a friendly staffer who told us the most popular item was the 1/2lb cod sandwich, so we ordered that and the lobster bisque. The cod was battered and fried fresh to order. There's a dining area upstairs which provides a nice place to enjoy your food. The cod was outstanding; lobster bisque was just okay. Would recommend a visit to Wholey's if you like seafood. read more

This market is so sweet like being sent back in time. We stopped here, since it was a place I would visit as a kid and I wanted to show my husband. We ended up getting lunch here and grab bread and a few dips and drinks to enjoy outside. It was the perfect lunch to take things slow and enjoy the city. They have a hot food market inside but we wanted something easy and lighter. The market has fresh fish, deli section and more! read more

Fun place to eat and get groceries! We walked around and checked out the fish selection and grocery store. They even give you free ice to make your food to go. We then went back in the entrance to order food. The prices are reasonable for the quantity of food you get. I ordered the whaler fish sandwich for my husband and it was huge. The kids enjoyed the homemade chips and the crab and lobster bisque had plenty of chunks of seafood. They have a dining room on the upper level and the guy gave our kids coloring sheets while they waited. No line on a Thursday afternoon too. read more

My husband is from Pittsburgh and has been coming here for years, so we always stop in when we're in town. Everything is fresh and delicious, definitely get the clam chowder! We usually get a fish sandwich and sit in the good-sized dining area upstairs, but there's also a retail area with all kinds of seafood and related items. Don't let the line out the door deter you, it goes quickly and it's worth the wait read more

I had some of the best sushi ever at Andy's sushi cart inside of Wholey's. The rainbow roll was so fresh and came with a ton of raw fish on top. The strip district roll was unreal! Salmon skin, eel, teriyaki sauce. Woooow. So delicious I could eat three boxes of this alone haha. Andy is also such a character. When he found out it was our first time trying his sushi he gave us a free sample of some delicious tuna with a bunch of sauces. So good. Can't wait to go back! read more

The hot food sucks. It was dry and when I left a comment card I never heard anything back. The clam chowder had a sweet almost sour flavor to it Just today I went in and bought sushi. When I checked my credit card slip they didn't charge me the correct price listed on the board either. When I called they tried giving me another phone number to call. Is it possible to get gold food or service anywhere anymore. So much for a Pittsburgh gem. Guess I should've learned my lesson the last time. read more

Wholey's fish market is a whole Pittsburgh experience that you HAVE to try! This is definitely an infamous spot where you will find a lot of locals. The restaurant is located inside a little fish market where you can purchase fresh seafood! The line was literally outside of the door to get in. Lent is an especially busy time of year for them so be prepared to wait. There is free parking across the street from the main doors. Once you order your food, you wait for them to prepare it for you, pay at the cash register and you can walk upstairs to their cozy little dining area. The fish was delicious! It is hand battered and deep fried. Next time i would like to try their oysters. Their crab cakes do contain bell peppers (if you have an allergy). Fish is fried in corn oil. Sandwiches are served with a side of chips but you can always upgrade to lobster mac and cheese (they have 2 types), french fries, or another side. Only one type of fish comes broiled. I got the lent special halushki (not pictured). It could have used a little more seasoning. Protip: you can always ask for them to make you fresh fish. read more

Had a wonderful late lunch today. I got the fried cod sandwich. It's a half pound of fresh fish on your choice of bakery roll. It was fantastic. I also got a order of fries that they sprinkle with wing dust. Also very good. My friends got sushi from Andy's stand right inside the door and absolutely loved it. Don't miss the opportunity to check out all the fresh fish they have here. It's definitely a Pittsburgh experience. read more

Just discovered this place on my last trip to Pittsburgh and it's enough to make me want to move there. I didn't try any of the prepared food because it was too early in the morning for a fish sandwich, but the fish counter was inspirational! So much beautiful fish for a good price! I got four of the sweetest little lobster tails and cooked them up with steak for dinner. I bought a cup of a dozen shucked oysters for a great price - will fry them up soon. Grocery section so well stocked, produce wonderfully fresh. What a treat! read more

Wholey's is a great place when in Pittsburgh. They are a market with a wonderful seafood deli....or a great seafood deli with a market. They are an institution in PIttsburgh. Their deli is wonderful. They have everything seafood. They serve soups, sandwiches, sides, lobster mac & cheese, and chicken. Everything caught from the sea almost. There is one line to get in. The line moves quickly. The workers in there were nice. I picked up a cod sandwich and an oyster po boy. The cod sandwich was stuffed with cod fillets. You have a choice of soft, mancini, or wheat bun. We were too embarassed to ask what the first two breads were. So, we chose the wheat bun for the cod sandwich. It was big and tasty. The oyster po boy was filled with oysters on a French baguette. It was a good sandwich. Since we were visiting, there was no need to check out the market. If I lived in the area, I think I would be here every week. read more

SERVICE: Staff was cool and kept things moving. Parking is always rough as it's located downtown in the Strip District. Great market for frozen fresh seafood on the right and hot, ready to serve on the left side of the building with restaurant seating down below. Local favorite and a must try! Note, lines can be long sometimes pushing outside. FOOD: Fish was thick and delicious. I could have the flavor go up a hair but still good. WELL: Will definitely return for another fish sandwich and you should too! read more

