Fortune Buffet in Wharton is a decent enough place to eat with a fairly diverse set of offerings that you will immediately recognize as standard Chinese buffet fare. They recently raised the prices, so it is no longer the bargain it once was. However, they do offer a military/veteran's discount that'll probably save you 10% or so. I typically eat there 2-3 times a month and mainly on nights when I really don't want to cook. Surprisingly, they include pretty good and fresh sushi in their all-you-can eat buffet and what is offered is fairly diverse. When you pay for your meal (up-front) the server will also ask you what type of soft drink you'd like as it's included in the price. The servers I've had taken care of me do a very good job of keeping your chosen drink topped off when they notice you need more. You do need to pay attention as you go up to the buffet as the serving dishes' contents are selected by other diners, some of the food can get dried out. However, the young woman cashier/manager will see to it that more food is brought out from the kitchen as needed or requested. They also have a pretty good cook-to-order table where you select the ingredients for your dish, and they prepare it for you with whatever seasonings you ask for (teriyaki, garlic, hot sauce, soy sauce, etc. While this buffet is, as others have stated, middling in food quality, it isn't bad either, or if you are looking to fill up for a reasonable cost, then this place will fit the bill. I've seen it busy at times, so if that's a recommendation, Fortune Buffet has repeat customers who seem to like the place and return time and again. I've only been to Fortune Buffet in Wharton, NJ, twice so far, but it's quickly becoming one of my favorite spots! The staff here are super friendly, which makes the experience even better. Let's face it when it comes to Chinese Buffets, they're all pretty much the same thing with a lot of the same food choices. Fortune Buffet is no different. I decided to try this place on a recommendation from a family member. The last time I ate at a Chinese Buffet I was in Deerfield Beach, Fla and that Buffet was amazing...so I decided to give this place a try. I will admit I came on a Thursday night around 8p. I noticed Fortune Buffet looked and felt like your typical Chinese Buffet Restaurant. They do have a wide variety of choices to choose from. The entire room is broken down into stations. There is a soup station and steamed dumplings along with stuffed pizza and fried chicken , egg rolls and breaded fried shrimp. I chose the wonton ton soup which happened to taste pretty good. The dumplings were a good size, and I added Chinese noodles and scallions. I then made my way over to the center station and tried chicken n broccoli which had good flavor. The Chinese roast pork, mine was a bit dry. The walnut chicken wasn't bad, it had a weird type texture. The pork fried dumplings were a good size, a bit greasy but not bad. The baby clams in a garlic broth were ok. I would've like to see more garlic and spices. I combined a few sauces and made a nice dipping sauce for my dumplings and deep fried shrimp. I tried some fried rice and sautéed bok choy. They did have a lot more dishes to choose from including crab legs , fish and seafood. I wanted to try their hibachi so I passed on many other dishes. I think the hibachi station was my favorite. I was able to pick and choose from any of the meats and seafood that I wanted and pick from a nice assortment of fresh vegetables to have cooked in front of me. I chose steak and shrimp with snow peas, scallions, mushrooms, carrots, udon noodles prepared with garlic, water, teriyaki sauce, and some other type sauce. It was all nicely stir fried . This by far tasted the freshest and it didn't have the feel of laying around. This cook was very nice and friendly. The waitstaff has no personality. Good thing I mentioned I needed a stir fry order to go. The cook was going to close up without asking, or mentioning last call. I think that's a big mistake to pack up and cleanup while people are still there eating... There were several other stations but I was too full to try them. There is also a dessert bar with all types of mini desserts, puddings and jello, along with a new self serve ice cream machine. The best thing was the price. It came to $10 a person all you can eat with a 20% coupon. I believe it's more on the weekends and no coupon. The decor was a bit tired and needs updating. Again, this place is very reasonable so I guess you get what you pay for. The Fortune Buffet is located in Wharton in a strip mall. This is my 2nd review of the Fortune Buffet. It used to be a solid 3 stars... since the big makeover the food quality has gone downhill. I stopped in for lunch and - first off - they make you pay before you eat. The hostess was a bit condescending with me- she said "We pay before we eat." I said, "Oh, we pay? Are you going to split the bill with me?" I don't think she appreciated my humor. Still... I am going to give it two stars simply because there have been good experiences at this buffet in the past. To begin, the food is mediocre to good if you know what to get. The ice cream is sub-par to inedible most visits and the hibachi station grill could be a few degrees hotter so the vegetables and meat can get a nice sear/caramelazation rather than simply steaming. The person cooking at the hibachi station is also heavy-handed with the sauces. Still, I usually manage to leave feeling satisfied to full most visits. Compared to other Chinese buffets I've visited in New Jersey, this one has a slightly better selection of food. However, the service today was absolutely horrible. To start, the card machine was down and paying for our meals took FOREVER and there was no communication or apology for the inconvenience. After 5-10 minutes, we were finally able to pay. The host immediately went to guide us to our table without waiting to make sure that everyone in our party was following. When we were brought over to the bench seating, we asked if we could have a regular table. "Go over there then," he