Fajita Pack 1

It wasn't that good tbh as you can see in the picture but they charged me $25 for this macaroni and cheese colored rice, and mushy not fresh at all beef I can go to roadhouse down the street and get a fresh steak meal for cheaper

Receipt

I ordered two tacos with grilled onions and peppers only no meat with a side of cheese, sour cream and guacamole at lunch time. When I received the bill, I was charged $15 for fajita dinner. I was also charged individual for the cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. I have been a patron for years but will not return. Very disappointing

Loved the food and drinks at this restaurant. Service was fast drinks were very good and the waiter even had suggestions for the types of margaritas we were ordering. We ordered from the special that night which was fajitas for 2 which was steak and shrimp and it was delicious. I really like the vibe of this place and I've visited this place 3 times the 2 years of come down to Houston.

A FLY!!! Found it my Soupa De Pollo. Don't eat from this place! Unsanitary.

Ordered take out Soupa De Pollo and found a bug in my soup. DO NOT ORDERED FROM HERE.

Chile Con Queso

Went to Cilantros last night for dinner with no expectations. Not from Houston so I had no idea what to expect. We were seated quickly and even with a big party of 10 in the restaurant, we were quickly served and checked up on consistently. The Salsa was good, Queso didn't pass the eye test but wasn't bad. And the Enchiladas also were pretty good. Not the most amount of rice and beans, but not a big deal. Overall a good experience with solid mexican food.

Came here August 2012 with a few friends on a Sunday night at 7:30 and found the restaurant was about 1/4 full. Parking is a little tricky but very ample. It is not obvious if this is the first time you have been here so you might actually end up going through the back door which could pass as the front (Hooter's side) or the actual front door (I 45 North side). Could not comment on any greeting since my friends were already there but we had to move to another table to accommodate 7 of us but there was a hostess that I noticed who cordially sat people as they came in the front. There is a patio on the "back" side if you call it that with rustic iron material. I think there were about 8 tables. The chips, red and green salsa seemed pretty good. I saw where somebody said it was oily but I did not detect an Exxon spill. The sauce was thick, not runny, plus! As far as the hit or miss service we had a decent server. Nothing stellar but nothing bad about him. As far as filling drinks I think they team work here because a lady filled my water up 3 times while he served the food. It wasn't that busy so a nice touch would have been for at least a manager to come around the tables and see if everything was ok. No special touch, that is ok, they do not realize that little stuff like that goes a long ways in the way customers view your place. You either care of you really don't about clientele returning or not. The food: I had the bean and cheese nachos (12 for $6.99) which were ok except for the movie theater quality cheese, I don't care too much for translucent cheese too much but if I closed my eyes it was salvageable. Evidence picture posted bin KCUY 2.72 A 97A Exhibit A. I originally ordered the 10 chicken wings since I would have rather gone to Hooters for their wings, yes there are people that go to those places for the wings and not the eye candy. My friend ordered 10 and so did I. With my luck the server came back and said they were out of wings, ruh ruh ruh ruhhhhhhh.... Ok, that is when I ordered the bean and cheese nachos. The two chicken wings that my friend gave to me were dark! Like they did not change the oil for a couple of weeks. I was going to be forgiven since I was craving breaded chicken wings (I asked if they were breaded or birthday skinned, reply was like Hooters, NOT!). I so wanted to give the benefit of the doubt but patooey, I felt like I was a dog chewing on one of those toys you buy at PetSmart. To not draw attention I continued dipping into the ranch dressing that is provided thinking to my self "big juicy bounch bite of tapioca, large chicken flavored gummy bear", didn't quite curve my brain to let me think that but it helped a tad. Note: Don't order the chicken wings. I must say however that these are not your itty bitty Buffalo Wild Wings chicken parts, these are like your Chinese restaurant size where they are as big as your baby siblin's fist. Ambience, pretty well lit, not sun in your eye lit but you ever been to those annoying places where the lights are turned down so low as to try to create a romantic ambiance that you can't see the menu without using your phone as a light? Been there, done that, even for Mexican restaurants they like doing that for some reason. Plenty of lighting here, the laminated menus will have you shifting a little bit because the reflection will render you Asian........er you'll squint a little. Water does not taste like fish water. Had to say that because every once in a while I'd get a glass of iced water that tasted like it got ran down the backside of someone's sweaty back or something (ex gf, don't ask). The deal killer, remember when I said this is outside of Houston city limits? I totally forgot, guess I am spoiled to Bellaire, midtown, downtown etc. We kept on smelling smoke, arrggh, I have sensitive nose and can smell a burp a block away, this does not help. Maybe we should have asked but I can't remember when I ever had this problem. Maybe my bad for not asking for a non smoking section but I havn't had to do that in like10 plus years. I asked the server if there was a smoking section because I do not see anybody lighting up, he pointed to my 5 o'clock....oh ok so this is the non smoking part I am in? He nods....... People............a smoking and non smoking sectioning of restaurant is like the peeing and non peeing section in a public swimming pool.................IT JUST DOES NOT WORK!! The place was not loud, in fact I think we might have been the loudest ones there but we were not obnoxious. You know how you can get in a group and not realize where you are and get out of hand. This place is good for groups. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Tip for new yelpers: I did not know about the "talk" forum of this site until I went to an actual browser yelp.com. You'll find us in the background there. I did not know this when I first started as well.

