Since writing this review, I've been here twice, with each experience being drastically different from each other. In both cases, the interior is simply the kitchen smack dab in the middle along with limited seating around the perimeter of the interior. The counter consists of two kiosks to place your order immediately in front of the main entrance, and you pick up your drinks to the left-hand side of the counter. I believe you can line up near the right-hand side of the counter to taste-test their wide selection of high-quality gelato, each being flavors I haven't seen in gelatos in particular but only in regular soft serve. There's jasmine tea, hazelnut and uji matcha to name a few! There's no noticeable restroom around, so I wonder where patrons and even employees would be redirected to. Given this place was the previous location of a Don't Yell at Me that didn't seem to have traction, Cilo Lab is definitely steeping things up here.
My first visit to this place was on a Monday night close to 8:30pm (thank goodness they open till a little late!) to virtually no line and just a few people inside. This is a stark contrast to when I tried going here on their first soft opening day earlier in the weekend... BAD idea if you hate waiting in hours-long lines, I'll say that much. Most of the tea items were sold out when I checked the kiosks, so I got their uji matcha einspanner with a scoop of jasmine tea gelato. This is served in a pretty big plastic cup with a big opening on top since I got gelato, and sppond and napkins are provided below the counter where you pick drinks up. Very tea-forward since its both uji matcha and jasmine tea, and an oddly soothing pairing too! The gelato didn't melt too fast, and the grassy tones of their ceremonial matcha matched in harmony with the gelato despite both being tea. Safe to say I didn't get a good night's sleep that night but I looooove my tea and would get this again! Service on this day was smooth and fast.
Fast forward to the second visit on that same week on a Friday night around 7:30pm, and my two foodie friends and I encountered nearly the same long lines and crowds as if it was their first soft opening day... and this was after I told them about how my previous visit on Monday had none of those. Welp, patrons were crowding around the outside and inside seating, and a line kept forming way outside the small building with everyone taking their time ordering. Again, a handful of items were sold out during this time as well, but not as much as Monday, so I was able to get something different. Couple interesting things happened with our drinks, however:
- For all our drinks, servers forgot to put our requested gelatos into the cups prior to giving them to us. When I asked for my gelato inside my cup, it was thrown in a sloppy way, with the sides of my cup having gelato on it. This doesn't affect the drink's taste profile, thankfully.
- One of my foodie friends got hazelnut gelato for his drink but he did not get it, and when I asked servers for that hazelnut gelato, they instead gave him a single scoop of uji matcha in a separate cup. Incorrect flavor of gelato but my foodie friend took it in stride and commented on the strong tea-forward earthy tones in the matcha.
For the drinks:
- I ordered the Da Hong Pao milk tea on 50% sweetness. This is VERY tea forward, so I should have gotten it a lot more sweet to balance the bitter. The uji matcha gelato I asked for this drink was the only source of sweet for my drink.
- One of my foodie friends got the phoenix oolong milk tea with uji matcha gelato on 50% sweetness. This one was a lot thicker in taste, and a lot sweeter too if not counting the gelato. I'd get this one the next time I come back here.
- My other foodie friend ordered the creme brulee milk tea with hazelnut gelato (which ended up being uji matcha gelato as well) on 25% sweetness. This should be a LOT sweeter for another visit since even the creme brulee part wasn't sweet enough to balance this even more tea-forward drink.
This place shows a lot of promise, and i appreciate how tea-heavy their drinks are because other milk tea places have been skimping on that and focusing more on being too sweet. I'll have to come earlier to try their other drinks since several of them were sold out for both visits. read more
