Cocoa + Co had been on my radar for a bit, but I am not usually in the area, and when I am, I'm rarely out looking for baked goods or coffee. I finally checked it out Sunday while using a promo code from Caviar, which apparently was the wrong thing to do. When I went to pick my order, the male barista made sure to take my order from the female at the counter and, rather rudely, tell me to only order directly from them. No "Hey, we appreciate you coming in, but in the future, do us a favor and order direct." No thank you. Nothing but a "greeting" that would turn off any customer. I understand these delivery apps all take a cut, but they are also one of the top ways customers are finding new locations to try. You should never admonish someone for finding your establishment and giving it a shot. Immediately, I was not set up for a positive experience. I took home an assortment of baked goods and chocolate. The s'mores ganache was quite delicious, however, the few cookies and bars I had were average at best - I came in specifically for the apricot/pistachio cookie, and found it be nearly flavorless, all butter and flour. I'm sure many of the employees are lovely people, and perhaps some of their other offerings are more enjoyable, but there are certainly better options for baked goods and coffee in the area. read more

This place is crazy! It is a "coffee shop" but hot chocolate is the star. Sometimes at chocolate shops this is the case, but I've never seen small processors emphasized so heavily. They really know what they're doing, where their product is sourced from and have a passion for the craft of chocolate. I got a salted Carmel hot chocolate which was absolutely insane. Cocoa + Co. is basically a cafe with a "chocolatey" menu. For someone like me who isn't a big coffee drinker but enjoys the vibes of coffee shops and loves chocolate, this place was perfect! There is not 1, not 2, not 3, but 6 different flavors of hot chocolate available in addition to a broad selection of pastries and other chocolate treats. The drinks were a little pricey, but not anything significantly more than what you'd expect at any coffee shop for specialty drinks. Stopped by Cocoa+ Co. to get a mid-afternoon drink and snack with some friends while we were in the area. From the minute you step in, you can definitely tell that it's more on the upscale side. We initially headed here because the Yelp page looked promising, and the reviews raved about the quality. The staff is generally nice and helpful with offering suggestions, but weren't really friendly or welcoming, even though the place was pretty deserted at the time we stopped by. It definitely does look fancy and instagrammable, which may be part of its appeal. I ordered a Chai Latte and had a slice of Banana Bread, while my friends opted for Coffees and other pastries. I can't speak too much to their experience, but mine was pretty mediocre. The Chai was not bad, but not special in any way either. The banana bread was kind of sub par, which is unfortunate because I was really yearning for some solid banana bread. Overall I'd say this place is probably overhyped, but if I had to go back I'd try a Hot Chocolate and a different kind of pastry. Cocoa + Co is an adorable cafe all about that indulgent chocolate. My friend and I stopped in for a drink and treat and had a lovely time sitting in the back area. They apparently do tastings back there sometimes and on the day we were in were doing a Build Your Own BonBon box for Valentine's Day - so cute. The staff was all insanely nice, helpful and personable. I was surprised to find such friendly service actually. They have a ton of bonbons, some chocolate peanut butter treats, chocolate bark, chocolate cookies, chocolate brownies and if you really need something less potent, you could get a biscotti as my friend did. *rollseyes* Who gets coffee and biscotti in a chocolate shop!? My friend. That's who. Now me, I went with a rich dark chocolate cocoa and a large, soft and chewy chocolate peanut butter cookie. Both delivered in terms of flavor and I'd love to try more of their offerings. I also got a milk chocolate peanut butter treat which was their version of a Reese's and I absolutely loved it. Is there any better combination than chocolate & peanut butter!? I liked the variety of truffles I got here. My favorites were the hazlenut and chocolate raspberry. The banana chocolate bread was ok. I did not care for the smores bar because it tastes like it has cinnamon in it, not a fan of the combination. I tried the hot chocolate and it was ok but better at L.A. Burdick. I bought a couple chocolate bars. I loved Fruition dark chocolate, my new favorite. I liked that one better than Pump Street dark. This is a cool shop and a worthy stop in the area. read more

