Riverwinds Restaurant has been on our radar for quite some time, so I decided to bring my…read moregirlfriend, Cindy, there for her birthday. When I made our reservation online, I included a special request asking if we could be seated by a window to enjoy the river and, hopefully, the sunset. They were able to accommodate our request, and we had a beautiful view of the river. It was a little cloudy, so the sunset wasn't spectacular, but the scenery still made for a wonderful evening. From the moment we arrived, the staff was warm and welcoming. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. We started with the Fried Fresh Mozzarella Bruschetta, and it was outstanding. The fresh tomatoes, perfectly fried mozzarella, and balsamic reduction came together beautifully. The mozzarella was cooked just right--not overdone to the point where all the cheese oozes out--which made for a great bite every time. Cindy ordered the Scallop Risotto, served in a lemon butter wine sauce. The risotto had a great consistency--not watery at all--and the scallops were perfectly tender. The flavors were fresh, rich, and well-balanced. I chose the Frutti di Mare Risotto, featuring sautéed mussels, clams, jumbo shrimp, crab meat, broccoli rabe, and cherry tomatoes. This dish exceeded my expectations. Every piece of seafood was tender and flavorful. I did encounter a little sand in a couple of the mussels, which can occasionally happen with shellfish, but it certainly wasn't enough to take away from an otherwise fantastic meal. To finish the evening, the staff brought out a celebratory chocolate birthday cake for Cindy. It was incredibly moist with a delicious cream cheese filling--the perfect ending to a memorable birthday dinner. One final tip: if you decide to take a walk around the grounds after dinner, keep an eye out... you might find someone taking a nap outside. Overall, Riverwinds delivered excellent food, outstanding service, and a beautiful atmosphere. Between the attentive staff, delicious seafood, and scenic river views, we'll definitely be back.

And, the plates remained once we hurriedly ate the food the "airline" pushed in front of us. The soups were delicious with the French Dip layered with thinly sliced beef (It was called a French Dip after all.) soaking in a rich onion influced broth accompanied by a soaked brioche crouton covered in melty provolone. The Butternut Squash Bisque flavored with asiago was definitely a winner too but before our soup course was 1/2 finished and with our Mediterranean Platter's tabouleh still showing its colors and enough hummus to later lead our waitress to ask if we wanted more pita ... the first entree was added to our crowded table. Not sure where the blame lies for the hurried appearance of plates but we were looking forward to a special evening out ... a birthday dinner choice ... a restaurant specializing in small plate dining should be well accustomed to serving diners in a relaxed manner. Upon their arrival I looked at the Schnitzel Medallions but wanted to enjoy the French Dip soup ... I knew the temperature of the food would be decreasing but the soup was so good. Why in the world would the first plate be served while we were enjoying our soup literally with soup spoons in or hands ... no, I did not hear that our flight was boarding ... we were in no rush but we were being rushed. So, now on the small table were our two soup bowls that we were finishing ... the plate still holding quite a bit of our Mediterranean Platter (We did expect to have some small talk after all it was a birthday celebration so we had leisurely started eating this appetizer.), we had the plates that we were expected to eat off of (Mine still had hummus and tabouleh on it.) and this brand new plate with pork tenderloin and asparagus. Maneuvering food became a needed skill. My dining partner put some schnitzel onto her "eating" plate letting soup cool ... I decided hot soup was more important than hot or even warmish pork so I continued to eat my soup but rushing soup made it less enjoyable. So, I finished my soup squeezing the empty bowl into a limited space on the table ... my "eating plate" was crowded still having hummus on it because I rushed my soup .. my dining partner said "yum the Schnitzel is good" while her soup chilled. I took the serving plate with the remaining Schnitzel and asparagus eating off it since it was the only plate with room. Before I took a bite the sliders arrived further crowding the table. Quickly the Butternut Squash Bisque was finished so that she could eat a hot well maybe warm Crispy Fish Slider ... I was still working on the Schnitzel knowing I was going to eat cold fish. And, as we both kept putting food in our mouths foregoing any conversation the Chicken Primavera arrived and looked picture perfect amidst the crowded table but finally the soup bowls were removed ... there's still hummus and tabloeh from that Mediterranean Platter that we didn't have time to finish and the waitress asks if we would like more pita ... sure ... I had just finished the cold slider and was about to try the chicken primavera. She also then noticed my water glass was almost empty and asked if I wanted a refill ...I did but had been so busy shoving food down my mouth that I just barely noticed I needed water (I actually knew I did but no one ever stopped by to ask.). And, just in case you're wondering... our flight still was not close to taking off from the terminal in this lovely lounge (It really is an attractive restaurant to dine in.) that reminded us of a classic airport lounge but it felt like a hallway fast food eatery. We had come to enjoy a leisurely small plate dinner with good conversation...celebrating a birthday before heading off to the theatre. You might be wondering why there are three stars rather than one. Well, the food was all really tasty. I would say it was delicious even though due to the rush the only food I ate that was hot was my soup. We finally did get back to that Mediterranean Platter and yes, we were given more pita and I wasn't rushed eating it because there was nothing left to be served. Oh, it looks like they have some nice outside seating for warmer days. We skipped the mixed drinks ... they looked really good and other folks seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Out of all of my visits, my favorite is the weekend brunch menu. There are so many yummy things to choose from like the breakfast burrito, the banana Forester French toast, the various of Benedict's including crab, and there were a bunch of various breakfast sandwiches, but the most menu appealing one that I liked is the pork roll. On my last trip I wound getting a chicken brie apples bacon on brioche bread. It was a special of the day. From the moment I bid into it, I knew I would love it for the savoriness, the crisp and sweet tasting bread. There was a side of potatoes... Very nicely seasoned and the perfect crunch to them. On my last visit, it was a total of 10 people in our group and the customer service was great. We were all able to pay with separate checks... Always a perk. The waiter was super super friendly and kept our coffee refills going. Inside it is busy which could lead away from the quiet ambience, but I didn't mind it at all.

