I should've believed the other Yelpers on this one. I figured a classy looking Chinese restaurant in affluent Basking Ridge would be a 5 star experience. WRONG! First I was informed that there is no dining in since COVID (not a big deal, I was planning on taking out anyway). I ordered 2 of my favorites which are usually served without error, hot & sour soup and Singapore Mei Fun. The soup was fine, nothing exceptional, but not terrible like some places screw up. The tofu was a bit too hard in texture, still decent. I don't know what happened to the Singapore Mei Fun however. It tastes like they washed it off in a bucket of water since the curry flavor is almost nonexistent. Even the dingiest cheap Chinese take out joints never fail with this simple noodle entree! It's like they intentionally sabotaged it! I doubt I will be back since I rarely go out to Basking Ridge and if I do I will go to the Indian restaurant across the street which I liked. read more

We moved back into the area into a condo in The Hills. We were looking forward to being able to go to Chu's again. We had gone here regularly about 15 years ago, and we really enjoyed it. We arrived the intention of dining in but it had no atmosphere and the place was empty on a rainy Friday night. The two young women working the counter were unprofessional and not very competent. It took several attempts for them to key in our order correctly and they overcharged me when I went to pay the bill. We ate the food back at our home and it was a disappointment. No flavor and nothing like what good Chinese food should taste like. We will not return unless big changes are made. read more

Heard there is new ownership so had to give it a try, why not?! They do offer DoorDash delivery but why is Bedminster New Jersey the only place in the universe that doesn't deliver? Phone order on Friday evening was a bit like having a bad cellphone connection, but I can work with that. I'm embarrassed by now I cannot order Chinese food in perfect Mandarin dialect. Not sure how long this new ownership took over, but it sounds and feels recent. I walked in the wide open door and the emptiness swamped me. You could hear a fly hitting the window 30 feet away. The decor was based on large, open, unfurnished tile floor. To me, this amplified the emptiness and absence of patrons outside a mature 5:00 couple brazen enough to suggest a bottle of wine could make a airport restroom charm. I am not saying the restaurant even remotely resembles a restroom, it has design potential but so did my freshman college dorm room. But I'm all about the food. This food overall used a lot of heat and oil, a lot of oil. Way too much on all dishes. This is unhealthy cooking as served up this time. New Chu's Cafe badly missed my mark: Hot Spicy Jumbo Shrimp was supposed to have broccoli in it but menu change from on-line or so was one of a few misgivings in the aforementioned order entry process. It was tasty however and the vegetables and spices were good. Fried Rice with pork was overwhelmed with too much oil. Giant chunks of 'the other red meat', in fact Chinese food in general could benefit from use of that new 'non-meat, meat'. The stir fried beef and black pepper had the right flavor profile, very good but again the oil was way too much and the temperature may not have been high enough to actually fry the noodles which would have benefit from the crunch. Too little chunks of beef for a feature dish protein. Tasty but drowned in oil killed the overall dish. We also ordered fried vegetable dumpling. When we got there to pick up our takeout, we were offered a substitute which we selected as Shrimp Dumplings. They were steamed and not Fried, but tasted fishy and not appetizing. Everything was slippery from the phone, to walk-in without greeting, without joy of ownership, no gracious hospitality. More like a take-out joint in a strip mall.... Egg rolls were ok but the cabbage flavor came through more than it deserves to. So wanted to like you. Have been eating Chinese food in New Jersey over 60 years and House of Wong holds high bar locally in Bridgewater. read more

