The ice cream is amazing, just like at any other Cold Stone Creamery location. By far my favorite was the Halloween-themed one where they made the cake batter gray. Fun fact, after consuming the gray cake batter, your *coughs* waste turns a cyan color afterward. Service was fantastic, and we enjoyed watching the staff make our orders right in front of us. Love Coldstone! I have never had ice cream that could match their creamy texture. It is basically gelato in all but name. They have three sizes, but the small one (like it) is always fine for me. I am a huge fan of everything vanilla based and they have a bunch of different vanilla-esque varieties such as: cake batter, cheesecake, and sweet cream. You can order something from their menu with their choice of add-ins, or you can pick your own. They have almost every (logical) add-in you can think of. This time I got the cake batter with tiny chocolate chips mixed in, ploppled inside one of their waffle cone cups. Waffle cone cups may be my favorite invention as I get to experience my favorite cone but it isn't messy and stressful and I can take my time eating it with a spoon while crunching the waffle as I go. The employees are usually very nice. The one who took my order asked if I wanted the chocolate shavings instead of the chips because the shavings melt and make it really chocolatey. It was a good suggestion. I did deny it though as I am picky and wanted the crunch but maybe I will branch out next time :). read more

We came on a Friday night, and it was a bit busy. The staff member we dealt with was very friendly, and was great. She handled our large family with kids very well, as well as being kind whenever anyone wanted to sample anything. The only issue we found was with the facility itself. This is one of few Cold Stones in the Pittsburgh area, and the closest one I know to me. After a nice dinner across the street, we decided to stop here for dessert. I ended up here with my friend for dessert after visiting Pizza Cono across the street on Mon. for dinner. Generally, I try to patronize the indy ice cream shops around PGH, but we came here out of convenience, since my friend doesn't care for froyo and we were leaning more towards ice cream than water ice. I hadn't been to a Cold Stone for at least 5 years, so I'd almost forgotten what their ice cream is like. I ordered the small ("like it") size of the mint mint chocolate chip, since I love mint chocolate chip ice cream and brownies (note: I looked up this item later and it packs 580 calories--ouch!), and it seemed like a better deal to pay a bit more to get multiple mix-ins than to just get the standard one mix-in. Although this ice cream was quite a bit more expensive than I'm accustomed to for a bowl of ice cream ($5.25 w/ tax), the employee serving me was generous with the ice cream and mix-ins (my bowl was almost overflowing), and he even gave me a couple of coupons (thanks!). I found the ice cream concoction itself quite delicious, esp. with the bits of brownies, chocolate chips, and chocolate syrup. Was the ice cream as good as Dave and Andy's? No. Could I make this concoction myself at home? Sure. Having said that, I was quite satisfied with the service and product that I received, and the location was convenient for hanging out with my friend for an after-dinner treat. My biggest criticism concerns the price, which is on the steep side (almost $5 for their signature creations in the small size). However, I've seen (and used) vouchers from Groupon and LivingSocial, and I believe they also provide a student discount if you attend Pitt, CMU, or Allderdice HS. 3.5 stars. I got a love it Cookie Minster, it's mint ice cream with oreos and fudge. It was awesome! I got it because i don't like chocolate chips in ice cream. Initially the guy who made it added chocolate chips and then when we started looking confused he asked his coworker and then took them out. My friends and I have a tradition where we gather as a group to celebrate each other's birthdays. The birthday girl gets to pick where we have dinner and then dessert. The birthday girl chose Cold Stone. When we went in there was a line but it was so nice out people were taking their ice cream outside to eat. A bridal party came in right after is so the line was really long. I was super impressed with how quickly the line was going. The employees were all very kind and were helpful if you couldn't make up your mind. They have a lot of choices. Like everyone else our group took our ice cream outside to eat. We all dove into our ice cream. It was all we could do not to lick the cups once the ice cream was gone. Every person liked what they had. It was a great dessert choice. read more

