Cold Front is a cute spot for a sweet treat. They have all the flavors oh would want from an ice cream place and a few more unique ones. I loved how you could get a "flight" of mini ice cream cones (4 flavors in 4 mini cones). Perfect for an indecisive kid (or grownup). I got the lemon cream and the peanut butter ice cream. Both were good but not my favorite ice cream ever. The lemon was definitely unexpected though (in a good way). They have minimal seating on the inside and a couple tables outside. read more

Unassuming storefront - walk in and you can see what the buzz is about! Brilliant name for an ice cream shoppe that doubles as a fantastic full-service coffee shop, too. Was in the area, always looking for new locally owned joints to patronize and found ourselves here. Grabbed an iced miel and had a great chat with owner, Kyle. The shop uses locally roasted coffee from Bootstrap roasters - based in St. Paul. Parking is all street but wasn't too difficult to grab a spot right out front, making it even more convenient. The place is pretty tiny, so I would avoid it during busy hours. The ice cream was good but nothing original. There was only a small selection of flavors to choose from. The whipped cream on my boyfriend's sundae was super runny when he got it, which was kind of gross. The girl working wasn't very friendly, even though there were no other customers in the place. And that's all I needed to tell my family to convince them to roll out of Casper's and Runyon's Nook and continue to stuff ourselves with the best foods the Upper Midwest has to offer. While Chocolate Shoppe in Madison has dozens of flavors, including more caffeinated flavors, non-dairy, and other specialty ice creams, Cold Front has some of the best of the best. I was in heaven scarfing down my Fat Elvis, while my family members enjoyed Zanzibar Chocolate and This $&@! Just Got Serious (a name which I hate, as if my opinion on that issue matters). The shop is super cute, and while we were happy just having scoops of ice cream, if I lived closed by I'd make good use of their sodas and coffee bar. So why just 4-stars? Customer service left much to be desired. Sure, we were a bunch of weirdos coming in and ooh-ing and aah-ing over buckets of ice cream, but humor us here! One staff member dutifully, though with not much expression, doled out our ice cream while another person continued cleaning and stocking, which is fine--it's just they didn't seem to care that we were sooo happy to get our ice cream here. Hopefully it was an off-day, and even if it wasn't, if we lived closed by we'd be regulars. I recently moved to the neighborhood and have become a huge fan of Cold Front! The ice cream selection is limited compared to other places, but the flavors are super high quality and delicious. Their brewed coffee is flavorful without being too strong. The hot chocolates are amazing. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The owner is often around and you can tell this is very much a labor of love for him - he is often inventing new drinks and sundaes. I am so glad to have Cold Front in my neighborhood! read more

This ice cream shop cannot be more conveniently placed! It's right next door to the Nook which by the way is also worth visiting. The soda and ice cream flights are pretty awesome. It's not just for kids! Or maybe because I had one and I'm no kid. The ice cream flavors are off the chain. My favorite one is the lemon one. It was so incredibly yummy. Cold Front was just your regular ice cream spot. With your basics but a few fun flavors nothing too crazy though. I just got 1 scoop with the mint chocolate ice cream. They give you a lot for 1 scoop I could not finish it all. However, the flavor was nothing special. Pretty average at best. But, if you are in the area I think it's a nice ice cream spot if you don't want to just go to dairy queen. The prices were similar to other specialty ice cream shops not too cheap but not crazy expensive. read more

They have premium ice cream from the chocolate shoppe and it's delish. I always ask because I don't like going out for ice cream & then getting something I can buy at the grocery store. This review is dedicated to the extraordinary service that we got from Hunter. My friend and I came in last night around early 8pm. He was so nice to let us take our time with our ice cream and soda fight selections. He always had a smile on his face. It was really fun trying out different flavors in sample sizes. A super cute date spot for sure. Later that night, when it's almost 9pm, we asked him what time is the store closing. He said that he was supposed to close at 8pm but he didn't want to cut us off. It was so nice because it didn't complain or have an attitude about staying later than his shift. I wanted to try several flavors and she gave me samples of all 4 I wanted, plus my kiddo's. And she let me mix two flavors in my small that I ordered, because I couldn't decide. So nice. Gotta love anywhere that you can get a "flight of ice cream." Which is like the third to best kind of flight you can get... best if you are thinking non-alcoholic. The place is straight out of an old movie with the drug-storish feel and bar area. I've never walked into the place with a worker that was in a bad mood, they always seem pretty chillaxed and knowledgable and ready to help you. Living in Saint Paul, its nice to see retro places like this. Mainly one of the reasons I moved across the river for St Paul's character. Taking a walk around the neighborhood isn't too bad either. I work near Cold Front and I'll call ahead and ask for a coffee and they'll have it ready within minutes (always depends on how busy they are atm-but everyone should know that) I was going there a lot when I could afford it and they ended up giving me a stamp card for a free coffee eventually (after so many bought). Really fun place!! Store is pretty small and if it's busy seating can be a headache. But the ice cream is so worth it!!! My son loved the 'flight' so cute and a great idea!!! I adore zanzibar chocolate; it is the best chocolate ice cream I've ever had. What could be better than a coffee bar and ice cream shop? Not much! Awesome, convenient location next to the Nook...dangerously delicious combination. Staff is friendly and full of awesomeness. Plastic spoons are wimpy. I'm not a huge ice cream person so the fact that they offer a flight of their ice cream and sodas is perfect for someone like me! It's a great chance to try many different flavors in one sitting! I got the fat Elvis, butter pecan, kitty kitty bang bang (my favorite), and door county cherry. I washed it all down with the blood orange and beetroot soda which was crisp and refreshing. Such great customer service. Just willing and happy to accommodate the customer. We tried a few samples of the 8 -10 or so flavors of ice cream. They were all good and actually I'm happy they didn't have too many more because I never feel I make the right choice in that case. As is, I was torn between the various hot chocolates they offered or getting some ice cream. We came up with a variation of the affagato - the white hot chocolate with the black cherry ice cream. Oh my, each by itself was delicious and together it was just a delicious dessert. My daughter had a scoop of a different flavor - hearty serving for a, "scoop". So good we got a pint of another flavor to go. Again, employees were so nice that the entire experience was better for that. I'd go back and I don't live in the area :) read more
