Wow, what a cool place this is. You can really tell that the people who put in their time and energy into bringing this place back from the brink truly care about what they were doing. There's nothing ostentations about the Circle Cinema, it just feels like a really old theater that has adapted to fit perfectly into the 21st century. The seats are comfortable, all the people selling tickets and snacks were super kind. It was raining when I showed up and I had ridden my bike in, I asked if there were any indoor bike racks to lock up at. There weren't - but the guys inside offered to just let me put it in the corner and they would keep an eye on in while I was watching my film. Totally kind. A couple of small things to note when I was there. First, the theater was insanely cold. I never mind a cool theater, but I had a coat on and still felt myself shivering throughout. The projection seemed a little on the dark side, but not terrible. The seats are really comfortable but the folks behind me kept managing to knock into my seats through out the film. I'm not sure if this is because they were obnoxious or the seats are a little too close to the rows in front of and behind them. Overall, probably the best place in Tulsa to see a movie. read more

Circle Cinema was built in 1928, and is the oldest Cinema in Tulsa. During the 80's the theatre lost some of it's luster, as a porn theatre. A fact that, in present day, only adds to it's colorfulness, charm, and history. Since the 2000s, the cinema has functioned as a non-profit. Rebuilding the cinema into something useable has been the ultimate goal. They currently have three screens(Large, Medium, Small). Specializing in Indie and foreign releases, the Circle fills a gap that Tulsa's had for a long time. Great vibe, great people. Tip: Check out the midnight movies- lots of fun/campy horror films, and cheesy 80's nostalgia flicks as well. Tip: Make sure and grab some of their private blend coffee and coffee beans while you're there. If they could figure out a way to sell alcoholic drinks(regularly)- we'd almost have our own little Alamo Drafthouse here in Tulsa. Thumbs up, always. read more

We freaking LOVED this theater and the experience of seeing a movie here! Next time we're in Tulsa, it will be a go-to destination. We had been at the Gilcrease all morning and were looking for movies we hadn't yet seen at home in central Arkansas. We didn't know anything about either theater that came up showing STILL ALICE except that this one looked closer to our hotel, and the time for the showing was convenient. We were so glad for that. This nonprofit theater shows many important and significant films for the purpose of social change and engagement. Besides having a great mission, it was a pleasure to visit this historic theater (built in the 1920s, I believe) and the artsy, interesting neighborhood around it. We were here in the afternoon, but it would be fun in the evening when the bars and restaurants are more active and energetic. We liked the theater very much. There is a pleasant, art-filled communal area, friendly staff and several screens. We parked on the street, but there is parking in back, as well. The seats were super comfortable, and the film was screened with quality. Everything about this outing was a pleasure. Kudos, Circle Cinema! You are a model for other cities! read more

