I always have an amazing time at Clark's. The food is amazing as well as the service. Lisa is very hospitable and caring.

We stopped in for a quick drink and a snack in between events during a track meet this past Saturday. Very cute inside and lots of friendly neighborhood bar vibes. They had my husband's favorite beer on tap, Maine Lunch, something we don't get to see on tap often. I had the Strawberry Fields. Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. My daughter ordered a lemonade and she was offered about 5 different options for flavors. We shared the chicken tenders. We chose to have them tossed in barbecue sauce with blue cheese on the side. Perfectly cooked, crispy, sauce was great. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We are not from this area but if we are back in the area, we will be back! read more

This was my first visit in since changing over from Young's. The renovation of the interior is really nice and classy. I also like the buffers between the booths. I ordered a Cobb salad, which was good. I will say red onion is too strong in my personal taste. I was happy with my food regardless. My dad enjoyed his special calzone. Seated right away on Saturday at lunch time. Service was decent. Cocktails were meh, but the food was EXCELLENT. My husband ordered a sausage pizza. Crust, sauce and cheese were fantastic. Food: My partner and I ordered from here the first time. We ordered from the brunch menu to go: I ordered the gluten free avocado toast (no bleu cheese) and a side of fries. My partner and I went to eat our food 10 minutes after picking it up. When I saw my avocado toast, I was more than disappointed and shocked. I paid almost $10.00 for two pieces of soggy bread with a little avocado on it, one cut up small tomato, and pickled onions (see attached photos). The fries were okay at best, they were very disappointing due to the fact that they were very soggy. Overall, I'm still hungry and disappointed over my food. Service: The person I spoke to on the phone was extremely nice and helpful, hence the two star rating instead of the one star. They were helpful with helping my partner and I navigate through the brunch menu (the online menu we were looking at hadn't been updated). They also assisted me with navigating items that were gluten free. Ambiance: N/A; ordered to go. Overall, I am disappointed with my experience food-wise. Service-wise, the person we talked to was great. Unfortunately, my partner and I probably won't be coming back. read more

Clark's American Bistro opened in Downtown Durham recently, formerly Young's Restaurant. I stopped in here for Sunday lunch, a good time when they were not busy yet, I was the only customer during my visit. Upon entering for dining in, temperature was taken and Covid questions were asked. The restaurant is sectioned with the full service bar area (8 beers on tap) to the right (plexiglass dividers at the bar, and long dining room area to the left and back with booths (high glass window dividers).  I was seated in a corner booth near the front window and offered a drink (I got water). I started out with a cup of Chili ($4) served with a small piece of grilled cornbread. The chili (vegan) was pretty spicy and thick & hearty which had beans (kidney, pinto, black), carrots, peppers, and tomato base. The grilled cornbread was good, not sweet. Next, the Baja Fish Tacos ($12), 2 fish tacos were comprised of lightly fried Haddock (crisp coating), chipotle aioli dressing, cabbage slaw, pico de gallo in soft grilled corn tortillas. The accompanying fries were deep fried golden and salted, hot soft texture inside, a bit greasy.  I had enough food and passed on the offer for apple pie or fried oreos for dessert. The check came of to $17.44 before tip. The food here was pretty good and the service was very attentive. The waitress checked up on me a few times and left me in peace to finish my lunch. Light music was playing over the speakers (including Fleetwood Mac) and the waitress and bartender were chatting about their extended family lives during covid times, which sounds a bit similar to a few of my friends. During this health emergency (in 2020), masks are required here, except when seated and eating and drinking. The staff here were masked. read more

We always come here when in Durham. Food is great and staff is friendly. The owners are inviting and usually come around to the tables and say hello to you. Great place to grab a beer and burger. I was disappointed after our last visit though. We had ordered a special burger, received the wrong order so they took it back. After waiting another 20 minutes they brought back the same burger with the wrong toppings scraped off and the wanted toppings placed on the old burger. We k ow because there were still mushrooms in it which my daughter hate! She was starving at this point so she scraped off the remaining shrooms and ate the burger. I understand that we shouldn't waste a good burger but at least comp it. I just think this is poor service. I'm sure we will go back because everyone deserves a second chance and we do like the folks there. I was wrong not bringing this up to them but at the time we had already eaten and my daughter didn't want me too. I don't want to dissuade people from going here, hence the three stars, but just want you to be armed with information. read more

