I find myself wanting that 1/2 star add-on rating again...This would be a 3 1/2 star review, if so. The good: the market has a good selection of fresh fish (I bought a great fillet of yellow fin tuna a few weeks ago) -- some filleted, others whole, some live fish & lobster. The not good: Entering the restaurant side is not a welcoming experience. We ordered a fish (cod) sandwich and a soft shell crab sandwich. The young woman behind the counter merely pointed at 3 different buns on a plate on the counter as if to tell us: Pick one. (Really- she said nothing). So we did - a "soft bun" (this over a Mancini's egg roll or whole wheat bun). We weren't given any options for sides, so we told her we each wanted Cole slaw. We then figured out - after not seeing the sides on our ticket - that a short ways down the counter is a bin of Cole slaw and potato salad. We grabbed 2 small coleslaws and -- since we weren't told where to go with our ticket --- we ventured toward the cashier. Nope - she turned us back. "You must have all of your order before coming here," she informed us. So - back we went to another woman who appeared to be frying our sandwiches. She hollered out our number, and off we went. Another good: the surprisingly large, mostly clean (some of the paper table coverings were dirty from previous diners - but we easily found a clean table) dining area upstairs. Another not good: the level of salt in the batter on the way-over-cooked soft shell crab was surprising. It was impossible to taste the crab. My husband's cod sandwich was pretty good. The Cole slaw - not bad. Back down in the market, we went to the chicken counter to order some thighs and found the man equally unfriendly. I went to get olives from the olive bar, and the employee there didn't bother to tell me he was still setting up the bar - even though I was clearly puzzled by the lack of serving utensils in the olive bins. Same unfriendly attitude continued to the check out counter. Yowza. I'll return to the market and hope for a better experience next time. I want to like this place! read more

Ask a yinzer where to get a fish sandwich in Pittsburgh and they will probably tell you "Wholey's dahn in the strip". I love their shrimp hoagie. That chipotle remoulade they use is so good. The cod sandwich is so big I usually end up taking some home with me (if I can wrap it in time before my husband tries to devour it). They always give a healthy serving of fries and their lobster Mac is so yummy. I like to grab a little container of cole slaw from their fridge and put it on my fish sandwich. The dining area upstairs is always clean and I love the variety of sauce options. P.S. - if you haven't tried the Vidalia onion and peach hot sauce... you're missing out. They have it upstairs sometimes at the condiment bar and also sell it downstairs. That sauce has become a staple in our house. I dip everything in it! Fish, fries, chicken, roasted veggies. I have shopped at Wholey's regularly for years. Try to plan a trip there for a weekday to avoid the crowds. Especially if you want to get sushi from Andy! When you first walk in, Andy is making his famous sushi at a small counter. The rolls are obviously so fresh since the fish comes from the market. He is so funny and entertaining too. The prices are high, but once you see how huge the rolls are it makes sense. If you go in the "hot foods" line to the left of the entrance, you will see their lobster mac and cheese and fish sandwiches. They have broiled cod that is flaky and delicious, and only takes about 5-10 minutes. I can't eat a really greasy fish sandwich, so I usually get the cod. You can get delicious crab cakes here too. If you walk in the entrance and go to the right, you will see all the fresh (and frozen) seafood. I usually get whatever fish is on special. They have great prices on salmon, swordfish, and orange roughy. Their fresh lump crab cakes are awesome, but pretty expensive. The workers are all so friendly, and let you pick exactly which piece of fish you want through the case. It's fun to look at the big tanks of lobsters in the back. They let you pick which one you want out of the tank too. My parents always get chicken at Wholey's because the price is so cheap. If you get meat in larger quantities, it is even cheaper. They have a full meat/butcher section that is as impressive as the seafood section. Don't pass up the lobster bisque soup to go, or a rotisserie chicken by the checkout. After a trip to the strip location of Mancini's bread, I made the trip next door to Wholey's. I have to admit that it was chaotic. There are 2 doors with a rope seperating the entrances. I did not realize until I got inside that I had entered the wrong door. I was on the retail side. When you're in a wheelchair, it isn't easy to go under or around to get in the right line. I've heard about the fish sandwiches for a while now, and have wanted to try one for myself. I ordered the cod sandwich, which is listed as 1/2 pound. I will admit that watching them prepare my sandwich gave me some confidence. The guy assembling the sandwiches is fast and weighs the fish pretty efficiently. I have no doubt that you get your money's worth, since it feels like if the weight is close, even if it goes a bit over, he puts it together for you immediately. In a place this busy, it seems like it would be inefficient to trim to exact measurements. It becomes better to keep the line moving. Being a first time visitor, it can be easy to get lost in the confusion. Some of the people there just expect you to know the workings of the