Wholey's is a really grocery store that is also a fantastic fish and meat market. Wholey's (Robert Wholey & Co. Inc.) market has been in business since 1912 and have to relocated a couple times until it moved to its current location in the Strip District in 1959. They've got an impressive amount and variety of seafood both fresh, alive, and frozen with Tuna, Cod, Haddock, Salmon, Swordfish, Halibut, Mahi Mahi, Flounder, Sole, Blue Fish, assorted clams, Chilean Sea Bass, Bronzini, Scup, Orange Roughy, Spanish Mackerel, Sardines, Striped Bass, Ocean Perch, Shad, Smelts, Whole Caribbean Red Snapper, Baccala Salt Cod, Grouper, Lobster, Crab, Squid, Octopus, and much more. In addition you'll find Walleye/Yellow Pike, Catfish, Rainbow Trout, Frog Legs, Escargot, Alligator, and lots more. They've also got an impressive number of fish tanks with lots of live fish and they'll deliver around PA & Ohio. But wait there's much more! It's also a pretty sweet meat market as well. All the USDA meats you would expect but also lots of specialty choices like, Andouille, Slovenian Klobase, Rabbit, pigs feet, Beef Bacon, which I need to try, and they also make there own sausage. So after you've procured your surf and turf there's no need to shop anywhere else because they've got a full blown supermarket of practically everything else you need to complete that meal and any other. It's a one stop shop that's a chef's dream! They have lots of perks for shopping here too, like a rewards card that can let you take 5-15% off your grocery bill, a referral reward program and some other incentives. Bottom line: This is a full service shopping destination that is very impressive with a great selection of virtually everything you need when it comes to seafood, meats and more. Highly recommend!! https://wholey.com/ https://www.facebook.com/wholeysfish/ read more

This purveyor of fine fish is great. Wide selection of fresh fish. I've been to a couple other fish markets in the Strip, but Wholey's is the best! I have been going to Wholeys for years, taking my daughter with me. She was a teenager back then. Now she's in her 40s and we still go to Wholeys together. We have so many memories. Their fish, both hot and frozen, is fantastic. The workers are very kind. I feel like their family and always did. I hope they continue to be here for the Pittsburghers. Nothing but the best at Wholeys. Also they sell fresh fruits and vegetables, pies, eggs, basically most of what you would buy at a grocery store. I am going down there today with my daughter, to eat lunch and buy a case of frozen cod and frozen shrimp. I could live on fish. Their fried calamari is delicious as well. Their fish is safe and reasonably priced for what they do through to get it to their store. read more

I really wish we had a strip district like this one in Columbus, it felt like a different time in a different world. Wholey's is a whole different animal. You got fish, you got meats, you got a plethora of ingredients that can help your holidays be awesome! No one will complain when you have the best food of the season. This place reminds me of the Anderson stores we had in Toledo, Ohio. But a little more bare bones. I like that they had recipe cards all over the store and you could pick up the ingredients and get to cooking. Really neat! The workers were really nice and seemed in good spirits. The bronze pig had surprised me as I left the door, all decked in holiday gear. Love it. read more

Food: Good selection of fried stuff and it's done in the regular fish market style. They have a good sized fish sandwich for $10 in addition to thinks like oyster po boys, though these run higher. Fries were good and had a tasty seasoning. I also enjoyed the clam chowder! Service: I always think the system is kind of whacky, but it works. People have always been friendly to me. Ambiance: It's unique, it's a market but they have an upstairs dining area. In the dining area it's like stepping into the late 1990s, but it works for them. read more

The fish market itself is fantastic stuff. You can get all sorts of fresh whole fish, frozen vacuum sealed fish, lobster tails of various sizes, and even fish scraps like skin, heads, and guts from a self-serve bucket! They also have a full blown market for produce and other land animal meats. The environment of the whole shop feels like stepping back into time, especially with the creepy dolls and singing animatronic cow. I can only imagine the staff hate hearing the cow sing you are my sunshine on a daily basis. The restaurant part is setup like a cafeteria, but its basically like a fast casual ordering setup. It was fascinating to see the workers dunk my crab into a giant container of batter and throw it with little precision into the fryer. The batter splatters all around the fryer for that matter! You can order any fish by itself or in a sandwich. Most people get a sandwich, but with the amount of food I had already had, getting the seafood by itself made sense to me. They have an upstairs area You have to get two soft shell crab, which I didn't necessarily like, but I guess that's their policy. The crab was definitely fresh, as I could taste all its delicious juices and innards. This may be a turn off for some people, but to me this is what I look for when eating crab. Their in house made potato chips are good, but I feel they relied heavily on the old bay salt seasoning for its flavor. These chips are pretty thick, so don't expect lays chips, but certainly not soft like wedges. read more

This was my first time at Wholey's Market I actually went for some roast meat, But ended up buying a bunch of items. Wholey's is in the strip disctrict, But don't let the parking there bother you they have there own free parking. Old school Pittsburgh tradition. The traditional, gritty, grimy store, but in a good way. If you need any seafood at all this is the place. Also has some produce and fresh meats. Inside is Andy's sushi which is great. Yesterday I decided to order some fresh cooked seafood from the takeout counter. First time ever trying it. I opted for the shrimp po'boy and was pleasantly surprised to see them take fresh shrimp, dredge them in flour in front of me and then toss them in the fryer. Doesn't get more fresh than that if you live in a non coastal town. They took a fresh Mancini roll sliced it up and doused it with some remoulade. When I went across the street to eat, I was surprised at how much shrimp was really on the sandwich. The roll was fresh, the shrimp was fresh, it was delicious. read more