Visited on: multiple dates from 2012 to present Circle Cinema is one of my favorite movie theaters ever. I would actually list it among the top five best things about Tulsa. I love unique and interesting movie theaters (so like, not the typical suburban/mall multiplexes), and this is definitely such a theater. Opened in 1928, this theater definitely has history, and you can see an old film projector (or a replica thereof) displayed in the lobby, as well as an exterior facade and marquee faithful to their historical look. Then there's the theater's biggest claim to fame - the Robert Morton theatre pipe organ that was originally installed at Circle Cinema in the late 1920s, and was restored in time to be played at the Circle's 86th Birthday Celebration on July 15 2014. No, the organ isn't the biggest and baddest I've heard, and it can't be because this is a fairly small theater. But it's a great asset for an already awesome theater to have, and it's unique for a theater in Tulsa, making Tulsa that much better of a city for having a place like this. There are three auditoriums: Theater #1, the largest and newest one (and the one housing the organ), Theater #2, the medium-sized one that I've been in more times than any other auditorium there, and Theater #3, the smallest one. The seating is quite comfortable, and while the screens aren't that big (it's a small theater, remember), the seating tends to be compressed forward enough so even sitting in the back rows allows the screen to fill or exceed one's entire field of vision. In fact, every time I'm in Theater #2 I have to sit in the very back row just to have the screen fit in my field of vision; if I sit in any other row I'll be too close to the screen. Theaters #1 and #3 don't have this same problem because they have longer seating areas (and Theater #1's screen is bigger); Theater #2 just has a really compressed seating area. All in all, I find the screen sizes for Theaters #1 and #2 to be quite good; the only screen that's too small for me is the one in Theater #3. None of the seating is stadium seating, but that's understandable given the sizes of the auditoriums. The picture and sound are usually good. The theater has an understated beauty both inside and outside. As I mentioned earlier, the facade is relatively new but it closely mimics the look it had back in the 1940s and 1950s. The interior is a mix of modern styling and exposed brick that still manages to look fresh. The theater stands as a model for near-perfect balance between old and new decor and styling. The lobby also has local artwork and old theatrical posters on display. Another major strength of this theater is the unique programming. They show movies few (or in many cases, no) other theaters in Oklahoma will. The regular programming is a mix of independent, art house, foreign and documentary films, but they also show older movies (as in, any movies that are done with their theatrical runs), sometimes for free. For example, they're currently doing an "Earth Matters Series" where they're showing a free nature/environment-related documentary every month; I went to the one for Gasland Part II in April 2014. In July 2014, they did a "Splatter U" double feature where they showed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), which I had been wanting to see for a long time, and Madman (1982), and then rewarded us devoted attendees with a nifty "Certificate of Completion" to keep as a souvenir. It's these kinds of quirky and thoughtful touches that make this theater stand out. The Circle isn't just some dead establishment that plays movies by rote; it's a community of people who want to interact with fellow movie lovers. Another thing I love about this theater is how they give out all these leaflets and fliers for the movies they play and the events they put on. Few theaters do this, and as a memento hoarder I appreciate it a lot. They also have a weekly email newsletter that helpfully lists what's playing in the upcoming week. One thing that's good to know is that Circle Cinema doesn't have a display of showtimes in its lobby; it only has paper leaflets with the showtimes on them. It's best to look up showtimes in advance on the website. Also, they're not entirely consistent in terms of when they start playing the actual movies; sometimes they start showing previews before the listed showtime and then start the feature presentation at or just a few minutes after the listed showtime. It's best to arrive at least ten minutes before the movie's showtime. The staff are friendly and accessible, though there used to be problems. On a few of my early visits, the projectionist was incompetent, and one time a staff member gave me a hard time because I came into the theater with a messenger bag (as I always do). The Circle Cinema is a Tulsa landmark! The Circle tends to show films not found in the big box theaters. Recently, I saw a documentary about Tulsa's history. It was great! The tickets are very reasonable and there is popcorn, drinks, and other concessions. There is a section of tables to enjoy your food before the movie, or you can also take it in with you. The staff is very nice and helpful. Although there is tons of charm at the Circle Cinema, it is small and in a not so great part of town. There are three theaters and I have only been in the smaller of the three. The theater was very packed and many people had trouble finding a seat. The seats are also not very comfortable. I think they probably over sold the movie. It made me nervous. Another nervous factor at the Circle is the location. I would never go to this theater alone, and luckily our movie was over before dark. Just be alert! I like the Circle Cinema. Great movies, great service. But, it does take some planning. The movies do not play at normal times or days, so make sure to check online before you make the trek to 10th and Lewis. Overall, a good time! read more

