As an out of town interloper I'm not going to berate a local favorite. Suffice it to say the Green Frog didn't live up to the hype I found on Yelp. One of the few ways to break the monotony of the road is to explore local eateries along the way. While overnighting in Abilene I searched the path ahead for highly rated diners. The Frog topped the list so we set sail. By the clock we arrived 40 minutes before closing. The buffet that so many raved about lay nearly barren. Upon inquiry we learned the kitchen was closed so it was eat what's left in the warmers or nothing. Being Sunday we knew few other local places would be open and my wife was famished so we stayed. She scraped together a plate of meat loaf and sides while I chose to grab a dessert and glass of tea. My puny peach cobbler was overly sweet but edible. My wife said her plate was actually pretty good but wouldn't win any blue ribbons. Maybe if we had arrived earlier things might have been grander but I don't see us coming this way again so we'll never know. It wasn't bad so give it a try. I hope you get the better days.

I had heard GFR makes a good cheeseburger, and they do. It's an ordinary burger done quite well, but still only gets a three burger rating.

The place is located in an old Fire Department building, cavernous and loud due to the high ceiling and stone walls. No one in the dining area so the noise was coming from the bar area. A few specials on the board, mainly seafood, not unusual in this part of North Texas on a Friday due to the numerous catfish specials. It appeared clean but a deeper look showed baseboards dirty, the tables in the bar are made of roughhewn wood which means they cannot be cleaned very well as the food gets trapped in the crevices of the wood. Bathrooms were clean but there was no water, seems it froze during the night. I was surprised they were open without running water but found out later it was just the bathrooms, there were sinks working in the bar. The food was okay; I had the Chicken Fried Steak and my Wife had the Classic Cheeseburger. The CFS was okay with it's thin breading that was slightly crispy. The steak has some flavor which I liked. I chose the fries over mash potatoes, and they were very good. It also came with thin green beans which tasted okay but appeared to be microwaved. The burger was made from short rib grind which leave sit with a very unusual texture. It was very firm, little fat, and extremely salty. Flavor wise under the salt taste was good, just off-putting texture for a burger. My Wife could not finish due to level of salt. Service was good, kitchen was slow with only three tables and we were the only one eating anything more than apps. Minus one star for the cleanliness and lack of water to wash your hands, and minus one for excess salt and poor texture of the burger. We will skip this place next time.

Fountain soft drinks were very good in both mix and carbonation. The cupcakes they make daily looked like object de' art but our diet wouldn't allow a bite. If you can, try one of those. We dropped by here based on local residents that said they have great sandwiches. It's a quaint little mom and pop style sandwich restaurant. They also serve burgers and tacos. So I ordered the cheeseburger on sourdough (it seems they make their own buns) and my friend ordered the Linda's signature turkey sandwich. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They recommended tater tots for my buddy. My burger was good. Doesn't appear to be a frozen Pattie. I liked everything but the only downfall was the bun fell apart too quickly. However that same bun tasted really good. I want to come back and try the sandwiches next.

DELICIOUS! I actually heard about this place from a Reddit post about places to stop on a road trip…read moreacross Texas and I'm so glad I listened! It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! Delicious, great service, and good portions!

My husband got the deluxe breakfast. The hashbrowns were greasy, obviously not reconstituted, and overcooked. He chose a pancake instead of the biscuit and gravy. His pancake took forever to receive. It was thin and tasteless. I've had better from a Bisquick box! My tortilla was greasy. Barely recognizable as a tortilla. Had I not been genuinely hungry, I would have sent it back. I managed to eat two triangles. I tried to cover up some of the greasiness with their salsa. I've had better salsa from Old El Paso. It was watery and flavorless. That seemed to be the overall theme for this meal. Flavorless and thin on cooking prowess. Had the waitress not been friendly, I would have given only one star. $25 for barely edible anything!?! Never never again.

Very friendly welcome when we walked in the door. The nice lady at the counter walked us through the process and explained the menu. In order the fish and shrimp combo with tater tots and it came with a "salad bar" and pinto beans. The salad was really fixings for a sandwich or burger and some sauces. My Wife ordered their famous cheeseburger that appears to have won "Best Burger" many times by the plaques on the wall, and their onions rings. Everything is made fresh so we waited about 15 minutes while sitting in the dining room with a great view of Lake Bridgeport. Food was delivered and it looked great and smelled good. My fish was crispy, with a cornmeal batter that was seasoned very elk and it tasted GREAT! The shrimp has a panko breading that was crispy and cured my craving for fried shrimp.Tots nice and crispy, maybe just a little too crispy, but they were very good. Large portions for sure. Our appetizer was a jalapeño sausage, wrapped in bacon and topped with melted cheese. Wow! Excellent pop, not too spicy and the flavors melded great together. The cheeseburger was a short rib grind burger patty, thick and full size. Taste was excellent but the firm texture of the short rib meat may surprise you. The star of the burger was the bun; jalapeño bread reminiscent of a Shlotskys sandwich bread but nice and soft. I could eat just an order of those buns. Overall food 5 stars. The dining room a solid 4 stars as it is showing it's age but we will visit again the get of their great, well priced food.
