The AL Manager, Meg is very involved with the residents and their families. The caregivers are down to earth and have the resident's best interests at heart. She was nice, but things definitely went downhill. He was getting neglected. He can get obstinate, so they usually decided it was easier to leave him in his room all day. If he was sleeping in his chair, they'd leave a plate of food on a side table. This is memory care! When he would wake up he wouldn't even notice it, so he'd just miss a meal. He had a black eye, and no one knew what happened. His glasses were missing for a couple days and no one informed us. We decided to move him elsewhere. When we took the covers off his bed to move it, the mattress was disgusting. But not in the middle like you'd expect. It was on the edge of the bed, like he sat there calling for help and didn't get help in time. When we moved his easy chair, we found the source of the sour smell in the room, a spilled protein shake that hadn't been cleaned. We moved my father in law. No place is perfect, but it was obvious we needed him somewhere we can get to almost daily. They might be better now. They replaced the manager, but my problem was that they knew the other one was new at managing and should have been checking on things - not wait a full year. I think it took someone not getting their medications and ending up in the hospital before they took notice.

Want to learn to play poker, Mac Jongg, or one of the newer games like Catan or Azul? OLLI's the place. Need some exercise? Take yoga, Tai Chi, or water aerobics. For a faster pace, try line dancing. Interested in art? How about a class in drawing, printmaking, or bookmaking? You can create your own piñata! If writing is your thing, OLLI's offers classes in nonfiction reading and writing, memoir writing, monologue writing, and creative writing. Prefer music? Take a class in ukulele or guitar! And if that's not enough, attend one of their free workshops on a variety of health topics and life planning. Visit with Government officials or the local fish hatchery. Discover meditation and delve into Buddhist philosophy. I've been attending since I moved here to Galveston and love the variety of classes, the interesting people I've met, and the informative instructors that teach the classes. The curriculum changes somewhat from semester to semester, but I've always found several fun and interesting classes to attend. In fact, I usually have to force myself not to sign up for too many! The cost of most classes is $35. Some are more because of supplies and others are free. The classes run about 8 weeks and last about 2 hours each. Membership to OLLI is only $20 a year. Check out their website for information about current classes and seminars. Maybe I'll see you there!

My 85 year old mother is convalescing for two broken wrists and a few broken ribs. She will be there about 6 more weeks. As far as the expense, I was surprised to see it is ONLY $157 a day before insurance! They have satisfactory nursing staff, but polite for the most part. They deal with problems calmly and professionally. The food is marginal. Fairly clean facility. The main issue we have is with the administration of medications. They do well at giving them, but care is not taken by medical staff in reviewing drug interactions. With the elderly often taking many drugs, this can be a MAJOR issue. My mother had all her health issues stabilized and under control before entering Creekside. They then started loading up the drugs, with many of them new. Her blood pressure then started spiking at 200/90 a number of times. Other new symptoms also presented themselves. After doing my own investigation into drug interactions, I concluded that there were no severe or major interactions with the normal medication regimen. However, with the new medications there were a number of SEVERE and MAJOR drug interactions. I brought this to the attention of the medical staff and suspect they will make modifications. Drug interactions are always an issue that must be carefully reviewed by medical personnel. Sadly, it is rarely ever addressed, and doctors continue to just throw new medications on top of the others to attack symptom. All-in-all I would recommend Creekside to others, but with the above caveats.

I want to thank Cypress Assisted Living for taking such good care of my father…read more I brought my father to Cypress Assisted Living in early December 2025. Due to a fall, he had deteriorated over the previous six months. He could no longer walk, he lost 40lbs, and he suffered from delirium. When he arrived, we had to put him on hospice care. Within a few days of being in Cypress Assisted Living, he began to improve. It's now been four months since he arrived. He's gained back 20lbs. He hasn't had any delirium since his first few days there and he's "graduated" from hospice. He begins physical therapy this week to get him walking again. So how did this happen? It's very simple. Nellie (owner) has put together a staff that truly cares about the residents. They get dad up in the morning, get him breakfast and let him settle in his day. They have some activities, along with two big screen TVs in the common area. There are electric reclining chairs to accommodate every resident. The pictures you see on their website are 100% accurate. I visit at least once a week and EVERY time I visit him the place looks as beautiful as it does online. It's incredibly clean and has no bad odors. If you don't like what's for breakfast, they'll work with you to get something else. They are there to make the residents comfortable and happy. The owner (Nellie) is a nurse who understands how to treat seniors. Her people work 12-hour shifts. The resident only has to deal with one shift while they're awake, so it limits confusion for them. She keeps the place spotless. I was there and saw her moving the recliners to check that they were swept and mopped underneath. I'm not exaggerating when I say Cypress Assisted Living saved my father's life. During the first few weeks he would ask me, "Where do I go after I leave here?" Now he says he loves it here and doesn't want to leave. I can't wait to get him walking again, as it will make him so happy. Thank you to Nellie and her team for all they've done for our family.

I recently had a family needing to find a place for their mother, they trusted my suggestion to move her to Cypress Assisted Living and I've since received several messages from the family sharing how happy their mother is in her new home! "Chanel Mother seems to really like her new home! Thank you! And she really likes her nurse Sandy!" We absolutely recommended CAL for those looking for a more intimate assisted living community for their loved ones.
