This is honestly a really tough review. First, let's start positive: unless it's some really obscure ingredient (or boysenberry jam) I usually find what I need, and the prices are okay - no thanks to the current orange idiot. The people are friendly, but almost to a fault. Here's the thing: we all like friendly service, but not at the cost of efficiency. On the day of this review around 2:30-3:00 the lines were wrapping into the aisles with two checkers and not one single person leaving their stocking or their conversation to lend a hand. Piss poor teamwork and piss poor scheduling from management. However, it's those same staffers who saved this from being a 1-star review because I have never, ever been so close to such crotchety, bitchity, entitled customers. They were chewing out the poor people working the registers like it was a personal attack on their very important lives of being wretched people. Entitled a**holes who have never worked a day of customer service in their lives. While loading my groceries into the Lyft, some 859-year old Cryptkeeper-lookin' azz wanted to yell at us in her 5-pack-a-day sandpaper screech that we were taking too long (2 minutes). I reminded the Lyft driver that she would die well before both of us. If that's what I had to put up with every day, I wouldn't want to work there either. read more

Once again, Giant Eagle does not disappoint when it comes to the poorest of customer service ever. It is astounding that people are spending their hard-earned money at this location, yet the employees who are garnering a paycheck from Giant Eagle literally will not utter a word to you, and not even a "thank you." It's simply criminal to pay out the outrageous prices demanded here for such piss-poor service and employees who clearly don't care. They are literally doing the bare minimum--the bear nothing--and still collecting a paycheck every two weeks. Given this appalling experience, it is not a big surprise that their Net Promoter Score is likely sitting at a dreadful -5. Avoid this location if you value courtesy or basic service. read more

The pharmacy at Giant Eagle gave me the wrong prescription too high of a dosage of Lipitor. I went down again to get the right dosage and returned the one I could not use and they disposed of it. I had to pay for the correct prescription and had already paid for the wrong one. So I paid twice. Since the Head Pharmacist is on vacation, I was not refunded or credited for the wrong medicine. I will no longer use this pharmacy. I would give them a zero. The lady said you signed that it was right. I signed before it was handed to me and I did not know that it was wrong. The computer tells them it is 20 MG as I had them filled before. This pharmacist gave me 40 MG unscored pills, which I could not use. They don't give you the medicine until it is signed. Now I have to wait to see if I can get a refund on the medicine, that the pharmacist did incorrectly. I would not recommend this pharmacy under any circumstances. I will not use them again. Giant Eagle in general is just a terrible place. Insanely overpriced foods that you could get cheaper pretty much anywhere else. Their "organic" brand stuff looks and tastes worse than their other stuff. Pretty sure they just put that title on their stuff to charge you an extra 2 or 3 bucks. Have I seen giant eagle locations that are in much better condition inside and out compared to this store, yes, I have and probably everyone has who has been to any GE location besides this south side one. This is not the best looking or feeling location but it gets the job done. This is the only major grocery with fresh produce that I am aware of which is in the area to serve the community. When I lived in Pittsburgh for 8 yrs. Once, their head of security threatened me in front of my neighborhood shoppers in Greenfield when a customer service worker lied about an incident she created. He gave me a formal apology. In 2020, I a senior citizen fell in front of the same store that had something slippery on the concrete. I reported it and no one contacted me. I'm not a huge fan of this Giant Eagle. It's not because of the selection they have, it's more because of the level of customer service you receive. If I were to evaluate this place based off of just the quality of the products held within, it would be a different story, but because a review covers more than just that, here we have it. The customer service here is some of the worst I have ever had. The employees look bothered to even have you ask them a question. And when you can ask a question they don't bother to acknowledge you. Some times they don't even care if you are standing there to ask them a question, instead they will have a whole conversation with their coworkers. It's like they're trying to live up to their "worst grocery story in America" title. Every time I shop here I find expired food on the shelves and encounter some type of unsettling interaction. I shop here out of convenience, but I will never shop here again after experiencing the manager rudely yell at a line of people -- who had been waiting well before the cashier turned off the light -- for staying in the line (there were only two lines open and those lines were backed up into the aisles). After she yelled, she loudly said to the cashier "I don't know why they're standing there, and I don't care if people have been waiting in line they'll have to go wait in another line." This is not the safest Giant Eagle around and I generally try to avoid going here if I can. I have been harassed multiple time in the parking lot and repeatedly asked for rides or money - once even being threatened and cursed at for no apparent reason. I understand that Giant Eagle is not responsible for what their customers do in the parking lot, generally speaking, but it still impacts how safe I feel going here. Yesterday I came here just to use the bathroom (because the gas station next door didn't have a bathroom) and the person in the stall next to mine appeared to be using drugs while sitting on the floor next to the toilet and there was toilet paper all over the floor, broken dispensers in disrepair and, for some reason, a black light that gave the place a "shady night club vibe" rather than a "bathroom of a local grocery store vibe." Another thing I noticed, as did many of the people there, was this awful pungent smell that appeared to pervade into every corner of the building. I brought this up to the store manager who had no clue what was going on but who thought it may have been a burnt oil smell. In my opinion, it smelled more like seriously expired food - like expired parmesan cheese. It would not surprise me at all if it was related to a serious health code violation and I would strongly urge the health department to look into this grocery store. Also, one of the cashiers looks 12 years old and with only 2-3 cashiers at a time the lines are pretty long. I would prefer to walk to the strip district and get much better deals on everything and be treated significantly better. It is amazing how different the strip district feels than this creepy grocery store despite them being in actual walking distance from one another. Generally I am a fan of Giant Eagle. I certainly am glad there is one close to where we are staying. That being said, there are many "sketchy" people around, probably because of the first bus stop after the underpass going from downtown is at the end of the parking lot. Now we have NOT been harassed. I didn't feel afraid. The store is clean but is smaller and didn't have all the choices I was looking for. This is a chopped down version of some of the bigger Giant Eagles. I would say probably about t=half the size of most of the giant eagle around. They had a descent selection , But not as good as most of the bigger ones. I did get most of the items I needed. The staff where friendly and helpful. I probably would not go back to this Giant Eagle unless I was in the area and knew I only needed a few items. I found this Giant Eagle to be too small and not enough of a selection. read more

