Drove through Springfield on our way back to St Louis this weekend and got to try Civil Kitchen for the first time! Yum! Delicious burger & salad with a balsamic dressing I'm going to be attempting to recreate!! The bacon on the burger is peppery and thick, and so good! 1st visit to Civil Kitchen was possible in part due to a gift certificate I won from The Traveling Foodsters - a Springfield-area food review duo. Hubby and I visited around 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. We LOVED our burgers and compared them to Blacksheep burgers - some of our favorites! The thick and crispy bacon was a highlight. (Some of the bacon strip ends were too hard/ crunchy but overall that bacon was THICK and the burger was too! The Mac and cheese was pretty good. There are multiple types of cheese with the top layer having some nice melt to it. The brussel sprouts were supposed to be "crispy" but they were more so just cooked with a few small leaves giving a "crunch" while eating. They were almost too oily for me, but they tasted decent after eating a couple. (If you like crispy brussel sprouts, check out Black Market spike house! They set the bar HIGH!) This was the first restaurant I had tried in Springfield and it set the bar extremely high for the rest of the trip. Civil Kitchen is yet another restaurant located in the heart of downtown in Park Central Square. The atmosphere is modern and rustic with an upscale feel to it. I dined here multiple times during my trip and Sammy was by far my favorite server! She was so kind and very knowledgeable of the menu. Civil Kitchen offers a moderately sized menu with items made from scratch. All of the menu items are creative and well-put together. I ended up ordering the Crack Bread and Panko Fried Avocados as appetizers and the Fresh Atlantic Salmon Filet for my entree (which comes with steamed broccoli and roasted red potatoes). It was absolutely incredible. During one of my visits to Civil Kitchen I decided to go for dessert and ordered the Ooey Gooey Buttercake Ice Cream Sandwich... It was a large dessert that I split with my friends, but it was amazing! I would highly recommend this dessert as long as you are sharing. I could not have finished it even if I hadn't had dinner beforehand. P.S the restaurant has three separate areas with three separate bars. Right in the square with lots of amazing indoor/outdoor seating, I recommend siting by the window overlooking the water foundation or just out on the front (not back) patio. Things to Note: 1) Limited menu Prior to 11am. It is a limited weekend brunch menu. This means no chicken n waffles, but there is a very good gravy chicken and biscuit! 2) Really good bloody marys - but slightly pricey. $14 Chicken/Spicy Bloody-marys - but I guess it's like a meal in a drink! 3) Make your own mimosa bottle 4) Steak and Eggs with a lot of Steak (meh on standard non-crispy potatoes) 5) Morning Brunch Menu has a lack of vegetarian options and no vegan options 6) Happy Hours daily 7) No Ice Coffee (weird) 8) Most inventive brunch dish is a french toasted stuffed with pancetta, cream cheese, jam, and other fruits. So this is a great location downtown with an excellent drink menu - the food is a take on modern american. I do think the food is better for dinner vs. brunch - but sitting outside looking over square on a nice afternoon day is clutch. Wow! I was look forward to a good meal here. We order the wings as a appetizer and they where good. Them we made the mean meal. We go yhe bull goat cheese burger and that was good and juice. The kids mac & cheese good to. Now for my wife's dish, seared tuna, cheese cauliflower and crisp kale. The tuna was lightly seared with no seasoning on it. The cauliflower was soggy and not crisp and no cheese on it, crispy kale was okay. I called the waiter over and asked for the manager and her said he was the manager. I told him I was a chef, I don't like doing that at restaurants and explained what was rong with the dish. He said he will let the chef now about the dish. The waiter came back and said the chef said I was right and the gave me the bill and did not even take it off the bill. I was very disappointed. I do not yell or make a sean ay restaurant's. Best chicken & waffles that I've had Springfield! I was very impressed with both the portion size and the quality of the food. The staff was knowledgeable about their limited/rotating draft beers, and I would definitely come back to try a few more of their food/beverage options. The environment was pleasant- they had a few TVs for sport watchers and some good music for those trying to enjoy a conversation away from the bar. Everyone in my group seemed to enjoy their food, drinks, and I think we'll end up coming back soon. Logistical note- I don't know much about driving around in the area, but I was lucky to find street parking very close to the restaurant. I live downtown so go to this place often. Really solid spot and one of the only places downtown with outside seating. And a lot of outside seating at that! I come here a couple times a week. I'll come here for lunch most of the time. Typically I get a soup and