I am updating my review and adding an additional star. Service is much friendlier now. Not sure if it's because I'm a regular now or if they were just having bad days on my previous visits. They still have the buy 5 get 1 free banh mi. Banh mi are $5 each now, but still delicious. Although the bread varies from visit to visit. Sometimes it's crispy baguette bread and sometimes it's softer bread more like submarine sandwich bread. The Vietnamese desserts are good. I haven't received any spoiled desserts again after that one isolated incident I previously wrote about. They have Che Ba Mau (tri-colour dessert) for $4 and Che Dau Trang (white bean dessert) for $3. They also have Che Sam Bo Luong (longan, lotus seeds and seaweed dessert), which I've never purchased. I've had this dessert before elsewhere and wasn't a huge fan, which is why I've never had it at Co Cham. I think it's more of an acquired taste, and definitely more exotic than the other 2 desserts, lol. I still haven't dined in at this restaurant yet and have only gotten banh mi and desserts for takeout. With frou-frou eateries selling banh mi for $15+ each (admittedly, I have never had these overpriced banh mi), I'm very happy that Co Cham still sells them for an affordable price. When it comes to a quick lunch, nothing beats a $3 Banh Mi from Co Cham. I usually run in and get the assorted one and it is ready within about 45 seconds. I love the fresh cilantro and pickes that they put into it. Careful with asking for it to be made spicy because they put chopped chillies into it with the seeds and it is quite the kick..... no ....it's not jussi a kick, it's a WTF moment! I think this is Ottawa's SECOND best Pho. But it's truly a great little Somerset gem. Caesar is an awesome server. Super friendly and loves to talk. His Mom (or aunt or grandma) is typical Viet old lady - not friendly...super curt and a bit rude. But to the food: Pho is delicious. Broth is fragrant and flavourful. Only comes in one size - take it or leave it. Grilled meats with egg over rice is delightful. And the Banh Mi are amazing. To go and only $3. Highly recommended!! Co Cham is a hidden gem located in Ottawa's Chinatown! Got there around noon over the Victoria Day long weekend and the place filled up pretty quickly. We ordered 3 dishes and shared them among 4 people: 1. Grilled Pork+ Shredded Pork + Fried Egg + Rice 2. Spring Rolls + Vermicelli 3. Rare Beef Pho The portion was huge and the food was so delicious! My favourite dish was the Spring Rolls + Vermicelli. The spring rolls were deep fried and were really crispy. This is a super cute family owned restaurant. A little small and cozy for size but nice interior for a Vietnamese restaurant. Very clean and tidy. The dishes are all under 10$ which is nice on the wallet. I go here for the rice dishes!! Number 26: grilled beef and chicken on rice is my absolute fav. It's 9$ and is such a comforting dish. The chicken is always cooked to perfection - thinly sliced but still juicy -- and the beef is just as good! Both are packed with flavor. This dish is ever so simple but is just so good every time. Bun Bo Hue: special noodle bowl form the Hue province. I really like the broth in this noodle soup -- its just slightly spicy in a beef broth - I do however prefer it with rice noodles so I do always swap out the noodles that it does come with (typically thicker and more cylinder shaped noodles instead of the flatter thinner rice noodle) Also ordered a vietnamese iced coffee: bold, smooth and strong with the slight sweetness of condense milk. You should definitely try vietnamese coffee if you haven't yet! Sandwiches : Your average vietnamese sub - nothing too special. I've yet to try the vermicelli dishes or pho here. read more

I have tried a few Vietnamese restaurants but none came close to the freshness/the flavors of the foods and the friendliness of the staff. I ate the hot rolls as an appetizer and it comes with an ample dipping sauce on the side. I had the 3 meat grilled with rice and cucumbers. Absolutely amazing and flavorful. When we ordered we thought she left the order pad on the table by mistake, because she acted confused as hell that we didn't write the order numbers on there for her. Ummmm.... last I checked you have to give your order to the waitress and she takes your order and brings it to the chef to cook. But apparently not here. She says.... You didn't write your order. I found this restaurant based on other Yelp recommendations and wasn't disappointed. The place seats around 30 people and based on the fact that it was almost full I figured it would be good. I was wrong - it was great! Probably the best pho I've ever had. The serving size was easily enough for two people. Everything on the menu is under $10. You would easily pay more for lower quality as well as smaller portions at other places. The staff was friendly and did a great job to make sure that we enjoyed our meal. The BEST Vietnamese subs are here. We always get the assorted subs and they're never a disappointment. Quality and recipe is consistent no matter what time of day you go in to order. The subs are take out only item but the food in the restaurant is also very good. My favourite thing on the menu would be the pork chops. This is my favourite Vietnamese resto in Ottawa Chinatown, among the dozens literally in the same block. Plenty of pho, bun, rice, and soup options to choose from, and I sometimes order multiple dishes so I can sample more, and their large portions for everything means I get to enjoy the meals again as leftovers. Their grilled pork rice dish and rice noodles in beef stew are highly recommended. Plus, prices are very reasonable. Just like everyone else, I love their take-out bahn mi (Vietnamese subs); I wouldn't bother with the other flavours because the classic assorted one is the best. Unfortunately, in 2014 they've increased their price from "ridiculously cheap" ($2.25 each) to merely "very cheap" ($3.00 each) - but obviously they're still the best sandwich deal in the city apart from maybe La Bottega's $5 sandwiches. Pro-tip: make sure you request that NO chili peppers be added to your sandwich if you don't like it spicy, or you might be in for a fiery surprise when you bite into the bahn mi!! As for the service, it's definitely above average in comparison to what you'd normally expect from an Asian establishment (aka only being served the food and the bill). The owner lady is very attentive to your requests, and refills your tea/water often and clears dishes without needing to be asked, and she even asks how your meals are at times. (But this is just a nice bonus, because you don't visit an Asian establishment for the service.) read more

I've been in Ottawa since 1999 and this is my goto place for Vietnamese rice or vermicelli dishes. Good price, generous portions, variety, efficient service. My favorite is always 30a, the rice with mixed meat, and we're talking lots of meat. The rice paper rolls are good but the dipping sauce heavenly. I stopped by here after looking to satisfy my craving for banh mi. There were lots of pictures of food from this place so I decided to have lunch at Co Cham. The interior was a bit underlit and crowded with tables considering that the restaurant doesnt occupy much space anyways. I ordered the #30 that has grilled beef, shredded pork and fried egg over rice with slices of tomato and a vinegary sweet sauce to pour on top. I was debating between the beef and the pork. The beef was marinated nicely and very flavourful. The only downside was that the beef was a little tough. I may just have to get the pork next time to compare. However what made up for that was the huge serving for $8.95. I was just barely able to finish my meal. I also ordered the cold vietnamese ice coffee. Usually its served with a small metal french drip filter over a glass with condensed milk and ice on the side to adjust to your taste but I was served everything mixed together in a to-go cup.
