I came here for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. It's a small restaurant so reservations are probably needed. The artwork of the restaurant is-- interesting. Not my style. But the food was. It was AMAZING. I had the Taco Placero and Mole Rojo de Pato. Could not recommend it more although a bit expensive. The drinks were fine, the mezcal flight we had was a bit hard to finish, not smooth at all. Anyways I'd definitely recommend the food.
The entrees are excellent. I came here with a large party so I got to see/try many of the dishes and there is a high cuisine to their take on classical Mexican fare. The fish tacos were probably the best I've ever had. Also I highly recommend the swordfish. The drinks and the wine list are very good. Where they lose a star, unfortunately, are the starters. The guacamole, the mole, the salsa were all underwhelming. Uncreative small portions that left everyone unsatisfied.
If you're looking for an authentic Oaxacan restaurant - this is it. We came for brunch which I think was a mistake since a lot of the food we wanted to try was available for dinner - but nonetheless, it was still a lovely experience. Our waitress was super warm and attentive and the ambience was really festive and made us feel like we had stepped out of BK and into Mexico for an hour or so. Our pancakes were super hearty and fluffy. My mushroom and egg breakfast dish, (that I can't remember the name) was alright but nothing crazy. Def will be returning for dinner soon and can't wait to try the goat tacos on the menu!
Cannot get enough of Claro! The food is fresh, delicious, and thoughtfully made. I LOVE how the chef changes the menu seasonally and that all the food is gluten free. Drinks are delicious and they have the largest Mezcal selection I've seen anywhere. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I come back every time I'm in New York!
It's a 4 course dinner for $80 (now inflated to $90), but u can always order a la carte instead. - - - - - - - - - - ~ Mulita de Esquites (4/5) ~ [sweet corn, bacon, chintextle, uni] It's an interesting flavour combination and it works! You won't get the uni from every bite, but when you do it adds a really nice umami flavour. ~ Aguachile de Tomate $25 (4/5) ~ [Montauk fluke, fire-roasted tomato, husk cherries, charred habanero] This is quite spicy but I like it! Fluke typically have a light & mild flavour, so it pairs really well with strong flavours. ~ Tostada de Atun $22 (4.5/5) ~ [yellowfin tuna, chili crisp Oaxaqueno, eggplant-mayonesa, chicharron] Tuna is fresh, paired w/ refreshing cucumber, red onion & delicious fried pork rind that adds great texture & flavour! ~ Mole Negro $28 (3.5/5) ~ [short rib, spring onion] The meat is tender & juicy, the Mole Negro sauce is savoury sweet but it's overly sweet for my taste. ~ Tuetano de Mole Negro (3/5) ~ [bone marrow, bitter salad, tortilla 1oz Pechuga] Slightly disappointed, the bone marrow is quite small & don't really have a lot of marrow. It's covered by the overly sweet mole negro sauce that overpowers the bone marrow. Came with a shot of mezcal. ~ Plato de Barbacoa (5/5) ~ [Heritage goat, guajillo Mexicano, consomme] This might be my favourite dish of the night, apart from the churros! The heritage goat is so flavourful without gamey taste, meat is tender & juicy, I love the way they season/flavour the meat! ~ Churros $10 (5/5) ~ OMG I LOVE THIS CHURROS!! Perfectly golden crispy crust with a soft inside, and I tasted corn flour! Kinda like a cornflour taco churros! This taste is so unique I'm OBSESSED! So coming back for this treat!! ~ Chocolate Mole Cake $12 (1/5) ~ Could be down to personal taste, but we hated this. It's too sweet & there is a soury taste. It's also quite floury & lumpy. Maybe this is what a typical Mexican choc mole cake tastes like? It's my first so I wouldn't know. - - - - - - - - - - Overall Rating: 4.5/5 Will I be back? Yes! Enjoyed most of the dishes and experienced some new flavours. Recommend!
Good but I'm not pining to return. Aguachile was fresh but SUPER spicy for me (I can handle some spice usually, and my partner is really good with spice and we both struggled). Shrimp quesadilla was my favorite. The moles were yummy, I preferred the emolada. I really did not enjoy the NA beverages. Specifically we got a matcha horchata and it mostly tasted like almond milk.
