As we walked in, we were greeted immediately and asked if we preferred high tables in the bar area or dining and were seated right away. We ended up choosing to sit by the bar and were greeted by our server/bartender timely. We ordered chips and salsa, chips were warm and crisp to perfection salsa was super good! We ended up ordering the burrito, enchiladas and garlic shrimp. Everything was really good BUT the garlic shrimp was to die for! Definitely worth the $40! The sauce, the serving, the size of the shrimp...just amazing. And our server made our visit such a pleasant experience. I'd also like to add, well kept restrooms for customers say so much about an establishment. Highly recommend this place!

The parking lot is also pretty tight since the entire back row is reserved for employees

Actually was quite pleasantly surprised that we liked the Venezuelan food. The lady at the counter…read morewas friendly and helpful. Lots of plant based options. Beans were well cooked and flavored. So was the rice. The bananas/ plantains added good sweet flavor to the whole meal. The coconut cheese was interesting. Never had that before but it did taste like cheese and added flavor. The jackfruit arepa sandwich that we had, could have had the jackfruit, cheese, plantains mixed together better. The jackfruit bowl was better as it was easier to mix everything and get all the flavors together. Pretty much same as the sandwich but a little more and easier to mix (so would recommend the bowl over the sandwich). The sandwich seemed to be made of rice. We also had a mango and a coconut slushie drink. The mango tasted like the mango concentrate from Costco (sugary) and the coconut was a little more original/ different. We liked both though. Limited indoor seating. Outdoor seating available. Steady flow of patrons. The only thing I didn't like was that the price was a bit high though in my opinion but I guess everything in Maui is that high priced. Update: went back and got a coconut slushie drink again :) and tried the plant based mushroom and cheese (coconut cheese) and fish empanada. They were delicious with the mushroom being our favorite. The chipotle sauces and cilantro onion sauces were delicious as well! The empanadas are not made to order (they are premade so you cannot seperate out the cheese from the mushroom but it does not have a strong flavor). I also liked the coconut slushie by itself vs mixed with mango. Note: The empanadas come in 2: when you eat in house, a red Chipotle sauce and white cilantro onion sauce are given with it (as well as with the arepas); there is another sauce for vegans (think it's a cilantro/ oil/ spice sauce). We liked the white sauce better than the vegan sauce. The empanadas are not made to order (they are premade). If you order to go, you are only given once sauce. If you want more than one, you need to just add it on before you leave with the big dispensers. Otherwise, you only get one sauce (not sure why you can't just add white and red sauce in the same to go container but we weren't given the option). And, to make things worse, the lady said curtly she would charge me next time for 2 sauces "due to the plastic". well, thank you for not charging me but the statement was unnecessary IMHO. Note for improvement (and for this, I was tempted to drop the star rating): we came here multiple times and gave your business a lot of our dollars (about 135.00), yet the above statement, I don't think was necessary if you are trying to provide good customer service. You should gladly offer extra of the sauce or even, as I suggested above, allow customers to add the sauce themselves if they want more than 1 sauce and you don't want us to "use up your plastic containers". Kind of left a bad taste in our mouths.

Mala Ocean Tavern has an absolutely beautiful setting. Sitting on the patio, listening to the waves…read moreand watching the sunset made for a really nice atmosphere. The service was friendly and welcoming as well. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite match the setting for us. Several dishes were overly salty, and the value for the portion sizes was disappointing. For example, five small prawns were $45, and the whole fried fish was $99. The calamari starter was also disappointing. It wasn't fresh calamari, but rather fried calamari strips that seemed like the type that come frozen in a bag. The bruschetta wasn't really bruschetta either. It was more like an open-faced sandwich. At these prices, I expected better quality, preparation, and portion sizes. It's definitely a place where you're paying a premium for the oceanfront view and atmosphere. Beautiful location and friendly service, but the food and overall value fell short for us.

The remodeled Aloha Mixed Plate looks much better than the old location, but unfortunately the…read moreexperience did not live up to the hype--or the prices. We left disappointed by the unfriendly service, very small portions, and a bill that felt wildly out of proportion to what we received. Our experience The setting is attractive and the renovation is a real improvement. However, the service lacked the warm, welcoming aloha spirit we hoped for, especially at a restaurant that markets itself as a Maui favorite. The pricing was the biggest issue: - $17.50 for an appetizer of only five wings. - $35.50 for a kalbi plate that amounted to roughly 2 1/2 ribs, chopped into seven or eight small pieces. - $19 for a small serving of mochiko chicken bites. - The kids' sliders were just two tiny burgers on Hawaiian sweet rolls. For two entrées, one appetizer, and two non-alcoholic drinks, our total came to more than $110. That is difficult to justify when both the portion sizes and overall service fell short. Bottom line We understand that Maui is expensive and that restaurants face high operating costs. Still, charging premium prices should come with generous portions, consistently good food, and genuinely hospitable service. Aloha Mixed Plate may have a beautiful new space, but at these prices, it feels overhyped and not like a good value. We hope they reconsider the portion sizes and customer experience, because the lack of aloha and the high prices could easily turn visitors away rather than make them want to return.
