Both a neighbor & I stopped in this store earlier today for just 3 items. We first sat in the dining area before shopping. What we encountered was somewhat what to expect by the history of this location. A shoplifter drinking a beer before racing out the side exit. Same face from awhile back just another day forward. Grocery prices will never come down with this kind of nonsense regardless of the political climate on capital hill. Only thing saving this store is the customer service. The employees from the deli to checkout were so helpful and patient. However this was the most horribly organized giant eagle I've ever been to. Empty shelves, things not in the right place, made it extremely hard to locate stuff i was wanting. The only area that was up to par was the bath and beauty section. Very overcrowded with tight spaces to try and maneuver carts through. I was disappointed in the stock and selection of food items. read more

Biggest scam going. Prices skyrocketing and now they have you checking yourself out and bagging your own groceries. They don't have many full service lines so naturally the lines get long which prompts people to use the self service lines. And even in the full service lines there are no baggers. This store does have a tendency to get busy and be difficult just getting in and getting parked. The store itself is huge and definitely has a wide selection of products. We tend to just stop at this one if we are in the area and need a few things. For this review I am mainly focusing on the beer/wine section. They have a great selection available and offer a ton of local options, which I love to see. The beer cooler has a section just for local craft. I on more then one occasion have found some great beers at a great deal in the mix your own six pack selection. I look every time I am there, even if we aren't planning on getting beer. Recently I have been noticing the beers they have on tap. They don't have a bar at this location, just a small number of tables tucked in the back corner. Also apparently they can only ring up one draft at a time, which is odd. However, they have had a phenomenal tap list lately. We have seen beers that are difficult to find in this area, plus local craft options. The prices are always reasonable as well. read more

This is my market. I rely on the Center Avenue store for almost everything I need. The quality of the produce and the meats is consistent and excellent. I appreciate the fact that the store reflects, to some degree, the diversity of our population, as well. I appreciate the underground parking for when the weather is miserable. It's an inheritance from the old Food Gallery that was first in here. One of the things I truly appreciate about this Giant Eagle is that it is tended to by people who have been here for decades! I was in the area and decided to shop at the Giant Eagle Market District instead of going to Whole Foods. What a mistake that was. I find the prices are higher at Giant Eagle than any other supermarket. I also did not think they had the greatest selection. I found the parking to be be terrible and I literally waited about 10 minutes for a spot?????? The one thing I do like is when you shop at the Giant Eagle you can use the scanner which makes shopping much faster. I like the regular Giant eagle much better than the Market district. I also find the prices are better at the regular Giant Eagle. I do not think I would ever go back again unless I had to. read more

I'm highly disappointed in a few things. The vegetables weren't looking fresh, there wasn't any potatoes that looked decent and weren't $8. They ran out of all the giant eagle brand tissue. The other problem was the fact that we used the Upmc purple Mastercard and it didn't allow all items to be approved so I cancelled the entire transaction so that I could just go to a different location. I called the store spoke to the manager Micheal and he gave me a hard time. I had to question his management ability after I gave him the amount and the time with which register I was at by the bank. He was not very nice and I asked him if I needed to come up there to handle this face to face, he then told me he found the transaction and I asked when will it be credited back on the card and he said days (not specific) and from there I said goodbye. There's no reason I should have to tell a manager how to do their job. I didn't appreciate the way I was treated at all. read more

I shop here weekly for groceries but never really got a cake from the bakery until recently. I called the bakery to ask if they did rose piping and they said yes. When I got there the woman at the counter asked to take a picture of what I wanted and said that it was doable. The cake turned out exactly how I expected. Does the trick. A bit pricey but selection is pretty solid. For general shopping, I usually go to Aldi for better prices right up the street. Market District has better speciality selection and I really enjoy their pre-made meals to buy in house. The wine and beer section has an okay selection to get what you need ahead of your event for the evening. I think prices here could be more competitive. This supermarket is nicer and definitely on an upper scale as compared to other typical Giant Eagles. The store is expansive and has great selection of a typical western supermarket, and a huge range of selection of any given product (organic, flavors, etc). Although not to the extent that Costco does at pretty much end of every aisles, this supermarket also serves some sample food just like how Costco does it, too. The only drawback to this (to me at the very least) is the layout of the supermarket. Maybe I wasn't as used to it but it was sort of difficult for me to navigate around to find an item that I wanted. The fresh ingredient items are all sort of sprinkled over different areas, and the aisles are pretty narrow that sometimes it's hard gong around with the supermarket carts and having to dodge other people using the supermarket carts, too. Overall though, great selection of food (maybe not so much on Asian food), but if you are looking for a typical western ingredients, you'd probably find quite a number of options to pick! read more