It was SO good, we ate everything off our plates

The refried beans were rancid the food was sloppily prepared. It looked and tasted like food prepared a week ago and left out to sit.

Mind you, it's a Tuesday night at 9pm. Flautas de pollo were bland AF chicken. Poasted, shredded with no salt to save its life. They could drown the flautas in a green salsa but blandness of the flautas can't be covered. Rice? Basic. Beans? Boring. Underseasoned flautas + basic rice + boring beans = mediocre food Add $50-$60 all in, it's overpriced mediocre food. Had the food been well seasoned, there would have been no food complaints. When a restaurant sends out so so food, it's like tying its own shoe laces and tripping over itself. You had 1 job: prepare your own kitchen menu well. They did not understand the assignment. Houston is full of mediocre tex mex; this place joins the list of one and done places. If you look at the plate where the flautas was served on, the plate is chipped in different places. 3 years in business, they should have new plates rotating in to take out the damaged plates from reaching diners. Now what happened next could create the scene for a future TV show: Dining Room Nightmares. These two bar flies arrived and started narrating their reality tv life which includes fights, arguments, and dumb things they are doing. Shameless, loud AF, unapologetic, very much in their FAFO era. The male bartender egging them on as if he were that enthusiastic bestie, that enables bad life choices. In the spirit of "oh no you didn't girl." hahaha What makes it worse is that these two women are bartender friends. The mentality is "the customer is always right" so that if they are loud, obnoxious, crude, it is what the customer chooses to do. Meanwhile, I was just trying to eat flautas and churros with my mom not trying to become an aspiring Netflix documentarian. Dining Room Nightmares remains a concept, without a TV show pilot. Dining out should not require a documentary to document how LOUD, CRUDE, and how LONG they were misbehaving that evening. We should not need video receipts to capture mayhem in the middle of dinner. Apparently, it's a taste issue to not want to hear 30 minutes of dropping f bombs, b&:&;, and all manner of expletive language. I am not expecting Disney standards, but basic common consideration to diners. For fact checking purposes, the facts from this diner remain: - Tap water - Mediocre food. - Overpriced - Mismanagement of bad drinkers Juan, later goes on to says the water is filtered. The comedy writes itself: "The water filters are sooooo old, you cannot tell the water is filtered." hahaha. It shows how restaurant maintenance is cutting corners and skipping basics. Come on now, all it takes is 1-3 sips to know tap water is tap water. No PhD in water needed.

