Super Bowl Sunday with family was a delight to have Code1BBQ and while I gave 4 out of 5 stars...I'll explain why later. First...service was excellent. I'm very happy with Erica's expertise and willingness to make sure everything was ready for pickup at my scheduled time. 1 star right there. Next...the food was fresh. I was afraid maybe when I decided on certain meats with a takeout order vs. Eating in house it wasn't going to be fresh. It was excellent. 1 star more. Next...the brisket and pulled pork was incredible. I had every person say how delicious, lean and tasty it was. Even the ribs were unbelievable. I would put them up next to Rusty Can....and everyone knows that place for BBQ. 1 star more. The sauces were really good. The Alabama Sauce was great...the Gold dressing was tasty sweet....and their Texas BBQ was by far the best one. I applaud whoever came up with that because that's what makes the meats even more flavorful. Final star added. Sadly...I had everyone say the Mac and cheese was bland. I had to add salt to have it taste alittle better but I understand...its a side dish and maybe it wasn't made to order. The French fries were not good. It was like mashed potatoes and they just completely disassembled into a soggy mess. They also provided cornbread...I was really looking forward to that being somewhat good but unfortunately...it was terrible. So...Am I saying Code1BBq isn't good? NO. It was overall excellent food! I was in the area with time to kill and barbecue sounded like a good idea. Drove on over to Code one and I was very excited about the possibilities. Took a couple minutes to sit down but four different people had told me someone will be right with me and they were very nice so I was good. Wasn't really in a rush the person that sat me down, I think the owner, was very nice told me they were pretty busy and someone would be with me in a couple of minutes again I'm glad he told me so I didn't feel like I was abandoned took a little longer than I thought but not too bad. Waitress finally came. I gave her my drink order and my food order and then I waited. The Celtics game was on so my time was occupied. Barbecue places are usually really quick cause the food is ready. I ordered to meet two side combo, brisket pork belly, mac & cheese beans and rice. The mac & cheese was amazing. creamy cheesy good flavor. The beans and rice were pretty good too, moist rice good flavor. The brisket was good wish it was juicier and had more flavor. The pork belly was awful overcooked dry flavorless. All I could taste was burnt and then the cornbread was also very good. I don't know if this place is brand new and they're still figuring things out, but the weight seemed longer than it should be in the food wasn't all as good as it should be the workers the owner were amazing. I saw a clip on Social Media last week, I was in the area so I stopped in and grabbed some take out, [[HIGHLIGHT]]as soon as you walk in you smell the smoke, not aggressive though kinda smooth like a fireplace smoke.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got the two meats with two sides, Smoked Brisket and Pork Belly, Rice n Beans and Mac n Cheese. The Brisket was FANTASTIC, great smoke ring and flavor, the bend and pull was exactly what you'd want, The bacon was a good complement with good chew and taste. The Mac n Cheese was delicious much better than I expected, Smokey taste but there was something else that made me want more, the rice was good, but the Mac n Cheese was just that good!! I went to code 1 bbq for the first time Monday and was super pleasantly surprised. Everything was absolutely delicious. The Carolina bbq sauce was delicious. My friend had a pulled chicken grilled cheese that she loved, I had Mac n cheese bowl with brisket. The meat was so tender, perfectly seasoned and so delicious. The Mac n cheese was smooth and yummy. The coleslaw was creamy, crunchy and delicious. I haven't found any bbq in MA that I've enjoyed and my southern friend hadn't either, and we thoroughly enjoyed code 1. Everyone working was super friendly and checked on us to make sure everything was satisfactory. They were so friendly. I finally made it to Code 1 BBQ in Wilmington. Full disclosure: I'm a certified KCBS BBQ judge. That doesn't mean that I'm more qualified to comment on restaurant bbq, nor am I bragging (maybe a little). It just means that my interpretation of what is good bbq may be quite different than yours. Let's get to it, and I'm not using the official scoring system and I'm not basing my review off of competition rules & guidelines. What did I get? 2 meats, s sides platter with cornbread. I opted for brisket, ribs, beans, Brussels sprouts and the trio of sauces on the side. I opted for takeaway, but they have a few tables in their current space. First the sauces, where I am admittedly very fussy (I also make my own). First up was the mustard sauce, which is admittedly never my favorite. This one was just ok for me, not that different from your standard yellow mustard. GRADE: C+. The Alabama white was nice, though I prefer mine more vinegary & less sweet. GRADE: B. Their "traditional" sauce was the best of the 3 for me: not too sweet, with a little tang. I would have liked a little heat, but that's me. GRADE: A-. The sprouts had me a little worried when I saw them, as they were quite large (halved), but NOT undercooked, as was my concern. They had a nice sear, a little bit of sweetness in the sauce and lots of