It's a bit spendy about $6 for just a cheeseburger but worth every penny, I wish they accepted cards we would have bought more than 2 but we don't carry a lot of cash. No one even spoke to me while I was in there. The girl literally walked up to the counter and stood there staring at me until I just gave her my order. Traveling through Jacksboro and had seen the many positive reviews so we stopped. Walked in the door and I'm assuming who was the owner looked at us and said we were banned! Great burger. Is it worth the hype? The Herd formula = burger + chips + soda. But really, all you need is the burger. Bring cash. There is way more space outside than inside, but it makes sense. There's plenty of parking, and the wait time isn't too long. On a nice day, you can enjoy your burger with a view of the "world famous burgers" sign and the street. It wasn't a huge burger, but it was more than enough. I wonder if this is what in-n-out was before it became a chain. The buns were grilled so that they hugged the filling with their light crispy shells. I got mine with extra lettuce and tomatoes so it would taste extra fresh and juicy. The meat patty was remarkably loose, nothing like those cakes of goo in the fast food stores that dominate these more rural areas. Their default burger recipe is fantastic, as evident by their century of success. I wouldn't make the drive from out of town just for Herd's--that level of tourism might ruin the vibe. THE classic Texas mustard burger since 1916 - outstanding enough to earn a visit from George Motz of The Burger Show himself!! Herd's is pilgrimage worthy - if Motz can come from NYC, we can come from Garland. And we are so glad we did! Simple perfection is on the menu here: burgers start with a pile of fresh beef on a cold corner of the grill chopped out into patties with a spatula. The grill masters' practiced eye makes for uniform patties, and his muscle memory smashes them flat on an ancient flattop smaller than my breakfast table. Turned once, the meat develops a crunchy umami-bomb crust that seals in juices, resulting in a perfect, tender, BEEFY, crispy patty. This perfectly cooked patty is then put on a grilled bun and sent to the dressing table, where the patty is smeared with mustard, topped with cheese, and the cold stuff (lettuce, tomato, pickle). The burger is quickly wrapped in paper and handed out the window. All that love and time and experience melts together in a gooey, crispy, beefy, tangy bite. Mmmmmm!!! Order at the window the way they tell you to - all burgers come with mustard, lettuce, tomato and pickles. Tell them what you DON'T want first. Then there is a limited selection of extra added toppings like bacon and jalapeño. Mayo and ketchup come in packets. This makes sense when you see how they write the orders down in a code - that code means even on their busiest days they can serve lots of people quickly and efficiently. So here it is... if you love greasy burgers, you will love this one! If you don't, go find a McWhatever. As another reviewer put it: Simple. Delicious. Perfect. I think it's a full 3-4 generations deep in the same family, in the same location. It's cash only, so be prepared. It's burgers, grab a bag of chips, and coke... that's about the end of it. I've been to Herd's many times and enjoy it every time. The burgers and toppings are fresh and the buns are always nicely toasted. If you're looking for a nice sit down place, Herd's is not for you. If you enjoy a meal in a piece of roadside history, and don't mind a quirky atmosphere, you will live Herd's. There is picnic table seating in the shade outside, and inside there are some old fashioned tablet arm school desk type seats where you can spend time reading the graffiti-covered walls. Drinks are retrieved from a chest cooler with a sliding top and there's an array of chips in a clip holder on the wall. Here in Texas, there's a saying: "Flatter than a flitter". I have no idea what a "flitter" is, but the burger was very flat and their meat patty was not very meaty. It was ok, but nowhere near the 4.5 stars it's getting, sorry. And no fries or onion rings? This place is awesome! It is 107 years old for a reason. The hamburgers are simply great old fashioned burgers. Wife got bacon cheeseburger. I got a double cheeseburger. Each of us got a soda (comes in bottles). The total without tip was $18.38. It has some inside seating and it has a nice outside seating area under a nice tree. Have been here multiple times. Simplicity at its best! This is one of the BEST loose MEAT burgers you will ever have. There is nothing fancy about this place its a small hole in the wall so do not come in if your looking for impossible meat, special toppings or brioche bun not the place, just keep rolling. But if you want a burger that when you finish gets you to thinking can I get one of these to go as well then this is it. As I stated earlier nothing