    Perfect Afternoon in Paso!

Beautiful, casual atmosphere, great wines and knowledgeable staff. The cheese pairings were perfect with the wine.

Clos Solene was our last tasting in our trip to Paso and boy oh boy did it end our trip with a bang!! When we arrived we were given a glass of rosé by our guide Ty and he welcomed us to the estate warmly. After asking a simple question about the current grape vines that were in front of us, Ty invited us to go out into the field and try a grape for ourselves. This was so fun and such an amazing way to start our experience. After this we were seated in our tasting in the cellar and Ty tried to make our space as comfortable as possible by moving a heater towards us and constantly refilling our water. He then guided us through our whole tasting, describing each wine and helping us identify what we were tasting as well. Shoutout to Ty, this man deserves a raise. About halfway through he got us some bread and cheese to try with the wines to highlight their nuances and to see what they might go with. We enjoyed talking with our guide and learning more about this winery and the future that it holds. At the end we had to buy a bottle and cannot wait to open it up and experience Clos Solene once again!

Date of Visit: 6/15/2024 During our June trip to Central Coast, we visited 3 wineries in total. The second one we went to is the Clos Solène Winery. Clos Solène is a family-owned winery in the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles by French natives Guillaume and Solène Fabre. This is a small production winery that only makes around 3,500 cases per year with the influence of the owner's French heritage. The wine tasting is $50 per person and is usually held at the outdoor patio surrounded by the beautiful 17 acres of vines. The owner Guillaume and Solène acquired the estate in January 2017, the existing vineyard was planted in 1998 onto vigorous rootstock. After many years of testing, there are 10 different varieties and 16 different clones. Half of the vineyard was grafted to Rhone varieties and the other half was grafted with Bordeaux varieties. It was sunny and warm on the day we visited, and we sat at the outside patio under the shade first, but decided to move indoors after the indoor party left. There is currently only one indoor tasting table now, but Clos Solène recently received the permit to build a cave tasting room and to store all the wines in the same area. 2023 La Rose We were greeted with the La Rose that was made with 72% Grenache Noir, 18% Grenache Gris, 10% Mourvèdre. It has aromatic layers and minerality. The color was not as pink as a regular rosé. 2022 Hommage Blanc The second wine is the 2022 Hommage Blanc, and the composition is 80% Roussanne,16% Viognier, and 4% Grenache Blanc. This wine was aged 70% in neutral French Oak and 20% in new French Oak, and 10% in amphora sandstone tank. This one is crisp and great to drink in hot summer. After we moved into the indoor tasting room with air conditioning, the experience was much better. The tasting room was tiny with only one table, and some of the staff will need to enter to get something during our tasting experience too. Our hostess took us to the wine making room next door. There were french oak barrels, glass, sand stone and concrete wine tanks that did the fermentation. 2021 Fleur de Solène The third wine is the 2021 Fleur de Solène, it is made for the wife of the winemaker, Solène. This one is made with 49% Syrah, 26% Grenache, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Overly it is very smooth and silky with a decent amount of tannins. 2021 Harmonie The iconic GSM with 72% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, and 12% Syrah. Grapes were 100% sourced from Willow Creek AVA, with sweet aromas of Grenache and very elegant tannins. 2021 Hommage a nos Paris Reserve The last wine was made with 96% Syrah, 2% Grenache, 2% Viognier, which was the first red Clos Solène started back in 2008. It is balanced with acidity and with mid palate tannin structure.

Everything about this place is magical. It's off the beaten path, unpretentious but quality, and just plain good. The service was excellent and fun and the ambiance was laid back but beautiful. Just charming overall. Highly recommend.

OF COURSE YOU NEED TO GO HERE!!!! NO QUESTIONS!!! HANDS DOWN! LOVE STORY OF THE DECADE! Cute little winery stuck in the hills of Paso Robles. This winery is a part of the Wine Maker's home. Like you see on television with the home connected to the winery? Yup.... We had the pleasure of wine tasting in the Barrel Room.... What a treat! Things you need to know: Clos Solene is part of the French Connection in Paso Robles. (you need to visit them to know the whole story) I doubt you find their vintages in retail stores.... Best way is their Club When you go, hopefully Selene of Clos Solene will have some fresh baked bread You need a reservation for tastings. I fell in love with their Champagne... a bottle came home with me. As for the Love Story of the Decade? Here again, you will need to visit to hear it I look forward to my next visit to this great winery located in a great little city.