bacon. GRADE: A-. The beans were really good. Cooked perfectly, not mushy, with just the right amount of bite. The sauce was sweet/tangy and they had lots of "goodies" added in, showing that the sides get just as much attention as the meats. The cornbread was moist & tasty. I got a corner piece which had a little bit of carmelization on the edges, a plus in my book. GRADE: A- Now for the meats! For the brisket, I opted for the lean and the fat (or flat & point). My first slice was just OK, but the others were significantly better. It was tender & moist, with decent flavor throughout. Brisket is the hardest meat to cook and Sean obviously knows what he's doing. GRADE: B+. Finally, the ribs, another star. I am NOT of the opinion that ribs should "fall off the bone" (a no-no in competitions) and thankfully, these did not. These St. Louis ribs were cooked darn near perfect for me and lots of yummy smoke flavor and just the right blend of flavors in the rub. I didn't put much sauce on either of the meats, as I really wanted to enjoy them as they were presented. GRADE: A. Co-owner Erica took and prepped my order and I also got a greeting from Pitmaster Sean. I will definitely be back, perhaps after they move to their new bigger space. I want to try more of their offerings and get more ribs & beans! Absolutely give them a try!!! read more

Solid BBQ spot in Wilmington. Grabbed a family meal to enjoy with the gang while we watched the Celtics at home. Code 1 is basically takeout only. Online ordering was easy and they were friendly and had things ready to go when I showed up. A veteran owned business with a cool story about the name. The food was good, as we tried a little bit of everything. The ribs (regular pork ribs, not baby back) were excellent. Good rub and smoke and didn't really need any sauce. Brisket was also good. Pulled pork was solid but not spectacular and the pulled chicken was just ok. Sides wise really liked the Cole slaw and potato salad along with the pickled onions. Baked beans were a plus. Brussels sprouts were so so. Came with a trio sauces -- Alabama white, which i had never had before so can't compare it to anything but I liked it. Texas red was a more traditional bbq sauce. the Carolina cold had a good mustardy tang to it. The banana pudding for dessert was fantastic. Brisket was probably what most people want in a brisket. Smokey and beefy. I really enjoy the overuse of a nice Brisket rub with the black pepper. The rub is definitely there on code one's brisket and it's great. I'm just weird. Excellent smoke ring again. First time I've ever been asked "lean or moist" for the cut preference. Thought that was funny. Usually it's "lean or fatty" or "flat or point" or something like that. Pulled pork was very very good. Moisture, seasoning, pork flavor and texture. Spot on! Not much fat chunks in there. Very good pulled pork Mac and cheese was disappointing. Just boiled pasta and some cheddar sauce. Turns into this peanut butter texture in your mouth. Baked beans were the perfect texture, the gravy was thick and not drippy. But the flavor was lost. It tasted more like a tomato paste that had some mild but familiar seasoning in it. Sauces: Alabama White was good but ... it's not like any other Alabama white I've ever had. It was more like a sour cream and onion dip flavor if it had a bunch of sugar in it. Texas Red was very unique. Very good sweet sauce if you're into that. Think there's pineapple or mango or both going on in there. Carolina gold: I love a gold sauce. This is yellow mustard with maybe a pinch of sugar. All in all it's really good bbq. Sides could use some work but there's like 10 other options to pick from. read more

A small shop with a very solid, basic barbecue menu and everything is done, right, in house, every day. It's hard to find a good barbecue in the north. Code 1 is a welcome exception. They only have four tables you pass through the stockroom to get to the bathroom and you can see every single thing they're doing. The more BBQ places you try the pickier you become; especially when comparing the limited options around MA...but Code 1 manages to fit in just fine. They aren't the best but there's plenty to like from this establishment. The location isn't the most convenient for me and there are other good bbq places near my home so I wouldn't go back unless I'm in the area or seriously craving it. We ordered the Sampler Dinner (Brussels and Collard sides), a 2-meat combo dinner (Corn salad and Coleslaw side), PB and Mac attack 16oz, Baked Beans 8oz and a Pork Belly Sandwich. Overall with tax and tip about $125. Pros: -Beef Brisket was juicy and they ask if you prefer fatty or lean. -Pork belly has great flavoring, off the menu item -Lots of variety for the sides -Red sauce is on point, not too sweet and has a nice sticky texture Cons: -Prices are a bit steep, for the portion sizes that they give I wouldn't call it the best value. -We were third in line but they messed up prioritizing which orders to make first so people that came after us got potato salad and by the time they got to our order they ran out. -They're new and still working out small business woes, they weren't open at 12:00 so we had to come back at 2:00. They also ran out of many items on the menu including beef ribs, corn bread, potato salad, Roasted potatoes, roasted carrots, and brisket chili. -Some of the meats needed more seasoning and smoking. The ribs in particular lacked a nice bark or coating of dry