I could wax poetic about how Claro represents all that is right with Mexican fine dining, but I have a headache and it's too hot and tomorrow is a school night, so TL;DR: This place deserves the hype and you should go. - Aquachile de Fresa: Actually spicy. Enjoyably spicy. Authentically spicy. Loaded with fresh strawberries, though they tended to overwhelm the other flavors a bit. - Tostada de Atún: Gorgeous, fresh, loaded with plenty of tuna. The kind of dish I think of when I fantasize about Mexican seafood. And I fantasize about that quite a bit. - Mela de María Sabina: If you're a mushroom lover, this shroom bomb over perfectly made, fluffy tortilla will have you sobbing with joy. - Tacos de Tinga: Turkey is the meat base you never knew would make perfect tacos. And now the secret is out, thanks to Claro. Your mouth will positively tinga-le (haha) for these. - Mole Verde: Bright, citrusy and full of well-seared fish and well-grilled veggies. Delightful. - Mole Rojo: Smokey, slightly sweet, but with a roasted quail that melts in your mouth. - Chocolate Mole Cake: Lava cake, this is not, so don't dismiss it as such. This is light the solid, fluffy form of a perfectly spiced Mexican hot chocolate. I am awarding it the highest compliment an Asian person can give for a dessert: "Not too sweet". - Tamales Dulces: Sweet tamales. What a concept! Like the sweet zongzi I grew up with, but with corn! This was flavorful and unique. Just get it. We added some Frijoles Oaxaqueños to our meal, but we shouldn't have, as the portion was huge (not complaining) and a bit salty after a while. Wish it had come served with rice. For imbibing, we opted for alcohol-free and got the Hibiscus Allspice Agua Fresca, which was fantastic, and the Monstruo de Agua, which was bland and flavorless. Easily one of the Top 10 meals I've had this year.
We had a reservation for Saturday lunch at noon, and parking was still not an issue to find around the area. 2 of us shared: The chilaquiles rojos: they recommended this, and it was indeed delicious. It's like mole painted on each nacho chip, and I'd get this again. It is a bit on the sweet side given the mole. The mulita de camote was excellent, and perhaps my favorite thing to eat. The trout roe and the rest of it paired nicely together. The masa pancakes were quite filling, and you can easily share this with 3-4 people. It comes in 3, and the texture was more spongy than a normal pancake, but we appreciate the flavor profile. The pumpkin flan was more of a pumpkin pie puree, so while it tasted fine, it didn't have the custard texture/flavor that I look for in flan. We also got the seasonal agua fresca (hibiscus + allspice, delicious) and the passionfruit 'chinampa' (described as like a Mexican kombucha), which was dry to my relief. If I could do this again, I'd probably get less sweet items to balance out the flavors more, but this was a very affordable lunch for a formerly Michelin start restaurant.
This was my first time at Claro and wow what an amazing experience! All the dishes were incredibly delicious and well thought out. Our server was extremely attentive and the food came out in a timely manner. The restaurant itself is really cute and intimate, perfect for a date night! Some dishes that stood out to me were the ribeye steak special that our waiter gushed about. Even though it was an add on of 24$ it was well worth it. The steak was cooked to perfection on their backyard grill and was by far one of the best steaks I've had recently. The tequila ice cream is also a must try. It's this sweet and citrusy ice cream with perfect hints of tequila that I couldn't get enough of. Will definitely be coming back! Highly recommend!
I live right down. The street, finally stopped in with some friends on a Monday evening. Evening. Wonderful service! Four course tasting menu for about $90, with a drink tax and tip came out to be about 120 per person. We have three of us and all tried pretty much everything on the menu. Best thing on the appetizer was the tostada de atun - crispy, tuna was so fresh , the mix of citrus , honestly, this might have been my favorite dish. Highlights of the next course was the bone marrow. Slightly burnt, so rich you can feel it clogging your arteries, but worth the heart attack. Next course I was torn between the mole rojo- the pork cheeks also so rich- and the emoladas negras. The duck and the sauce was rich and heavy and filling, but you can't help but let up all the sauce. Dessert we tried the churros, mole cake, helado de mezcal. Honestly the churros take the cake. So crispy, hot, fresh, perfect way to end the meal. The helado was very refreshing and had a nice kick to balance the heaviness of the mole cake which was also just so decadent. Will be back to try brunch at some point. But if you're in gowanus, hard to turn down a one Michelin star restaurant with incredible food and service, just the richness of it all. And it's not that hard to get the table. What are you waiting for? Very reasonable prices too, definitely get the tostada de atun, bone marrow, and churros!
