We love the Clay Oven. The place is not the fanciest (it's in a strip mall), but the food is YUMMY & the service is FABULOUS. Although we enjoy the price and options available on the buffet, the food is not always as hot or fresh as we would enjoy (3-star buffet). When we have ordered from the menu, however, we are always satisfied (5-star). The food is hot & delicious. I have Chicken Tikka & samosa cravings on a regular basis. We bring our kids (ages 5 &7) here all the time. The food is mediocre. It's not bad and it's not good. The dining room leaves a lot to be desired. The staff is very nice and I wish it was better food because they deserve it. The raita (yogurt sauce) is very watered down and the naan (bread) is far from the best out there. If you want Indian food, head to Bethesda or DC. We won't return to Clay Oven. read more

It's been a while since I have last been here but the experience is always great. I love Indian cuisine and when I moved from Washington state I had hoped to find somewhere that was comparable to my usual joint there in both quality of service and food. I found it here. The customer service has been top notch and the food is awesome! I had the opportunity of meeting the owner and he is a great guy. I have not had the chance to try the buffet but hope to in the near future. The ambiance of the restaurant is comfortable and would be a good place to sit down with friends or family for a nice evening meal. I highly recommend Clay Oven if you like Indian cuisine. I have only had the buffet here, but it is very good. If you're like me and you love Indian food but can't handle too much heat, this is a perfect lunch spot for you. Clay Oven has very good Indian food. I have been going here for years. I miss the booths that they removed by the window, but that's okay. I am not there for seating, but instead their wonderful Indian cuisine. They have a lovely buffet and my favorite is the Chicken Masala or Butter Chicken. Overall they do a nice job. Just finished our take out order. We had paneer pakora, mulligatawny soup, vegetable samosas, shrimp biryani and tandoori chicken. All was good and very flavorful. We have been to the Clay Oven twice. The food is excellent and includes some great veggie and lentil options. It is also one of the few buffets that has four different meat options for carnivores, even on weekdays, and at one of our two visits had beef curry, a real treat. The service could be better and more attentive however. Dirty plates have been left on our table for long periods of time, and like some other restaurants there seems to be a concern about additional paper napkins, which must cost a penny apiece at that, but which are given out with great reluctance. Parking has never been a problem and the quality of the food makes it well worth a visit, especially for the modest prices. But the service could be friendlier and more customer oriented. Another waiter or two would probably help, especially on weekends. read more

This place is right down the street from me and I love it. I go there about twice a month for the lunch buffet. It's pretty cheap, and the food is very tasty. They always have a few meat items and a few vegetable items to choose from. The naan is delicious when it's just been made. I've had better Indian food (in Baltimore), but definitely never in this price range. The buffet doesn't have much for desert, at least nothing I like. When I brought my two year old son in, he ate for free at the buffet, but he's two and there were very few things mild enough for him to like. read more

I was driving back to Washington, DC and had been craving Indian food for over a week. I did a yelp search and found great reviews on the Clay Oven so I decided to stop there. The location was easy to get to and don't let it fool you (like another review said) that it is in a strip mall. It was excellent. we got there around 8:30 pm on a Wednesday night and were the only ones in there. The gentlemen that told us to sit anywhere and came up and asked if we had ever had Indian food before and if we had any questions. I asked about the chicken vindaloo and if I could get it, just not as spicy. He assured me that they could do a medium level of spice. I was cautious, but optimistic. My boyfriend ordered a new dish and had some questions about that as well which were throughly answered. Our dinners and naan's came out in a timely manner and they were awesome. The food was great. The employees there were very friendly and helpful. the bill was around $35 for the both of us (without tip). I had a soda and he had a new marsala tea (which was great). We each had a dinner and we each had an order of naan. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Especially those that are scared of Indian food because they just don't know enough about. Never heard of Clay Oven until it showed up on Yelp. As a first time patron, I couldn't have been more pleased. We did delivery on a Friday evening when was just too darn tired to even think about going out. The food was delivered in a timely manner by a very polite young man. It arrived warm and delicious. This was the first time using Clay Oven, but it will not be the last. Being of Indian origin and very familiar with Indian cuisine, I was a bit wary of an Indian restaurant tucked away in a little strip mall in out-of-the-way Frederick, Maryland. I was blown away! The Rogan Josh (lamb) was to die for. The Murgh Tikka Makhani (butter chicken) was excellent. Now granted, I have better Indian food in pricier restaurants in better venues, but there is absolutely no reason to drive down to DC or wherever if you're looking for Indian food in the greater Frederick area. For the price -- party of three; three dishes plus naan plus beer, no dessert -- we walked out with full bellies paying $25/person that included a fat tip; there are few places that can match. I noticed several reviews did not care for their buffet. I cannot comment because I have only gone to the Clay Oven for weekend dinners. However, I have been going there consistently for five years now, and I have every intention to continue! The Nepali owner is a nice guy. As a regular customer, I have not held back when a dish has been served poor. They have been quick to correct -- sometimes striking the offending dish from the tab or serving something complimentary. Mind you, this has been rare -- perhaps twice during all the time I have been going there. Over the years, they have changed cooks a few times, and I have noticed some variation. Ok, most of the positive review rave about the naan. Naan is, by nature, awesome. And others say that Clay Oven has the best indian food in Frederick, which isn't hard, since as far as I know it's the only indian food in Frederick. But this was BY FAR the worst indian food I've ever had. Even from a box. I will say the chicken samosa appetizer was decent, but the rest was almost inedible. I got the vegetable biryani, and I don't know if the vegetables used were frozen or from a can (standard vegi medley- too bright, oversoft carrots, yellow spongy cauliflower, mushy peas, and stringy olive-green green beans), but they were certainly not "fresh", as the menu claimed. My boyfriend got lamb vindaloo, which consisted of meat chunks floating in a sauce heavily based on canned tomato paste with something spicy thrown in. I know what tomato paste tastes like, and this was it. Most vindaloos don't even have tomatoes, I know that some northern Indian ones do, but vindaloo should not be primarily tomato paste. Save your money, this was an overpriced frozen indian dinner. If that's what you want, I'd suggest some of the ones from Trader Joe's. Oh, and TJ's frozen naan is also awesome. read more
