Regular hamburger, pickles only

Herds is an absolute classic!! Burgers are absolutely delicious, it's gotta be that grill. I love this place. No sides besides chips. Must have cash.

Real Old fashioned burgers with perfect grill flavor and made perfect to your liking. Tiny little joint with character and home town roots. Highly recommend the Double Double!! The staff is knowledgeable and quick with the orders! A few spots to eat outside, but it's more nostalgic to sit inside with the benches. Will be back soon!

Double Cheeseburger with jalapeños, of course

There's two reasons this institution is a Texas legend - even making it into George Motz's legendary compilation, "Hamburger America." The customer service from the owner combined with the unequaled flavor of these burgers makes stopping here a true experience: a juxtaposition of relaxation eating at picnic tables while your senses are being assaulted by the smells and flavors of what will instantly make your Top 5 Burgers list. This place was started in 1916, and allegedly uses either the original flattop from that time or one from the 1940s. Either way, the decades of seasoning make that flattop the perfect foundation for an unbeatable flavor. If you are ever traveling through the Jacksboro area, make some room in your tummy and your day for a visit.

Really good and fresh burger!!

Fantastic good ole' burger!! REALLY good...the only thing I would say it was missing, were fries or onion rings on the side. Burger is fantastic though, TAKE CASH!

The photo everyone who comes feels obligated to take.

Great burger. Is it worth the hype? The Herd formula = burger + chips + soda. But really, all you need is the burger. Bring cash. There is way more space outside than inside, but it makes sense. There's plenty of parking, and the wait time isn't too long. On a nice day, you can enjoy your burger with a view of the "world famous burgers" sign and the street. It wasn't a huge burger, but it was more than enough. I wonder if this is what in-n-out was before it became a chain. The buns were grilled so that they hugged the filling with their light crispy shells. I got mine with extra lettuce and tomatoes so it would taste extra fresh and juicy. The meat patty was remarkably loose, nothing like those cakes of goo in the fast food stores that dominate these more rural areas. Their default burger recipe is fantastic, as evident by their century of success. I wouldn't make the drive from out of town just for Herd's--that level of tourism might ruin the vibe. Rather, if you happen to be in town or driiving through, this is a great place to stop for a short rest.

Nothing fancy, just old school burgers. Can't beat it. I plan trips through Jacksboro just to eat here.

It's cash only, with no ATM nearby. So, plan accordingly. The parking and seating is terrible, and the staff is kind of rude.

The Yelp reviews looked okay and the Website was up to date but when we walked in the door after…read morelunch, it was a different story. The place is located in an old Fire Department building, cavernous and loud due to the high ceiling and stone walls. No one in the dining area so the noise was coming from the bar area. A few specials on the board, mainly seafood, not unusual in this part of North Texas on a Friday due to the numerous catfish specials. It appeared clean but a deeper look showed baseboards dirty, the tables in the bar are made of roughhewn wood which means they cannot be cleaned very well as the food gets trapped in the crevices of the wood. Bathrooms were clean but there was no water, seems it froze during the night. I was surprised they were open without running water but found out later it was just the bathrooms, there were sinks working in the bar. The food was okay; I had the Chicken Fried Steak and my Wife had the Classic Cheeseburger. The CFS was okay with it's thin breading that was slightly crispy. The steak has some flavor which I liked. I chose the fries over mash potatoes, and they were very good. It also came with thin green beans which tasted okay but appeared to be microwaved. The burger was made from short rib grind which leave sit with a very unusual texture. It was very firm, little fat, and extremely salty. Flavor wise under the salt taste was good, just off-putting texture for a burger. My Wife could not finish due to level of salt. Service was good, kitchen was slow with only three tables and we were the only one eating anything more than apps. Minus one star for the cleanliness and lack of water to wash your hands, and minus one for excess salt and poor texture of the burger. We will skip this place next time.

As…read moresomeone who appreciates attention to detail, I was thoroughly impressed by how pristine the entire establishment is--everything from the dining area to the restrooms is maintained to an incredibly high standard. Beyond the cleanliness, the atmosphere is warm and exceptionally welcoming. The staff is genuinely friendly, and the owners go out of their way to ensure every guest feels truly taken care of. It is rare to find a place that balances such professional upkeep with a personal, "home-away-from-home" feel. Highly recommended for anyone in the area looking for a quality experience. The food is great. The plates are small ( which is fine ) but it would have been nice to have a bit of room to cut up my food , and I'd add a second side to anything that's not a sandwich, but even with just one side ( steaks get two ) you don't leave hungry. ( extra sides are 4 a piece) The only other suggestion is a basket of homemade bread would be perfect for this establishment . It's a southern food , steaks and gravy type place. A basket of bread would make it perfect . Great place though . We would go out of our way to stop again.

DELICIOUS! I actually heard about this place from a Reddit post about places to stop on a road trip…read moreacross Texas and I'm so glad I listened! It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! Delicious, great service, and good portions!