Had a perfect Mexican meal in this restaurant. Don't be cheated by the surroundings of it, the restaurant was actually very well-decorated. The inside had shelves of antique dining ware collections. The outside was decorated by all kinds of plants and flowers. They serve dinner as well as weekend brunch. I tried their dinner which was four-course prix fixe. Everything was pretty satisfactory and unforgettable. As soon as I got the menu, my server greeted me warmly and explained the menu for me. They made some changes to the menu, so this was quite helpful to me. Several minutes after I ordered the food, I found myself enjoying the first dish - aguachile served with toasted tortilla. It was my first time to have it so my server briefly taught me how to eat it. The interesting part of this dish was its mix of fruit and veg, which paired surprisingly well with the fish. It's said that it was not as spicy as their aguachile before. Before the second dish, someone helped me clean the table. This was very thoughtful as the crispy tortilla in the first dish made my table a little dirty. Anyway, the second dish was garnachas, basically small corn dough topped with meat cheese and veg. The meat was super juicy and flavorful and went well with the crispy veg. Just hope that the serving size could be larger. I got the Mole Verde for my third dish. The fish was red snapper, a small piece but cooked just right and full of flavor. The mole verde was lighter than e.g., mole negro, and had a slight sour taste. The side broccolini also tasted fresh. For dessert I chose mole chocolate cake. It was topped with large amount of cream. The cake itself had a dense, moisture texture which was nothing like the fluffy cakes you gt in most shops. Besides, it was bitter and had a special smell (perhaps due to the mole). I did not have the cream, but enjoyed the cake a lot! After the meal my server gave me a large bar of dark chocolate (70% chocolate, 30% sugar) made by a company cooperated with Claro. He explained how special it was but I forgot about it now lol. It tasted a little bitter and sour (the sourness might came from the long fermentation during the production process), which was also interesting. So overall the 1.5-hour dining experience was fantastic and pleasant, the food was authentic and delicious. The price ($80) was also reasonable. Next time I will go there with my friends as well haha! Maybe try their brunch prix fixe next time.
Came here for dinner before the Moth show at Bell House. We were able to snag a 5:30 reservation a couple days before the show which was convenient. My friend and I both opted for the tasting menu. For the tasting menu you get to select one dish from each of the four sections of the menu. I left stuffed! The flavors in all the dishes were great and felt authentically Mexican. I went with the mezcal pairing was well and enjoyed sipping from four very different pours throughout the meal. The place is super cute with tons of pottery decorating shelves on the wall. The place had filled in by the time we left. I would definitely return and suggest it to others.
Good food and a decent price for a Michelin, but didn't feel as mind blowing as many other Michelin spots in the city. If you're in the area anyways, I'd suggest making a res but not sure I'd go out of my way for it. My friends suggested Casa Enrique over this spot. There's a 4 course prix fixe, serving 3 dishes that are all quite large (and nearly entree size) along with one dessert. Ended up being around $100-105 per person and was very filling. My favourite by far was the dessert which was such a nice contrast of textures and flavors but will get to that below.. Tostada de Pulpo (2/5): Octopus is amazing - so soft, tender and flavorful. The sauce tasted like far too strong bbq sauce and a bit too sour. There was just a bit too much sauce which overwhelmed the flavor of the dish and made it difficult to enjoy the octopus. I could see this being better with a different sauce. Tostada de Atun (4/5): My partner ordered this instead of the octopus. I'd get this next time. Fish was fresh and there was minimal sauce. Had a nice chunk of avocado on top which was refreshing. Dish wasn't particularly exciting / innovative though. Tacos de Barbacoa (5/5): Simple but amazing. Meat was soft and flavorful. Had fresh crisp bits of onion on top. Meat basically melts in your mouth. Mole Negro (4/5): Chunk of short rib with a nice mild and smooth sauce. Short rib was soft but not too fatty (no big fat pieces anywhere). Had a few potatoes throughout which provided a nice break from the meat. Onion was a long green onion-type decoration that was very difficult to cut (I didn't succeed and just ended up leaving it). Arroz con Leche (5/5): MY FAVOURITE. Wasn't too sweet. Rice was soft melded well with the creamy sweet soup/jelly/sauce(?). There was a piece of poached quince which was a bit chewy and provided nice contrast. The bit of sweetness from the quince really brought out the other flavors (cinnamon, etc.) from the dish.
