Portobello mushroom burger with garlic fries
    Ciara S.

Needing food to fuel my Christmas shopping trip I popped into City Picnic for lunch today. I'd tried this eatery a couple of years ago for breakfast and wasn't overly impressed so hadn't returned. However I thought I'd give them another go. I opted for the portobello mushroom burger with goats cheese and caramelised onions, a side of garlic fries and a pint of Carlsberg. Given that you walk up to a till to order and prepay for your food, napkins are kitchen roll, cutlery is plastic and decor is takeaway joint style, I was surprised that the cost of my lunch was circa £13! Granted, I didn't examine the menu prices before I ordered so I'm not sure if I was overcharged or if this was the correct cost. I was in a rush to hit the shops before the Sunday Christmas shoppers descended so didn't double check at the time. I must admit the food was extremely delicious and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I won't rush back as I think City Picnic is overpriced for what it is in terms of food as well as format and style of 'restaurant'. I just don't think City Picnic is worth the money they're currently charging...

    Coeliac friendly

Met my friend who is coeliac for lunch and chose City Picnic as we had heard they had a good range of gluten free options. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly hostess who offered us menus, advised us to take a seat and order at the counter when ready. My friend asked if there was gluten free menu and was advised by one of the waiting staff that everything on the menu bar the wraps was available as a gluten free option. This made my friend's day as gluten free options are often limited, after perusing the menu we both decided to go with the lunchtime special of chicken burger & chips for £6 (50p supplement for gf bun). The food arrived quickly and we were both impressed, the chips were crispy and well seasoned. The chicken breast for the burger was tender & moist with a light crispy gf batter, a nice amount of salad and an onion ring done in the same batter as the chicken. We will definitely be back in the near future to sample some more of the.

Barking Dog Restaurant - beef shin burger is definitely not your average burger

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.
