Fun place to eat and get groceries! We walked around and checked out the fish selection and grocery store. They even give you free ice to make your food to go. We then went back in the entrance to order food. The prices are reasonable for the quantity of food you get. I ordered the whaler fish sandwich for my husband and it was huge. The kids enjoyed the homemade chips and the crab and lobster bisque had plenty of chunks of seafood. Just discovered this place on my last trip to Pittsburgh and it's enough to make me want to move there. I didn't try any of the prepared food because it was too early in the morning for a fish sandwich, but the fish counter was inspirational! So much beautiful fish for a good price! Wholey's fish market is a whole Pittsburgh experience that you HAVE to try! This is definitely an infamous spot where you will find a lot of locals. The restaurant is located inside a little fish market where you can purchase fresh seafood! The line was literally outside of the door to get in. Lent is an especially busy time of year for them so be prepared to wait. There is free parking across the street from the main doors. Once you order your food, you wait for them to prepare it for you, pay at the cash register and you can walk upstairs to their cozy little dining area. The fish was delicious! It is hand battered and deep fried. Next time i would like to try their oysters. Their crab cakes do contain bell peppers (if you have an allergy). Fish is fried in corn oil. Sandwiches are served with a side of chips but you can always upgrade to lobster mac and cheese (they have 2 types), french fries, or another side. Only one type of fish comes broiled. I got the lent special halushki (not pictured). It could have used a little more seasoning. Protip: you can always ask for them to make you fresh fish. read more

They have everything seafood. They serve soups, sandwiches, sides, lobster mac & cheese, and chicken. Everything caught from the sea almost. There is one line to get in. The line moves quickly. The workers in there were nice. I picked up a cod sandwich and an oyster po boy. The cod sandwich was stuffed with cod fillets. You have a choice of soft, mancini, or wheat bun. We were too embarassed to ask what the first two breads were. So, we chose the wheat bun for the cod sandwich. It was big and tasty. The oyster po boy was filled with oysters on a French baguette. It was a good sandwich. Since we were visiting, there was no need to check out the market. If I lived in the area, I think I would be here every week. read more

I have been going to Wholeys for years, taking my daughter with me. She was a teenager back then. Now she's in her 40s and we still go to Wholeys together. We have so many memories. Their fish, both hot and frozen, is fantastic. The workers are very kind. I feel like their family and always did. I hope they continue to be here for the Pittsburghers. Nothing but the best at Wholeys. Also they sell fresh fruits and vegetables, pies, eggs, basically most of what you would buy at a grocery store. I am going down there today with my daughter, to eat lunch and buy a case of frozen cod and frozen shrimp. I could live on fish. Their fried calamari is delicious as well. What an amazing place for a quick bite to eat or if you're shopping for your family for a meal at your home. They carry a large variety of meats, vegetables and of course a large selection of fresh fish. The staff was extremely helpful in leading you to the right direction. I really wish we had a strip district like this one in Columbus, it felt like a different time in a different world. Wholey's is a whole different animal. You got fish, you got meats, you got a plethora of ingredients that can help your holidays be awesome! No one will complain when you have the best food of the season. This place reminds me of the Anderson stores we had in Toledo, Ohio. But a little more bare bones. I like that they had recipe cards all over the store and you could pick up the ingredients and get to cooking. Really neat! The workers were really nice and seemed in good spirits. The fish market itself is fantastic stuff. You can get all sorts of fresh whole fish, frozen vacuum sealed fish, lobster tails of various sizes, and even fish scraps like skin, heads, and guts from a self-serve bucket! They also have a full blown market for produce and other land animal meats. The environment of the whole shop feels like stepping back into time, especially with the creepy dolls and singing animatronic cow. I can only imagine the staff hate hearing the cow sing you are my sunshine on a daily basis. The restaurant part is setup like a cafeteria, but its basically like a fast casual ordering setup. It was fascinating to see the workers dunk my crab into a giant container of batter and throw it with little precision into the fryer. The batter splatters all around the fryer for that matter! You can order any fish by itself or in a sandwich. Most people get a sandwich, but with the amount of food I had already had, getting the seafood by itself made sense to me. They have an upstairs area You have to get two soft shell crab, which I didn't necessarily like, but I guess that's their policy. The crab was definitely fresh, as I could taste all its delicious juices and innards. This may be a turn off for some people, but to me this is what I look for when eating crab. Their in house made potato chips are good, but I feel they relied heavily on the old bay salt seasoning for its flavor. These chips are pretty thick, so don't expect lays chips, but certainly not soft like wedges. read more

The prices where good on everything I bought much better than competing other supermarkets. The store has a huge selection of assorted fresh fish and meats as well as a deli and fruits and vegetables. The store is a bit crowded, But laid out well. I was extremely happy with Wholey's. Inside is Andy's sushi which is great. Yesterday I decided to order some fresh cooked seafood from the takeout counter. First time ever trying it. I opted for the shrimp po'boy and was pleasantly surprised to see them take fresh shrimp, dredge them in flour in front of me and then toss them in the fryer. Doesn't get more fresh than that if you live in a non coastal town. They took a fresh Mancini roll sliced it up and doused it with some remoulade. Wow, I was surprised this fish market is also a place to eat good food. I have been there several times. The first time I tried their lobster sandwiches and they are soooo good. You get two for $18 which is a really good price. This weekend, I was there for lunch and the sushi line was out the door so I tried the hot food line. I ordered a small gumbo soup for less than $5 and a fish sandwich for $6 something. The sandwich had 1/2 pound of cod so I only ate half! I had them add some Cajun sauce that comes with the shrimp po boys and it was so good! I had to take my gumbo home because i couldnt finish the sandwitch. It had okra, sausage, and crawfish. I added a whole piece of salmon at home and it was sooo good. They also have an upstairs eating are with condiments. It's not a nice place to eat so I recommend taking it to go.