True rating experience 3.5 If there was no issue, my rating would be a solid 4. What drew us here was the Michelin star rating. We had to try after reading all the reviews and buzz about this place. Food was delicious. Ambience was fantastic. Decor was filled with whimsical artwork. I appreciated the many different art pieces displayed on the shelves and throughout the restaurant. Service was off to a great start. Our drinks and appetizers were served fairly quickly. We enjoyed the tasting menu options. The tostadas tasted fresh and full of flavor. Then, we waited. No check ins with our waiter. We saw that he was helping other tables but didn't check in with us. We patiently waited for someone to let us know if the kitchen was behind or if our food was on its way. We waited. We then politely asked if someone could help check our order. The manager came over to apologize for the delay and offered a drink as we waited for our entrees. Finally, after an hour of waiting our entrees came out. Kids were excited. We enjoyed the short ribs, dumplings and pancakes. The dessert was the true highlight of our meal. Churros, cake and rice pudding were spectacular. The manager took a % off the bill and the waiter did come over and apologized for the unexpected and long wait during service. Overall, the meal was good. The flavors hit all the senses. The hour long wait in between courses was unfortunate. read more

Claro serves Oaxacan food and mezcal. I came for their four course dinner ($72) and got to try a variety of unique and filling tostadas. Some standouts were: - TOSTADA DE REMOLACHA (beets) - GARNACHAS (venison) - MOLE NEGRO (duck) They also have a backyard which would be great to dine in. 3.2 to be exact. Came for their 3 course brunch menu. The Mulita de esquites was quite good, then everything followed started to go downhill. The beef short rib was sooo heavy that both of us couldn't finish it. Both entrees had very minimal protein, especially the memela de chorizo y papas. The chocolate mole cake was heavy in spice that wasn't my cup of tea. We're full but from all the carbs we consumed. Service was very slow. Average wait time in between courses was about 20 min. If you're in a hurry, this may not be a good choice. read more
Claro que claro is wonderful. We had such a great tasting meal. The table, which was very spacious and in the front window was quiet and sunny with lots of room for all the dishes we ordered. We started with the tostadas y salsas which featured four different accompaniments - a great fresh guacamole, a red salsa, a green salsa and some pickled veggies. The tostadas were really crispy and tasty and there was plenty of everything. I followed our server's advice on what were his favorite dishes and he did not steer me wrong. The aguachile was l everyone's favorite of the evening. It was refreshing and spicy at the same time. The tostada de atun was also delicious with lots of fish piled on top. The mulita de camote was as tasty as it was pretty and the garnachas de venado were also very good. The chilaquiles negros short ribs were the favorite for the third course although everyone also really liked the pork cheeks chilaquiles rojos. For dessert, it was hard to go wrong between the chocolate mole cake, the churros and the rice pudding. The drinks were interesting and tasty and several featured mezcal. There are sobmany mezcal drinks to choose from including flights and pages of alternatives. There was more than enough food and the meal was well paced. The service was really friendly and the whole atmosphere was relaxed and fun. Claro has a beautiful outdoor seating area in back as well. read more
TLDR: Run dont walk for this Michelin Star pre-fixe! Claro is easily the best Oxacan food I've had. The pre-fixe menu is extremely well thought out. First course: augachile de fresas was spicy and refreshing all in one bite. The strawberry and scallop combo with the hot oil and vinaigrette was delightful. Second course: The ganarchas were probably my least favorite part of the meal only because it was not as agile to cut and eat. The flavor profile was spot on and was not gamey at all for venison! Third course: Get the mole rojo with pork cheek, you wont regret it! The pork is melt in your mouth soft and extremely flavorful. Fourth course: The rice pudding and chocolate cake were both delightful and the cake was my personal favorite. The cincher overall however is the price. For a michelin star restaurant serving delicious and beautiful dishes, $72pp for 4 courses felt like a steal. read more

Easily one of the best meals I've had in NYC. Made dinner reservations for my partners birthday. The 4 course menu is convenient for a party of 2 to share about 1/3 of the menu. We started with the aguachile and the octopus tostada. Word of caution: our server said that although the aguachile was one of the best first courses, it was also 8/10 spicy. He was not wrong. Second course was memela de Maria Sabina and tacos de barbacoa. The mushroom memela had so many different flavor profiles mixed with the chew of the memela it rested on. The tacos were good as well. It was very exciting to have real barbacoa from goat (not beef like you usually see). Third course was mole all day - mole negro and mole rojo. The pork cheek was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The duck was perfectly cooked and both proteins paired well with the brilliant mole. We also opted to order the two mezcals that are recommended as pairings to these two mole dishes. Dessert was mole cake and arroz con leche. The mole cake was the gem of the meal. Everything you love about mole in the previous course was folded into a decadent chocolate souffle. We also added the Carajillo Shakerato cocktail for dessert which was like a boozy cold brew cocktail. A perfect end to a perfect meal. read more

