We have eaten here twice on our way across SD. The food is excellent. We had burgers, hot fries, and shakes. The place was busy on a Friday about 7:30, but we waited outside and they brought the food to us. I enjoyed the rhubarb shake, which was clearly homemade rhubarb. Driving through the gateway to the American West, my family came upon the Murdo Drivein through some online I-90 restaurant searching. Luckily my I-pad came through and found enough Internet coverage to direct us to this little gem. Enjoyed a pizza burger (had better but not bad), BLT (good bacon), and some delectable cream corn poppers along with some fine burgers. The star of the show was the rhubarb sundae. Great tang, not too sugary, stewed rhubarb sauce. An old fruit Midwest treat that's only in season this time of the year! Side note - usually I am an extremely healthy person. Stopped in on our way to Sheridan, WY. The reviews sounded good so we thought we'd check it out. Definitely a Great place to stop for lunch! I had the grass fed beef cheeseburger, which was good but didn't have much flavor (typical for grass fed beef vs corn fed). I would get it again though. Murdo Drive-In had just opened for the 2017 season, and are we glad they did! We stopped for lunch based on its great Yelp reviews. When we pulled into the parking lot at about 12:30 pm, the large parking lot was filled and we worried that it would be too crowded/no place to sit since it was too cold to sit outside. No fear! Despite earlier reviewers indicating the sitting was limited, we found a few open tables and no line. The owner took our order and it was clear she was very proud of the food she served. We had the grass=fed burgers with cheese, lettuce & tomato, the highly rated broccoli bites, and a side salad. Everything was absolutely delicious! I'll start with the star -- the grass-fed burger: juicy, hot, coarsely-ground meat, great flavor. The fixings were fresh, crisp, and plentiful. The broccoli bites were a yummy, breaded broccoli floret -- a tasty treat. Even the simple salad of romaine lettuce and chopped fresh tomatoes with a balsamic vinegarette was really good and better than a lot of dinner salads I've been served. The owner repeatedly checked to make sure we were enjoying our food, and even brought a free serving of the smoked gouda mac & cheese bites, just so we could try them! Close to Interstate 90, we whole-heartedly recommend you make a stop at Murdo Drive-In -- a wonderful example of friendly, local, and fresh food. read more

Found this gem on our way out to Lead, nice stop for a bite to eat. Enjoyed bacon cheese burgers, earthquake cyclone (similar to a blizzard), fries and mac and cheese bites. Try adding the Mac and cheese bites on your burger--super good !! Superb place to stop for a bite. The restaurant is very clean (including the bathrooms), the service was very kind, and the food was great. I had the garden salad with grilled chicken - it was romaine and loads of fresh veggies. My family had the corn dogs, grilled cheese, and the bacon and cheese grilled chicken sandwich with fries. All I can say is Wow-if you ever find yourself in the backside of Nowhere, do yourself a favor and stop here! We liked it so much, we stopped back in on our, way back home. Get the grass finished burger- ours came with homegrown tomato slices (seasonal, I am sure). Dont go here! The smoke filled dining room when I entered was the first thing I noticed. I had my daughter order our food as fast as she could. After 15 minutes of waiting we found out the 16 or 17-year-old girl who took our order had given it to the wrong customers. As I was looking through the glass at her taking other orders I could see her playing on her phone while interacting with other customers. . After having to wait 25 minutes all together for a new order I had decided to Ask my daughter to get Our money back but they just gave her ice cream while they finished packing up a new order . If you have any sort of respiratory problems, have been near burn pits in the past, or just like to breathe clean air while you are eating do not go into the lobby area. If you go to this restaurant and a tall, dark complected 16 or 17-year-old girl comes to wait on you, just turn around and leave. I would call the state health regulatory board and have them shut down for poor air quality, but I would hate for the two good employees (an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl) to lose their jobs. We spent the next 15-20 minutes trying to find my rescue inhaler in one of our travel bags and didn't even eat any of the food before it went bad (never found it because I hadn't needed it in the last three years until today) read more

Nice hidden gem in small town South Dakota! We just came for a treat at the end of the day, but the menu included many other food items, most notably broasted chicken. By far the best surprise was the rhubarb topping ice cream Sunday. I've never seen this as an option anywhere else and it was delicious. This is about as honest and awesome as restaurants get. It's an American burger joint the way they should be, and the way I assume they used to be. Fresh, handmade beef patties, fresh lettuce, onion and pickles on a no-frills bun that clearly arrived the same day. Fried mac and cheese bites (!!!) and a real (seriously, with actual chunks of) rhubarb shake with vanilla wafers blended in. Add in the smiling girls behind the counter who were not only excited to serve us 15 minutes AFTER closing but treated my dog to a free dish of vanilla soft serve, and I felt like I'd traveled back in time to the 50's. This is fast food that's so far beyond "fast food", it makes you wonder what to call whatever it is Ronald and The King are doing. If I'm ever here again I will definitely stop by. read more

Based on the full parking lot and line upon entering, I knew we probably made a good choice. In rural South Dakota you're not going to find many options for miles on end. Even if there were, this stop is a delight! Driving form the Badlands east, Dad and I were hungry for lunch. Trusty yelp pointed us towards Murdo.... or back to Rapid City. Since we weren't headed there, we locked in on Murdo. This was the only establishment with excellent ratings and reviews. Small menu, but covers all the basics and there is something for everyone (if my gluten free mom had been with us, she could have had gluten free bread!). I ordered the grass fed burger and fries, Dad the garden salad and broasted chicken. My burger was clearly hand packed, flavored well and cooked well. Juicy tomato and lettuce- yum! Fries were fine - nothing exciting but I love French fries. Dads garden salad has EVERYTHING put of the garden and was huge! Chicken also decent sized for a breast and yummy clearly fresh not frozen. Lunch cost under $20 for the two of us - always a win. I went back and got a small shake and a baby sized soft serve cone for $5. All in all- WAY better than your fast food options you may encounter on the road, and worth the stop! read more