Very cool. The area is currently being revitalized and this is an excellent edition. Seats are good but not top notch like the others in the area offer, did I mention this is a nonprofit theater?, it is and it's worth it! Unique film selections, bar area, clean, and inexpensive. I can't get enough of this place! They have the best films that do not show anywhere else in town. Circle Cinema has a good variety of films and showings every day. It's small, personal, easy to get in and out of, not crowded unless it's an opening night, and the popcorn is fresh! I also just love that it's a non-profit and lots of the people there are volunteers. Be on the lookout for lectures and other fun events because they host them quite frequently! This is a Tulsa treasure. I've been visiting since my college days, and it's only gotten better as renovation and expansion have opened up new screens and a retro-style lobby. Ticket prices are reasonable (especially if you're a TU student--go on a Tuesday for $2), seats are comfortable, crowds are minimal, and the movie selection is wide-ranging. They'll show everything from foreign and indie films, to niche documentaries, to Oscar-nominated short films, to Shakespeare adaptations. Definitely a must-visit landmark for Tulsans. I really enjoy the Circle Cinema. For years, I would drive past this abandoned theatre just wishing I had the funds to renovate & re-open it. So, I'm happy someone was able to do what I couldn't. Tulsa definitely needed a proper independent theatre to showcase the films that deserve a more intimate setting than one finds at the larger movie houses. The seats are comfortable. I drive up here from Edmond ( about 100 miles ), because they get films no one else does within four or five states! Seriously, I didn't know what to expect, but it's a nice cinema, with up to date digital projection, riser ( not quite stadium ) seating, with great sound. One thing I really liked was that the screen was pretty close to the seats, which changes your relationship to the movie. I love looking up at a large, close screen. This place hasn't been around that long. I hope people find it and come often, because I want them to keep getting the films that they are. read more

Love the small intimate setting of this theater, and the history. My husband & I prefer over the big movie theaters in town.

We have been to approximately 4-5 movies at Circle Cinema in the past 18-24 months. Our experience is typically ok. Theatres and restrooms are very clean, sound system and quality of viewing is good. Minor issue with having to wait in the ticket line even though we purchased tickets in advance on-line. Last Saturday we went to the Cinema to see the movie Dunkirk. I was particularly excited because I heard from a few people what a great movie it was and my wife actually agreed to go see a war movie with me! We once again purchased our tickets online (I was hopeful they improved the check-in process . . . . they had not). We arrived in the theatre just in time for the start of the movie. The theatre was one of the larger ones, very clean, and with a good sound system. Unfortunately our movie experience changed about half through as the projector system went down. After waiting five minutes, the crowd realized no one was in the projector room dealing with the issue. Someone went out to inform them. Another 5 minutes went by and I decided to take a real break and use the restroom. On my way back into the movie, I commented to the young man at the counter that they should considering giving everyone a movie pass on their way out of the movie. He indicated that he didn't think that was necessary as everyone was quietly waiting for the system to be fixed. I said it would be a gesture of good customer experience and serve as an apology for the unintended delay. He again said it wasn't necessary but did indicate he could "take care of me". I let him know that was not necessary as I quickly realized he could not relate to my point. By the time I returned, the projector problem was repaired and we settled back in to watch the rest of the movie. This was not as easy as one would think due to the fact that they left the house lights on in the theatre. After about 2 minutes, I woman got up and went out to inform them. It was smooth sailing for another 30 minutes or so until about 15 minutes left in the movie. At that point, the film jammed and this time melted a hole in the frame. After about five minutes, a young man came in and informed the crowd that they could not fix it this time and that they would "take care of everyone". A line soon formed at the concession stand and Circle Cinema was gracious enough to hand write on a card that the holder was entitled to a free movie. I felt bad for the people at the end of the line as this was a very lengthy process. I was also amazed that they felt just removing the cost of the experience we all wish we never had was the right solution. This would be like a restaurant manager giving you a 20% off your next purchase to make up for a botched dinner outing. On the upside, at least the movie was a historical piece, so who needed to see the ending anyway! read more

The Circle Cinema is a Tulsa Treasure. The major renovations are finished now, and they have added extremely comfortable seating and large screens (and extra bathrooms). It is the only theater in the area that presents films that would not be seen in Oklahoma if not for the Circle, and they often have interviews with the directors or stars of some of these films. I'm so sold on the Circle Cinema because I used to come here as a child to watch the Saturday matinee, and it saddened me to see it go downhill for a while. But I have watched as they have done an incredible job of rejuvenating this theater. I love the fact it is locally owned and locally operated, and can show things that those big box theaters can't or won't, especially locally made or politically controversial films. I support it as much as I can because I don't want it to go the way of Steve's Book Store. We need the Circle, but more importantly, the Circle needs us! read more