It's super hard for me to spend a lot of money for a taco. Granted, these tacos were incredible! However, for something significantly cheaper I feel like I could have been equally satisfied. Very good food, it just felt too expensive. However, I loved their spicy cocktails! Those were worth every penny! read more

I took advantage of the first Sunday in Spring to venture into Brooklyn and dine outdoors. We enjoyed the prix-fixe brunch menu and a couple of items on the snacks menu Aguachile - scallops, pomelo and satsuma mandarin, habanero quemada - a little bit spicy and quite refreshing Memela de Maria Sabina - wild mushrooms, goat cheese crema, pasilla - dense/filling and good Chilaquiles - braised short rib, mole negro, fried egg, totopos, crema - absolutely delicious Chocolate Mole Cake - good Churros - delicious! The most notable impression I got from each dish was how fresh and high quality the ingredients were; and how fine the execution was. Everything was so tasty and satisfying without leaving you feeling heavy and tired. This is upscale Mexican Oaxacan cuisine in a peaceful quaint setting (at least in the backyard patio) with tables socially distanced. Staff and service was also pleasant and professional, I look forward to checking out their dinner menu! read more

It's been awhile since I've had a dining experience like the one at Claro. Inside and out, it looks and feels like a cozy neighborhood spot. It's welcoming and warm, with an open but quiet kitchen. And I loved that if you're waiting in line for the bathroom, you'll be able to peruse beautiful ceramic wares from Oaxaca. During brunch service, they do a three course prix fixe for a pretty reasonable price, and they offer a mezcal pairing. There were quite a few options to choose from per course, which was great though made my decision even more difficult since everything sounded so delicious. Ultimately, I went with the aguachile, the mole rojo pork cheeks, and the chocolate mole cake. The aguachile was super fresh and had a spice/heat that built as you ate. By the end of the course, I was really feeling it! The mole pork was so tender and had nice flavor. And the cake was a perfect end to the meal, not too sweet but lots of spices at play. I had a bite of my friends chilaquiles, which was incredible, and rice pudding, which was good but I preferred the cake. Once I was reminded that Claro has a Michelin star, I had no doubt the food would be delicious, but what really stood out to me was how wonderfully slow it all was. It was clearly intentionally paced and even after we were finished eating I didn't feel rushed at all, an uncommon experience in these times where tables are told in advance exactly how many minutes they'll have to eat. Came for brunch and had a good experience. Wish you could order a la carte (they only do a pre-fixe during brunch) but not a big deal. I tried: + Corajillo shakerato + Tuna tostada + Aguachile + Chilaquiles + Mole rojo + Churros + Helado de mezcal The highlights were the shakerato cocktail and chilaquiles. Love their mescal bar and open kitchen . Their staff is so friendly and you definitely need to make reservations early in advance. My bf made a brunch reservation for my birthday since it was a Michelin star . Overall, nice experience and flavoring but the short ribs didn't have as much flavor as we thought. Appetizer and dessert was good. They also have a small bite section at the bar. read more

Was looking for a fun, Mexican spot to dine in and came upon Claro! Upon entering, we could tell the interior was small but it felt cozy and lively. Came for their 3-course pre-fix menu and was not disappointed (except for the enmoladas de calabaza). For appetizers, we had the tostada which was fresh and full of life; the guacamole added a very creamy texture and the sourness of the beet contrasted the sweet avocado and the cheeses saltiness added that nice punch to it, creating a harmony of flavors. Aguachile had a perfect blend of flavor and was mouthwatering and the empanadas were delicious. Who knew "wild greens" empanadas would be this good! The mole rojo was amazing as well the chicken was so tender you can cut it with a fork the mole sauce and sour cream was perfect for the chicken as well. The mustard greens cut down on the sweetness of the mole sauce and added a crunchy texture to the dish that was flavorful. The short ribs in the Chilaquiles was very tender and juicy. One of their must have entrees for sure! Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy the enmoladas de calabaza but our waiter was gracious and allowed us to order something else. We ordered the masa pancakes, and boy oh boy, they couldn't go wrong with it. We were glad we chose this and definitely enjoyed it over the enmoladas de calabaza. For dessert, we had churros, chocolate mole cake and arroz con leche. All were delicious but the entrees definitely topped it all! Overall, we're glad we chose this spot and will definitely return to try out other items from the menu since it's seasonal and of course to try the dining experience on their patio. Food: 9/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Value: 10/10 Claro, located in Brooklyn's Gowanus area about a fifteen minute walk from the G train (Carroll Street) or a five minute walk from the R train (Union Street), is a quaint little restaurant with a lively atmosphere. It was started by chef/owner T.J. Steele in the summer of 2017 and focuses on Oaxacan food. At over 4.1 million people, Oaxaca is the tenth most populous of Mexico's 32 states and is known for its ethnodiversity, indigenous peoples, and production of mezcal, mole, and chocolate. Claro was awarded one Michelin star in the fall of 2018 which it has retained each year since. The four course prix fixe dinner (now priced at $80 vs. where it started at $72) remains a great value despite slight price inflation, which is affecting all restaurants these days. The Corajillo Shakerato cocktail (Oaxacan Cold Brew, Dakabend Oaxacan Rum, Licor 43, Giffard Banane Du Brésil Liqueur, Chocolate Dust) was very smooth and flavorful. I liked the chocolate dust in the drink and on the orange garnish. The tostada de atún was one of the best versions I've had of this type of dish. The seasoning on the tostada tasted a bit like Doritos Cool Ranch, which was fun, and the tuna was fresh. It was nicely balanced with the crunch of the chicharron and the tang of citrus fruit (I think it was blood orange). The MEMELA DE MARIA SABINA was very savory and delicious. The heritage pork cheeks served with the MOLE ROJO were really tender. When I cut into them I could see the steam rising out, which was reassuring. I asked my server Gabbie how this dish was cooked and she said it may have been done via sous vide then braising, which explains the moisture. Very nice. The last course was dessert aka postre, of which I chose the CHURROS. They were liberally dusted with cinnamon and sugar and served with a caramel or dulce de leche sauce. Not bad, but not excellent either. At the end I was given a 70% cacao bar to take home, which was a nice touch. Service was excellent. Gabrielle was very informative in going through the components of each dish at the outset so that I could make an informed decision on which to select for each course. There was a male restaurant employee standing behind her when she was doing this, which was kind of odd, though. I am not sure why he was there and what that was about. Maybe he was in training and was learning from her apprentice-like, or maybe he was supervising her, I don't know. I felt slight anxiety because going through the menu took some time, and I didn't know if he was waiting to speak when she was done or what. But whatever, not a big deal. If Claro has zero fans, I'm dead. We went last summer and had the best experience. Even though it was Michelin starred the attire was more laid-back and we loved the dark ambient lighting. The server was so amazing with giving advice on drinks and the menu. We had a party of three so we each got different things for each course to try it all. And everything exceeded our expectations. The spicy frozen strawberry margarita is to die for. We loved the heirloom tomato starter and the bone marrow. And all of the desserts are amazing. read more

Their brunch was absolutely delicious! I visited with 3 friends and we were so blown away by the menus. I'm gonna start with dessert bc it was that good. I had the mezcal ice cream and when I say this was one of the best bowls of ice cream I have ever had I mean that quite literally. Flavor and texture were a 10/10. The texture was so velvety and creamy with the perfect mouth feel. You can definitely taste the smokiness of the mezcal but it's not overwhelming. I didn't ask what the other flavors were but it was the perfect mix. I love mezcal and they really showcase its flavor in all the cock tails. I had the jungle milk punch and the le club. Both delicious and refreshing. For our meal, I started off with the Aguachile de Fresca which was delicious. The scallops were very fresh and the strawberries were the perfect addition. This dish is also pretty spicy, so proceed with caution but definitely worth the pain. The Chilaquiles Negros were also immaculate. The beef had the perfect tenderness and the mole was rich and flavorful. Will definitely be back for dinner! read more

We agree with the rest of Yelp... This is solid 4-star cuisine. We especially appreciated the outside area with the spread out tables (we visited during the age of covid). Also, really appreciated the excellent cocktails, of which I had several. Foodwise- not sure I'd call the food "special", but everything was well made and tasty. I think what stood out to us was the trout and the mole cake. Very nice. We'd definitely go here again if we were in the area and wanted some upscale cuisine. read more