said with a wave to another section of the restaurant. We listened and selected our own table. Our server seemed nice initially. He brought us our beverages quickly and apologized for the wait to pay and rude behavior of the host. However, that was the only positive thing we could say about this server. Throughout our meal, my tablemates requested beverage refills multiple times, only for him to ignore the requests. He only came once to bus the stacks of plates from our table. The restaurant was not particularly crowded; our server was too preoccupied by his conversation with another table to be attentive to the job. The Hibachi station food was decent, but definitely not worth the wait. It was the first thing I did upon arriving at the buffet. In the time I took waiting for my food, people at my table and at neighboring tables were able to make multiple trips to the buffet. Because of this wait, it meant that I was only on my first plate when the rest of the people at my table were ready for dessert. This made me feel rushed instead of allowing me the opportunity to enjoy a nice leisurely lunch. The rest of the lunch selections were decent, though I would have appreciated a slotted spoon for the seafood. The fruit, however, was pretty bad, excluding the watermelon. The pineapple had an odd taste, the dragonfruit was dry, and the mango was flavorless. The fried donut I had was dry with several hard edges. We asked to speak to a manager. Instead of honoring our request or informing us that a manager was unavailable, we were offered a gift certificate that would compensate for 2 of the 3 meals. We pointed this out and she adjusted the amount to compensate for about 91% of the cost of 3 meals before tax and tip. We still would have liked to speak to a manager. About 15 minutes after leaving the restaurant, multiple charges from the restaurant appeared on our online credit card statement. We were charged 3 times for our $30 meals. Needless to say, we will be disputing those extra charges with the credit card company. read more

So I'm giving this place 4 stars, I debated giving it 3 stars but I think 4 is where it's at. taking into consideration price and not comparing it to non buffets. The food here is OK. They have some sushi that is the bare minimum to call sushi but it's still sushi. They have a hibachi station, were you can pick what you want and they will make it for you. On Friday nights they have crab legs, these crab legs are hit or miss and they break up the clusters into individual legs but it's a buffet who really cares. The food is all ok, I like the walnut chicken but I wouldn't say anything here is the best Chinese food I have ever had, at the same time you're at a buffet, a very in-expensive buffet. You get what you pay for and this being one of the few cheap buffets I'm ok with that. If you want better quality Chinese food go to Hunan taste in Denville and you are going to pay for it. The biggest grip I have about this place... The ice-cream machine makes lack luster ice-cream. Its soft serve but it's really soft serve. Went here on Monday 5/28/18 for lunch. The place looks great from the renovations and it's the same owners and same management for all of you who think it has changed. However the food went way down hill. On this day I give it 1 star. The price went up to $10.88 which you pay upfront when you walk in and includes a mandatory charge for a beverage even if you want to drink water, I discovered this from reading a current review on yelp. I am not happy with this new policy and it could be a deal braker for me. Most of the food I had was cold, I did not enjoy the buffet and will go as far as to say that the food was very disappointing, bordering tasteless. They used to have the best pork fried rice, not any more. Also, no more boneless spare ribs which was my favorite dish, no spring rolls, no more home made hot mustard. I want Chinese food not all the other crap. If I had to rate it on todays visit I would give it one star and never return. I will wait a month or two to go back again and see if the food gets as good as it use to be prior to the renovations. After reading all of the negative reviews for this place I wanted to try the food to see if it really is as bad as most reviewers said it is. The food is your typical mediocre Chinese buffet offering with the greasy lo mein, stuffed mushrooms, pizza, quesadillas, sushi, chicken and mushrooms, and soups. As another reviewer stated the soft serve ice cream machine has melting ice cream which is somewhat off-putting. The wonton soup was good, there was a hibachi table with someone sporadically standing behind the grill. I wasn't able to get a plate from there because there was nobody there when I went there unfortunately. All of the food was on par with most other Chinese buffets and that is about the best you can ask for from any Chinese buffet. When I get there the girl in front was nice but what I find odd is how she stated that if there is anything that I want that's empty to request a refill. Don't buffets bring out rounds of fresh food every so often? That I found sketchy. The food was disgusting. There was no flavor, bland, dry, and was sitting out for a long time. I had asked for pizza and when they finally brought it out it looked like my 4 year old nephew made the pizza himself it was under cooked and messy. Also the crust was sweet. I didn't realize until eating that the fried rice had pork in it. That I feel should be addressed because they need to realize some people do not eat pork for religious reasons. Well, my husband, who loves Chinese buffets, talked me into returning since the renovation. I have to say, compared to any other Chinese buffet I've been to, it's excellent. The place is now very clean, the food stations are kept clean, there is attention to the food staying fresh, and there are different selections .....not always the same 10 things as before. I can now finally get full and enjoy the food there. Congratulations on the excellent renovation! Come and try it again, or for the first time! You won't be disappointed!