salad. A few soup of the moments are good but I typically go with tomato basil. The black and blu salad is my favorite. The other salads don't match my palate as well. I tried the chicken chili for the first time today and wish I would have tried it sooner! It's light, with well balanced flavor. Naturally the flavor leans on the savory side with a chicken broth base. But they've added a touch of lime juice to balance the salty with sweet and sour. Really well done and the presentation is incredible! So good I started eating immediately and forgot to take a pic I'll add it next time because I know I will order this soup many more times! At lunch on weekdays, all sandwiches are $2 off. That's a great deal! Most sandwiches are heavy so only Friday lunch for me The civil burger is a great go-to. It has a really nice pickle, red onion relish on top with civil sauce. Really well put together flavors! It comes with two patties that may have seasoning (salt, garlic, spices, herbs) mixed in with the meat but for the most part, it seems unseasoned in the meat itself. Mixing is really the versatility of ground beef IMO. The toppings bring the entire burger back to delicious! Great burger overall! Definitely try this place! We stayed at the Hotel Vandivort right down the street from this restaurant and decided to try it out. This was one of the best places we at all weekend. I had the Bacon and Date salad and it did not disappoint. The dates with the goat cheese and bacon was super yummy. I got the small and couldn't finish it all. It was a large portion. Hubby got the chicken and waffles. The waffles were light not heavy and the chicken was real fried chicken pieces that were seasoned really well and very juicy-not dry. Service was great. A "made from scratch" kitchen menu, enjoyed our meal in a relaxed, local and fun atmosphere! Civil Crack bread appetizer was right out of the oven, hot and fresh, perfect with a dab of balsamic dipping sauce! We ordered one 3-side assortment for $10, including Brussel sprouts, au gratin cauliflower and onion rings. All were tasty, our Brussels sprouts were a bit on heavy salt side, but good complement with the others. Onion rings were thick, beer battered, crisp and flavorful - perfect to have with one of their many "tap" selections! Also tried a Mac-n-cheese side that had a nice smoky flavor. Finally, shared a house grilled cheese but added a fried chicken breast to it - this hit the spot with the sriracha mayo dip! Was hoping to try the Pork Panko cutlet but they were out of it that night, so a good reason to return and try when I get back to Springfield. Driving through to Texas and found this spot on Yelp. Very interesting dishes and we were intrigued. We had a little wait on a Saturday night (no problem), but waited at the bar and the service there was very poor and the host forgot about us. It was hit or miss on the food. Crack Bread was yummy. Prime Rib French Onion was fabulous. Porto Bella mushroom was tough and sides were cold. Maple Bourbon Glazed Petite Filet was good - A lot of meat, flavor was good, but sides were cold. Hubby was lucky enough to get 1 refill of his coke. The flavor of the food was very good, presentation, amount served and service was disappointing. I was disappointed in our food and service here. We asked for onion rings that were never delivered (we were not charged, so likely the server forgot). We each ordered a sandwich, the chicken sandwich for me and a burger for my husband, and both were overcooked, very dry, and generally lacking flavor. My chicken sandwich was supposed to come with pickles, so when I asked for some I was surprised when my server brought me a pickle spear. I asked for a few different sauces but was only given one. My husband had to ask a passing server for another beer, as neither of us were offered refills. We sat on the patio on a perfect summer evening. My fiancé ordered a couple delicious beers. Their beer selection is expansive. Civil has more than just your run-of-the-mill taps. They have good quality beer you can't necessarily get around town. We ordered the fries with the blue cheese crumbles on the side. This order of fries was huge! You definitely get your money's worth! I ordered a bourbon pomegranate lemonade which was delightful. My main course was 4 (yes, it comes with 4) pork belly banh mi tacos. These things were incredible! I was worried it wouldn't be enough food, but it was absolutely enough. The sweetness of the fruit salsa with the crispiness of the pork belly... absolutely to die for. For dessert we had the ooey gooey butter cake ice cream sandwich. This thing is a monstrosity. If you like things ultra sweet and huge, this is a dessert for you. My fiancé topped off the night with a 5 ounce pour of the coveted 120 minute IPA by dogfish head brewery, something that only came to Missouri very recently. Our server was Tommy, and he's a great guy. We had a beautiful night, and I absolutely recommend trying this place. My boyfriend and I came in a few months ago, got a table and no one showed up to get drink orders...we waited 25 minutes and finally decided to get up and go elsewhere.
