So, we didn't experience any issues with buying or obtaining tickets and seats. It had been years since I attended. The last time was the Woody Guthrie Centennial concert. That was a slick and highly organized affair and I thought this venue was the perfect place for the celebration. This time, it was not as slick or organized but it was a heartfelt event and I thought the staff was great. We definitely needed help finding our seats and they were great. (Floor, barely left of stage about six rows back.) I was a little surprised at the lobby and the "concession" area--very much in need of some sprucing up perhaps. It's still a historic venue and I think we're lucky to have it (along with Cain's) in Tulsa. I would definitely attend another event here and plan to.

So I wound up ordering online and thanks to their usurious service charges via Etix, it cost me almost enough money to buy a fourth ticket. They have Tulsa by the short hairs, and they know it, and they don't care. The place itself is old, tired, rundown and cramped. Yeah, I know the whole 'historic' vibe thing, but that doesn't matter when I'm cramped in a kiddie sized folding chair that was probably new when Enrico Caruso sang there. For the prices they charge, there's no excuse for the crappy service and environment.

They cater eclectic and queer (in its 'unconventional' meaning) in addition to comedic and quirky, providing entertainment that can be thought- and emotion-provoking as much as, or sometimes more so, than the fare you may find at a conventional, city-claimed performing arts center. The setting is intimate and raw. They do not scare aware easily from controversial performances, and that makes them precious. Some stories just need a safe venue in which to be shared, and they do every one differently with their own bootstrapping, unique style. Everything from a monologue performance of one person's experience with religion to burlesque shows. Others include Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School drawing sessions; musical theater; political dramas; costume parties; crowd-participation comedies; abstract, experimental performance art; underground musical performances; and not to mention they throw an annual Baconfest fundraiser to support their independent local arts AND a Ms. Center of the Universe Pageant that is an in-your-face, snarky, flip of the finger to patriarchal dictation of womanhood.
