This is the second time I've ordered delivery from this gem of a restaurant, and I wasn't disappointed. The lamb biryani was excellent, as was the cauliflower and potato dish (forgot name). My fiancé and I felt like eating indian food for a late night take out dinner and we found this place. We called the restaurant to order, but were told that they had already closed. The man who answered thought about it for a second and graciously said that if we could make it there in 15 minutes, we could order. We ordered the chicken curry, chicken tikka and garlic naan. It was all very delicious! I wish the vegetables that came with the chicken tikka were cooked down a bit, but it was still very good! Easily my favorite restaurant in Frederick. I order delivery from them at least once a month. I've loved everything I've ordered, every single time. Their vegetable korma is great and so is the lamb vindaloo. All their appetizers are yummy and they come with a cilantro jalapeño chutney and a tamarind sauce. I became very disappointed today when i visited this restaurant. I do not know if they have a new cook or if they have to change the taste to satisfy the desire of some Americans to eat Indian food when it does not taste near close to Indian. I ordered the buffet and a Taj Majal beer (wonder if that really comes from India but I am going to check the label next time). Well, the food taste okay but not Indian. I do not pretend that they are going to cook/spice the food like Indians do with some dishes: it might be too hot. But, hey, there is some heat to it. When I got the curry chicken and beef it is like I was eaten my Puerto Rican beef and chicken stew (and we do not eat spicy at all). I do not think that I am going to go back there. I paid $20.00 to taste chicken and beef that taste like the one of my island in Puerto Rico. I do not go to an Indian restaurant to eat food that resemble Puerto Rico; I go to an Indian restaurant to taste food that will taste Indian, or if not, it will taste exotic enough to make me think that I am eating authentic Indian food. In my opinion, more curry, turmeric, grand masala and cinnamon without discouraging Americans to go to their place because their tongues/months are going to get burned (at least the sensation) by the heat. read more

I just don't know how you can call this Indian food. Very little flavor. We've gone a few times, for dinner (first time, we ordered the variety platter for two so we could try everything) as well as for the lunch buffet. I kept giving it another try just because I love Indian food so much, but now that I've found Kabob and Curry, I never have to be subjected to Clay Oven disappointment again! I heard that the owner is actually Nepalese....I think they should stop billing the restaurant as "Indian" and create a niche for Nepalese food instead, to manage Indian-food-lovers' expectations. read more

Go for lunch buffet: there are so many tasty options! When I lived closer, I used go there every time I had a day off for their buffet: it lasted me a lunch and a snack! Lots of veggie options (not sure how many are vegan). Still crave their food and make a drive every once in a while. read more

Well I made the mistake of going to this place first for the buffet, instead of a la carte and I am afraid that this might tarnish my view of the clay oven. To start with the place is pretty dingy, but then thats par for the course for most Indian restaurants. The menu its self is pretty standard Indian fare. I didn't see anything that eye opening therefore I elected to have the buffet. Now I have to say that the buffet itself was pretty substantative but it should be said that they raise the prices for the weekend bufffet so I am assuming that there is not as much on offer during the week. The problem with the buffet however is the standard one accross the board when it comes to buffets, which is keeping the food warm and in a presentable manner...or not as the case was in todays trip. The curries were luke warm, ditto the rice and pretty much everything else. The naan bread was soggy and the gulab jamun (I probably butchered that spelling) was served cold. As soon as I returned to my table with the food I had to inhale it as there is nothing worse than a cold curry. 2/5 on the bunnymeter read more

We love Clay Oven. Even my picky 4 year old loves clay oven. The owners are very nice and enjoy chatting with us when we come in. My husband is more daring and orders the not so common dishes, but I always go with the Tikki Makhani and it is heavenly every time. Their lunch buffet is also wonderful with a great selection with fresh dishes. They definitely do not taste like they were recycled from yesterday's lunch buffet. read more

