I have pretty high standards for dining at Indian restaurants now based on past experiences. I've dined at this particular restaurant a few times for buffet and a la carte. I liked their buffet options - good for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. My decision is split for a la carte dining because my first experience was bad. We ordered this Kashmiri rice and it was so disappointing and bland. I guess I expected good food. That was a year ago. Today we went for early dinner and my experience was a lot better. We didn't go for the buffet but enjoyed the a la carte entrees we ordered. We ordered a bread basket which had onion kulcha (flat bread stuffed with onions and spices), plain naan, and paratha. We ate the breads with Sarson Ka Saag and Vegetable Jalfrezi. It was surprisingly good; very flavorful. We requested that the dishes be cooked at medium level "hotness" or spice level and we were quite pleased. The curries weren't overly spicy or bland. Lastly, I was happy and satisfied with the service and politeness. The wait staff came to our table a couple of times to ask us how the food was and were helpful. This was something new for us since we find that most Indian restaurants are prejudicial against Indian customers. I was pleased to be treated like all the other diners at the restaurant. I would definitely dine here again. Whatever they improved from my previous experiences, they did a good job. Hope it continues. read more

Cinnamon, you spice up my life! In all seriousness, this is a SOLID north Indian restaurants that executes all the usual suspects really well. Their menu is extensive but my sister and I always order the chicken tikka masala (so basic, I know...) and the saag paneer. The rice is always steaming hot and fresh and the garlic naan - wow. Holy pillows of soft garlicky buttery goodness. The proprietors are warm and welcoming and the food is delicious. Apparently there is a lunch buffet, which I have not had the opportunity to try yet. I will say that I have been surprised at how empty the restaurant can be on a Thursday night - a more bustling crowd would give it more life and a better vibe... Yum!! I love this place, but that's probably because I also love Indian food. I'd been searching for a good, reasonably priced Indian food place since I graduated from college and this is my new go-to spot. The lunch buffet is awesome. They serve a few different types of chicken, a few vegetable dishes, a goat dish, many different chutneys, rice, battered veggies, tandoori, everything! They always have gulab jamun (little round pastries soaking in honey syrup) and kheer (rice pudding) and sometimes they have a few other dessert choices (like fruit). The waiter brings fresh naan for the table. The buffet ends up costing around $12-$13 per person, including tip and tax. If you come here for non-buffet food, it's great too. The dishes come out in these small buckets and I always think to myself, "these portions are too small!" HOWEVER, once you start eating, you find that the portions are perfect and I always have leftovers. All sauce-y dishes come with rice. We haven't been to this restaurant in quite some time. I am very happy my family decided to try them again tonight. We may have just struck gold. We started with three appetizer courses. The Somosas were crisp and so flavorful. The vegetable fritters were little fried treats. And the catfish nuggets made my 6yr old smile for miles. Came here for the first time after a recommendation from a good friend! The food portions are very, very large and two people can easily share an entree. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and the lamb rogan josh. Both meals came with jasmine rice. We also got the garlic naan which was good, but the only thing I had that I didn't love. I get it's a buffet most of the time but if I have to flag someone down every single time to clear off plates or refill our drinks, that's poor service. They also rush you out during busier times. Very good! The buffet is a great deal and comes with a good variety of dishes, condiments, and desserts. Waitstaff was friendly and quick to clear dirty dishes. The last time I was here (I always go for the buffet, nothing is better than buffet), I actually, literally had this thought: "This food is so amazing. How can I eat more of it? How can I eat it faster? Am I opening my mouth wide enough? Can I use surgery to expand my stomach? All this chewing is definitely slowing me down. Maybe there are bigger forks and spoons nearby?" For under $12, this is the greatest lunch that you can get at any establishment, Indian or not. I've eaten a fair amount of Indian food in my life--definitely above-average for a white guy. This is by far the best. The key to Indian food (as I understand it) are the spices. The spices here are perfect: complicated, subtle, unusual, rewarding, lingering on the palette. After I eat at Cinnamon, I can't stop thinking about Cinnamon often for a day or more. It's that good. Let's say you have a terrible day: your spouse serves you divorce papers; one or both parents die; you find out that you're under federal indictment with an overwhelming probability that you will be wrongfully convicted of child molestation thus ensuring spend the rest of your life of in Federal SUPERMAX prison. Even if all these misfortunes befall you at the same date, if you eat at Cinnamon you will still feel a sense of deep calm and a warm, postcoital glow. read more

I've been told by an Indian restaurant owner that there are two types of Indian/Pakistani and/or mugal style of restaurants. Those whose cooks know Indian food by professional trade and who take their homelands cooking to heart(h). And then there are those whose cooks are bachelors, move to the US and decide to open up a restaurant. Whatever category Cinnamon's cooks fall into - from prebagged chapaddi's to unseasoned nan or bland pandering versions of Indian food, there are a mighty many more places than this place where I would choose to get Indian food from like 28th and Lexington in Manhattan, St. Marks Place, Iselin/Edison NJ. This place is about as savory as putting a pair of gym socks in your mouth after having them in goretex hiking boots for a full day in the woods. Do yourself a favor and visit Jersey City or Iselin for some real Indian food. read more

