I just love that the Green Frog is back! Way to go Brandi! It's always busy when we stop by. What a great mom & pop type diner. No it's not 5 star Dallas cuisine, or the price tag for that matter either. It's simple food, made well, and if you leave disappointed, it might be more your fault than theirs. The waitstaff, and owner especially, are super friendly and welcoming. They will make you feel like family! The portions are large, and everything seems to be made fresh. This place is definitely your typical, local, small town diner that's been around forever. The interior looks like it's straight out of 1965. I came here for lunch with a coworker while passing through the area. There is a buffet available, which my coworker had and LOVED, but I chose to order off the menu. As one would expect, most everything is fried and/or unhealthy. I ended up with the fried catfish, that came with a choice of side (I ordered fried okra) and a trip to the salad bar portion of the buffet. Like I said, my coworker loved the Buffett, with its meatloaf, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and a variety of sides. It also had dessert, of course. I must say that my fried catfish was not only disappointing, but gross. The breading was thick and awesome, but the fish itself was mushy and slimy. Thankfully, the okra saved the day and was filling. I would try this place again, but order something else. The burgers sounded good and on the wall behind the checkout are old pictures from the 1940s of when the place opened as a burger stand. read more

We have been here every year for last 15+ years and we usually have a group 15-20 people for breakfast or dinner. On Saturday 8/31 we were turned away as they didn't have space for us and they still had there other half of the restaurant open. Poor customer service and I was shocked as I have never seen this before. We drove 1 hr away to another restaurant and will figure something out for next year as we will not go back to this restaurant again. I was told it was the owners daughter that treated us this way! There loss and the tip that waitress lost also.... Update: Received a follow up from this review which stated it was from the kitchen not able to support us. Dinner offers buffet style and they can prepare compared to the grill that must cook everything. I am still shocked this wasn't shared with us or given a chance to sit and wait if it took longer. For us and them they knew we were in town for a reunion even from the followup I received. We could have stayed out of the way and caught up and waited if that was needed for the kitchen. read more

Wow! I don't even know where to begin to describe our experience at Brandi's Green Frog. The atmosphere was down home, warm and genuinely friendly. The owner Brandi and her staff made us feel like family. The restaurant, which is located at 420 N. Main Street in Jacksboro was well worth the trip. The restaurant was immaculate. Okay, so you're driving through Texas somewhere west of the metroplex and you hit Jacksboro. You're looking for an option to eat a bite. You have a gas station or two a few small mom-and-pop shops and the Green Frog Restaurant on the east side of the road. There are lots of cars and good old pickup trucks parked outside so you figure this must be the place to be. Congratulations, you are right. My girlfriend and I were coming back from a camping trip recently and met my grandparents in Jacksboro Texas at the green frog. It was on a Sunday so understand everybody inside was dressed to a T with their finest linens and their shiniest polished boots. When the two of us walked in looking like a couple of hobos who had been living out of saddlebags and a tent for a week nobody stopped to look up. Everyone was either lined up at the buffet or faces buried in the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and good old ranch-style beans. This place is a buffet with about a dozen options all of which are good. We both had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and some sort of dessert following our salads. With a few surprise flat screen TVs inside with college football playing, you couldn't have asked for much more. So if you're passing through and hear your stomach rumbling stop at the green frog and I suggest trying the bread pudding it's delish! read more

So I remember this place from about 25 years ago driving between Texas and Oklahoma. The burgers were sensational as my 20 year old mind thought at the time. A quaint diner on the bend of a US highway in a small town. Fast forward and last Friday night my husband and I stopped there on our way to our rural property. It's very easy to park a truck and trailer here. We got there about 5:15 and only one other customer was in the room. We figured folks were just not off work yet. They had a buffet going and after a quick survey we figured we would go with that. The small chicken fried steak portion was actually pretty good, but the gravy was for sure not homemade. The sides all tasted like they were out of cans. The reason for the 3 stars is that the chicken fried steak was actually very good. Other than that- unremarkable meal. read more