The short: one of the best COVID-19 / outdoor seating situations I've yet to experience in NYC. Food, ambiance, cocktails and service were all great. The longer: made a late Sunday evening Resy. We stopped at the brewery around the corner first, and then checked into the front. They check you in via iPad for contract tracing and all staff/patrons are masked. They walk you through a now-empty restaurant to a magical back porch, covered in grape vines and soft lighting. They're currently doing a $72/pp price fixe, 4 course situation. We shared everything on the menu -- and everything was delicious. The fried oyster tostada, lengue tacos and mole negro with duck breast were standout. The pineapple cocktail -- el carpintero -- was also delicious. Overall, amazing meal and experience. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back. Thanks to the staff for creating such an awesome vibe. read more
Claro was our first venture back into the dining world post lockdown, and couldn't have picked a better place! Their $72/person tasting/price fixe menu is an amazing value - I absolutely guarantee you won't be hungry when you arrive at the end of the meal. Dish after dish I was repeatedly reminded of how much I love the food at Claro. The aguachile was perfect starter on warm summer night - cold, and teeming with textures, spiciness, sweetness. Cannot go wrong with any of their tostadas, and their freshly made tortillas serve as the perfect complement to their delicious moles. Had multiple cocktails, which all were wonderful and delightfully cooled us down from the scorching heat. Their backyard is gorgeous too - one of the nicer settings to enjoy a meal at night. Has to be on any person's dining hit list this summer. Already looking forward to the next time I come back! read more

Still outstanding. Most recent visit, we did the new-ish price-fixed four-course menu. My wife got the tostada with fried oysters, empanada frita with crab, mole negro with duck, and churros. I got the aguachile with amberjack (with some excellent habanero kick to it), mushroom memela, garnachas with venison (extra), mole segueza with scallops, and chocolate mole cake. Our favorite dish of the night was the black mole with duck (no big surprise -- also, clutch move here is to order some tortillas on the side), along with the tostada, and (for me, at least) the aguachile and the garnachas. (Venison is not my wife's thing.) The memela had been my favorite on our previous visit, but I didn't love this filling as much as the one from last time (chorizo). I'd probably get something in place of the mole segueza next time. (Eg the mole rojo, which we loved last time.) Still one of our favorites. We'll be back. read more
Claro is a special restaurant and such a great place to have in the Gowanus / Park Slope area. I was treated to my birthday dinner here and could not have been more pleased with the experience. They do a 4 course tasting menu for $75, which is expensive, but not unreasonable for the quality of the meal. Favorites were the tuna tostada, scallop aguachile, mole rojo, and chocolate mole cake. My only critique is that the mole should have come with a few tortillas to dip in the sauce. Also, come during the summer so you can eat in their gorgeous backyard space. A truly special (Michelin starred) restaurant in Brooklyn. read more

The food here was amazing, each bite was so flavorful. I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was a perfect choice - the atmosphere isn't stuffy at all and it was an ideal place to get good food. I thought the value for the amount of food we got was great and the drinks our server recommended were delicious. We will definitely be back! Came here last night for outdoor dining. In the rare instances that I'm going out to eat post-lockdown, I always do my background research in advance to check the place out. Are the seats well-spaced? Does it seem like it's meeting basic safety criteria? And then of course, does the food seem good? Claro met and exceeded all those requirements! A couple of blocks from the Gowanus canal, there's a hidden backyard patio that looks like an oasis (even with everyone wearing masks and gloves). The ivory covering the walls and overhead trellis gives it a romantic, whimsical feel and while it happened to be cool this evening, it would definitely provide some much needed respite from an 85 degree dining day. The only option for dinner is the 4 course prix fixe menu, but it totally delivered! All the dishes were great including the ones pictured but special shout-outs to the tostada de berenjena with eggplant and oyster tacos. Also: not pictured here is the chocolate mole cake which is the ultimate in rich, ramekin-based comfort foods. read more

