So, we didn't experience any issues with buying or obtaining tickets and seats. It had been years since I attended. The last time was the Woody Guthrie Centennial concert. That was a slick and highly organized affair and I thought this venue was the perfect place for the celebration. This time, it was not as slick or organized but it was a heartfelt event and I thought the staff was great. We definitely needed help finding our seats and they were great. (Floor, barely left of stage about six rows back.) I was a little surprised at the lobby and the "concession" area--very much in need of some sprucing up perhaps. It's still a historic venue and I think we're lucky to have it (along with Cain's) in Tulsa. I would definitely attend another event here and plan to.

So I wound up ordering online and thanks to their usurious service charges via Etix, it cost me almost enough money to buy a fourth ticket. They have Tulsa by the short hairs, and they know it, and they don't care. The place itself is old, tired, rundown and cramped. Yeah, I know the whole 'historic' vibe thing, but that doesn't matter when I'm cramped in a kiddie sized folding chair that was probably new when Enrico Caruso sang there. For the prices they charge, there's no excuse for the crappy service and environment.

They cater eclectic and queer (in its 'unconventional' meaning) in addition to comedic and quirky, providing entertainment that can be thought- and emotion-provoking as much as, or sometimes more so, than the fare you may find at a conventional, city-claimed performing arts center. The setting is intimate and raw. They do not scare aware easily from controversial performances, and that makes them precious. Some stories just need a safe venue in which to be shared, and they do every one differently with their own bootstrapping, unique style. Everything from a monologue performance of one person's experience with religion to burlesque shows. Others include Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School drawing sessions; musical theater; political dramas; costume parties; crowd-participation comedies; abstract, experimental performance art; underground musical performances; and not to mention they throw an annual Baconfest fundraiser to support their independent local arts AND a Ms. Center of the Universe Pageant that is an in-your-face, snarky, flip of the finger to patriarchal dictation of womanhood.

Their Christmas play is coming up next weekend and they're doing the Velveteen Rabbit and Pollyanna next year! The Drunkard & The Olio is the historic and longest-running play in the U.S. It started in 1953 and has never stopped. Performances are on Saturdays at 7:30pm. It's an interactive play with lots of audience engagement. The building itself is and feels historic. It's easy to notice on riverside due to its white and tall facade. I reached out to them about doing a private event and Lauren, their operations manager was extremely helpful. She graciously scheduled a time to give me a tour of the space and shared all sorts of great history facts about the space. I believe they'll be launching an campaign to raise funds for renovations, which is exciting! A group of very dedicated volunteers makes all the magic happen. I'm excited about what's to come for this organization!

When we learned they have the same play all the time, we didn't think we'd go back after seeing it once. We plan to go back many times. It's not a play in which the plot is important. It's an experience. It's a perfect play to give the audience that kind of experience. Why change it. I want to take my grandchildren there. We can be kids again with them. You laugh, you sing, cheer, you boo, and you throw tomatoes at the villain. We loved it and will return.
