It was a complete zoo walking in the Strip District on a Saturday given its status as Pittsburgh's tourist hub. It reminded this San Franciscan so much of Fisherman's Wharf and the teeming masses that course through packed sidewalks. Looking for lunch turned out to be a huge undertaking because queues were endless. Except here. It made me wonder if I wasn't aware of some known deficiency in their seafood. It's a two-part business, a fresh fish market on one side and a dining room and sushi bar on the other. The menu was initially overwhelming because food items were meticulously listed on several chalkboards arranged around the order space. There were lots of sushi options, but I wasn't in the mood and went for the $12 Fish Tacos, two of them with a combination of tuna, salmon, and swordfish encased in soft corn tortillas with tomato and cabbage (Photo 8). Fish was very fresh, but very small fish to rice ratio/portion. I was disappointed by the roll I ordered, the pretty girl roll. It tasted like I simply having a rice ball and there's no seaweed. I think your experience here heavily depends on what roll you order. My friends crazy tuna roll was delicious, very fresh, crunchy, and flavorful. My experience here felt like the chefs are afraid of giving you very much fish...and are hoping you won't notice... Also, if for any reason you're considering it, please skip the pizza. My review is based solely on the oysters. I tried the happy hour oysters (Wednesday to Saturday, 3-5 PM) for $1 each, which is definitely a great deal. Service was great, as they shucked our dozen oysters quickly, but I was a bit disappointed with the quality. There was little to no oyster liquor, and all the oysters weren't shucked properly, meaning they were still attached to the adductor muscle, which made them hard to slurp off the shell. Many also had broken shell pieces that I ended up having to spit out. I'd be interested in trying their other sushi/fish menu items next time. This worked well enough, but being newbies we had to watch a little to get the process. I had a basic cod fish sandwich that was served with chips and cole slaw. The sandwich was good, and the fish was very fresh. The rest was a bit basic and boring. My wife had two crabmeat tacos, and she made basically the same comments. So apparently they choose who is worthy of table service? A friend raved about their soups, specifically a watermelon gazpacho so I asked what today's soups were. The girl at the counter rudely said "I don't know, you can just look for yourself right over there." Which, again, could have been said kindly. Once seated, I saw her bring water to all the other tables when they sat. I asked if I could have water and she said "there is bottled water in the cooler". I said could I just get the cup of water like the others and she said "ugh I guess so." I ordered a poke bowl and served myself to a gazpacho. The poke bowl arrived quickly and was a nice size. I just wish there was more rice and fish (it was mostly lettuce). That being said the fish tasted fresh and the sauce that they use is full of flavor. If it wasn't for the rudeness of the staff (towards me but seemingly no one else) I would have given it four stars. We decided to check out the fish company too, best decision ever!! The service was so friendly the woman at the front (forgot to grab her name) was incredible! We ordered some sushi and drinks and ate in the table area which was juxtaposed to the sales floor of the seafood market. It's a cool concept and everything looked fresh. You order from the counter but the food is delivered to the table of your choosing. They had a lot of options on the menu including soups. I could see myself having lunch a few times a week there. They also seemed pet friendly. My only issue was that the tables didn't seem to get cleared, cleaned and sanitized quickly enough. I'm not sure if that was a staffing issue or an operational issue.