We enjoyed a pre-dinner drink at the bar, and we were so impressed by how friendly the bartenders were. They were engaging and social. They set off our evening on a high note! No need to worry if a passing shower makes its way overhead. Steamed clams in white wine and Truffle fries for the table to start. Yum! All entrees are accompanied by a house salad or Ceasar salad. Our group ordered the Limone Chicken, Chicken Sfiziosa, Steak Frite, and the Eggplant Meatballs/Risotto. Everything came out piping hot and delicious. We loved everything. I know their linguine is house made, but not certain of the other pasta varietals. Cheesecake and Cannoli for dessert, because why not? Really nice experience! Our server was sweet and super-efficient. My only question for Filomena's Lakeview is "Where is the lake?" :)

We arrived around 3:45 PM without reservations and they immediately took us to an open table. Iced Waters were instant. Our server was very pleasant and she took our order. Bread quickly followed with two types served: Italian with sesame seeds and focaccia; however I was puzzled that it was served with a plate of hot peppers and onions in a juice. It seemed off but perhaps it's a Jersey thing. I've been all over in Italy and have never seen this. Olive oil would have been fine along with a splash of balsamic vinegar. Either way I skipped bread condiments. Next came the Fried Tomatoes topped with Lump Crab as an appetizer, but once again I had another head-scratcher, as this dish wasn't typical. First the entire dish lacked seasoning plus salt. Then red tomatoes were used and we all know what happens when you try to fry one. It turns to water after you cut it. The lump crab is what probably made this dish pricey but 3 thinly slices of a red tomato caught me off guard. Now for the final knock out: I ordered the Bone In Pork Chop and impressed that I was asked how Iiked it prepared? I said 145 degrees. She said, you mean well- done. I stated no, that would be in a range of medium. Lo and behold, it was fantastically preparation temperature, but it came topped with the same peppers and onions concoction that came out with the bread. I had no idea that this was a smothered situation. My broccolini was also a mystery. The mashed potatoes were mid. Now on to my daughter's chicken Parmesan: She said that it lacked flavor and had to add salt and pepper and also stated that the sauce was loose and there was too little of it. My wife enjoyed her Salmon. Jersey is cooking differently!!!!! I forgot to add: Underneath of my pork chop I discovered a mysterious piece of corn. I had no corn in my dish??????

I have been coming here since they first opened, and it has always been one of my favorite spots. Over the years, the food has consistently been great and I've always had good experiences with the service, which makes yesterday especially disappointing. From the beginning, it seemed like our server had far too many tables and was overwhelmed with the workload. We initially ordered our appetizers, and when she brought them out, we told her we were ready to put in our entrées. She said okay, but then did not return to our table for another 20 minutes to actually take our order. We were left sitting there waiting despite already telling her we were ready to order. I completely understand that restaurants get busy and that servers can be stretched thin. However, the lack of attention to our table made the entire experience frustrating, especially at a restaurant where I've had such consistently good service in the past. Unfortunately, the food was also not up to the quality I've come to expect from Cinder Bar. To make matters worse, after eating there, I became extremely sick with symptoms consistent with food poisoning. I normally wouldn't let one bad experience erase years of positive ones, but between the extremely slow service, disappointing food, and becoming sick afterward, this experience was bad enough that I no longer feel comfortable returning. It's genuinely disappointing because Cinder Bar has been one of my favorite restaurants since they opened, and I have recommended it to others many times. I really hope management looks into both the staffing situation and what may have happened with the food that day, because yesterday's experience was completely different from the Cinder Bar I've known and enjoyed for years.
