Ughhhhh. The espresso tonic I ordered was good, but the hojicha latte was so bad it pained my soul having to drink it. The ambiance is nice and all, but the service is not the best. It feels a bit rushed and not personable. The mixture of those things really didn't leave a good impression on me.
Came for lunch because I wanted to try out their foods. It was pretty busy on a Wednesday at lunchtime but we were able to get a table. It filled up soon after that. We got the Civil Avo Toast (nice presentation and unique and tasty combination of flavors), Barbacoa Breakfast Burrito (tasty but shockingly small for $16.75), and Liquid Gold (matcha with lavender, good but not worth $8.25). I think next time I'll stick with their coffees and pastries.
At my last visit to Civil Coffee, I fed both sides of my hunger -- my carnivorous side that loves a juicy steak and that other side that unleashes a full-blown vegicide on her plate. Since me and making decisions needed no coin toss for this particular brunchy event, I decided to go for both. The Barbacoa (brunch) Tacos, made with seasoned shredded Caribbean-spiced beef, loaded with avocado mash, and a tangy pickled onion on top, did not disappoint. Despite their petite size, this beefy duo is quite filling -- guess it's all that protein and good avocado fat trapped between a crispy corn tortilla. Decadent in taste, yet not too Civil has a wide variety of quality coffees, along with more of my favorite matcha tea drinks. The quick service at the front counter was a plus, though I can't say it was warm + friendly. Perhaps it was just a mirror to the gray day outside. Either way, the outdoor patio was refreshing and my order was good enough to want to come back.
Great latte, I got a lavender flavored one that was very nice. Breakfast sandwich was really good too, fluffy eggs, nice cheese, good sauce and bacon. More on the expensive side but that's everything these days... Service also great, shout out to the employee who was nice to me even though my lack of sleep addled brain looked up the menu online, failed to realize the menu changed a lot, and then blankly stare and panic at the cash register. Alas alas I blame the construction at my apartment. Ambiance also nice they have a good back patio and pretty nice seating. It was a bit busy on the Friday morning I went though. Parking is also not too bad to find in residential areas of highland park (sorry to the people who live there though I guess) I also immediately spilled my coffee which was unfortunate. I did get to meet a former professor here and we had a really nice chat (imo I hope she felt the same) and so now I'm more fond of this place
Civil Coffee is a chic and cozy coffee shop nestled in the Central Highland Park neighborhood. I stopped in for a late Saturday morning iced coffee and bite to eat. Definitely try the the Cafe and Crema if you are looking for a chilled delight in 12oz that gets you going. The EBC breakfast sandwich was ok. Maybe better at the shop than on the go. The staff was friendly and you could see the cooks right behind the register. Nothing to hide with lots of fresh ingredients in sight. If you have more time than I did, relax in the high ceiling and aesthetically pleasing inside or meander to the back patio. Friendly for all shapes, sizes, ppl, kiddos, and dogs.
Wife and I decided to stop by this spot as we were walking through highland park. This spot has gorgeous decor inside. Everything was clean and organized and looked very pleasant. We got an iced coffee and a matcha and with tip ended up paying around $16. The service was great and we got our drinks in just a few minutes. Wasn't too crowded on a beautiful Sunday around noon. Definitely a spot I would consider going back to when I'm in the area again.
Bumping my review one star because I came back a couple of times and was impressed with their drinks! Matcha is always solid but their cold brew with vanilla cream top was surprisingly delicious and not overly sweet! No wifi is still a bummer.
Vanilla oaty is the perfect treat on a hot summer day. Not overly sweet and the black salt is the perfect touch! Seating available inside and outside. Parking behind the building or street parking. You are able to access the building from the parking or Figueroa.
I had a nice lunch date with a friend here at Civil Coffee, the Avocado Toast was absolutely delicious & a unique offering from any coffee spot I've ever tried. It had sweet peas on it and was served over warm sourdough. The coffee & matcha tasted authentic & delicious. Ambiance inside was nice & could be a good place to get some work done, it was packed inside so we had to sit outdoors which was fine but it was very hot out there as a heads up for anyone visiting on a warm So-Cal day. I'd love to visit again soon, I only wish there was one closer to me in the San Fernando Valley!
I tried their cafe and crema drink! It was okay but definitely not worth $8.25 :') While I was in line a lot of people were taking about the drink "Figueroa" so I'll try that the next time i find myself here.
Super cute coffee shop, they have both indoor and outdoor seating. They do get busy so be prepared to wait, the line does get long. The burrito here are awesome, full of flavor, and looks like they make them in house.
We went on a rainy Saturday and this coffee house was packed. We ordered our drinks and found a table for the six of us. Don't be afraid to share a table with another customer. The menu has many different coffee drinks to choose from but I chose a hot Americano which was good. We were satisfied with our iced and hot coffee orders.
The Arroyo is genuinely one of my favorite drinks in LA. The lavender syrup is truly the best damn lavender syrup I've ever had. The interior is amazing at their original location here in Highland Park, with a really cute patio as well in the back. It's significantly busier than their DTLA location but this location really puts it all together very well. There are plenty of tables that are good for chatting or studying, although whether they are available is a lot more hit or miss than in DTLA.
We walked over here for some morning coffee after having breakfast down the street. It was quite a popular coffee shop. The inside was full, but make sure to walk all the way to the back through the door, and there is a full outdoor patio with tons of picnic tables, even a handful of them under the shaded cover. Such a great spot to come with kids and have them run around freely. They had a pretty good variety on the menu and I always love to see hojicha drinks. I ordered the hojicha honey latte as a hot drink and I really enjoyed it. My husband got the Figueroa latte and I liked that it came with a little biscuit on top. Nothing super fancy here but just really good quality coffee! It looks like they have parking on the backside so you can walk through the patio and back door to get in here, which is nice since the street parking on the front is limited. read more