After several visits I feel compelled to add that the staff is courteous, helpful and professional. The servers adeptly and efficiently walk the line between being too attentive and ignoring the customer. As a bonus point, they have avoided the diner lingo of calling me "honey" which I find condescending, ageist and really irksome. Dude will do. Kidding. read more

Spent the week in Durham for work. I came to Clarks twice during that stay and both times the food and drinks were excellent. Got a burger with Cajun fries the first time and came back on $10 pizza night and got the sausage pizza which was great. Will def come back here if I'm ever in this neck of the woods again read more

So disappointing! I am a local and came with out of town guests. I was so embarrassed! It was a quiet day. No excuse for being too busy. Food ranged from unremarkable to yuck, like no one really cares here. My sister in law has the eggs Benedict which was horrible. Weird yellow gobs of what they called Hollandaise sauce. The Canadian bacon was more like a piece of cold cut than a nice slab of bacon. And how hard is it to make a decent grilled cheese? It was sad. The sourdough bread could not have been sourdough. Both the cheeses tasted like American (tasteless) and the whole thing was dry. $14 for that? The fries that came with it were soggy. Very few vegetarian options, just like their former Italian place, which I alway found strange in a college town. They could not make an egg white omelet. What kind of brunch doesn't offer an egg white option? Not sure why it's even called brunch. It's really just a limited menu. (Served a canned beverage without a glass? At least he popped open the top for me!) And it's not very cozy. So sad this is what we have in town. I wish we had picked somewhere else and sorry I to have given this place a shot. read more

Went in with no expectations, and left a little disappointed. In all fairness parts of my experience were good. I ordered the Drunken Haddock with a lemon & white wine sauce over cornbread stuffing with asparagus and shaved Brussels sprouts. I got basically a bowl of soggy something with nice fish and carrots with no substitutions explanation so...However, the grilled cheese with bacon, pesto and avocado that my girl friend had was delicious. Went there for breakfast, and left at lunch. We waited almost 45 minutes from the time we got seated until we got our food. We ordered a eggs and a English muffin sandwich. When the food came the bacon was hardly cooked, food was sub par. The best part of breakfast was the Fiddlehead beer. read more

Went here after my daughters game at UNH, was so disappointed. We both got the salmon bennie which was cold with a slab of salmon in the middle of two hard boiled eggs. They were not poached, nothing runny about them at all. Got a side of french toast too which was also cold and tasteless. Service took forever to bring out food (+30 mins) and allow me to pay my check, which was not discounted even though we complained. Unless you are a college kid going for the bottomless mimosa brunch, I would pass. read more

My family and I dined here for lunch this week after a visit to my husband's alma mater, UNH. We each enjoyed tacos - shrimp and pulled pork. They were very tasty but small portions (2 tacos each) with a ton of fries. The shrimp are fried which threw me off but everything was tasty and the staff were all friendly and helpful. read more

This has become one of our favorite spots. Yes,we are elderly but we are not ready to spend an afternoon playing bingo, so it is worth taking the short drive from Exeter to mix with a younger crowd. We enjoy the diversity of the UNH students and we often ask for a seat by the window. The snotties are scrumptious in spite of their name. The cheese sauce is especially good. I sadly discovered that the same sauce appears to be covering the macaroni in mac and cheese and is rather bland. It needed a bit of splash. My favorite dish is the grilled cheese with bacon jam. It is filling and melted to perfection. However, I was sadly disappointed recently when they were out of the jam, so I settled for plain grilled cheese. It was delicious and I took half home because it was so filling. The onion strings are delightful but often are a bit greasy. The staff are quite attentive and kind and usually remember my chocolate milk before I mention it. It is served in a large glass with gooey chocolate syrup drizzled inside. Quite decadent! I'm so happy I stopped at this new restaurant in Durham! Lunch was absolutely delicious. I had the best Caesar salad that I've ever had. The waitress said the dressing was homemade. Lots of garlic! My daughter had the southwest salad. The salad and dressing were very fresh and delicious. We also had the Buffalo chicken tenders that were equally great. I will definitely be back for dinner.