Clos Solene Winery is a wonderful place for a more intimate wine tasting experience! Reservations are required here, but for those who have visited dozens of different tasting rooms or more, this place will definitely stand out! With a romantic love story, smooth wines, views of the vineyards, and a dedicated wine attendant, this is probably one of the top wineries/wine estates to visit in Paso Robles. They serve fresh French bread as part of their wine tasting service.

    Great welcome.

Probably the best winery experiences that we have had. We had reservations and were made to feel special. When we first arrived there we met with a very friendly young man (name we forgot). He loves his job and it showed. Tried a little of everything and I just jot my shipment (Nashville)!! Fast. The wines were superb and the tasting experience in a little room with a great view made us feel like we were in France. Little tour of barrel room and we were impressed that a small place like this makes such big wines. Hear all about the amazing owners and their children. He was very passionate and about this winery and the owners....so much pride. Each wine was so different. Very polished wines and no fruit bombs, rather French styled with American flair. Could not have been better and I can not wait to open the dessert wine. What is not to like about this classy and very sophisticated winery. We are now on the list and can not wait for the next shipment. Thanks so much, you made our trip.

Another Paso trip and another visit to Clos Selene. Simply said we love this winery. Our hostess was Cami. She was so friendly and fun and her Bourdeaux accent made the whole experience that much more authentic. We felt like we were in the South of France. Guillaume really knows how to craft a bottle of wine. Everything we tasted was very smooth and drinkable. Velvety, juicy fruit with soft, silky tannins. We came home with 2 bottles, Harmonie and Hommage a Nos Pairs. Cami told us about the future plans for the winery and the cave that they are going to put in the hillside. Can't wait to see that. We will be back soon.

We are members here and scheduled a tasting with some friends who live in the area. We were greeted with a nice Sauvignon Blanc and seated at an outdoor table for our tasting. The outdoor tasting patio is rustic and surrounded by beautiful hills of vineyards and it was a perfect day for wine! Our server Ryan grew up in the area and was very knowledgeable of the wines and process. If you like French style wines, this is a place you need to try!

Six stars for Clos Selene Winery!! Guillaume and Selene have done a remarkable transformation of the former Pipestone Vineyard. Purchased in 2017, they have created an excellent atmosphere and wine . Guillaume (I hope I'm spelling this correctly) is a third plus generation winemaker from France . And he has been paying attention to his grandfather and father's instructions!! Everything we tasted here today was excellent. An appointment is required to taste and I highly recommend that you do just that, when you are in the Paso Robles area!!

We came to pick up wine we ordered a few weeks ago at a wine tasting event for their spring wines and stayed for a wine tasting of the Fall wines. And we ended up buying more wine from their fall collection, as well as joining their membership. It was fun. 106° but pleasant in the tasting room The first road from 101 is much easier than the next road at the turnabout. We left the winery heading to 101 and it was much easier than coming in from 46.

This winery is a first must stop on your day if you're vino tasting in Paso. I've been wine tasting for years in Paso and never been to Close Solène. My sister and I were absolutely impressed by the beautiful winery, amazing wines and personal service provided by our wine host, Alice. She was friendly and so knowledgeable. Now I can see why it's by appointment only. Every detail of our experience was well thought out and personal. The history of the wine maker and his journey is truly a movie. When we tasted the wines I can taste the passion and generational knowledge passed down from his ancestors. This winery is officially one of my favorites in Paso now. I still can't believe it has less than 60 reviews. It's a hidden gem in Paso. I bought the Harmonie 2020. Can't wait to visit again.

