We stopped in at Circa 1880 on a recent quick trip to Abilene. We came back twice that weekend to eat there again. We are from the DFW area and I LOVE small, home-cooking places. If we can find them here in DFW, they are either blah and/or charge a million dollars. Circa on the other hand gave us heaping helpings of delicious, scratch-made food at affordable prices. Even though Circa has everything I look for in a home cooking eatery, the food was not the best part. The people, from the owners who stopped by our table to the waitress/waiter, were over-the-top concerned that we were taken care of and enjoying an exceptional experience. That is a level of service that is so rare to find and I absolutely would make the two hour drive to enjoy that kind of dinner again. It's a place to go where you feel like they actually care about the customer. In this economy where I have to be stingy with dollars, Circa 1880 is a place I'm happy to give my business to! Yummy food is just icing on the cake...oh and they had amazing cake too!

Just driving through the area and stopped here for some dinner. I got the Cream Cheese Jalapeño Melt and my boyfriend got the Country-Fried Steak. Both meals were relatively inexpensive and came in GIANT portions. Absolutely fantastic home cooked food!! The building and town look like they came straight from an old-timey country movie. Really cute atmosphere and super friendly and personable staff. Can't wait to come back!

This place is a hidden gem! We were from out of town looking for a new place to try and we found this amazing spot. The moment we walked in we were welcomed and felt at home with the customer service. We were told of the amazing things they had and what makes them so unique. The food was amazing and left us wanting to come back to try more things on the menu! We will back soon!

The chicken fried steak was decent, although the flour taste in the crust came through very strong.

DELICIOUS! I actually heard about this place from a Reddit post about places to stop on a road trip…read moreacross Texas and I'm so glad I listened! It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! Delicious, great service, and good portions!

The waitress was very friendly, but spread a little thin through all the tables. Menu had something for everyone. We ordered the special, smothered chicken, and it was not special. The shredded cheese they balled on there was barely melted. We ordered a plain burger for my son. The patty was thin and over cooked and bun a little over toasted. I ordered the Philly steak fries and they were good and I would order again. We travel through this area and were hoping it would be a place to eat and rest, but not sure we will make it a priority

I stopped here while on a business trip and was shocked when I received my bill…read more I ordered a $12.99 burger, a Cherry Vanilla DP for $2.80, and upgraded my fries to onion rings for $2, according to the menu. Based on those prices, I expected my total with tax to be around $19-20. Instead, my bill came to $23.38. When I called to ask about the charges, I was told they no longer had the original ticket, so they couldn't review the itemized bill. The employee explained that I had been charged $3 for the onion ring upgrade instead of the $2 shown on the menu, and that my soda had apparently been upgraded to a large without my knowledge or permission, adding another $1. They also mentioned there were several other small charges that contributed to the total, even though I never requested any extras. The restaurant refunded me $2, but that still left me paying $21.38 instead of $19 for a burger, onion rings, and a soda, which I find excessive. I've always met clients at another restaurant when I'm in town for business, but this time my meeting was here at someone else's suggestion. Compared with both the restaurant I normally visit and restaurants where I live, I found the prices and unexplained charges disappointing. Unfortunately, I won't be returning.