Everyone in my immediate family gets a large cold stone cake for their birthday-- Which means I am guaranteed five delicious ice cream cakes a year. The ice cream cakes are CONSISTENTLY good. Very little else is. This specific location has the food service flaw of extremely high turnover. I've never seen the same person working here more than twice. I blame the turnover, not the individual employees in the slapdash, distracted, and jaded service. I buy the larger sizes (Our's 32oz and Everybody's 48oz) so it is easy to tell when I get adequate service and when I below-standard service. Last night I got an Everybody's size of Mint Mint Chocolate Chocolate Chip (I asked for Our's, but whatever). The employee who prepared it, had the recipe correct, despite hearing the size incorrectly. Seeing her meet the bare minimum standards of the signature creation-making, I should have waited and let her create the next item in my order. Instead, I let her co-worker put together an Our's size of cheesecake ice cream and strawberries as the add-in. This man put one spoonful of strawberries in 32oz of cheesecake ice cream, smashed it 3 times, and tossed it in a container. I was so sick. I paid $26 for ice cream when I could have had better quality ice cream at the Rite Aid across the street for half that price. If you aren't getting something from the self-service freezer-- skip this location. There are several dessert spots on the same block, so why end your night in dissatisfaction by coming here? read more

Coldstone experience not what it used to be. Plus tried to overcharge me for 2 kids' cones. Brought my 2 kids in for a treat on the way to the park. It was not busy. There were high school students already out of school for the day and walking around outside and none of them were in this store. I haven't been to Coldstone in a while, but it used to be an experience with an impressive product. The mix-ins used to be done within view of the customers, etc. (Not at this store). The mix-ins used to be well distributed and generous in the ice cream (not in this store - I had to hunt for the heath bar bits that were corralled somewhere in the middle and barely present). A regular single scoop in a cup is nearly $6 before any mix-ins, which are oddly priced at $1.09 per mix-in. I didn't want to spend $7 per kid on too much ice cream, and stared at the menu for quite a while trying to figure out if there was a kid-sized serving. Nothing like that was listed on the prominently posted menu. Then, I was happy to spot a cardboard display in top of the counter, that showed a kid cone for $3.99 and specified one scoop with one mix-in on a cone for $3.99. My kids each ordered the same exact thing, plus I got a regular scoop in a cup for myself. They hand me cups with the ice cream and a cone inverted on the top. Not exactly what I asked for, but ok. The total comes up and it seems high, so I'm looking at the screen that shows the itemization. It shows our orders, but that we were also charged 75 cents per cone for 2 cones, on top of the regular charges. I asked him why he was charging me for 2 cones for the kids and he said that I asked for cones. I said that the kids cones COME with cones. I go get the cardboard display and point to what the words say and he still seems confused! But then he says, ok I'll remove the cone charges for you (like he's making an exception for me or something.) What the heck? So check what you're being charged for if you really want to come here in the first place. Frankly, there are so many other ice cream places that aren't too far away that are better. If I could give this place zero stars I would! We ordered a prepaided (no other option) cake from them through their online store to be picked up at 1:30 on 4/3/16. When we arrived at the location, the store was closed and the lights were off. We waited around for maybe 30 minutes to see if anyone would show up. We ended up leaving to run other errands and called the other location on Freeport Rd. They told us they had remade cakes and they put one aside for us. Around 3:00, before leaving for the Freeport Rd location, we decided to call Squirrel Hill one last time. Surprisingly, someone answered and told us our cake was there and ready to be picked up. When we picked up the cake, it looked like all the sprinkles on the sides had melted off, it was lopsided and the decorating was horribly done, i.e. the piping was inconsistent and the writing was sloppy. For a $28.99 cake, I would have expected something more. We asked for a refund but the manager refused and offered us free ice-cream cones and 10% off our next cake purchase. Here are the issues: These two ice creams in the smallest size totaled $12.50!!! Thank goodness for Groupon. Additionally, the service at this Cold Stone is bad. I mean, some of the worst service I have ever had. My "waffle bowl" was mostly missing. They put waffle around the outside of the cup, and that was it. My dad's waffle bowl was burned in places. At 10:00 on a Tuesday night, there were a plethora of other waffle bowls. Not impressed. So if you want yummy ice cream and don't mind babysitting the employees, it's ok. read more