There is NO WiFi. I specifically chose this place because I wanted somewhere to get some work done while enjoying coffee and food, so finding out only after I'd made my purchase was pretty frustrating. For a coffee shop, the lack of WiFi should really be posted at the entrance or register so people know before ordering. I had the barbacoa burrito and an iced Figueroa. Both were decent, not bad by any means, but definitely overpriced for what you get. Service was fine, and the ambiance is nice. I actually would have stayed for a while and probably ordered something else later had WiFi been available. Also worth noting that I had to pay for parking. Obviously that isn't the coffee shop's fault, but between parking and the higher prices, it ended up being a pretty expensive stop for somewhere I couldn't actually do the work I came there to do. I don't have an issue with a café choosing not to offer WiFi, but I do think that should be communicated upfront. Had I known before ordering, I would have chosen another coffee shop. If you're just coming for coffee, food, and the ambiance, you might have a different experience, but for my use case, I wouldn't recommend it. read more

A little bit hipster but mostly bougie with mod tones and definitely not louche --- for sure it was slacker-free when I popped in. It's just not that kind of place. They do a nice curation of beans from different spots -- Mexico was on tap that day --- and the brew was very nice indeed, a good balance, not bitter. Our counter person/barista was quick and friendly with our drinks, and it's a nIce enough spot with good lighting if you wanna hang for a bit. read more

I tend to write reviews only when a place is special in some sort of way that catches me off guard or is consistently really good. Civil is consistently really good! Have had cappuccinos, flat whites and lattes here. I love matcha but make my own and don't want to chance getting a bitter low grade matcha that's heartbreaking. Maybe one day I'll gamble and try it. Today I ordered a food item bc I saw many regulars getting their drink and food item over the days I've frequented Civil. Tried the salmon avocado toast and it's really good. The service is always great and again I love the consistency of quality. It has become a spot I regularly go to outside of Two Kids coffee (they're not as sit down friendly). read more