I wish I could give this review less stars. This is the worst Giant Eagle in the country. Every person who works here is very rude and unfriendly. That goes for the person working at the only open cash register too. No matter what time you go there, the check out lines are a mile long because no one can do their job. Nothing is clean, their shelves are always empty, and they barely have any product to begin with. I would rather grow a garden of my own crops and start a farm full of animals than to go shopping here. What an embarrassment to Giant Eagle's. This store is absolutely the worst one I've ever walked into. I'm from a very rural area and those are rough. This one though, takes the cake of the worst Giant Eagle ever created. The floors are filthy, the parking lot is always a mess, store is never in good shape and the produce never looks appetizing. Not to mention I don't think I've ever seen an employee actually manning the floor. The employees that are ringing are very rude, never happy, and are SLOW. I'm not sure who is hiring these people? If this wasn't the only store in the area with groceries it would have shut down a week after they opened. I'm not hard to please when it comes to shopping conditions. All I need is a clean environment and a pleasant experience. I'm surprised this company even allows these conditions to exist. I wish the hours were a little longer. But it is what it is. There's always convenient parking. Being able to get my bus pass and other services at the service desk is nice. I have been fighting with customer service for over 3 weeks about getting new cards or a refund because there is a glitch somewhere. Have always been told not to go there for produce ! Things have changed, we understand that corporate has taken over the store and more changes are to come soon. They have a nice selection of organic produce now - Chico in the produce said that more will be coming. He was very helpful showing us around the produce section. Glad we took a chance and walked over from our downtown apartment. We are very happy with the improvements - with more to come. An easy walk from downtown (or a drive or bike ride). OK-- I need to stick up for this store after reading these other reviews. I live nearby and have shopped here multiple times a week for the past year or so. I find this store to be consistently clean and the employees to be helpful, polite, and efficient. Despite being much smaller than most Giant Eagle stores, this one offers a decent selection of international foods, organic products, and vegetarian/vegan items. I regularly buy produce here and see no difference between the quality/freshness of what this store offers and what other Giant Eagle stores sell. The main difference in the produce section is, truly, the lack of dim, directional lighting that new and newly renovated stores use to give their produce that false garden-fresh glow. Harsh overhead lighting doesn't create much of a mood, but at least I can see clearly enough to choose the freshest items. As for all the remarks about this store's clientele...wow. It's amazing how people in the politically-correct 21st century manage to find new ways to express 19th-century bigotry. All the comments about "thugs" and "bums" and "EBT cards"? Why don't you just say what you mean? Better yet, just stay in the homogenous suburbs where you can buy your mood-lit grapes among "your kind." No, this isn't the world's greatest grocery store. Yes, I sometimes fantasize that it will close and a Trader Joe's will move in. But it's not the terrifying, stinking hellhole full of rotten food and sneering employees that these other reviews portray it to be. Awful. I didn't know how bad it was until I went to a different GE and saw how good it could be. The lines are long, the produce selection is minimal, and the store is overcrowded. The store reeks of rotting fish, the security guards watch you like a hawk and the food selection is the worse I've seen in any Giant Eagle in the city. One plus if you must shop here there are plenty of jitney drivers waiting for you to come out to offer you a ride. That can be a big help if you are like me and don't have a car. I've had a lot of bad experiences at this store. The employees have been rude so much that I just expect them to roll there eyes when I get deli meat. Lines are long, and there's always a crowd of people hanging out front begging for money, cigarettes, or trying to sell their food stamps. I have filed a complaint with corporate about this store before and I was contacted by a manager. I do have to say, that this manager really, sincerely cares about this store and customer experience. I talked to him for 20 minutes and he was polite and friendly. His name is Mr. Youngblood, and he urges you to ask for a manager if you're having a bad experience. Produce selection is terrible, there is not a meat counter in store, and it's just feels dirty. This is the only grocery store on the north side, so it's not as easy to "just go somewhere else" sometimes when you get off work, you don't want to drive 10 minutes to go to Kuhns on mcknight. read more