This was a refreshing surprise. My husband enjoyed the buffet. I am gluten free; so the sweet lady who waited on us said if I also desired the buffet, (salad, potatoes, beans and vegetables), she would fix me a grilled chicken breast to go with it. It was cooked to perfection and the tea was fresh and wonderful! Did I mention I am picky about stale coffee and ice tea ? The place has great food & used to be very accommodating each year during our family reunion. I had family from out of state that was anxious to try their food. The staff working today for breakfast would not open their additional room and let us know they could not seat us. We had 18 of us and were willing to wait for room, but were told we needed to go elsewhere without any explanation after finding out we were in town for a reunion. In future communications with the owners it was revealed the reason we, and other large groups from the reunion, were turned away was kitchen capacity. At dinner time they have a buffet which easily handles large groups. We have always been very respectful & good tippers. This was an unfortunate example of poor communications and we look forward to working with them next year. . read more

We stopped in on a Sunday and it was packed. It was the after church crowd. We were seated right away even though we were a party of 6. We all got the buffet. It was your basic southern comfort food. Chicken Fried steak, fried chicken and chicken spaghetti. Not great but not bad either. The mashed potatoes were very good however. There was ice cream, cobbler and pudding to finish it off. We were all full when we left so it hit the spot. Service was great, so give it a chance. It is your basic home town restaurant. read more

As an out of town interloper I'm not going to berate a local favorite. Suffice it to say the Green Frog didn't live up to the hype I found on Yelp. One of the few ways to break the monotony of the road is to explore local eateries along the way. While overnighting in Abilene I searched the path ahead for highly rated diners. The Frog topped the list so we set sail. By the clock we arrived 40 minutes before closing. The buffet that so many raved about lay nearly barren. Upon inquiry we learned the kitchen was closed so it was eat what's left in the warmers or nothing. Being Sunday we knew few other local places would be open and my wife was famished so we stayed. She scraped together a plate of meat loaf and sides while I chose to grab a dessert and glass of tea. My puny peach cobbler was overly sweet but edible. My wife said her plate was actually pretty good but wouldn't win any blue ribbons. Maybe if we had arrived earlier things might have been grander but I don't see us coming this way again so we'll never know. It wasn't bad so give it a try. I hope you get the better days. read more

Extremely disappointed that i, as a person in a wheelchair, couldn't use the restroom and had to stop at another facility, before continuing on my road trip. I had high hopes for this restaurant based on the reviews. I love "homestyle" cooking which sometimes means fried. HOWEVER, unless you like eating a ton of grease, it's not worth it. I ordered a taco salad from the menu because the meet options on the buffet were so soaked in grease it was just gross. My 13 year old son also ordered from the menu (chicken strips and french fries). The picture attached is being able to see the bottom of the metal basket through the paper because it was so drenched in grease. I picked up the basket and the table was greasy and it dripped on me while trying to take a pic. Again, I love homestyle cooking but this was not good. By the time we left, the place was packed so apparently drenched in grease is quiet popular in Jacksboro, Texas. If you are ok with really greasy food, go for it. If not, this is a waste of time and money. Oh and my son got the soft serve ice cream and it does look weird as the other review stated. It looked very yellow. The same color as the banana pudding (which by the way was the best thing about this place). Sorry, I wish this review was better but I'm currently not feeling well after eating here and wanted to warn others who may also have an issue with drinking grease. Sorry! read more