Oh Cinnamon, how I yearn to return for another amazing meal. Sadly, you're quite a distance from where I live, and I only get to bask in your spice-filled glory but once a year. From the outside, Cinnamon is your typical Indian restaurant, albeit on the large side, in the middle of a fairly nondescript shopping mall. Walking inside, you quickly come to realize that you should never judge a book by its cover, especially if you came during lunch hours for the buffet (as I did). The buffet was SPRAWLING, and there was an absolute ton of options to pick from. Now, I love Indian food - no, seriously, it's probably my favorite food on the planet, and at a buffet I can usually somehow manage to pack away 3 plate fulls of the glopy stuff and still have room for dessert (mind you, I usually feel like absolute garbage afterwards). At Cinnamon, I find myself hard pressed to do my usual 2 1/2 plate buffet rush, and have been able to try all the buffet had to offer. There's that much food. The food quality was pretty good, the flavors well balanced, and the spices not overpowering. There's plenty of options for vegetarians and carnivores alike, and the staff were more than accommodating for large groups - I had visited with a group of about 13 people. Decor is fairly typical for an Indian joint - big curtains, sandstone coloring, etc. Nothing too crazy. Will I be back? You can bet on it! read more

Wanted to try a new-to-me place, went here based on Yelp reviews. Whatever everyone else is smoking, I want some, because no part of my experience here was anything close to 5-star. Aside from the fact that there seemed to be some confusion as to where to seat the two of us -- in a nearly empty dining room on a quiet night -- and the waiter mostly not understanding what we were asking (the word "vegetable" was a total miss) and refusing to make any substitutions/additions (of said vegetables), the food we actually got was meh. It was edible, but I have definitely had far better. The biryani lacked the usual fluffiness that I've always gotten elsewhere, the naan was sort of doughy and a touch oily -- not crispy at all, my saag paneer was inexplicably brown (seriously, can somebody please address this?), the lamb chops were fatty and poorly presented, and I wish I could remember which particular tasteless, gloopy chicken dish we had, but I'm not entirely sure that they are distinguishable anyway. Rasmalai for dessert was somehow sour and hard/crumbly. Needless to say - we elected not to take home any leftovers. There are better Indian restaurants in the area. read more

While lazing on a Sunday afternoon, we had a hankering for Indian and were making a trip out here anyways...so this is where we decided to go. Thier buffet lunch was big and nicely balanced with meat and vegetarian items. The serivce was attentive and plentiful, as our water was contantly refilled and plates cleared away. It's a bit loud due to all of the hard services abound in the place...but that's OK. We were eating...to talking. Okay I'm going to be the party pooper here because I don't understand why this restaurant is held in such high regards? My fiance and I visited this location a couple months ago after I read the reviews on Yelp and we were both craving Indian. Needless to say we were fairly disappointed. Now when I say disappointed the food wasn't God awful, it was okay but I wasn't blown away as some others have stated. We came here for dinner and ate from the menu so I can't comment on the buffet. Fiance ordered Tika Masala and I ordered the Tandoori chicken. Both are what I would call the usual standard Indian fare and it was engh, nothing to write home about. The service was very inattentive, had to wait a while for our waiter and he threw away our leftovers after the meal was finished???? He also threw away the cork to our wine bottle and had to find a replacement for us when we didn't finish the bottle. The thing that really bothered me however was the decor. It was a bright, orange and red color pattern everywhere and it just looked terrible in my opinion. It was the first thing you notice when you walk in and believe me, you really really notice it. The restaurant is also located directly next to a catering hall and there was a large noisy party going on when we arrived. I know it's not the fault of Cinnamon but the loud party really distracted from the romantic bright orange ambiance of the restaurant :| Maybe we just came in on an off day or the head chef called out sick or something but we just weren't all that impressed upon leaving. Honestly, the best Indian food we have found since moving to the area is Pooja in Warren. Cinnamon is good, but not comparable to the Indian restaurants in the City that I like. In addition I've had better and more authentic Indian food elsewhere in New Jersey. At any rate, the buffet was big and good. Large selection and fresh naan brought to the table. By the time I got to the buffet, it was a bit dry - could have been fresher. Maybe also some items were a bit oily. I also like my Indian food a bit spicier than what they were serving. But the service was friendly and they seemed happy to see you fill up on their food and roll out of there. LOL. The Lamb and mixed Chicken dishes are all good and this place while usually quite it never disappoints. I suggest this place if you are looking for authentic Indian with the ability to turn up the heat which they always deliver on. The service is spot on and they are very attentive to you through the meal. They do have a $10 off offer on $50 or more from the bill. They have the coupon buried on their website so just look for it and print it. We always order 2 main dishes, the chickpea dish and the naan bread which comes to around $55. We then use the coupon with the discount the bill is very reasonable plus we have lunch for the next day or so. read more
