I'm an older native Tulsan and grew up in and around Tulsa and first became aware of Leon Russell when I was about 12 years old. It's an amazing original building, made even better with the expansion and update. The people who work and volunteer there are awesome!! One of my best friends, who I met at age 16, was a roadie for Leon back when Tulsa's own GAP Band was his backing band. I was blessed to see a lot of shows backstage as a result of knowing him--Joe Walsh, REO Speedwagon, and ZZ Top to name a few. This past, along with seeing the facility, called me to be there. So, now I'm a volunteer docent and have loved every minute! They do an amazing job promoting the Tulsa music scene and keeping the Tulsa Sound that Leon and company created alive and thriving! If you haven't been and are a music lover you HAVE to check it out!! It's an active recording studio, and they even have an educational foundation where young people can learn how to become a sound engineer. They host Tunes At Noon on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and sometimes on Friday and I've already seen some INCREDIBLE talent perform there!! I'm elated that Tulsa has finally come around to adopting and loving the local music scene that unfortunately fell into the background for far too many years in my opinion. I'd love to share the story with YOU!! Being a native it seems that every time I turn around I run into someone I've known for 40 years, but haven't seen it 10, 20, 30, or more. I had complete control over what I wanted to do with the space & having that type of free range helps a ton as me being an artist. I held a photography exhibit on 5/5/23 with the attractions of (up & coming) East Side Eats (local chefs who served their food previously with The Studio as well). Their menu: Veggie Steamed Gyoza (Dumplings) + Mole Dumplings * Chicken Tinga Kimchi Toastada * Cantarito * Agua Fresca de Jamaica. I tried my best to get everything from the menu, they sold out too quick!! Friday night was fun. The following day, I held an Artist Talk that included Pade Tea Mimosas (local) & Local P, which is a networking event for local producers to showcase their beats. Again, had complete control on what + how I wanted to event to be & I had just as much fun. All before this took place, The Studio has held numerous events, whether it's poetry, markets for people to be vendors, live music, etc. They do a good job at including local as much as possible. Pulling into the alley you find a fenced in parking lot with a large sign reading Angry Axe Throwing. Walking inside there is ample room and roughly eight throwing lanes. Cost to throw is $20/hr per person which I found pretty reasonable. The axe-pert that checked us in also sharpened our axes before showing us to a lane. We had the place pretty much to ourselves on a Tuesday evening around 5-6pm. I went here with a colleague who had never thrown axes before and she had a great time.