I really wanted to like it here. It's latino-owned, it's close to my house, it's a staple of the neighborhood, the coffee's pretty good and it looks cool inside. Gave it so many chances. Unfortunately, I think I've finally had enough. The service is very hit or miss. I've been in and had very friendly and efficient service one day and crappy, dead behind the eyes, dismissive rudeness the next. But I don't go there for friendship, so I don't really care. The reason why I will not be returning is because they are ripping off their customers. I ordered a quad shot of espresso, no milk, no water. They were really good at charging me for 4 shots of espresso, not so good at pouring it. The general understanding is that a shot is approximately 1 to 1.5 ounces of liquid. When I got the drink they handed me this thimble of coffee. I knew it wasn't right. This isn't the first time I've had this issue, the last time they assured me they had poured the correct amount (and made me feel like a dummy for even asking). Instead of arguing with them, I took my doll-sized coffee home and weighed it on my digital scale, it weighed 1.09 ounces INCLUDING THE CUP & LID! I can abide the spotty customer service, but I cannot abide being ripped off and gaslit. There is a lot of coffee in the area. Do yourself a favor and go to any of them rather than this place. read more

I'm visiting LA and couldn't make it to the coffee shop, because of work. I ordered two cups of coffee through Uber Eats, with whole milk and raw sugar. It hit the spot and woke me up :-) very tasty. Quick service. read more
Their drink came with a little cookie which was cute. The latte was delicious but didn't particular wow me perhaps I ordered the wrong item. A great spot to come alone or with someone. There's some seating and it's conveniently located by shops. read more

Thought the oat milk vanilla shaken espresso drink (with black Hawaiian salt??) was overpriced at near 7.00 and had a nasty aftertaste. Staff was not really friendly. They don't have a menu for you to look at until you get up to the counter (on the countertop) so it's sort of an awkward rushed ordering, unless you know what you want ahead of time. It is large and spacious, but loud and not somewhere I'd sit to read or study or relax. I tossed the drink out after a few gross sips and figured I should've taken my 7 bucks elsewhere for the afternoon caffeine fix. read more

I came to get some work done which isn't the best because there is no WiFi, but if you can be offline or if you can tether this spot is great. Parking felt pretty easy with street parking out front / nearby. I ordered the hojicha latte. The toasted flavor of the tea was what I always look for and this one had it. It could've been warmer cuz I love my drinks scalding and I even asked for it to be extra hot but it still came out only warm. That' said, the server and baristas were nice and quick to get the drink ready. Tons of seating but also very busy so still a potential to not find a spot. The place seems like a solid spot and if I'm in the area, I'd definitely come back! read more

The Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant was as good as I hoped it would be! Every bite was heaven! Twice-baked chocolate croissant filled with hazelnut praline cream & topped with toasted almonds, powdered sugar and dark chocolate. My husband ordered the Figueroa coffee & he keeps saying that it was the best coffee!!!! Parking available in the back. Restroom available for customers. Plenty of shaded seating outside too. Civil Coffee (est 2016) is a modern coffee shop located in gentrified Highland Park neighborhood of NorthEastern LA. Owned by the Morales brothers. It has modest selection of coffee, teas, pastries and food. They have merch and coffee bags for purchase. Of their three locations this is the most spacious and popular among locals. I arrived on a weekend, as a first time customer, and was met by a long line. However, that didn't dampen my spirit for it was moving at a modest rate. I ordered an Iced Coffee, Hot Latte and Avocado Toast. Both coffee drinks were perfectly brewed and concocted to my liking. Similarly, my AT on thick sourdough was delightful and tasty not to mention its beautiful presentation. Staff were amiable and professional. Atmosphere was relaxing. No Wifi available which was very surprising and disheartening. Coffee shop without wifi? It's like the most basic requirement. Prices were economically fair. Rear parking lot and side street parking available. In this voluminous review, it's time to make a conclusion. Overall, it is a great coffee shop and I highly recommend. read more

Civil Coffee was great! The matcha is tasty and it was quick! Lots of indoor seating which is nice. Did not try any of the food but would love to next time I come back. The cashier was very friendly and welcoming. read more