rub. There was some but overall it could've been more flavorful. -A 2-meat combo dinner for brisket and pork ribs came with the same amount of beef and pork ribs as the sampler. The 2-meat dinner is 27.99 but for 29.99 in the sampler you also get a quarter of chicken and a good amount of pulled pork too so the 2-meat combo was not worth the price. -It was a little disappointing that we were one of the first customers for the day and ordered the pork belly sandwich when no one else did then after we ordered they proceeded to offer people free samples of it. This was offered free to everyone there except us... -Mainly takeout, inside is quite small -Rude responses received from one of the owners, Erica. Very bad customer service. At first I said despite the gripes I would give it a try again at a much later date but then Erica went in on a rude tirade over social media. Brisket was moist and cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. This became a theme. Rice and beans, very bland Mac and cheese was excellent, full flavor and consistency! Best thing we tried. Corn bread, small dry, lacked flavor. Collard greens, cooked well, but again bland. Sheet cake was awesome, very rich. I also liked that they asked if you wanted lean, fatty + lean, or a fatty cut of brisket. Improvement areas: -flavor profile: The mac and cheese was lacking even salt and pepper. Additional spices or cheeses would make it better. The greens were okaaay, but again, more depth with the flavors was needed. The greens had bacon; I would have preferred smoked Turkey or ham hocks for more flavor. - cold sauces: this is a pet peeve of mine, but it makes a huge difference. If there was warm sauce or even room temp sauce to drizzle over the meets that would be better. - the brisket was decent. The large portion is what saved it. Tried their Steve Bowl, regular bowl, brisket burger, and peach pie and all of them were amazing. I love how you can choose fatty/leaner side of meat should you want to. And the consistency is top notch! Been there a few times and the meat was amazing all the time! Love their red sauce, nice and sweet goes so well with the brisket. But I gotta say their pork belly is AMAZING. Nice crunch on the outside but every bite is a burst of goodness. Get them early by themselves or in the Steve Bowl cause those gone fast! Another generously mediocre bbq joint in what is already a crowded field of subpar restaurants. Let's start with the service. I find the folks friendly, if a bit overbearing. Unfortunately for Code 1, that's where the pleasantries end. Allow me to address the ambiance. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place looks like if a pasta joint had a child with a deli and their kid is in preschool. If you have a fireplace there shouldn't be stickers on the wall, and the lack of contextual taste between the furniture, the walls, decor combined with the awkward floor plan creates an unsettling experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Now for the important part, the food. I've had a lot of barbecue in my life in a lot of different parts of the world and I understand that Wilmington isn't Texas, South Carolina, or Kansas City. However, that's not an excuse for indifference, this is exactly what I felt as I attempted to masticate dry brisket, pork belly, and practically inedible burned brussel sprouts. The rice and beans only had one bean and the cornbread was dry too. I think the business model is all wrong here. Why try to expand and be something you're not when you have high demand and low overhead. this isn't a business that's looking to scale, this is a mom and pop shop and when it comes to small business models I'm a big believer of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and unfortunately here, for me on this day, Code 1 returned broken. read more

Tried a new place in Wilmington, that I heard does a decent job with BBQ. Small place in a strip mall. Was about 40 min before they were closing and we asked if it was too late and they were fine with us coming in. They advised what they had for meats and sides available. After some thought, we looked at getting a two meat/2 side platter. The coat seemed a bit rich @ $34 each, but we wanted to give it a try. When we asked if we could get beef ribs, since they originally pushed them, they advised they could, but it would be a $20 up charge. So a 2 meat, 2 side platter is now $54 a person. What? Kind of absurd. We decided to instead try the brisket on a sandwich instead and if good, come back and get something more intense. A round roll sandwich that had 5-6 pieces of brisket a little cheese and buttered was $17 bucks. Not cheap but decent. Unfortunately the meat was unremarkable. Lacked a deep smokey taste and was not even warm. Glad we changed our mind before we invested serious cash for something that may have been mid at best. Probably won't be going back. Not worth the gamble to get something that may be different. Very nice and friendly staff/owners. Still in their first year of business but what they lack in experience they make for with care and effort. The BBQ was very good. The pulled pork sandwich with a side of cheesy grits were loved. The pork ribs (excellent) were tender with a nice smoke taste seasoned with lots of pepper. Sauce served on the side. Three sauces to choose from. The cheesy smashed potatoes were bland as others noted, the beans were tangy, though personally I prefer sweet they were still good.