I have a special place in my heart for local coffee shops and literally stumbled upon this one! What a neighborhood gem. Pleasant employees, great ambiance, and really good coffee/ baked goods. They make a really good latte, some great desserts and good music. I got a latte and a brownie and was pleasantly surprised how great it was. Crazy militant. We came in on a Sunday morning to have coffee and croissants and sat down at a table and had our masks off because we were drinking our coffee and eating our croissants. We actually had a piece of croissant in our hands ready to put into our mouth and the young lady from behind the counter runs over to our table and tells us we need to put on our masks immediately in between drinks and eating. (and if you don't love chocolate, please go to your doctor and get that checked out immediately) This adorable Old Town cafe has the most delicious drinking chocolate in a variety of flavors. You can also add espresso shots or just order a standard espresso drink. I haven't tried the food or actual chocolate yet, but everything looks great. Originally wanted to go to the juice spot next door, but when I saw the sign for ice cream sandwiches, I couldn't resist but to go in! There were 4 different flavors: coffee toffee, chocolate chocolate chip, peppermint and vanilla. I ended up going with the chocolate chocolate chip. The outsides were oreo patties, the inside was filled with chocolate ice cream and there were chocolate chips along the sides. Honestly it was a chocolate lover's dream come true. I do have a very sweet tooth and enjoyed absolutely every single bite of it on a hot and humid day. My friend got a salted caramel frozen hot chocolate. While he enjoyed it, I didn't like it. It was too salty for me and had a weird after taste to it. I'd love to return for their ice cream sandwiches and to try some of their baked goods. Had an awesome visit to Cocoa + Co with my girlfriend. We shared a chocolate croissant and regular hot cocoa. The croissant was very flaky and light with the perfect amount of chocolate chunks mixed in - absolutely perfect, and I'm not usually a croissant fan. The hot cocoa was excellent as well. It had a strong chocolate taste (not at all like store bought powder) and was sweet enough to be tasty but not overpowering. The service was great as well. Both workers were very friendly, offered suggestions, and seemed knowledgeable about the differences between the different menu items. Really disappointing experience here today. Brought a friend and his service dog by for the first time, and an employee wearing glasses at the cashier's stand raised her voice to say dogs weren't allowed before we even crossed the threshold into the shop. We were so taken aback by her tone that we ultimately turned around and left instead of clarifying that the dog was a service animal. I can understand where she was coming from, but staff here needs to be educated against making assumptions about small service dogs. Please ask in the future. read more

If I try an amazing new place while on a trip, then I consider that a success! For this trip to see family in Chicago, Cocoa + takes that award. My family is notoriously difficult when it comes to finding something we all like and can eat (I'm vegetarian , my sister is lactose intolerant, mom has celiacs..dad is just picky..) but we all loved this place! It is adorable and the people working here are super nice and helpful. I ordered the Mayan drinkin chocolate, my mom and dad got peppermint drinking chocolate served in a cute snowman mug, and my sister got a mango matcha latte. We also got a blondie and a peanut butter rice crispie treat, both which were yummy! I loved my hot chocolate, it was rich and just slightly spicy. I only got the 8 oz and couldn't finish it, but really loved it. My parents and sister liked their drinks too! The Rice Krispie treat was delicious and I need to recreate it, the chocolate ganache on top is delightful! I would love to come back. read more

I will preface this review by saying that even though I am lactose intolerant, I popped a couple (okay 4) Lactaids so I could truly enjoy their hot chocolate. I ordered the mocha ecstasy one which tbh was good...but not as amazing as the moroccan hot chocolate my friend ordered. That was truly unique and unlike anything I've ever tasted before. Chocolate lover's dream combined with coffee and other amazing desserts! During rush hours, this place gets packed and for good reason! The seating is nice here to hang out for a bit and sip on your beverage or nibble on your food, the staff members are attentive and efficient, the caffeinated beverages are plentiful with something for everyone, and the options for desserts are amazing as well. We came here specifically for the Ice Cream Sandwiches and delicious coffee to cool us down from the hot Chicago day. The Coffee Toffee Ice Cream sandwich was not overly sweetened at all! The coffee flavor was mild, but the hints of it was wonderful. The toffee bits inside made each bite delightfully crunchy along with the creaminess of the ice cream. The nut bits encrusted on the outside were slightly salted which gave an even more dynamic bite each time. The Chocolate Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwich was dense and heavy in all the right ways! The chocolate flavor was amazing, but you don't feel weighed down and heavy from finishing it at all! The chocolate chips encrusted on the sides were rich and also made for a nice crunch. I'm obsessed with this place. This place is the one food-related establishment I will miss when I leave Chicago. During my month in Chicago, I went to Cocoa + Co. 4 times (which is a lot for a dessert place!). The chocolate here is actually legit, so get things that show it off! The s'more and peanut butter bomb were good, but I think the s'moreyness and peanut butter cupness overwhelmed all sense of the chocolate, so there wasn't much of a point to pay $3-4/each for them. I adore the chocolate chocolate chip ice cream sandwich. It's chocolate ice cream in beween two large Oreo cookies, with chocolate chunks on the sides as well as throughout the ice cream, and every part of it is A++++. It's also surprisingly not that messy to eat despite being an ice cream sandwich. I've had three frozen hot chocolates in my life--one in DC and two in Chicago--and Cocoa + Co.'s frozen dark hot chocolate is the only one that has impressed me so far. It seems difficult to avoid being so creamy that it's basically a milkshake while simultaneously avoiding being so icy that it becomes some kind of weird chocolate ice water--but Cocoa + Co. strikes the balance perfectly. Their frozen hot chocolate is luxurious and not too icy, and you can really tell that the chocolate in it is high quality. Finally, the employees are really friendly, and it's a nice place to work. Just moved down the street and this spot has quickly become a favorite. First of all it smells incredible in there and has such warm, cozy vibes. I've been trying their seasonal lattes (maple and lumberjack are favorites; not too sweet and rich espresso) but you can't go wrong with a cappuccino or regular iced latte. I think they have the most incredible almond croissant with a rich layer of almond paste, and their scones are not too be missed. New pastry chef is knocking it out there! Can't wait to grab some chocolates for friends and family around the holidays. read more