Chu's used to be my favorite restaurant before the new owners, We celebrated birthdays there and even ordered large trays for party's we threw. The new owners changed the menu for the worst. The portions used to be a good size, food was fresh and less greasy, and prices were reasonable. The new owners took away many of the specialty dishes that used to be offered (The crispy spicy shredded beef was always my favorite), they have sold us "their version" of this, which is just breaded soggy pieces of beef fried and put in general tsos sauce, not ANYTHING like the other dish. The portions are now small and the price is significantly higher than it used to be. It's so sad because the previous owners food was dependable, delicious, and the old owners even stayed open when there was power outages during hurricane sandy... Chu's has lunch specials Monday through Saturday - the Saturday lunch specials was an attention grabber for me! The lunch prices are super cheap, so we ordered about 5 specials between the 2 of us. The pictures make it look like you are getting so much food, however... the amount of food you get is like appetizer portion on a smaller plate... pretty much - you get what you pay for. The restaurant is nice, well-lit, and the staff is super friendly. The food was ok... not a fan of either of the 2 shrimp dishes I ordered (small shrimp and not very fresh), the flavor and crisp of the general tso's chicken was really good (although it could be way better if they used more white meat or just less fatty chicken), and the fried rice was flavorful and tasty. My sister does not like Chinese food so she bought a pizza across the street and an employee or manager wouldn't let her eat the pizza inside until me and my party of 10 were going to leave. 2. After an orchestra concert 5 kids and 10 adults ate there. A good place at lunchtime when every special is $7-8 and comes with soup! Reasonably tasty food and fast service in a bright, new restaurant. It's thoroughly Americanized Chinese food but it tasted a-ok to me, I'm not a purist :) We visited at noon on a busy Thursday when the restaurant was nearly full. Instantly we received hot tea, ice water with lime and fried noodles with both duck sauce and spicy mustard. After ordering the soup came quickly, hot and sour was the right consistency, just needed a bit more heat. Our entrees arrived soon after. The eggplant in garlic sauce was promised as spicy, it arrived flat-out mild but with beautiful pieces of eggplant cooked just perfectly. Shrimp lo mein was a huge pile of noodles and a decent amount of shrimp, just needed a few bits of veg or something and it would have been much better. Chicken with garlic was also promised as spicy and arrived not at all spicy, but with a generous amount of celery and scallions. Chu's Cafe, conveniently located off Allen Road in The Hills in Basking Ridge, offers large portions of decent Chinese favorites at a reasonable price. The food is average and the ambience isn't exceptional -- it is located in a New Jersey strip mall, after all -- but the food is freshly prepared. The menu covers most of your expected Americanized versions of Chinese favorites as well as out-of-the-ordinary "specials" with featured ingredients. They make a big fuss out of serving Coke and Diet Coke in the 'authentic' 8 oz glass bottles. They don't offer delivery; be sure to check your order thoroughly when you pick up a take-out order. On more than one occassion, I've gotten home to discover they've left out key ingredients in entrees or forgotten appetizers or entrees altogether -- but, have no fear, they've never forgotten to charge me for them. Worse, when I've called to complain about missing items, they are reluctant to allow me to drive back to pick up the missing items. Most dinner entrees range in price from $10 to $20; lunch specials range from $5.50 to $7. Although slightly more expensive, Ling Ling in Riverwalk is a better option for dining in or take-out. read more

We were looking for a close place to get Chinese and this place fit the bill. We both got the General Tso with Chicken for pick-up. The place was fast for a Saturday night, only 10 minutes. The meal was just okay. I've had General Tso at a lot of places and the sauce didn't taste familiar. I can't put my finger on what the prominent flavor was but I wasn't a huge fan. Best Chinese restaurant in the Basking Ridge/Bedminster area! My fiancé and I had the pleasure to eat here for dinner. We ordered pan fried dumplings as an appetizer, egg drop soup, and the chicken with broccoli in garlic sauce dish. The egg drop soup was delicious, as were both the chicken and broccoli and dumplings. We were greeted with amazing service. Never once had to ask for a refill on our drinks. Complimentary hot tea and healthy fresh oranges for dessert! Highly recommend! Plus... this place is surprisingly the only Chinese food place that delivers! It's a nice restaurant inside, I wish the food is more authentic Chinese dishes for such a decent location and good looking interior, but they are rather tailored for American palates. The dishes almost resemble that of fast food Chinese takeout places, simple dishes, average taste and nothing special, nonetheless we appreciate an option in addition to pizza and Indian cuisine around the plaza, so some variety is better than no variety. There is a sizable Asian community around the area, I would figure Chu's cafe would serve more authentic chinese dishes, for the record, Kong pao chicken or sesame chicken or tangerine chicken and the like aren't authentic Chinese dishes, authentic are the ones with an option of Chinese menu that you can read or you see a lot of Asian ordering without a menu, hah. Ordered a General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Chicken both with brown rice. Nothing else. This was for dinner. The portion size was like lunch size and they gave us 1 box of brown rice. My food was not good at all. Since they changed to new management the food quality has definitely gotten worst. My go to is the chicken and broccoli lunch special.The first time I ordered, I could tell the quality of the chicken is less but this time it was absolutely TERRIBLE! I couldn't even eat one piece. It was rubbery and literally dissolved in my mouth, not sure if it was cooked thoroughly or if it's even really chicken.