Oh, Shadyside Market District, why can't I quit you? Let me see, perhaps because I lack a car and you're the most conveniently located grocery store, a mere 2 mi. from my apartment and on the route of the 71A & C? No, let's be honest here: the real reason is because I'm too cheap to shop at the "whole paycheck," Trader Joe's is too inconvenient, and the product selection at Aldi is limited. On the positive side, this store is larger and fancier than the grocery store I grew up with, and the cheese and bulk foods sections are impressive (the latter includes a make-your-own trail mix bar!). They also have a lot of prepared foods, and though I don't often buy them, the quality of those I've tried has been high (esp. the fried chicken!). This store has a wide selection of groceries, ranging from the inexpensive (Valu Time) to the pricey (organic and natural foods), so, like Barnum's circus, there's something here for everyone. On the weekends, store employees often hand out food samples, and there are sometimes cooking demos at the test kitchen near the seafood section. On the negative side, the employees working the checkout lines are often taciturn or surly, and the crowds in here on the weekends are a force to be reckoned with. The aisles are narrow to the point of awkwardness when passing other shoppers. Product placement is unintuitive to the point that I often have to ask employees for assistance when locating an item I don't usually buy. Also, as others have mentioned, the produce--particularly the loose green vegetables--is often of questionable quality. Compared to Trader Joe's and Aldi et al., the prices are on the higher side, though they still look like a deal next to Whole Foods. Thankfully, because I don't have a car, I don't have to deal with the parking situation, which I'm reminded of when I come here in a car with a friend on occasion. However, I do have to schlep my groceries across the street and onto the bus, which is equally annoying. While I wouldn't call shopping here a pleasure, it's preferable to the alternatives, so they have my regular business--for now. 3.5 stars. read more

People are correct that this place has a larger selection of products, but forget your conventional set up for a grocery store. You would think with this being a Market District. It would be an easy endeavor. This location is a place that I would visit for only one thing, definitely not a place I would regularly stop at, unless I lived within walking distance. read more

The pharmacy here is ridiculous. I'll receive texts that my prescriptions are being filled but hours later when I arrive to this location, the pharmacists let me know that my script is unavailable (it's at the warehouse) and will be ready for pickup the next day. This has happened a number of times. Today I mentioned that my script was important and that I needed it asap, asking for a time of arrival for the next day - then they go ahead and let me know that they will fill it within 20 minutes. What a pile of shit. I literally hate this pharmacy experience. Why would you turn someone away when you have a prescription available to them at the time of their arrival? Or let them know via text when their script will be available - because you seem to want to text customers incessantly. Unfortunately CVS is no longer in network with UPMC insurance. This location is a Market District, so it's going to have nearly everything you could imagine. That's obviously a big plus! Unfortunately, it feels like Giant Eagle tried to cram the newer Robinson Market District's inventory into this much smaller store. It's jam-packed with product...which effectively means that it's also jam-packed with people. Pulling into the parking lot can be a pain, and parking itself can be a chore in their tight lot. Once inside, dodging the masses of confused, aimless shoppers feels like you're in an episode of The Walking Dead and no one has detected you yet...because you're acting just like them. It's a disorganized mess of a store, which leaves people zig-zagging, backtracking, and simply getting in each other's way. If you go late at night...and I'm talking an hour before closing...it's a great experience. Otherwise, it's simply too crowded and unorganized to enjoy. I only go during peak hours if it's absolutely necessary, and even then, I still would recommend the Strip District over the Market District. If you're going to deal with insane crowds of aimless wanderers, you might as well save some money and support the smaller shops. read more

First, Giant Eagle is convenient. It open early and closes late on a daily basis. I have yet to find another store that sells the same variation of food in a unitary complex. And despite its size, the supermarket is clean, and the employees are knowledgeable on the status and location of most items. Second, the prices for non-produce items are competitive if not better than nearby competing stores. The produce items tend to be more expensive, but, to be fair, nearly all if it is fresh. Third, Giant Eagle offers a brand guarantee and a return policy which assure customer satisfaction; that is, you can return items you are dissatisfied with. Obviously, this is a technical component that is rarely considered when food shopping or dining; however, it is nice to know that the company has a firm faith in the products it sells. read more

As far as grocery stores goes, this one is near the top. They are big enough to have just about everything you need (grocery wise) and yet not overwhelmingly large. Granted, their selection of household goods/hardware etc. is on the lower side, at times necessitating trips to target/home depot/walmart. This market district has an excellent selection of prepared foods, produce, international foods, and the regular aisles aren't bad either. When I first moved to the area they did not sell beer, but now do. They maintain an excellent selection of beer and Randy if very knowledgeable and up do date on craft beer. Parking can be a bit slow as there is limited outdoor parking in front and on the side and the remainder of parking is in the garage under the store and requires an elevator ride. It does get crowded at peak times as well. read more