I think I've eaten inside this place a few years ago, but these days, we order delivery. And we order delivery from them a fair bit. I get the chicken makhani regularly, and it's creamy, spicy, delicious. Husband is a huge fan of the biryani, especially the goat biryani, which is out of this world. And he routinely craves the rice pudding for reasons that are mysterious to me, but it is fantastic rice pudding. On Eat24, delivery is free if you order over $25 of food, and frankly, you get enough for dinner and lunch the next day. At about $11-15 an entrée, that's not a bad deal. And outside of super slammed delivery days (ie, snow days, because apparently, the drivers don't drive in the weather so people think that's a reasonable alternative to cooking during bad weather), we get dinner within an hour. So if you want Indian food but don't want to step away from the Netflix to put on pants, Clay Oven is your best bet. Now I'm going to return to my Netflix and chicken makhani. read more

The buffet was so-so. The service was fine. The pakoras were stale and cold, even after I saw them put "new" ones out. Walking back from the bathroom I saw a bus bin full of them. This was a great find. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious. The servers seemed more affronted that my drink was empty than I was, and were very polite and attentive. No fewer than 3 members of the staff checked on us multiple times to make sure everything was good. I have never dined in the restaurant, but I order delivery from Clay Oven every once in a while. I have never had a bad meal from them. I typically get the vegetarian combo. It comes with three "entrees", naan, rice, and a sample of appetizers. The flavor has always been spot on...just spicy enough. The food always arrives hot, not sure how they do that with delivery. Very good food and very good service. They'll help you pick something out if you're not sure what to get, and they're very good about checking in at your table to make sure everything's alright. The lunch buffet has a nice variety, and everything I've had on their dinner menu has been quite good. The only time I wasn't wowed by my meal, I had the leftovers the next day and from sitting overnight they ended up being really flavorful and delicious, so I consider that a win. Restaurant was recommend to me by a friend figured I check it out I order the Chicken Biryani at the recommendation of my friend according to the menu chicken, basmati rice, saffron, raisins and cashews. Mind you my friend was going to pick up the order since I longer drive because of a disability. When the order arrived I was looking forward to eating me meal let's just say it didn't turn out that way at all. First bite I took of the chicken Biryani I quickly spit it out there my mouth was on fire there was so much curry in the dish that it was unbearable to eat. I immediately called my friend who's Indian he stated that the dish is not made with curry. That in fact if the dish was made with curry it should have been clearly stated in their menu with little chili icons specifying the spiciness of the dish. I called restaurant to speak to the manager a young woman answered phone explained to her my situation she placed me on hold, then the manager picked up. I respectfully explained to him my issue at this moment he asked if I were able to come in with the dish would gladly make me a fresh one for me for a charge of $12.95, I was left puzzled with what I had heard. I asked him to repeat what he said to be clear on what I had just heard and sure enough he was going to charge me for the making of a fresh dish. I explained to the manger that I no longer drove he said to me that if I were to bring the dish in he would make on fresh for a charge. At this point I am frustrated I politely asked if he could have a fresh dish delivered to my residence he stated he had no driver's but that I could come in with the dish they would make me a new one for a recharge. I finally told the manager what part of I no longer drive did he not get then he had the audacity to ask why I did not tip really, since when do you tip on a take out order on top of that on a dish that taste like I was eating straight up nothing but curry. The conversation ended with the manager once again asking for me to bring dish make a fresh one for a charge. Never will I order or even dine at this establishment my first experience was my last ruined by the lack of customer service description of dish according to their menu or the proper preparation. read more

What a terrible experience! I tried this restaurant for lunch after I saw it and purchased a coupon from restaurant.com. The service was horrific! We had to ask for a menu that took the waiter over 5 minutes to bring to the table. We ordered drinks that took even longer... After reviewing the menu, we decided to have the buffet. The food overall was just as horrific, unfortunately the highlight was the naan. We asked two different waiters for an extra napkins and never did get any. When we paid, we presented the "restaurant" coupon and the waiter brought back the coupon and said it was for dinner only. When I pointed out the coupon said "dine-in only" he came back to the table and said it was not valid for the buffet. After an argument about not specifying anything on the coupon about not including the buffet on the coupon, we paid and left...never to return again. Even if they honored the coupon, we still would not have returned to this restaurant. Avoid the restaurant at all cost! read more
