Ugh! This place is either great or horrible! It was horrible this time. They sat us at the worst table again after we confirmed a reservation for a special occasion. The hostess was on the phone when we arrived. We weren't given the table we requested in our reservation but the absolute worst table that was broken and by the bathroom. She wasn't very apologetic. While home for the holidays my childhood best friend kidnapped me and took me to finally check out Cloak & Dagger. I was super excited to go because last year our plans fell through. Anyway, I loved the casual and relaxed vibe, it was moody with the lighting and decor, which I I also loved. Our server was so nice and dealt with my interrogation regarding their drinks, and which weren't sugar bombs. I was not disappointed with my choice. I had two of the Queen of Thorns cocktails, yes two, and I regret nothing. Strong, boozy, not sweet at all but so delicious. I also tried their Children of the North aka Pierogis - would absolutely recommend. This is a cocktail lounge, so their plates are small but Cloak & Dagger is perfect for drinks and ordering some small plates to feed the alcohol. The Writer's Room at Cloak & Dagger blew me away with its ambiance. It's a very sultry hideaway/speakeasy on the second floor of Cloak & Dagger. It happens to be CLE's first membership-only cocktail lounge. The space is dimly lit and sets the perfect mood for unwinding. You feel like you're a million miles away from everything in life, just enjoying cocktails, and chill music. There are three distinct themed rooms with different vibes from Viper with red lights and Jungle with leopards. Each room brings a different feel to the space. Interesting, complex cocktail menu with a selection of monthly specials and another of mainstays. I started with the Rabbit's Foot, which I saw later in a framed cut out from Cleveland Magazine. It's been noted in the local cocktail scene for a reason. Rich, yet refreshing - and beautiful! Each of us from our group of four had two cocktails so we covered good ground. The other two standouts were the Smaller Acts from the regular selection and the Dread Presence from the March menu. Smaller Acts is a lovely little dessert drink, and so good I might be reluctant to start with it because I would want many more. Dread Presence used coffee porter and was smoky, cozy and a little spicy. The other drinks we got were also solid, and the servers were friendly and attentive. This was one of my favorite spots that we visited in Cleveland. I hopped online and made a quick reservation while at another bar, and I'm so glad I did because it's a cozy space. The menu is a beautiful illustrated book, which I always appreciate as its own work of art. It definitely sets the stage for your experience, which is a bit theatrical with flamed rosemary and flourishes on your drink, but it's not over the top. Drinks here are thoughtfully crafted with ingredients you don't always see on cocktail menus, like mustard seed, roasted grapes and olives, and vegan goat cheese foam. The Her Highness cocktail was my favorite, with a bit of a smoky earthiness but also some fruit. They have drinks that can be made spirit-free, which I love. Canned beer, other NA options, and wine round out the drink selection. We ordered the tofu bao buns and popcorn with house seasoning - both were good, but the popcorn was amazing. I do recommend making reservations, as it is very hard to get a table when just walking in - so definitely be prepared and make that reservation! Both cocktails were great. Our dinner order was the French Dip and Celeriac Cacciatore on polenta. Both dishes were perfect and we would order again without hesitation. The Celeriac was slightly spicy and the polenta had a good texture. Whenever I come across celeriac I don't know how to prepare it. I may try this next time. My partner ordered the Ghost of Grandeur as his second cocktail because he liked mine so much. I ordered the Last of the Poppies spirit free. This time I enjoyed the Debts Paid a bourbon based drink with beet and red wine reduction and a goat cheese foam. The salty foam plus the sweet and sour drink was an excellent combo. A favorite of mine (tg it's on their standing legends menu) is the queen of thorns. It's gin based, with a spicy sweet and floral kick to it. So much fun to drink. You basically need a reservation here, wouldn't recommend trying to walk in. It's usually fine to get one a few days in advance, and sometimes day of it you don't mind a more off time. Food here is all vegan, and my favorites are always the french fries and the popcorn. Definitely get an order to split, the fries are a can't miss. Service is always exceptional, I've enjoyed the care each server gives when making recommendations. Oh also when you are seated you are greeted with a complimentary welcome shot, which is a great touch. Drinks right now are $15 each, so on the pricier side but absolutely worth the price. I mean we ended up at another bar after another bar and had a hard time sipping down the drink because these cocktails rocked so hard. Highly recommend you at least come for one, or four. They run about $15 but totally worth the mouth explosion! The food was average. I am not vegan but my husband is. He loved his food. I got the vegan gyro. I was a bit disappointed that it came on a hanger bun with lettuce and tomato. I was expecting more of a traditional food experience, maybe it was me but I wouldn't have called this sandwich a gyro. It was good but not what expected. Someone described the ambiance as "ambient and moody" and I think that perfectly sums it up. The cozy atmosphere is welcoming and a little mysterious. We arrived right at 4 when they opened, and although we didn't have a reservation, we were able to score a seat at the bar. (The hostess did tell us we had to leave at one point though, as she was expecting another reservation.) We ordered a couple drinks and even got a "welcome drink", which was a small sample of a holiday concoction that was fruity and sweet. The drinks were well-made and strong. I also didn't realize it was a vegan menu, but the small plates were actually pretty solid. I had the roasted beat carpaccio and meatloaf, which were both pretty good. I honestly had no idea what to expect out of vegan meatloaf, and while it wasn't exactly what I expected, it was fairly hardy and satisfying. My friend has some food allergies, but the kitchen was kind enough to whip her up a pasta dish with a red sauce. I tasted some of it, and it was excellent! This place has been on our list to try for a while now and I'm so glad we finally got here! We made a reservation for dinner on a Friday night. The place was moderately packed. They had a much larger patio space than I was expecting, but if it was not spring/summer - the amount of people they'd be able to accommodate would be slim. So would absolutely recommend making a reservation. We got a couple cocktails - I got the rabbits foot and I LOVED it. Don't know that I ever need to drink another cocktail. Then for dinner we got a couple apps (pickle platter, fries) and each got the Buffalo "chicken" sandwich. The food was all incredible, I was so impressed. The sauce that came with the fries was like a smoky ketchup and it was so unique and a nice change to such a standardized side. If you didn't know, everything on the menu is vegan - including anything they use in their drinks. My only recommendation to them would be getting a couple more items on the menu to eat. Unbelievably good cocktails. Probably the most creative in the entire city. All new menu every couple weeks or months too! Now they have unbelievably good vegan food too! The sweet juicy whiskey "chicken" skewers were not cheap at $14 for two, but were the best seitan strips I've ever had. Perfectly cooked and coated in a sweet barbecue sauce with nuts and a perfectly complementary kale and cabbage slaw. So delicious I couldn't believe it. The Gemini drinks came as two "twins" which were fantastically paired. The first had nutty roasty chocolate notes from the mole agave and chocolate bitters. The Twin II was a nice bright mango orange peppery little shot of goodness. The only downside here is that you require a reservation and it is dark as hell in there.