We came here yesterday for brunch and had so much food from the three course tasting menu. Price point is very reasonable as well. Mole was so good in all the dishes we had. Drinks: camaleon was a great tequila choice, went well with the full meal. Maquina verde was not too Mezcal forward and lovely if you like coconut! For starters: we got the day boat scallops with mandarins -- spicy but delicious (the coconut drink came in handy). The tuna tostada was so unique and flavorful! Mains: chilaquiles- the short ribs were tender and went well with the fried egg and mole negro. Mole rojo tasted even better with the fried pork. Dessert: the churros were a little too fried for my liking and the chocolate mole cake was good but a little too moist (may have just not been for me). Amazing 3 course brunch for $48 at this one Michelin starred Oaxacan restaurant. For those interested in an even bigger menu, they offer a $78 4 course dinner that can be paired with their curated mezcal flight. Most of the brunch and dinner meal options were the same, which I totally appreciated. Despite having one less course than in the dinner menu, I left feeling quite stuffed. First off, the presentation of each dish was immaculate. The plates were all from handmade clay and enhanced the dining experience. For the appetizers we got the Tostada de Atun and Aguachile de Tomate. Both of the dishes could not have been a better start to our meal. The yellowfin tuna matched perfectly with with the tangerine, avocado, and the chicharron and gave that citrusy fresh taste each crunchy bite. The tuna tostada was honestly my favorite dish of the meal. The Aguachile was also extremely flavorful and had the greatest spicy kick from the charred habanero oil. The kampachi, cucumbers, radishes, and onions paired so well with the spicy tomato sauce (that your server will warn you about being the spiciest dish on the menu). For our mains, we got the Chilaquiles and the Enfrijoladas. The Chilaquiles are the perfect dish for meat lovers; the short-ribs pull apart with your fork seamlessly and pair well with the fried egg that has a perfectly runny yolk. The totopos (fried triangular corn) are soaked in the mole negro and spread between the short ribs and the runny fried egg. Quite a hearty meal. The Enfrijoladas may not be everyone's cup of tea as the dish did not have any meat, but was different than any other meal I have ever had. The corn tortillas are soft from being dipped in a bean sauce and stuffed with ricotta cheese. Most of the dish had a purée like texture with large beans sprinkled on top of the dish. The thin layer of squash on top made the dish truly picture-worthy. For dessert we got their famous churros and chocolate mole cake. Their churros are made from corn, which gave them quite a unique taste, not to mention the Mexican caramel sauce (cajeta) made with goat's milk. You taste the goat's milk every time you dip your churro in the sauce. The chocolate mole cake was truly decadent. It had a very soft texture but was also very sweet. The whipped cream thankfully cut the sweetness of the mole cake nicely. I would recommend sharing this dessert with someone, who is getting another lighter dessert since it is definitely on the heavier end. All in all, loved our experience here. We were lucky in getting a spot at the bar through a walk-in. If you make a reservation a day or so in advance, you can easily get a table for lunch or dinner. Came here for my sister in laws birthday and had like a prix fixe menu where we picked an appetizer, a 1st course, a 2nd course and dessert from a list. MY FAVORITES WERE The AGUACHILE AND MOLE NEGRO DUCK Aguachile-(day boat scallop, summer melon, charred habañero)-highly recommend this. Perfectly spicy and tolerable for me. Any spicier and It would have been too much. It was really refreshing. Reminded me of ceviche buy soupier. Tasted amazing with the tortilla chips. A bit skimpy on the scallops but I still really enjoyed the aguachile. Tostada de Remolacha (Blooming Hill Farm beets, guacamole, queso fresco, toasted spice vinaigrette)-my husband ordered this and it was pretty good as well. Flavorful. Garnachas (venison, salsa tomate, age sheep's milk cheese) For my next plate, I ordered the garnachas. Came with 2 pieces. It was also pretty good and flavorful. My husband ordered the Empanada de Quelites (Blooming Hill Farm greens, chile de árbol- chicatanas salsa). The greens inside the empanada had an interesting taste to it, and it was quite pleasant. The sauce with the guacamole was delicious The MOLE ROJO (braised Heritage pork cheeks, stone fruit salad) was pretty good. The pork was sooo tender and falls apart so easily. It kinda reminded me of very tender short ribs. Mole was flavorful but I really preferred my husband's entree more. The mole rojo tasted a tiny bit sweeter than the mole negro. My husband had the MOLE NEGRO (seared duck breast, spring onion, fingerling potato). The duck was amazing. I loved it way more than my pork cheeks. The texture of the duck was so soft and it just left a better impression on me than the pork cheeks. It was so flavorful as well. Arroz con leche desert- pretty light. Had many different things (huckleberry berries and whipped cream) going on for it which was nice as the flavor profile changed with every bite. Chocolate mole cake- oh man, so heavy. This is a cool restaurant, with such a carácter. The space is really well designed. It has an open air kitchen with an open oven, where you literally see the tomatoes and peppers slowly being roasted. The ceramics used as plates and bowls where food is served are truly art works by independent Oaxaca-based artists, who used dark clay to render bowls animals from Oaxaca's both dry and westerly ecosystems. . They are displayed at the center of the space in what seems to be a multitude of animated clay. So much magic. The food is extraordinary,. Fresh updated versions of Oaxaca sensitivities.