Crikey, I must be the odd one out, because I had a rather scrumptious experience here the other night, as did my girlfriend Kay. I recall that there used to be one in Brentwood, but it has long since closed. I dunno gang, I liked what I had, that being Chocolate Devotion, one of the "Signature Creations" they offer. There are so many choices, I couldn't decide, the very same thing happening when I visited the one in Brentwood years ago. Chocolate Devotion has brownie pieces, fudge, and chocolate chips mixed into a silky smooth chocolate ice cream on a frosted slab of granite via a pair of wet paddles. Mine came adorned with excellent whipped cream from a pastry bag in their biggest waffle bowl (they call it 'Gotta Have It' instead of 'large') encrusted with Oreo cookie crumbles that softened like cereal as got to the bottom. Yes, I went a little crazy, and yes I ate it all, waffle bowl included. Hey, I almost added marshmallows. It felt dirty, and I loved it. Catholic guilt overcame me as we walked around, and I discovered that there are a bunch of ice cream places in Squirrel Hill doing battle, some of them chains, some of them independent. I saw a woman walking by our window with a cup of ice cream in her hand and squinted at the logo. Here I had totally forgotten about Razzy Fresh! We coulda, shoulda went there. Oy vey. Cold Stone Creamery was the first ice cream place in sight as we left Silk Elephant, but I honestly don't regret going there. My father-in-law LOVES this place and so we go when he visits. My 4 year old wanted to go and deserved a treat and so we went even though the FIL wasn't in town. He ordered mint ice cream with chocolate chips a.k.a. mint chocolate chip on a cone. Instead of the fancy dance they usually do, the server scooped the ice cream into the cone and them used a spoon to cover it in chocolate chips. My son was thrilled and even said "it was better than I thought." Whatever that means. But I thought it was gross and annoying since the chips kept dripping all over me. When we went to pay we handing the guy the card and our payment, he checked us out and handed back our payment. We had to ask him to punch our card and ask for it back. He only punched it once and I said we got two things, I think each should get a punch, He replied 'no I can only punch it once'. No further explanation, just a stared at us like we were idiots. I didn't argue because I thought maybe I was wrong We ate. I looked at the card and it said 'one punch per each menu item' So when I went back up to get a lid (which took forever), I pointed that out to the manager and he rudely replied with 'We can't do that anymore more. My husband Rick wanted ice cream last night after dinner. So we took a walk over here. I've avoided this place. See, to me there's something about places whose names end in "...ery". "...ery"= $$$! Honestly, what can you get here that you can't get at Baskin Robbins or, even better, Bruster's for a whole lot less $$$? Or as Ryan P suggests, try "Oh Yeah!" in Shadyside (but I haven't been there in awhile). The other thing I hate about places like Cold Stone Creamery is that the portions have gotten insanely huge. I have type-1 diabetes, and while I can eat ice cream (and modify my insulin and carb intake), the sizes here are just carb bombs! I only go to places like this if I can share with someone. I picked up a birthday cake at this store today. First, I was called and told my original cake wasn't made and I said fine, a substitute wasn't a problem. When I got to the store I noticed that not one of the employees was wearing their masks correctly. All of the employees had their noses fully exposed and one had her mouth exposed. The girl who waited on me had a pair of latex gloves on. I watched her handle several items on the back counter, go into a back room and get the cake, proceed to a different room to get the paper work. When she gave back, she took the lid off the cake and proceed to drag her finger around the base of the cake....SHE HAD NOT CHANGED HER GLOVES!!!! I Asked her to please stop and she pushed the cake in front of me and said "do it your self". In addition, the area behind the counter was FILTHY! The waffle iron looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days. This store was absolutely filthy and the staff was clearly never taught how to properly wear a mask and to change gloves after touching other item. They should clearly know better when handling food!!! The Health Department should make a stop at this place, it would never pass a inspection. Who ever is managing this store should be fired.... One of the girls that was there ( Friday around 4:30). Was friendly and very helpful as I observed her helping another customer. She was African American with long hair. She should be thanked, but does need to learn how to properly wear a face mask. read more

HOURS ARE MISLEADING! I love Cold Stone and always have. I wanted to get a sundae on a Sunday, so I went online to check their hours, and it said Sunday 11am - 10pm, so I immediately hopped in my car and went over. I arrived at 9:46pm and the door was locked. There was one worker inside serving ONE customer and another wiping off the 3-4 tables inside. The worker wiping off the tables came over, unlocked the door, and said "Sorry, but since we have to wipe off tables, our manager has us close 15 minutes early." I have been to other Cold Stones MANY times, but have never encountered this policy. Also, it takes one worker less than 15 minutes to wipe down 3-4 tables, so even if that one needs to stay dedicated to cleaning, there's still one other guy who is ALREADY SERVING ICE CREAM.
