We recently did a motorcycle ride up to Spruce Pine and stopped by CJ's BBQ. The service was excellent with the server quickly taking our order and getting our drinks to us. The food was very good. I had the beef brisket platter, which was super! The prices are very reasonable, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was good (it's a little hole-in-the-wall gem). Well after all that driving and walking on Saturday, Tony Vanoy saw the sign for CJ BBQ in Spruce Springs so we decided to stop. The aroma was overwhelming when we arrived and entered the building, so glad we decided to eat here! It was 12:45pm and we were both starving! We decided to share a Platter and choose 3 meats & 2 sides...Pulled Pork, Ribs & Smoked Sausage with Onion Rings and Baked Beans with Hush Puppies and we both ordered Sweet Tea....the waitress gave us a free piece of a Apple pie they made fresh and just out of the oven. A hidden gem, wonderful food and great place to eat. They have different BBQ sauces to try, near the checkout. We ordered the Pork rolls, brisket with baked beans and slaw, and a smoked bologna sandwich with fries. I highly recommend the pork rolls. A meal within its self. A very unique flavor and something I will get a craving for. Brisket was tender and very good. Tasty pulled pork, needed a tiny bit of bbq sauce, great sides, especially the sweet potato fries. They "don't have mac n cheese today" all 6 times out of 6 that I've been here, so don't get your hopes up on them having it. Good menu, good amount of seating inside, everyone was very friendly except for 1 employee. Traveling through area and passed this place. Decided to stop as we're trying as much bbq as we can during n/s carolina road trip. So glad we did. Got rib plate (with beans and mac&cheese) and brisket sandwich. Brisket sandwich was pretty good but ribs were amazing. And the mac and cheese was some of the best I've ever had. Greatest hole in the wall to stumble upon. Do these folks know BBQ? Multi-flavored pork rinds made in house each day. The Brisket was sliced, not shredded, and AMAZING. The BBQ pulled pork was somewhat dry and not as much flavor as I would have expected but a heaping portion. The other winner? The hushpuppies! We found this little gem while looking for a local place to get some lunch from on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I wish I would have taken pictures of our food, but let me tell you, you HAVE to visit this place whenever you are in town. I was a little hesitant at first when I saw other reviews mentioning that the food was a bit pricy, however, I am from Ohio and I found the prices to be way more than reasonable! Especially for how amazing the food was! Food Review: One of the best BBQ places I have been too, both back home and while traveling. We ordered the Hog rolls, pulled pork, and half rack of ribs. You could tell the meats are smoked very well - they had amazing flavor. The pulled pork was very flavorful and moist. The ribs absolutely melted off the bone and were very flavorful. Probably some of the best ribs I have had! I love that their sauce was on the side, and they had a wide selection of sauces to try! The original & Carolina gold were my favorite. For sides, we got baked beans, potato salad, and sweet potato bites. The baked beans had amazing flavor - they were seasoned very well and tasted very good. The sweet potato bites were to die for. The potato salad was also very fresh and flavorful! The appetizer of the hog rolls were also huge and very tasty! Also - portion sizes were great! I thought it was a great value for the portion and QUALITY of food you received. Great bbq. Went on Saturday afternoon, great service. A lot of local food here. I had the pulled pork with coleslaw. Pulled pork was awesome and the coleslaw really adds to the flavor. Loved this charming little local barbecue find on old NC 226 in Spruce Pine. Enjoyed so much that I visited twice while we were in town for Spruce Pine Christmas show. Both times enjoyed the barbecue with multiple sauce selections, but they've got an interesting menu on the board over counter that includes special sandwiches including fries bologna and other options (will look to try next time). Slaw is conventional Cole Slaw not barbecue slaw; fries and sides including (at the time) collared greens, sweet potato casserole (excellent), and baked beans all very tasty. My wife and I stopped by this little place. Seamed to be a slow day for them when we stopped by. The place looks ok nothing fancy at all (not that we were expecting fancy). The young girl that waited on us was nice but not the best waitress. She seamed more interested in sitting down and staring at her phone then making sure our drinks didn't go empty. We started with the Hog Rolls, I was in Hog Heaven, dang they were good. I could eat those all day. For our meal, I had the brisket, Mac and Cheese and potato salad. The brisket was delicious. The Mac and Cheese and Potato Salad were ok nothing special. My wife had the BBQ Cheese Fries. She really liked them. Another lady came out of the back and talked me into getting a piece of Peanut Butter Pie. OMG that was the best thing I have ever had. It's a good thing I don't live to close or I would get so fat stopping by there everyday for a piece of that pie. If your in the area stop by and try this place out. Worst food I have had in a couple of years. Ordered four sandwiches to go and could not eat as a sandwich because the bread fell apart from oil or grease. The BBQ was almost tasteless and the hush puppies were very dark from I think was from being fried in old oil, just my opinion. The sign on the front door should have tipped me off. It read something to the effect of, 'No cameras or videos inside. We have the right to refuse service to anyone.'  Not one employee was wearing a mask. I guess they don't want pictures going viral and health inspectors coming? The bigger question is why haven't they been shut down already. I would have left my pick-up order on the counter but I don't stiff people so I paid as quickly as I could and left. I didn't eat the food. They were out of two sides I requested, and had the audacity to call this sad pancake 'brisket'. The chocolate lava cake was straight out of a freezer bag so there's that.  As of this review, "a new projection from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington predicts the COVID-19 death toll could surpass 470,000 by March 1 if current trends continue. What a great find on our day trip to the area. Excellent pulled pork with a fantastic variety of sauces to choose from. Their original sauce is on every table is very good. I also highly recommend the vinegar sauce. The sides are made daily as is the pork which is smoked for 13 hours on site. The crinkle fries are even crispy...which most restaurants seem unable to do. We loved our visit to this little local place while camping at Spruce Pine. My husband, who is from Buffalo and VERY picky about his wings, said they were delicious and beyond affordable. I had a traditional BBQ plate with slaw and it was delicious-- especially adorned with the many choices of BBQ sauce available in the restaurant. Plenty of options for the kids and a fast and friendly environment. Portions were very large and we ended up taking some home-- including the delicious peanut butter pie we shared for dessert. We love this place! Always a family favorite when we are in town. The owners and staff are the sweetest! I would consider this place to be "greasy spoon" BBQ. Deep fried cheese curds, hush puppies, pulled pork etc. in my opinion their ribs are the best but if you want them, call ahead to see if they still have any available. Oh my word! Cheerwine BBQ sauce is AMAZING! The wings are good but even better dipped in this very unique sauce. My husband had the bbq plate and the crinkle cut fries and real baked beans were great choice to compliment the tender and flavorful bbq.