My wife has a gluten allergy. Fortunately, two of the ladies there also have a gluten allergy. They were EXTREMELY accommodating, and VERY careful to make sure there was no chance of cross contamination. They were quick to point out exactly what could and couldn't be eaten, including the desserts. We really felt at ease, which isn't the case in many small-town diners. They even have a separate cooking griddle that they only use to cook gluten-free that they place on the griddle, and were kind enough to cook up some french fries in a separate batch of oil as well. My wife had no problems eating the food, and we will definitely be back at to eat at the Green frog the next time we're in Jacksboro. Oh, and in case I didn't mention it, the food was plentiful, and my wife was astounded at how low the price was. Heck, the tea was about half the price I'd expect to pay in Dallas. As for the ambiance, well, small town Texas all the way. And that's not a bad thing. We had our backs directly in front of the door, and one of the local coaches was telling an amusing story about how the football team had lost their game, and he had taken away their stereos, made them wear middle school jerseys in the next game, and had done similar things to motivate them. There were a few choices in Jacksboro when we were driving through, and I really wanted Mexican food, but my husband talked me into trying this little place. Turns out it's pretty good! Ambiance--small town eatery, plenty of seating. Service--Good; the waitress came by regularly to refill our tea and remove plates. Food--We were late for lunch (arrived about 2 pm), but the buffet was still stocked. True, the chicken fried steak pieces were a little too well done, but the mashed potatoes and gravy were plentiful, as well as the mixed vegetables (so-so) and other entrees. The salad bar was typical, but let me say the highlight of the trip was the YEAST ROLLS! OMG, I could've eaten a DOZEN. My husband suggested I stop after two because I hadn't noticed the BREAD PUDDING for dessert! It's one of my favorite-est things! It was very good, and I even sampled their pineapple cobbler (?). What a great mom & pop home cookin' restaurant. When I drive to central or south Texas, I always try to stop at Green Frog for a yummy breakfast or their great lunch buffet. The lunch is just like grandma used to make. Chicken fry steak, fried fish, sausage, veggies, smashed potatoes & gravy. Salad bar. Desserts. My family has been coming to this restuarant now for about 15 years now when in town for a family reunion. This was my first time coming from California and I was looking forward to joining them in this tradition. We had made plans to eat one of the mornings there and when we got there with a large group of us they said they did not have the room for us even they had a banquet room that the family always sat in. From what we heard it was more personal and because we were related to a family member who worked there that the owners daughter did not like they turned us away. My wife and I stopped in here for lunch as we were coming home from a long trip. They have a very nice buffet for a small town cafe with local favorites such as chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and meat loaf. The manager was there and making sure that everything was fresh and the buffet was clean. The salad was a great treat -since you don't usually eat salad while traveling. The waitress was very friendly and attentive even asking if we wanted our iced tea in a to go cup as we were leaving. The food was very good. Service was great and also at a good price. The buffet is always the same and there is nothing on their menu that would make a difference. The do change to catfish one day of the week, but my most recent visit they had the catfish out there and it wasn't the day they normally served it. It's always chicken fried steak, fried catfish, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, cowboy beans, pork chops. Every now and then there's a chicken spaghetti or something. I would pick a different place to eat before this one. The staff is always very friendly, the restraunt is always clean and they are very good about attending your table. Based on Yelp reviews we chose the Green Frog for lunch while traveling from Wichita Falls to home. The buffet looked good so we went for it. The salad selections were ample; mixed lettuce & greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, olives, cheese, croutons, etc. with four dressing choices. There was also a couple of other salad/slaw dishes. The ranch dressing was thin & watery. As this was Sunday the buffet entree was fried chicken. Yummy good! Crunchy, tasty & moist. Mashed potatoes, corn & green bean sides were okay. Neither of us tried the gravy. They also had something called Jalapeño Custard. I didn't try it but my husband did. He said it was a strange dish of potted meat (?), jalapeños, cheese & some weird sauce/gravy. He said he was glad he only put a spoonful on his plate. The dessert choices on the buffet, banana pudding (I think that's what it was), cherry cobbler, bread pudding & butterscotch pudding w/marshmallow topping, didn't appeal to us at all so we passed. Husband went for the soft serve ice cream. Said it was too icey & has a strange color. In spite of the weaker dishes the fried chicken & salad bar totally make the stop worthwhile (hence the 4 star rating). read more

Really disappointed in the service this weekend. My family comes from all over the US every Labor Day weekend to attend a family reunion, and has been doing so for at least 15 years. We make a point, every year, to have at least one meal at The Green Frog. There are about 15-20 of us, and they have ALWAYS been able to accommodate us, but this year was different. The waitress asked us if we were with the reunion, and when we replied "yes", we were abruptly turned away, and told that they didn't have enough room. The thing is, they have a whole other section of restaurant that they used to open up, if the main room was too full, but the main part of the restaurant wasn't even half full! I was told later that the gal turning us away was the owner's daughter. We are a quiet group, no small children, a few elderly, and just wanted to enjoy a meal together to honor this 15 year tradition. For some of us, this is the one time a year that we get to break bread together. I will never go back, after such a rude and embarrassing experience. read more

Ok, here's the deal. This is basically a good place. The buffet is the way to go. Years ago it got run down and the food got bland, real bland, like, nursing home bland, but fortunately a few years ago somebody else bought it, cleaned it up and turned it around. The food is a little typical but it's very good. The buff features a salad bar with quite a few choices and is always fresh and crisp. Rolls and corn muffins are served with the buffet and 9 times out of 10 they are warm and soft. Pretty good eating. It's been years since I ordered off the menu, but I am told the burgers are very good. The buffet is always full of CFS, chicken strips, pork chops and sides.
