Two meals at Claro, two amazing experiences. The first time we dined in, we had no idea it was an esteemed restaurant. We were grocery shopping nearby and wanted an early dinner so we stopped in. The menu sounded creative and delicious so we were excited to order and it was really hard to choose!
We decided on the aguachile which came with fluke that day, as well as the pork cheeks, tuna tostada, and tostadas with salsa and guacamole. Everything was bursting with a symphony of flavors that we just did not see coming. The food here is straightforward but complex and the quality of the ingredients is unmatched. The aguachile has an addictive, tingly spice that leaves you wanting more, and the fluke was so fresh and delicious. The quality of the tuna was also insane. The fish glistened like rubies on top of that handmade tostada, with supremes of seasonal citrus and crispy chicharrones. The mole could make you cry. Someone's grandma somewhere is missing a treasured recipe haha! The pork cheeks themselves are fall-apart, melt-in-your-mouth tender and pair perfectly with the tangy dressed bitter greens and sweet pear. I didn't stop thinking about this meal until we could afford to go back and eat there again!
Last week we stopped in for their pre-fixe brunch which is $48/pp and comes with 3 courses. Now, we did not expect to get full sized portions. We were not mentally prepared. But we GOT PREPARED because there's no way any of this food will go to waste. The portions are INCREDIBLY generous for a 3 course pre-fixe and I feel we got an amazing value. I ordered the pork cheek mole again, because, how could I not? It was just as perfect as I remembered. I also had the aguachile again, which came with scallops this time. There wasn't much scallop in there, and I preferred the fluke, however the sweetness of the scallop was delicious. I just wish there were either larger pieces or more scallop in general. It's not a huge complaint, because we got a TON of food, but I think if I ordered it a la carte I'd want more. But again, the taste was perfect. Consistency isn't a problem here. My partner had the tuna tostada (again, it was gorgeous and perfect in every way) and the chilaquiles. Delicious! Perfectly cooked eggs. We also ordered several cocktails which were all made quickly and efficiently by the talented and busy bartender who was also our server, as well as an a la carte dish, the octopus tostada. This was the only thing that wasn't a home-run for me but it was still good. My favorite cocktail had coconut, green chartreuse, and mezcal. I forget the name but it was smoky, sweet, bright and grassy with a smooth coconutty finish. Delish!
The desserts were also INSANE! Desserts are usually an afterthought, even in Michelin starred places, but not here. Traditional Mexican sweets, made the Claro way. The churros were clearly made with their masa, soft and almost creamy inside, perfectly crispy on the outside, and paired well with the caramel sauce. My partner wished for chocolate sauce, but I was very happy with the caramel. The arroz con leche will haunt my dreams forever. It's one of my favorite things and their version is rich, decadent, and elevated. Topped with roasted pineapple, it's a satisfying and well balanced dessert that's not too sweet! Go for it if you don't have the biggest sweet tooth.
The bartender also gave us a limited edition chocolate bar when we left. It was incredible. Thank you Claro team for some of the most refreshing and delicious food we've had in a while!
