We came to this place after mapping to a different restaurant in the area. We got seated right away but had to wait a little bit for our server to come over (they were busy). We ordered appetizers because our waitress said the kitchen was backed up and those would come out first. We got our appetizers right away and they were very good! We waited a little bit for our food but when we got our food it was very good. Big portions and everyone in our party (of 4) enjoyed what they got to eat and a lot of it. My family said if the service was improved on they would give it a solid 4 stars!!! read more

I just so happened to end my 11 hours in the town of Murdo SD again... this time I parked my truck at Rusty Spurs Steakhouse... I went inside and had every intention of ordering the Rib Eye and was told about the special Smoked Barbecue Brisket... the price for the plate was just as tasty as the dish sounded.. it came out looking like it was ready to be devoured... a mob of fries came with it... I got to meet the chef this time Terrell and thanked him for the great meals I've had... this place is a great place to stop and eat... so three beers later and a second sandwich I waddled back to the truck and passed out... i had a great meal and can't talk highly enough about the manager and chef... great guys doing a great job running this fine restaurant... kudos... and thanks again.. cheers! read more

What a great Steakhouse. We enjoyed the Whiskey Steak Tips with fries and extra veggies. Melissa was our server. She did an excellent job taking care of us. There was no wait time and our meal came out in less than 10 minutes. The steak was prepared perfectly. The veggies were great too. Give them a try. Next time we are passing through Murdo we'll eat here again. The manager checked on us too. Great experience all around. read more

If this place had billboards on the interstate It'd be so much more busy, I wasn't expecting a delicious steak off the freeway in South Dakota, but this was a welcome meal after hours of driving. Order the ribeye you won't be disappointed. I like that the Diet Cokes come in aluminum cups too kinda cool. read more

Nice little place in a small town with friendly staff. We came in in the evening super hungry after driving all day. We were a bit worried that there was a sign on the door about being extremely understaffed and to have patience. Well it turns out these ladies really handled things pretty quickly and things were done nicely and on time. I ordered just a grilled cheese and fries because I am not a big eater and my daughter had the whiskey tips and fries. Nice size portions of fries, big sandwich and adequate meat portion. All were tasty. The restaurant itself is cute and decor was western ranch style with nice wood. Clean place and restrooms. Would stop here again if traveling through. read more

While on our west coast roadtrip, we took a gamble on where to have dinner and chose the Rusty Spur based on its name and menu. It turned out to be good bet. We knew when to hold em and when to fold em. The kids liked the mac and cheese and corn dog nuggets. The adults liked their burgers. My buffalo burger was a little dry but that was expected due to buffalo's lower fat content. The onion rings were a little too oily and slightly soggy. Really loved the decor. read more

Remembering that this is a very very small town with very very limited resources.... We stop over in Murdo, SD every year traveling from NC to our MT summer cabin. Last year, the new owner had revamped the interior and upgraded the menu. We were pleasantly surprised! We love the Murdo experience so much that we planned out trip around staying in Murdo and eating at this restaurant. The food is fresh, hot and the portions are GENEROUS!! Today, June 5, 2022 we stopped in again and were waited on by an exemplary young man named Teto (spelling?) from Jamaica. He and his friends are in Murdo on a work program waiting tables at the Rusty Spur. NEVER have I had such attentive service. He was so polite and made sure we had our drinks refilled and the bill came promptly! In 2022, that is so rare. He seemed just so happy for the opportunity to work there. Although I never met the owner, I am in total love with him (or her) for bringing this opportunity to such deserving young men. Win win situation. Great servers and great opportunity for these young men. read more

Rusty Spur Steakhouse - The Rusty Spur - Steakhouses Near Me - Murdo, South Dakota

We stopped here on Jan 1, 2019 around 9pm. Barely anywhere was open and we had lowered our standards for good food and service out of hunger. We couldn't have been happier! The waiter was extremely friendly and checked on us often. We ordered fried pickles - delicious! I got the crispy chicken sandwich and my husband got a regular burger. The chicken sandwich looked really fresh and large. His burger looked a little sad and deflated but he said it tasted really good. The French fries were really crispy and hot too. All of it was so much better than we had expected but I don't think it was just because we were hungry! read more

