i am a 2012 customer of clear. i am charged month to month, rather than a contract. at each forum of clear customers you will read multiple complaints of slow and unreliable service, which, i too, have experienced despite the fact that i am within sight of a clear transmitter tower. the explanation given by the clear tech is that it is due "tower congestion", whatever that is, and there seems to be no fix for this condition. poor maintenance or oversubscription of the service is the most likely cause. as a new customer clear will enable your device thru its unique mac address number.. if you buy your device on ebay they will not enable your device since you were not the original owner. they do this to force you to buy a new device from them or an authorized dealer. the devices they sell are based on old, 10 year old technology of 100 mbps connection, rather than the current gigabit 1000 mbps connection that current computers and routers use. although 100 mbps is probably ok for most home use, the 100 mbps clear router will be the bottleneck for your other network components if they are 1000 mbps.. true, it wont matter to most people but i think it odd that clear does not post specifications of its products on the website. and forget wireless "n" . again, clear is years behind on wireless standards.. and dont expect the phone rep, or even the store reps to know any specifications, they are clueless about wireless or network basics... clear reps are sales people, not technical people, even their technical people are not technical......as reported by other reviewers, i too, was lied to by clear reps on more than one occasion... when you first call clear to order a device and service they will ask you how many computers you have and what you download... tell them it is none of their business... decide what device you want before you call and stick to that, they are listed on the website.. as for bandwidth, there are two offered, 1.5 mbs for $35 and 6 mbs for $50.. the $50 a month service does not mean you will have better service than the $35 service...when the $50 service has trouble so does the $35 level... FYI, the $35 level will probably be a lot faster than 1.5 mb and you can always call anytime and upgrade your level to the $50 service on the fly, so you might start off with the lower bandwidth and see if that suits your needs... the phone rep will want your zip code to verify coverage in your area which is silly if you are getting a portable device that you will take with you down the interstate to connect with...again, it shows how stupid and limited their thinking is... i wanted a usb portable device so i could connect while i was on my boat at the lake but the rep would not sell to me bec his coverage map did not show service at my shipping address... if you get one of the dingbat reps just hang up and dial again.... thats why its important to predetermine which device you want and which bandwidth, and stick to it ... the rep will ask a lot of personal questions but you have to tell them unless they are offering to provide you with continuing tech support that your computer inventory and download habits are off limits to them.. after all, the person you are talking with is a sales person, not a person with any technical training.. in fact, you know more about computers than they do... these are not even americans and have never seen or held these devices in their hand... these are all in foreign phone centers, no matter if you call for billing, new account, or tech support you will be calling clear in a foreign country. and a word about your account......you are supposed to view your account at clear.com....if you make a payment, either by credit card or by cash at a clear dealer, your payment will not appear on your account until 31 days later... fishy ??? i think so, too. if you close your account or have a pause in payment you will loose your ability to log on to your account....if you had a credit balance on your account that will be lost, not only that , the phone rep will not see that you had a credit balance bec your account will be zeroed out. see a rebate or reward card offer for clear? it might be ok for you but my phone rep could not see that side of the clear operation... and the reward people only communicate by email...when they wanted to...no phone contact....and surprise, when your account is closed, so is your contact with the reward people.
over time i grew to dislike the clear policies more than the clear phone reps, and to dislike the clear phone people more than the clear service. and i let others to speak for the clear service. if you deal with clear you must lower your expectations. other people will have different opinions about clear because their experience is different. i can only tell you about my experience. read more
