I ordered the banana-coconut-macadamia nut pancake. OMG! Bliss! Loved every forkful. Atmosphere is relaxed and fun. Think: Hawaiian style diner. Close to the bay, so most tables have some sort of view. This is not a fancy-pants kind of place -- I saw/heard mostly locals talking with the waitstaff and each other. I keep talking to everyone about how tasty my pancake was, and how nice the waitstaff were, and how good I felt at Coconut Grill, so, yeah, it was a winner :-) Looking forward to going back when I visit Hilo again! :-) read more

We stopped by for lunch and the food was great., the service was okay. Our server kept his distance from us making us feel very uncomfortable. We stopped for breakfast on 8/22/22 at 10:30 the same server made a comment to the hostess and the hostess told us that they were not serving breakfast anymore and they were planning to take a break before lunch. We felt like the waiter did not want it to serve us. We felt discriminated against., it unfortunately to find this king of behavior at coconut island restaurant. 3.5 stars We were staying at the adjoining Hilo Seaside Hotel and they offered vouchers for free breakfast from Coconut Grill. There were three options for the free breakfasts: 1) an healthy option of a half papaya, a mini bowl of hot oatmeal, banana bread, and strawberry yogurt; 2) flapjack griddle pancakes, with ham and and two eggs; and 3) the Locals Breakfast which was two eggs, choice of link sausage, ham, port sausage, or bacon, choice of rice or home fried potatoes, and choice of white or wheat toast. Each breakfast option comes with choice of coffee or tea or orange juice. The coffee, which is Kona Paradise coffee, is refillable, but the orange juice is not. Not being a fan of papaya, we choice to order the pancakes and the locals breakfasts. Our server was great - she was friendly and professional. Our breakfasts tasted fine. Our eggs were cooked the way we requested. With the pancakes came coconut syrup (yum!) and maple syrup. And for our toast, our server brought us strawberry jam and guava jam (yum!). The pancakes were huge. As we were eating our food, we saw another table getting the waffles topped with fresh strawberries and that looked really good. There are a lot more breakfast options if you order off of the regular menu. But for free breakfast, this worked out great for us and filled us up for the day ahead. read more

This is my go to place for breakfast, especially after work in the mornings. They serve great alcoholic beverages as well. I always have great service here. They revamped their menu and it is amazing! The sizzling prime rib hash is my new fav. Their chicken & waffles are great! Understandably, COVID is here and they are doing great with customer service. However, I wish I was told that was going to be charged for horseradish- $1.29. I was given a quarter of horseradish the first time so I asked for a second one. That may not seem like a lot and I would be ok with paying it, but would love to hear about the expense prior to giving it to me. Having it show up on my bill as "side dressing", just caught me off guard. When I talked to the waiter named Archleon, he didn't take his time explaining it to me. He gave me attitude about "oh, it's free for the first one but second one you gotta pay." He walked away while taking my payment during our conversation, didn't talk to me when he got back to the table. I know Covid is affecting restaurants and I am ok with paying extra, but let a customer know beforehand. Otherwise, this one minor set back does not change my take on this restaurant. First off, shout out to Wendilynn, our server! Sweet personality not only to us, but to all in the restaurant. First time here and we had breakfast. The food comes out quick and hot...and it's so 'ono! Get half order of their kama'aina eggs Benedict cause it's massive for a half order. The whole order could probably feed a family of six, lol! If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Maybe 1 star goes the the server for bringing us our food. But, the food was way overpriced and not edible. I got the coconut shrimp which was the whole reason why we came to this restaurant because, I was craving some good fresh made coconut shrimp. Unfortunately, this tastes like the same stuff I get from Costco but, it only comes with 4 pieces and it was worse than when I make it in the air fryer bc it was dripping in grease. My husband got the beef flat bread which also tasted like it was frozen and smelled like old cheese. The flatbread was sopping in grease, we did not eat it. My husband will eat anything but he did not eat this which truly says something. We actually laughed bc it was so bad. We were in hawaii for 16 days and this restaurant was by far our least favorite of the entire trip. Even ranks lower than the gas station burritos my husband ordered one time that has been a running joke and what we occasionally compare poor meals to. To top our experience off, the bill came to around $65 before tip which is roughly equivalent to 10 boxes of costcos coconut shrimp. We don't mind paying for quality but this was just not it. If your vacationing in Hawaii, don't waste your money here. If we didn't live 5000 miles away we still wouldn't be back! read more

