This review is for the location at 2604 Brownsville Rd., Pittsburgh 15227. I found that location…read morevia Google and did a double-check with Yelp to see that the reviews were consistently positive, because I was in a minor panic. When doing some freelance writing on my couch the other night, I picked up a glass of water and it tipped over, falling directly into my $1,200 Lenovo Yoga laptop. I tried to flip it over to get all of the water out. I tried to open up the back to get the battery and/or hard drive out. I failed on all counts, and it was pretty clear that the laptop had immediately short-circuited and wasn't coming back to life. At that point, your concern is your data - your many, many documents and photos that you were going to back up one day, but something else always took precedence. (If you're reading this, back up your data. Now.) When you call the Secure Data Recovery phone number, you get a main office and they put you in touch with your local location. For me, that was just a few miles up Brownsville in a small shop that repairs cellphones, handles bill payments... I never would have noticed it. Jay was very honest, saying that if they could recover the hard drive data there at the shop they would try - and would even try to dry out and repair the laptop if at all possible. If they couldn't get the data, they'd send it out to Secure Data Recovery's main office where they have a clean room, are very good at what they do, but it would be more expensive. By the end of the first day, they were able to confirm that, unfortunately, my laptop was history. The motherboard had fried and would be cost prohibitive to replace. They did think my hard drive looked to be in good shape, but couldn't read it, as it was an SSD drive, without a special reader they had to order and would have in the next morning. The next morning, they got the reader as promised, plugged in my hard drive and called with the good news that all of my data was there. They gave me the reader with the hard drive inside, which could be plugged in via any new computer's USB port and the files transferred with no problem, for... $75. Out the door for $75. A lifetime of documents and photos, saved. So fair. I will not hesitate to use them again for computer issues (hopefully never again to include data recovery) or phone repairs, or to recommend them enthusiastically. Thank you, Jay and tech team!

My old Apple MacBook was exposed to water during a rainstorm while in my shoulder bag during a trip…read moreout of town. Once I returned home, I tried to power on the MacBook and nothing happened. It was able to take a charge (the light turned from orange to green), but the device was otherwise dead. Since I needed access to all of those old files not stored in the "cloud," I started looking for recovery services. Long story short, I dropped off my device in the storefront shop after making an online appointment, then I was quoted an exorbitant fee (like over $1,000) for recovery. These are not video files or anything complicated. I had to pay $37 to have my MacBook returned to me. Secure Data Recovery Services took out my SSD and then put it back in before returning. Total waste of time! Would not recommend, unless you like wasting time and money.

I had a hard drive crash in September 2013…read more It was my first experience with a crash, ever, and I foolishly chose the first company I happened to come across, thinking they would all be similar. I made such a poor choice. Overall I had experience with 4 different companies, and Data Retrieval was by far the worst. First, their website is very misleading. You pay $99 for a 24 hour diagnostic service, with a one week turnaround time. Most companies have similar turnaround times, though will diagnose your problem for free. After I submitted my drive and case, they quoted me about $3000 to fix the problem, which I thought was ludicrous. I later found out that this was in fact, very overpriced. They also offered a cheaper alternative of about $1600, but said the process would take 6-8 weeks. I took the cheaper price and was resolved to wait. I was very stressed at the time, and didn't realize how ridiculous it was. They said there was an 85-90% chance of recovering everything, and that they were very confident they would be able to do so, so I tried to relax. A few weeks in, I got in contact with them and founnd out that they hadn't even started to do any work. At 6 weeks in, I finally got an update, though no practical answer as to the actual condition of the drive. I was told to wait, and that they were still very confident they would retreive my data. 7 Weeks in, same update - just wait, we are confident. I would email my case worker, call and leave messages, and would never get a response. I could only talk to the receptionist, who could only give me vague answers. Over 8 weeks in. I call my case worker repeatedly, and instead of returning the call he finally sends me an email, saying they failed. When they shipped my drive back, they had to send it to a fedex store instead of my address due to a technicality with my billing information. The fedex store wasn't even a fedex store. It was some obscure packaging center that wasn't even associated with Fedex. I had to pay them $10 just to pick up my drive. Literally every other company I tried afterwards offered me a better price, had better customer service, faster turnaround times, and were simply easier to manage overall. 5 months later, I found out I'm being billed for an online server to backup data. What?! They had never provided any information regarding this service whatsoever. Apparently, it was all in the fine print. They refused to refund these charges, despite me having no knowledge that this thing even existed. The company name on my checking account wasn't even consistent with the others I had received. Their communication skills are terrible. Everyone who works there is some type of foreign. Their grammar skills within emails are full of spelling errors and mistakes. They do not communicate clearly, and do not give practical updates or advice. When I tried another company, I was shocked at how superior the service was in every way. People spoke to me clearly, gave me realistic expectations, and were very prompt and direct with their analysis. I was like night and day compared to these amateurs. DO NOT USE THEM! There are so many better options available... literally any alternative will suit you better.