Both of our steaks were cooked to perfection!!! You need to stop by and support this new business, you will not be disappointed. The sides were as good as the main course. read more

Best food we had in South Dakota! My husband had the Cowboy Slop (a stack of mashed potatoes, breaded chicken bites, corn, peppermill gravy and cheese) and I had the whiskey steak tips. The sign at the hostess waiting area said staff shortage and could be extremely long waiting times. I appreciated the forewarning however that was not the case. We were seated, order taken for drinks. Returned with drinks and took our order. The food was brought out in about 10 minutes and was hot and delicious. We both ordered the country slop. One we finished she cleared our table and brought the bill over. Exceptional staff and food! read more

Food was ok. Not great but decent. It was so bright. Turn the lights down it's not McDonald's. And they say that they are open until 11:00 but the waitstaff started putting the chairs on the tables before 10:00. Even as they seated new tables. That's super uninviting. Close at 10:00 if you don't want to continue to serve. read more

This place is amaze-balls. I had the western French dip with beef brisket. Never have I ever! So Smokey and delicious. Yum! Staff is exceptionally friendly and the prices are right. Cool cedar wood decor and all brandy new. Definitely recommend! read more

Very good food, big portions!! I had country fried steak with mashed potatoes and country gravy and it was very good. Fiancée had the chicken bacon ranch wrap and the thing looked like a king burrito when it came out. There was a ton of meat in it too!! Nice place with friendly atmosphere and solid food. Too many TVs for my taste, but hey...

Well at least it looked like it would be 5 star based on the decor. Unfortunately for us they were having heating issues and weren't open.

We stopped in on our way on a cross country road trip. The service was good and staff was fun. Got seated by the back windows so got to watch a big storm role in while we were there. The food was good and plenty. Hubby had Rocky Mountain oysters that were good (I had 1/2 of one, it's an acquired enjoyment). I had a steak that was very good, husband had a Buffalo steak that was not so good but it's more a flaw in Buffalo meat than the cook (it tends to be drier and more bland than beef). All I all was a good stop! read more

Wow when there great food server was great. We asked for popcorn to be made fresh. Just a very cool place with great food. Was there twice in same day. Loved both times read more

I wish I could say something better about this place. The town of Murdo touts it's friendliness. They must have used it all up elsewhere, because our bartender/server had none. Service was slow and inattentive, even though there were hardly any other customers while we were there. We were looking for a steakhouse while traveling through beef country, and had high expectations for this place. Unfortunately, 1/3 of the menu was unavailable. I got the rib-eye, and it was good. I finished eating and was ready for an after dinner drink, but our server crept up from behind and tossed our bill onto the bar next to me. No words or anything. I guess we were done . I just wasn't feeling the place. I didn't feel welcome. Shame. read more

The cheeseburger was delicious as were the fries and baked beans. Gift it a try. I don't think you will be sorry.

Don't waste your time here!! We have eaten here numerous times and we should know better. Food takes forever to come out and they are always understaffed. We had two very nice waitresses last night but they were so overworked that they could not bus our table and we sat with dirty dishes pushed off to the side throughout our meal. Too bad! read more

This place is great. We came into Murdo one evening right before a blizzard and we're so hungry and Rustys was the only place we could find. What a little treasure. We traveled a long day and happened upon this late (For us) - around 9 PM. They were super busy, but we did not wait on a table. Service was a little slow, but since we are reasonable people - we realize that a busy restaurant in the middle of nowhere might be. The food was incredible and for what we got - a great value. Our family collectively had a burger with American Fries (Don't even bother with french - they were awesome), the steak tips, which my picky teenager says were the best thing she ate on our road trip. Husband had the hamburger steak and I had the open faced beef sandwich which was just so good after a long day on the road. Don't pass it by, and not just because there aren't a lot of places to stop along the way. We loved it! read more

We are in town for vacation and decided to eat here. The food was over priced and service was horrible. I had to get up and pretty much serve myself since the waitress was to worried about serving beer at the bar. Needless to say I wouldn't waste my time or money here again. read more

