This is a solid choice for local dining. I will begin by saying the exterior of this building gave me pause. I have walked into a few 'less than friendly' establishments in my life and the exterior gave me that vibe. Thankfully, inside is a warm and delightful business with plenty of food options and stiff drinks at a fair price. No beer on tap, but a fair variety in cans. Definitely a space to bring the family, there are two dining areas. One to the right is a long narrow space with booths on the front side and tables in a variety of four and six seating configurations. Decor is wildlife pictures and dark paneling. No windows. To the left of the entrance is the bar and another grouping of dining tables. Parking is on three sides of the building and there are no designated parking spaces. Just be sure you and others can get in and out. The building entrance is street side. There is no awning or anything to let you know 'this is the one'. The menu has a kids section for the young ones. The regular Saturday special was prime rib w/a salad, roll, potato and dessert. So much food! They also offer a couple of ground buffalo meat meals along with sandwiches and entrees. We went with lighter fare and found a side salad order gives you one walk up to the salad bar. They also have a soup & salad bar meal option. As in most other restaurants we've encountered on our travels through the area, the salad base is a bagged iceberg lettuce mix. There were plenty of toppings and salad dressings to choose. My mushroom swiss burger was tasty as were the onion rings. The burger was well cooked and not greasy. Real onions in a tempura style batter had a nice flavor and crunch. Our waitress was pleasant with all the guests and she kept a close eye on us. We had our drinks in good time and the food came in an expected amount of time. Pay at the register by the door on your way out. There's a basket of candy just behind you there (I had a butterscotch. Yum!) and toothpicks are available in a dispenser on the counter. Feel weird giving it 5 stars. It deserves 10. Sidney (Sydney?) best hostess. Waitress. Busser. She was doing it all while in the weeds (Restaurant speak for slammed busy). Smiling. Cracking jokes. Juggling all of us and keeping a full dining room happy. Steaks? Perfect. Onion rings? Delish. Chili? Fresh made. Drinks? Cheap as heck. The Friday night we were in Mardi, this restaurant was the only game in town. They were very busy, but we enjoyed our 30-minute wait with drinks in the bar. The special was Prime Rib. It was amazing flavor and large serving. The French fries were some of the best I've ever had. There used to be a great salad and soup bar. The liver and onions that you be in our party had was great (I hear), but suggests ordering extra onions. Another had fried shrimp, which was really good and there was plenty. This is an old restaurant and bar, but don't let that keep you from stopping in for a great tasting dinner! read more

If you're not from the area, don't bother stopping in. We're moving across the country and I'd expect really quaint hospitality from this place and area but the whole experience was downhill from parking outside to leaving. The service was rude, short, and ignorant. More worried about some random tomato crop discussion among regular patrons than serving people, it was so hard to get someone's attention. They were out of several items we asked about like the salad bar, any salad or green veggie, and they don't serve baked potato as a potato option but they have onion rings as a potato option (?). There aren't a lot of options in Murdo but if we lived here we would likely eat here regularly. It's your standard small town bar with steaks and drinks and that locals vibe. There is a dining room and a bar. Small salad bar with an assortment of salads that didn't look super fresh but the lettuce and boiled eggs and dressings were good. We ordered the Rib Eye steak which was a large serving that cane with soup and salad bar, baked potato and an ice cream sundae which was a nice touch. The steak was cooked well however it lacked seasoning. Easily fixed with a salt shaker. The service was great however and we felt like we got our moneys worth. My son and I had stopped by to get food before continuing on our journey. Unfortunately we felt so uncomfortable and unwanted. Everyone was staring at us and nosy wanted to help us. I do not know if this was because of our Hispanic heritage or they were truly "behind" as another had told us before giving us a scowl. All we wanted was to eat and be on our way. Great dinner, good cocktails and a nice little salad bar. I ordered the walleye grilled fish dinner and it was tender and delicious. We were just staying over in town for one night on our way back home to IL. We don't get fish like this back home so I was very pleased. Overall pretty good food! We had a group of 13 and the server was great about it. Some of us got chicken tenders, some got burgers, and one brave person got the buffalo burger. Food