fancy here just meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, ketchup, mayo and lightly toasted bun. In any combination you could wan. For the folks that want to get a little crazy you can add bacon or for the spicy ones in your group maybe some jalapeno's but that is about the extend of the menu choices. You can then pick from bag of chips or bottle beverage with a large selection of some local favorites maybe a Bargs Root beer, Crush Orange or Grape soda, plus usual coke and dr. pepper or for the health conscious a bottled water...LOL. If you are coming to HERDs there is nothing on your mind about being health. They do not have "fake meat or gluten free" buns this is a FULL blown get your flavors on burger joint. This is beef country and thank god for that. The burger makes me appreciate being a carnivore. The only problem I have is when I finish I want another. Simple. Delicious. Perfect. That pretty much sums up our experience at Herd's yesterday, so I encourage you to drive out there now! However, this changed my expectation of the best burger, so I feel the need to set that expectation for you. If you know what you're coming for, you will NOT be disappointed! My husband and I were getting ready to drive to Fort Richardson when he casually mentioned we had "to go to that one burger place." That's usually my line, so that made me do a double take. He showed me a news piece on this place that had been family operated with the same recipe since 1916 and I got ridiculously excited!! So I already knew it was cash only and came prepared. You should too! They also take checks, but no cards. I looked at some pictures and prepared myself for long lines and no seating. I was prepared to eat the burger in my car, but we didn't have to. The last thing I suspected, but wasn't absolutely sure about until we got there. When I think of a burger place, I think of cheese fries, tots, onion rings and milkshakes! Not here. This place does burgers, damn good ones! You can help yourself to chips and bottled drinks to bring to the counter and place your order. They also have some candy at the counter, but only burgers, ham sandwiches and grilled cheese are made here. They don't nickel and dime you. The chips and drinks are barely upcharged compared to most places, and burgers start at $4. How refreshing! When we entered just before 11am on a Friday there were 5 people either waiting or eating. It's bench seating with small, school desk arms where you can manage to carefully scarf down your meal. I think you can get 8-10 people in there before it's only standing room. We immediately ordered and looked around while they cooked our burgers fresh! You can practically stand by the grill it's so small, and every inch of wall and ceiling is covered in writing! I have a smaller appetite and my husband is a big eater, but we suspected chips and candy were unnecessary. All burgers come with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and mustard unless otherwise requested. I usually go with mayo, but figured they know what they are doing. I ordered a single cheeseburger with no onions or pickles, my husband got a double double with no onions and we got 2 sodas, all for only $16. In less than 10 minutes we were outside at one of their 4 tables with our burgers and napkins. By this point there were another 10 people in there placing their order. They are popular for a reason! This was a loose meat, hand formed patty cooked hot and fresh with mustard directly on the meat, topped with crisp veggies and the cheese on top of the veggies. The burger was juicy, but left no greasy residue! We didn't even need the extra napkins. The well seasoned meat and mustard together resulted in a flavor explosion. This was delicious and filling and it was several bites before I even considered the cheese wasn't melted like I normally prefer. Everything was so impressively tasty that didn't even bother me. Halfway through I realized this burger was so good it doesn't even need cheese! That is literally the first time that thought has ever entered my mind about cheese with... well, anything! So sure, maybe I've been raised to be codependent on fries and milkshakes when I have my burgers... but we were right, we only needed the burgers! This tiny place that only accepts cash and only makes burgers and has limited seating didn't fit in with my preconceived notion of what a burger place should be... but with real meat burgers this delicious and satisfying... who cares?!? They could do all sorts of crazy things and all would be forgiven for introducing me to this burger. I suppose it's possible that somewhere out there is a better burger, but this is the best I've ever had and would drive back out there for it! It's rare enough to find good food for a cheap price. To get this experience on top of that, I definitely get how this building has been cranking out burgers for generations!