Absolutely delicious! We had a wonderful server who gave us good options on their menu, all of which turned out much better than expected! Chefs special that day was stuffed grilled ahi and my husband and I had that plate cleaned in under five minutes it was so good. Their Paniolo pork ribs fell off the bone so easily and also tasted delicious. Their kalbi sliders were also very good. I ate at Coconut Grill twice during my vacation to Hilo. I normally avoid doubling back to any restaurant but the breakfast was so good that I wanted to try it again for dinner. For breakfast I had the prime rib omelette with pancakes. They were delicious. The meat was very flavorful. The pancakes were soft and moist. I also had the sausage fritters which were amazing. They weren't overly sweet. The fresh banana bread that was provided for free was very tasty as well. For dinner had the Kalbi short ribs which were perfection. The fresh kimchi was different than the typical kimchi I had but I loved the taste. The garlic mashed potatoes were very flavorful as well. If I'm ever back in Hilo this will be spot number one that I grab food from. read more

Their service was great, someone seats and brings water, waiter to take order and provide food and a waitress to keep your coffee toped off. We called before we drove to coconut grill. We asked how long the wait was they said 10-15 minutes. We get there for breakfast we Waited 15 minutes to be told it would be another 20 minutes. 17 minutes into that wait the hostess came out and told us the manager just told her to announce that they will no longer be serving breakfast since they are so backed up on the kitchen. tldr; Bad service, so-so food at high prices: go to Verna's down the road a tiny bit, they're great. Better to eat in your car than eat in Coconut Grill. If you really gotta have a sit-down, go to Hawaiian Style Cafe, which is a five minute drive from the Coconuts. They are often super busy, worth the wait. Long version: Service was bad, so that could bias my feelings about the food. However, I'm kind of looking back at all the meals I've had there, and service wasn't bad every time, just usually. Take that into account. I don't go here very often, maybe once or twice a year, so since I moved to Hilo in 2004, twenty something times? The food as described on the menu sounds great, and prices seem appropriate for that description, but when it gets to the table, there's something about the food that misses the mark. Like, I'm looking at the ingredients, as far as I can tell they're all about right, but somehow it's just not prepared well. Or maybe the quality of the ingredients is low, and there's only so much you can do with that? I don't know. Visually it's appealing, but taste, texture, smell? I'd be way better off just making that at home. So that makes the food overpriced, and ultimately not worth my time, money, or even the calories. You'd be way better off going to Verna's (200 feet down the road?) and getting the smoked meat plate or the chili cheese fries. And, the service is really hit or miss. So half the time you'd be better off going to Verna's and eating in your car than sitting down for a meal here. My wife is semi-regular (she comes here about once a month to have breakfast with some friends). They go early, usually it's some guy working who she says does a great job. She's a huge fan of the "free banana bread" they bring her with her breakfast. But when I'm there, we never get that guy. In this last visit, the young lady was not very good, and mildly rude. Then when I paid, they carded me for my credit card? I don't know if that has every happened to me before, from anyone. I'd have noticed if they were doing that for other people, they weren't. Just me. So that cost that young woman $10 in tip, and I think that's fair. Servers are welcome to card me for my credit card, and I'll reduce their tip by $10. Easy money, they're obviously doing well enough that they don't need anyway. read more

We were leaving a long weekend in volcano and felt the need for a hot, delicious breakfast. Coconut Grill in Hilo is just such a place (they do lunch too but haven't tried it yet.) Our server (Aaron) was super efficient and upbeat. He seemed that way with every table no matter who was sitting there -- babies or hard of hearing patrons. All of our food was delicious and piping hot. Coffee was fresh and tea too, kids' juice was chilled and served promptly. And we ordered a lot of different stuff! We had eggs Benedict's and omelettes, banana bread and bacon, scrambles and waffles. All of it was fantastic. I swear And the portions were huge! Lucky we ordered before the table that came in behind us, because they ran out of eggs. I ordered a Cappuccino - the machine was broken. Asked for side of avocado - no avocado.