Traveling from Omaha to Mount Rushmore, we had the opportunity to stop in Murdo, SD. The Rusty Spur was recommended by the hotel staff and looked OK on Yelp, so we decided to give it a try. The people are friendly and the menu has a varied selection of steaks, chicken and shrimp. I will warn you right now, go hungry. The servings are the size of Western Montana. The plates are plentiful with food. They abound. They are overflowing. You will not leave hungry. You get the picture. They have a wide selection of beers. We went with a couple of Modelo Especials and a Stella. We were not really aware of the portion sizes so ordered a starter salad and a main. The starter salad is self served from the salad bar. It was pretty good, with the standard salad bar offerings, all fresh ingredients. The potato salad option looked rich, so I didn't even give it a go. One of our party did and said it was tasty and very rich. I had the open faced shaved rib eye with potatoes and gravy. It was pretty good as well as plentiful. My wife had the Whiskey Steak Tips, one of their specialties. It was quite tasty with a nice tang, definitely worth getting again. Our third person ordered a chicken dish, I think it was called Cowboy Chicken Slop, but I'm not sure now. It had fried chicken, white gravy all over bread and a sprinkling of cheese. It was H-U-G-E. The place kept getting busier as our meal progressed, so this is definitely a popular spot for dinner in town. The service was good and the people were really friendly. If you're in Murdo, give the Rusty Spur a try, but go hungry! read more

Ugh! Service was very slow. Drinks limited. Salad was good, so the entree was a real shock - terrible cut of meat. Supposedly a ribeye, but mostly fat and gristle. On top of that, it was so over seasoned as to be inedible. Awful. read more

My family happened upon this restaurant traveling and what a treat it was! Our food was so delicious. Son had a mashed potato bowl and we had their veggie salad. Both were huge and yummy. Best salad we have had in a long time. And the meal was made perfect by the excellent service we received from Jessie our waiter. He could not have been more attentive to our needs and pleasant to visit with. Between the great food and excellent service I can say without a doubt we will eat here again. So glad my husband and I stopped here for dinner. The food was delicious and decently price especially for a place that seemed to be abandoned. I don't think you can find a better area than this place. And if your a fan of country music this is definitely the place for you! We had the hot n spicy and the pepper joe burger. Both were thick and juicy and loaded with fries :) Best believe you won't be hungry after you leave this place! read more

We took a gamble and stopped in on a road trip, based solely on their billboards, and had a great experience. We split the 16 oz ribeye, which was quite good and still too much food for two of us. The meal included a trip to the classic salad bar, which I always love (pickled beets! cottage cheese!) To top it off, our server was incredibly nice. Our gamble definitely paid off. read more

We walked in seconds before a huge tour bus pulled in. We asked our server if we could immediately place our order so we wouldn't be sitting there all night. ( we had looked at the menu prior). He said yes, and 27 minutes later had not even come back with water. I get that they got busy fast, but then just tell us that we are going to be out of luck & tour buses come first. So. One star and they don't even deserve that. The least they could have done was told us that ordering within 30 seconds of arriving was a waste of time. So, it could be a good place. I guess we will never know. If you see a tour bus here, go to Circle E down the street. They were super nice, we got our food in a decent amount of time & the food was pretty good. read more

I was prepared for it, hoping for the best, but we walked in with two tables with bills and tips still on them, three with dirty dishes on them, two with cleaning cloths on them. I wanted to leave right then but the kids didn't want to walk the 5 minutes to the restaurant we ended up at. So the customer next to the table we were eying up ended up wiping the table for us. We were greeted by the one harried waiter, "be right with you." So not true. He was swamped. We checked out the salad bar (sad) and I tried to get the bartender's attention (she ignored me and left the bar.) I saw where she had put down some menus so I went behind the bar and grabbed them. Meanwhile people kept streaming in and some of them the waiter actually started serving those that came in after us. My last straw was when I saw him behind the bar pouring drinks, the bartender nowhere in sight. Convinced everyone to leave, this was about 20 minutes into our adventure. We had a great experience at the Covered Wagon five minutes down the road! read more