The world is full of Mexican restaurants…read more Most are some version of Tex-Mex in a family-friendly, relatively similar environment. Nothing wrong with that. Mexican Sugar breaks that mold completely. This is the most legit, wonderful, bougie, over-the-top Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. This was my second trip to Mexican Sugar. The first was in Grapevine. After this visit to the Montrose location, I have officially decided that when I am in Texas, I will seek these places out. They are that good. First, dress up. I doubt there is an actual dress code, but this is not the place where I am showing up looking like I just finished mowing the yard. Come here to be seen. Come here to show out a little. The place is beautiful and has that kind of vibe. Second, the drinks. Hell yes. Fancy, creative, excellent, and impressive enough for even the person who has seen every ridiculous cocktail presentation imaginable. And then there is the food. My God, the food. The salsa and queso are legit AF. The street corn is heaven in a bowl. Get several orders. I am serious. One is not enough. The carne asada was amazing. Honestly, I could keep going, but at some point this review is just going to become me yelling about how much I love Mexican Sugar. I LOVE MEXICAN SUGAR. OK, YOU GET THE IDEA. WHY AM I YELLING? BACK TO THE REVIEW.... Service was excellent too. The place is huge and was absolutely packed, but our server stayed attentive and the food came out surprisingly quickly. Make a reservation. Park in the nearby garage. Dress nice. Order the drinks. Get the street corn. Then get more street corn. Who is ready for another trip to Houston? I'll book the reservation at Mexican Sugar.

Service was quick - we ordered and our dishes came out in at a steady pace. Now the guacamole, so simple but one of the best guac I've tasted in awhile. Tiradito de Hamachi - a Crudo with green apple ponzu, pickled jazz apples and chile and lime. So fresh and yummy! Hearts of Palm salad was refreshing and packed with so much flavor. We enjoyed it so much. Steak and Eggs had to is amazing sauce and was cooked perfectly. Masa cornbread was fantastic with a chorizo gravy. The texture was wonderful on them. This was probably the worst restaurant experience I have had in a while…read more Let me preface this by saying I am a gm in the restaurant industry while my husband has been in management and serving for the last 15 years. This is an industry we strive to make better and create memorable experiences for customers. Tonight was definitely an experience to remember but it was not a positive one. To start my mother in law and sister In law arrived at 730 while my husband, mother and myself arrived at 745. I missed the server (Aisha's) greet which would given me more insight Into her ability to be personable because when we arrived she was anything but. Hardly a smile, but she did make sure to try to upsell which I did appreciate as a manager. It seemed she was more of an order taker than an experience maker which is fine but for a restaurant like candante I would hope you would seek out more than the bare minimum. I wish I could say the service was the only issue but it was not. The story continues. They sat us at table 12 which was the second booth from the back which was fine since we couldn't see the bathrooms but not ideal. Apparently this was the area for the servers to do side work and start closing first. I understand rolling silverware but you don't have to bang it right behind us while I'm trying to take a bite of my fajita taco. As soon as I did take a bite I realized the beans were ice cold and to my dismay my mothers food was cold as well. She asked them to heat it up after waiting for ten minutes to flag our waitress which we never found which was why we flagged a busboy. Not to mention our food was delivered without tortillas, prebussing or plates which we also had to flag a busboy for. The waitress did not come back until about fifteen minutes after we recieved our food and when she did she made sure to ask if we want any more food because the kitchen is closing. We only had our food for fifteen minutes and it felt like she was rushing us to get out. When we told her no she proceeded to come back at 837 and ask again. At this point I couldn't eat. They were stacking chairs to my left while people were sweeping to my right and in front of me I have a waitress that is making us feel like we are not only inconveniencing her but a bother. Mind you she was not rude but In these situations you need to be able to bounce back and gauge your audience. I am disappointed to say the least especially because I never saw a manager nor did they stop by once. It's important to touch all of your tables to ensure they are being served up to standards. We did end up staying until 945 because people were staring at us directly In front of our table. I understand labor and how cuts work but that's the name of the game. Sometimes I have let customers stay hour to an hour and a half after we close. It's not ideal but my needs are not more important than my customers. I really hope you all work on your service standards, table touching, and food standards as well.