The website is really helpful, it does list all the services you offer. However, it does take a…read morecouple of days for them to retrieve the data. Urgent service is really expensive. However, in the end, what mattered to me most was that my data should be available to me again! Which it was, and next time, I am never going to drink tea next to my laptop.

I called My Computer Whiz and Nouhoum got back to me within 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. He picked up my flashdrive that night, emailed me my most important file within 48 hours, and then by Thursday afternoon dropped off a brand new hard drive with the rest of the recovered data. Saved my life - I would have been screwed for my meeting if Nouhoum wasn't able to help!!!!

I can't tell whether these people are out and out con artists or whether they're just disorganized…read moreor what. I'm not even sure there's more than one person. His name is Nouhoum Cisse. Their website says: "All our laptop repair services are based on hourly rates or upfront flat labor rates which range from $85.00 to $180.00 plus the cost of parts if required. Since the price varies on different parts from different model computers, we'll provide you with a FREE upfront computer repair price quote within 24 hours." - http://www.mycomputerwiz.net/about-us/ When I gave my computer to Mr. Cisse to be repaired I asked for a receipt. He said he'd email me one, which he did but it was lacking in detail. I asked for an estimate of cost & time needed. As quoted above, that's something they guarantee within 24 hours. I didn't get that. I was patient, I waited 2 weeks without hearing anything further. I emailed asking what was happening. I got no reply. I waited ANOTHER 2 WEEKS & desperately asked what was happening & got a phone call apologizing & asking me if I'd gotten their "ticket". I said no and I was told that they have a new ticketing system that apparently wasn't working. The laptop was returned to me that day, there was no invoice. I plugged it in where I usually worked on it and it didn't seem any different from when I sent it in for repair. I tried phoning, texting, & emailing to alert My Computer Wiz of this & got no reply. Frustrated, I put a stop payment order on the check & informed them by email that I'd done so & why I'd done so. THEN I got a phone call. Mr. Cisse called me & came back to my house & gave me the check back. In the meantime, I'd disconnected external devices from my computer and tested it again and it seemed fine now. I concluded that either it HAD been fixed or that the problem had been with the external devices from the beginning. Apologetic, I wrote another check out for the same amount. Weeks later, I was told that THAT check had been refused payment at the bank that both My Computer Wiz and I use. Apparently, they had misapplied the Stop Payment to the wrong check. I called the bank, they apologized and said they'd correct it. They didn't. Mr. Cisse claimed that the bank had charged him $40 because of this. The bank told me that either they would reimburse My Computer Wiz directly or I could reimburse him and the bank would reimburse me. I wrote out a THIRD check for the original amount and another one for the supposed bank charge. I asked for receipts from Mr. Cisse. That took entirely too long. The bank then started getting very cagey. They wanted to know where My Computer Wiz is located. I told them that I thought they have an office in Cranberry. Looking online I see they claim to have two offices but that both are only available "by appointment only". Furthermore, they only have ONE phone number between them - which happens to be Mr. Cisse's cell-phone. I found that suspicious. The bank denies that they have a $40 fee and even though I provided them with everything they asked for as proof of payment to My Computer Wiz they are denying me reimbursement. I finally got an invoice from My Computer Wiz and it's very vague. In the end, I'm not even sure they repaired the computer, their price seems basically made up, their charge for the bank fee appears false, and I'm not sure there's even a business with multiple employees. I'm still dealing with them seven weeks after they got my computer but I'll never hire them again. I know that they lost their account with my workplace and I see online that at least one other person is accusing them of fraud. BEWARE! Mr. Cisse is very friendly but then so are con artists in general, right?