store. The ambiance is geared more toward speed and efficiency than customer service. Just as an example, I didn't know that there was a dining area upstairs. Not that I could have made it up there in a chair, but nothing I saw indicated there was a dine in option. In fact, I never saw or was offered any condiments for my sandwich. In truth, I planned to take my purchase home, so for me, it wasn't as big a deal. Still, I saw nothing in the way of tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, cheese options or any vegetable choices, such as lettuce, tomato, onion or pickles. I got a plain sandwich on a Mancini's roll. Keep in mind that I had contact with 3 different people on my way through. The first is the one that takes your order and they expect you to know what and how to order. Then you move on to the fryer , where one person tosses battered fish in the hot oil while another assembles your sandwich. The third person is the cashier who demands 2 receipts in order to take your payment. The truth is that if any one of these people slowed down a hair, they'd probably double their sales. They could suggest additional items and tell customers about the upstairs dining area. They could educate customers on where to find condiments. There are a couple of coolers you pass along the way that hold drinks and some other items. You are pushed along by the tight lines, so you may not have long to check things out. I spent a little time wandering around after getting my sandwich and found the retail area well stocked, if a little difficult to manuever. The retail area is actually split into 2 different sides, with 1 side being about 90% seafood and the other set up like a typical grocery store. There is some crossover and I'd have to spend some more time there to discover all of the nooks. I was there on the weekend, so I suspect I could have a better experience during a weekday. If I find that it is easier to mnavigate or that I get any level of better service, I'll be sure to update this review. All in all, the sandwich was good and a good value. Everything else could have easily been made better with a little care. Some training would go a long way. read more

I missed home food when I was traveling so I was so happy to have stumbled to this place. They have all your seafood, meats, veggies and everything else you will need to make a meal. I was craving for some gumbo and jambalaya and they have all the ingredients I needed. They have both fresh and frozen seafood and meats. Ordered fried oysters, crabby patties and a fried cod sandwich. Barely edible because the sodium content was beyond high which made it hard to eat. It's like they fried everything and then dredged them in salt. This is the saltiest meal we've ever had and such a waste of money. I was tempted to bring the oysters to staff and tell them to sample one to tell me what they thought but I didn't want to be obnoxious. We all know Wholey's for their famous fresh seafood and meat. Did you know they also freshly ground peanuts to make the best fresh peanut butter in town? The peanut butter keeps us coming back but each time we try a new feature of Wholey's. This week we tried their hot food line and muffled our way through as obvious newbies. To start, there is a separate line for the not food at the entrance, stay left of the divider outside. When you enter, you are greeted with an overhead menu of fried seafood and sides. The only non seafood ilootions are chicken tenders, fried chicken, and sides. We ordered two cod sandwiches on a regular Mancini's bun (you can pick your bun type but Mancini's is always the move) and a large side of fresh chips. You are given a receipt and number and shuffle down the line to get your food. The fish was friend in front of us! You can also pick up a beverage, coleslaw, or egg salad while in line. They call your number, hand you a new receipt, and you place your original receipt in a bin on the counter. Proceed to the cashier at the end. Post cashier, there are utensils, napkins, and sauces (ketchup, cocktail, hot sauce, and tarter). Pro move - proceed through the fish depart to the steps on your left for a surprisingly upscale dining experience in a fish market. There are more utensils and sauces upstairs and it is less chaotic. The fish sandwiches are massive to the point that we each pulled a piece of fish off to save for another meal. The cod was fresh and thin with the perfect amount of breading. Nothing comes on the sandwich but sometimes you need to let the perfect fish and bun speak for themselves. The large bag of chips was well, quite large, so we brought them home. However to use Wholey's as a grocery store would be foolish because many of their staple items are overpriced and you'd fare better at Aldi. Amazing!! Absolutely adore this place. My boyfriend and I got huge Alaskan crab legs and they were the best and such an amazing deal. This store is way more than a fish market. We got all kinds of groceries for our Crab leg boil! The quality of the fish is excellent. This market gets very busy on the weekends! Large selection of seafood and you can also buy prepared food to eat on the go! There aren't any tables to sit and eat it, so we walked around with it. A little confusing as to how to find the way in to the actual store, but once you are inside e prepared to be surrounded by tons of different types of proteins. Some fresh, some frozen, a lot was reasonably priced. The workers were eager to help you with the best choices for your needs and price range. I spoke with several employees regarding their