Clive's menu may be a slight cut above the unifood oft served at TGIChilBees clones. Recently following a business appointment I found myself hungry and searching for a place to dine in this neck of the woods. Clive's, less than 1/2 mile away seemed to fit the bill. The extensive menu offers something for everyone. I was craving something hearty and filling on a cool, overcast day. The redundantly named chicken fried chicken was tailor made for such an occasion. It was a huge serving of a crisply breaded, flavorful chicken breast over garlic mashed potatoes covered in rich gravy and a side of julienned green beans and peppers. Health food? Not. But I've had such fare that was greasy and over-salted. This was neither. The house raspberry lemonade (one free refill) was a crisp, refreshing beverage to counter the weight of the dish. Service was prompt and cordial. Prices very good considering the quality and quantity. Clives is our birthday go-to destination. We order takeout very frequently and here's the best way to do it: go there, sit at the bar, order your food and a drink, enjoy some free popcorn, and your food will be out in about the time it takes to have one drink (or even faster). My parents brought me here since this is one of their go to places to eat. I ordered the stuffed meatloaf and it was so delicious! Talk about comfort food! In my opinion, Clive's is a solid 3 for dinner. My wife and my daughter visited for dinner for the first time, about a month ago, and both of them refuse to go back. The food was okay. But the orders were botched and they both got sick when they got home. Of course, it's impossible to prove that it's the fault of Clive's--maybe it was the food...maybe not. But I listened to both girls complain about Clive's for a couple of days. I actually talked my wife into going back tonight so I could try them out since they seem to be so popular. So it was my first visit and my wife's second (reluctant) visit. The food and the drinks were good. But I can't say they were elevated up to all the 4 & 5 stars I see on Yelp. Maybe Clive's is above average for the NW suburbs, which seems to mostly be a culinary wasteland. But in the context of the entire metro, they're just average. The service was very good. Our server was on top of everything. As a final note, Clive's was busy as hell on a Friday night. All chairs and tables, both inside and outside, were completely occupied and there was a line of people waiting for an open spot. So lots of people seem to love them. I went for the first time at 9 ish PM and the ambiance was perfect for night cravings. The staff were attentive and came to our table right away. The waiter answered all our questions (since we've never been there) and gave us recommendations. I finally got to stop in and see what all the locals were talking about. A nice restaurant located on the corner if 169N. On Sundays they have happy hour from 11am to close. I ordered the boneless buffalo wings and cheese curds off the happy hour menu. The cheese curds were overlooks and dry. I was disappointed I looooooove when the cheese is gooey. The boneless buffalo wings were huge! I ordered the traditional buffalo sauce BUT they came out with their bourbon which is pretty much BBQ. I was upset but didn't want to wait for a new batch. The BBQ was pretty good. I would totally order it again. Everyone talked about their chicken fried chicken so you know that's what I ordered. IT WAS THE BEST IVE EVER HAD!!!! The chicken was huge and very moist. It wasn't soggy due to the gravy but crispy & cooked just right. Served on top of garlic Mashed potatoes and vegetables on the side. It was perfect! My wife and I ait a Clive's Roadhouse. The interior is very nice and a bit old school. Kind of like a sports bar with all the Screens turned to various sports. The menu has a lot of items on it (almost to many). My wife had the Bang Bang Shrimp. The shrimp was well executed )basically an asian style dressed salad.) the dressing was decent, with TOO many water chestnuts. Was not impressed with the bread stick served with it. Tasted industrial and it was not even warmed up. Would have been better to serve with an egg roll or a hawiian style bread stick. I had the brisket special. It came with 2 slices of very fatty brisket that was slice WITH the grain (who slices brisket sliced with the grain?) The bark on it was good and flavorable. Came with baked beans that were very crunchy (i.e. undercooked). when I mentioned it to the waitress, she offered to have them heated or replace. She came back with a new bowl of beans and told me that the chef said he serves his beans al dente (being a chef myself I would say this is not a thing to do as it can be bad for a persons to eat under cooked beans). The new plate of beans were acceptably cooked and had good flavor. Also came with a piece of corn bread. Each component was very tasty, but a lot of sweet things on one plate; Could have used something to balance out the sweetness. It did come with a deviled egg half, Would have been a good opportunity to add some balance, but lacked the correct flavor, Overall the $19.99 special was worth about $12.00 in my opinion. Flavors good, but unbalanced, and execution was lacking. NEVER SERVE UNDERCOOKED beans Al dente beans are not a thing. Service was just okay. I absolutely love Clive's. Their happy hour is amazing along with their food. It's always fun and the service is usually very fast. We do To-go a lot more now and it's as if we actually went there. Rarely have I had a bad experience here. The only complaint I would have is that the mixed drinks taste like 90% alcohol and 10% mix. You really have to gag it down.