was good. Our Server was AWFUL! Stopped in with another family on our way thru South Dakota heading home after a two week road trip. We had just crossed the time zone line so instead of 7:30, it was 8:30 pm. I called ahead to see if they could accommodate a party of 12 and was told yes. When we arrived our waitress was openly irritated, stating when she was told she was getting a party of 12 she didn't think it would all be children. We had 6 adults in our party. She blatantly ignored us the entire time. I had to go to the waitress stand to get napkins and more water because she would not even look our way. She had just three other tables. I had to get up and get her to ask for our desserts that were supposed to come with our meals. She finally brought our checks, we sat there for 10 minutes waiting for her to take our credit cards, but she never returned, so we ended up leaving cash on the table and leaving. read more

It's been many many years since I've been here, so it's probably changed since then. I believe it was in 2002 or 2003, when we tried to stop at a hotel in Rapid City, but couldn't due to Stergis, so we had to drive all the way out to Murdo, SD to find the closest available hotel. This was pretty much the only restaurant in town, so we decided to give it a try. What really made this place memorable was the buffalo burgers. They were definitely unique, from a city slicker like myself, and was tender. After reading the reviews below, we decided to try "the Buffalo"... to see for ourselves. The special of the night was 3 pieces of beer-battered cod with soup & salad bar, choice of potato, and an ice cream sundae. (I only wanted a small vanilla ice cream, but was persuaded to let them add a bit of creme de menthe on top!) I do not normally eat fried foods so am not a judge of quality...but it was quite adequate if not gourmet...and...at $13.50 per dinner, I'd say we definitely got a good deal!! Hard to beat! In regards to the reviews of the people who thought this restaurant might be closed, this was in the middle of May and there were plenty of cars in the parking lot...one of the factors that convinced us. My partner and I had a very satisfying experience at this restaurant, yesterday, on a Friday evening. Both the restaurant and bar were fairly busy at 8 PM. The two women working the restaurant could not have been friendlier or more helpful and attentive. Our entrees came with access to the soup and salad bar. The salad bar was delightfully old fashioned and well tended. The tomato soup was one of the best ever. Being from out of state, we both ordered Walleye and a baked potato. Both were perfectly cooked and arrived in short order. The restaurant provides its patrons with a small cup of vanilla ice cream at the end of the meal. You can choose a chocolate sauce, but we went retro and had it covered with creme de menthe. Do yourself a favor and have a meal here. It looked kind of scary from the outside but I'm glad we braved it! It probably has not been updated in 20 years but the dining room was clean and comfortable. The waitress was friendly and gave great service. I am picky about the quality of service and food! The salad bar was small, but everything was fresh and tasted good. Yelp map directs you to a billboard not the restaurant. Exit on Rt 83, go west on 5th street. Almost to the next access to I-90. Linda in the bar was very hospitable and friendly. Madison was our server in the restaurant. Great service. Reasonable priced meals. Great beef n noodle soup, nice salad bar. We enjoyed our dinners. However, the French dip sandwich was made from a tender, slow roasted hunk of juicy beef layered with some of the best caramelized onions I've ever tasted. He daughter, who may be mentally challenged, was trying to help but hadn't a clue of what she was doing. They messed up multiple orders and the old lady owner actually told one of us to shut up when we asked where an order was that we waited 1 hour for. Not a lot of dining choices in Murdo and unfortunately this had a number of negative reviews but was recommended by the hotel. I noted that the negative reviews were mainly from groups of 15 or 20 people who stopped in either without prior notice or late in the evening so after a delightful meal there I could see why. This is not a big place with one cook and one waiter so trying to please 20 people at once could be a challenge. I must say our dinner for two was delightful. The salad bar looks small but has about everything including in addition to the normal salad items, slaw, fruit, potato and macaroni salads. The homemade beef and noodle soup was delicious. I had the special chopped steak with onions and hash browns and my wife had the steak sandwich with fries. Both the chopped steak and steak sandwich were cooked to absolute perfection. The meat could have used a touch more seasoning but the cook was perfect. My wife's fries were excellent crispy on the outside and soft in. My hash browns were standard diner fare and just average.