experiences with the foods they were selling. I got several great recommendations! And a whole fresh chicken for $4.49? A whole chicken! I bought stuff for my home and my mother's, and filled two large brown grocery bags for just under $75. I will be back next month to stock up. Oh my parents had fish sandwiches, lobster Mac and lobster bisque. Delicious! The fries have to be soaked in something illegal, so addictive!! The sushi counter is cash only, and there is an ATM by the door. Andy was so gracious! I had to stand in line three times before I was actually able to order (didn't see cash only sign, had to pay the other meals elsewhere). If you are looking for a spot to grab a HUGE fish sandwich, fries shrimp or delicious crab cake at low price then this is the place but almost everything is fried which is why my review is not a perfect five star review. I came here for lunch with four of my colleagues and we ordered everything from chicken wings to cod sandwich, shrimp, fries, crab cakes and slaw. Keep in mind this is a seafood market with a cafeteria style order station so don't expect waiters and white cloth on the table. They do put white paper sheet on the table if that makes you feel better ;). I wish this place would steam shrimp, crab legs or lobster. I would dine here more often if that was ever an option. This is a big fish market with a place you can order food. You order and watch it being fixed, pay and then either take it to go or there is an eating area upstairs. The only drawback is going up the stairs with your tray. Refills on soda is included but the machine is downstairs. I think the food is very good. They even have sushi being made to order! This place is absolutely amazing! It is a whole market with very reasonably priced groceries. They also have a hot kitchen and a sushi stand (Andy's Sushi). I recommend getting the cod sandwich and pour over some malt vinegar in the thing and take a few chomps. The bread was very fresh from a local bakery. As for the market side of things, I wish I was able to get some groceries to prepare food however I was in a hotel nearby for a few nights. OK, so Wholey's is kind of like a Pittsburgh institution. For good reason. As a landlocked city, Wholey's is your best bet when it comes to getting fresh seafood. I've shopped both the hot prepared foods and the grocery store. The best hot foods I've had are the crabcake sandwich, on a Mancini's bun, naturally, and the lobster mac and cheese. The crabby patty is pretty decent, too. I don't think you can go wrong with anything in the grocery; I've tried a variety of things and have rarely been disappointed. The $2 crabcakes were surprisingly good. The calamari in the frozen section is as good as in a restaurant when cooked in an air fryer. The only thing I was questioning was the pre-made lobster rolls. While getting fresh ones in New England is the way to go, they weren't bad and were tasty in a pinch. So yeah, if you happen to be in the Strip, Wholey's is kind of a landmark among the Penn Avenue storefronts. read more

Fresh seafood and fish, a large meat department including some more exotic meats, some veggies, candy and fudge, Andy's Sushi Bar and the Wholey's Kitchen for a good seafood sandwich or entree. Now this is really a large warehouse so don't expect any style points. Just good fresh seafood. Have shopped at Wholey's for years mostly for seafood but from time to time have stopped in the Kitchen for a meal. Just wander up the stairs after you get your order for a table and they have some hot sauce, tartar sauce and cocktail sauce and a lot of tables that someone puts down fresh white paper after every use. Today I stopped for lunch and decided to get the Sea-bak Shrimp Burger, a new treat for Lent by Rick Sebak that is chopped shrimp with cornmeal, some lemon juice and whatever to keep it together topped with a nice mango chutney that has some habanero pepper on Mancini bread. A nice change from the fried cod or crab that I usually get and tasty. Not sure I would want the Sea-bak weekly but a good change of pace. read more

I used to really like to come here for meat. This time, we tried the fresh chicken. I got 4 boneless chicken thighs. I brought them home and the next day, they smelled. I like some seafood but my husband cannot stand it. We originally thought it was the bag but no. All the pieces smelled like fish. I unfortunately couldn't take the smell either. We ended up cooking it for our dogs. The regular packaged beef, pork, bacon, ect have always been ok. Maybe since the chicken is out in the open? I don't know how this place got the reviews, that they got. First misleading reviews on yelp for me. There was no line and I read from the menu what I wanted. 3 crabby patties, 2 orders of fried clams and 1 order of oysters. Looked at my receipt and it said 3 crab cakes. Now, a line is forming getting busy, girl obviously avoiding me, she sees I want her attention. Told her my order again, didn't know how to void and correct the order. Now, she only charged me for 1 sandwich. Manager must of overheard conversation and stepped in to correct the order. He knew she was incompetent. Finally, order is ready...they forgot my oyster order. Not in bag. Had to get the attention of this other woman and she claimed she didn't see it on the order. Manager overheard conversation again and corrected the mistake. This place is smelly, dirty-looking and a real whole in the wall. The oil needed changing, you could see the foam and smell the fishiness. Not worth paying $92 for this food. One big rip off!!! read more