"If you put your confidence in me and follow me, I will offer you, in the New World, a Clos Solène, where the aromas will be more intense and the colors more brilliant, reflecting what I create with you as my muse." STORY: If I were to tell the story of the winery I'd exceed the character limit, so here's a video that will tell it for you (https://vimeo.com/103538401) *** I am a romantic at heart. I love a good love story, and the origin story of Clos Solène evoked emotions in me akin to reading "The Notebook". I first learned about the winery through the "Tin City" documentary, which I watched as part of the meticulous research I do whenever I plan a trip. From the documentary this was one of the two places I was determined to visit on my Paso Robles trip and even when it got down to the last few days before I went on my trip I arranged my schedule as such so that I could visit the winery. On the day of my visit (9/6/2020) there were already two things going against me: COVID-related restrictions forced the tastings to be outdoors (among other restrictions), which in and of itself would not be an issue *but* that day was predicted to be the worst day of a weekend heat wave with temps to exceed 110F over the course of the day. But since I had a morning tasting luckily my reservation didn't get cancelled, plus there were fans blowing over the tasting area. The tasting experience is unlike anything I've ever encountered. To do a tasting has always been reservation-only even before COVID. You are first greeted to your space with your name on the tasting menu. Additionally it turns out that each group has their own personal sommelier who is with you the entire time and does a lot more than just pour the wine. Judy was an amazing hostess who made me feel at home AND talked to me about the tasting menu, which is a portfolio of their fall 2019 and spring 2020 releases. Because of her charm I still am able to retain a lot of information about the wines. The tasting menu is $40, which is comparable to Napa Valley in terms of tasting fees. It is waived by a 3-bottle purchase or a wine club membership, both of which are also steep. Turns out that they are a boutique winery with limited production on all the wines in their portfolio in part due to the manual labor used to make the wines. Some wines are produced only for their wine club, which is also intentional. THE TASTING - 2019 La Rose (46% Grenache, 28 Mourvèdre, 24% Cinsault & 2% Syrah) - 2019 Hommage Blanc (75% Roussanne & 25% Viognier) - 2018 Fleur de Solène (53% Syrah, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon & 20% Grenache) - their (unique and unusual!) take on a Bordeaux blend, inspired by Solène missing her Bordeaux blends. - 2018 Harmonie (70% Grenache, 16% Syrah & 14% Mourvèdre) - their take on a GSM blend, the "classical" Rhône blend and what Paso Robles in particular is known for. - 2018 Hommage à nos Pairs Reserve (95% Syrah, 3% Viognier & 2% Grenache) - their flagship wine according to owner/winemaker Guillaume. Dedicated to the father figures that made him who he is today. I learned two things about my wine preferences that day: 1) I'm still not quite liking Bordeaux blends and 2) I prefer wine that uses warm-weather Syrah grapes as opposed to grapes grown at a cooler temperature (outsourced from Santa Barbara county). The Hommage à nos Pairs Reserve really stood out to me and since Judy allowed me to taste Cuvée Jean, which is similar production only using the cooler-grown Syrah grapes, I could taste the contrast. The Hommage à nos Pairs is also unique in the sense that the grapes are co-fermented rather than blended in after [x] amount of months so there is greater risk in producing an inferior wine, though Guillaume does come from six generations of winemakers. I also liked the 2019 Hommage Blanc because as Judy likes to put it, "it's a red lover's white". I got it as a gift for the No1DP but I wouldn't mind getting another bottle for myself. Despite the heat and COVID affecting wine tasting throughout Paso I have found one of my most favorite wineries and my favorite tasting room experience in all my years of wine tasting. If I can find someone who can enjoy a nice bottle of wine with me I would sign up for Clos Solène's L'Expert tier in a heartbeat.

Honestly, you really haven't experienced wine, until you taste the red blends from Saxum. Like a fiend, I went straight for the waiting list only to find the wait is at least 4 years. I was patient, and unlike many, able to get an occasional bottle from my friend. They emailed me once a year to remind me to be patient, and mid 2025 I got my invite. I felt like I won the lottery. I was able to get a 23 G2 Vineyard and a 22 Rocket Block. I also have a 19 James Berry in reserve, but the problem is, I almost don't want to drink them. I feel like I would be consuming art. Ultimately, they are of course meant to be enjoyed and consumed. When you get a shipment, it comes with very thorough tasting notes and suggestions on drinking. I was able to buy two and select a wish list as well. Saxum is not exclusive for exclusive sake. It is exclusive because it is a small winery that can only produce so many barrels. You are limited in what you can purchase because they want to share their wines with as many people as possible. The wish list is only if they have enough left over. Saxum could seriously charge double or triple what they charge, but they don't. I think this says a lot about what they are as a winery and who they are as people. If you can get a hold of a bottle, you will look at wine differently. Four year waiting was worth it- all good things are.

My wife walked up to someone outside Linne Calodo and asked if they could squeeze in two people for a tasting. They said yes. Best unplanned decision of the trip. Here is where it gets good. There is a guy standing outside and I casually ask if he happens to be with the winery. Turns out it was Matt, the owner and winemaker himself. What followed was essentially a private masterclass: he walked us through the entire winemaking process, took us into the main fermentation and storage room, did proper pours, and spent real time talking about Paso Robles and his philosophy behind his wines and the blends. No rush, no clipboard, no tour-group energy. And then he let us blend with him. Actually blend. Walking from barrel to barrel, making our own concoctions, like we knew what we were doing, which we did not, but Matt made it feel like we did. Easily the best hour we spent in Paso Robles. And why small family run wineries beat the big conglomerates when it comes to authentic wine making and tasting experiences. Thank you Matt. Go here.
