Well, I had to pick a place I'd been to recently to be my 200th review, and I guess this is it. I figured it was fitting because I've been going to Chuy's for over 10 years (the first time that I went to Chuy's [which was around the time of the Jenna Bush incident], some kindly relatives of mine took me out for a meal, knowing that I was a "starving" college student living in the UT dorms, who'd therefore really appreciate something like it).
Anyhow, these days when my husband and I are in Austin Chuy's is usually too crowded to go, and since we only go out to eat in Austin once or twice a week at most and usually want to try new/different things, we don't make it to Chuy's much. Before this week the last time we went was over a year ago.
Happy to report that Chuy's is still pretty good and pretty cheap. We went on a Wednesday night at around 7:30, and though the place was near-full (if there were empty tables at all they weren't empty for long), we didn't have to wait for a table.
Service was generally efficient ... our waiter stopped by our table many times to check on us, and attempted to anticipate our needs (such as drink refills for my diet coke and my husband's iced tea), though there was one time I had to get a chip refill for myself.
When we sat down, we were, of course, given chips and salsa. I was surprised that the salsa we were given was sort of a "wet pico" rather than the famous thin ketchup-y salsa of yore. We liked the pico-ish stuff okay though it was a bit spicy. I would've asked for the creamy jalapeno sauce if we weren't getting queso compuesto, but I thought that would probably be enough containers sitting around on our 2-top, so I didn't. The queso compuesto was good, but a bit salty. The thin chips also broke off a bit into it. When I did get up to get more chips, I saw the ketchup-y salsa was available in the chip refill area, so I got some for nostalgia's sake, table space be damned. My husband was happy to see it.
Sometime during the chip/salsa/queso enjoyment time, we ordered. My husband got the chicken chile relleno plate, and I got the deluxe tomatillo enchiladas. The food came out before we finished our queso, which was good since we still had appetites.
Since I've probably been eating at slightly more authentic places, I was at first surprised by the plain, white-meat chicken filling in the enchiladas, but quickly settled back into enjoying an old favorite. The chicken was good if a bit bland (I think I did get one slightly fatty bite, but no big deal), the other components of the enchiladas (sauce and corn tortillas) were great, and the rice and beans were decent though in a small portion. I'd asked the not-our-server guy who brought out the food for two flour tortillas and he'd not come back, but our waiter promptly brought them after I told him what I wanted.
My husband enjoyed his rellenos and said he was glad to finally have a meal at Chuy's that was satisfying without being super-filling. During our meal we finished the queso compuesto we'd ordered for an appetizer, so the saltiness of it must not have bothered us too much.
Our food totaled $30, which I felt was not bad at all for what we got. We were in and out of the place in less than an hour, which could be good or bad depending on what one is wanting. We could've lingered longer though if we'd been enjoying desserts, margaritas, etc., that evening, but those aren't typically things that we do on weeknights.
There are many, many other restaurants to go to in Austin, so it will probably be awhile before we make it back to Chuy's. But we'll definitely be back eventually. read more