This store has an overall poor selection compared to every (really, every) other Giant Eagle in the area. That's particularly true when it comes to anything that would generally be sold "fresh" like fruits and vegetables, meat, fish or bakery items. But it is important to the neighborhood and it's the only place many nearby residents can shop. While this store is in what some other reviewers consider a "low income area" (which is questionable if you look at the larger area beyond the subsidized housing behind it) that doesn't mean the residents wouldn't like to have better access to fresher fruits and vegetables and some of the other things available at most other Giant Eagles. It's almost offensive that the owners, managers or whoever it is calling the shots think that this store should be run so differently because it's not in the middle of Shadyside or at the Waterworks. Deutschtown, the Mexican War Streets, and nearby Allegheny West are all very nice neighborhoods with strong communities and their residents deserve better. Many residents drive to other Giant Eagles or other grocery stores that are much farther away but would certainly shop at this store if it had an even slightly better selection of fresh items. This is also the closest grocery store to downtown. So if it had a better selection, it might even be able to get people to cross a bridge to shop there. The bottom line is that this store could be so much better and actually serve the neighborhood it's in, regardless of the varying income levels of its patrons, but for some reason it chooses not to do so. All corporate Giant Eagles in the area have been completely overhauled in the last 5-10 years. It would be great if this store would just improve the availability of some healthier, fresher foods, even if it doesn't want to put the money into renovating it like most other area Giant Eagles. read more

This is a small, franchise-owned location that caters to the predominantly low income households in the area. Selection is quite limited throughout the store with limited quantities on the shelf of the items they do carry. Because of the area in which it is located, the store is NOT 24-hours as most Giant Eagle's seem to be. The pharmacy inside the store, unlike the store itself, is corporate owned, and it's staff is friendly and efficient. A stark contrast to the rest of the store. Once again reflecting the relatively low income of the area this store serves, there will be one of more jitney's (unlicensed cabs, effectively) waiting outside the store willing to take you and your groceries home for a small fee. In general, if you CAN shop somewhere else, you will probably want to. read more

It's amazing. In all these years nothing has been done about this neighborhood grocery store with a Bad Attitude. My usual response to this store is to; get through the front door, only to turn and leave. I travel another 4.5 miles to shop elsewhere. I've had 7 register discrepancies in 2021, so far. The latest being over charged by $8.82. It's the only one I collected on due to the fact that I don't want to go in there and possibly ruffle any feathers. I'll drive to Kuhn's....No problem! Most recently I had an exchange to make. The customer service person did the math in her head, and came up with a $2 balance due to the store. I did the simple math and came up with Giant Eagle owing me some change. I called her on her math discrepancy and she got pissy. Said "yea", gave me the $2, then gave me her back. I feel like she was scamming me for 2 bucks and pocketing it. I also feel like this isn't the first time she has used her math skills on customers. She was really smooth about it. Check your register tapes for discrepancies and then watch how your issue is handled. All I ask is that you PAY ATTENTION. THIS STORE IS IN A CHALLENGING NEIGHBORHOOD, HAS A HARD TIME KEEPING EMPLOYEES, HAS A BAD ATTITUDE IF YOU ARE NOT FROM THE "HOOD", AND WILL TRY TO INTIMIDATE YOU. HOLD FAST AND ASK FOR MANAGEMENT.
