Had their ramen take out . I believe it's new and it's currently not on the printed menu Love- 1. The broth and noodles are packed separate so the noodles doesn't get soggy during transport 2. Great marinate soft boil egg 3. Variety of topping (char siew, soft boiled egg bamboo shots, bean sprouts, nori, fishcake ) To improve - 1. Maybe the ability to customize topping? Like corn, scallions , shiitake mushrooms etc). Not sure how feasible this is since it's not technically a ramen bar I love the ramen bars in NYC and this is a good alternative. Overall for $17, it's a decent lunch and I love those it so close to home ! May do it more often as takeout lunch read more

Chu's Cafe - Tonkasu ramen - Chinese Near Me - Basking Ridge, New Jersey

Don't really understand the negative reviews. It's Chinese food... the type that I would expect from any takeout Chinese restaurant. My family and I were craving Chinese food on a Sunday. Glad to have Chu's Cafe close-by. Ordered sweet and sour chicken, and chicken and string beans. Delish. Will come back for our next craving. read more

I had takeout for the first time in a long while today. Current owner has been here since 2019. Delicious bowl of miso ramen packed up for the short trip home. I see soup dumplings on the menu to try out in the near future read more

Ok food. Tried the ramen. Could be better... service was quick , fair price. If they improve they are in a good location

I should've believed the other Yelpers on this one. I figured a classy looking Chinese restaurant in affluent Basking Ridge would be a 5 star experience. WRONG! First I was informed that there is no dining in since COVID (not a big deal, I was planning on taking out anyway). I ordered 2 of my favorites which are usually served without error, hot & sour soup and Singapore Mei Fun. The soup was fine, nothing exceptional, but not terrible like some places screw up. The tofu was a bit too hard in texture, still decent. I don't know what happened to the Singapore Mei Fun however. It tastes like they washed it off in a bucket of water since the curry flavor is almost nonexistent. Even the dingiest cheap Chinese take out joints never fail with this simple noodle entree! It's like they intentionally sabotaged it! I doubt I will be back since I rarely go out to Basking Ridge and if I do I will go to the Indian restaurant across the street which I liked. read more

I never write reviews. But hadn't been here in awhile. Very pleased. Fresh, spicy and flavorful.

Very good food and service. The ambiance also seemed quite nice. Would def recommend it.

You guys need to control your pricing! $20 for pepper, steak and onions is insane I only go there because it's the only game in town but now you price yourself out of wanting to go there This restaurant suffered the wrath of Covid And the wrath of minimum wage. But other restaurants have found away, not to overprice their food. I just ate 5 ounces of beef and an onion for $20 and I will not go back until you guys sort out your pricing. No one was in the restaurant when I got there and I now understand why Too many restaurants are trying to raise prices to make up for lack of participation since Covid it's a formula for failure read more

We moved back into the area into a condo in The Hills. We were looking forward to being able to go to Chu's again. We had gone here regularly about 15 years ago, and we really enjoyed it. We arrived the intention of dining in but it had no atmosphere and the place was empty on a rainy Friday night. The two young women working the counter were unprofessional and not very competent. It took several attempts for them to key in our order correctly and they overcharged me when I went to pay the bill. We ate the food back at our home and it was a disappointment. No flavor and nothing like what good Chinese food should taste like. We will not return unless big changes are made. read more

The Zha Jiang Mian isn't very good after two attempts - I forgot I had ordered it before and ordered it again. Both times it was on the plain side and the noodles were mushy. During the pandemic they were taking plenty of precautions. Quality of other items is about average for take-away Chinese food in the area. read more

Heard there is new ownership so had to give it a try, why not?! They do offer DoorDash delivery but why is Bedminster New Jersey the only place in the universe that doesn't deliver? Phone order on Friday evening was a bit like having a bad cellphone connection, but I can work with that. I'm embarrassed by now I cannot order Chinese food in perfect Mandarin dialect. Not sure how long this new ownership took over, but it sounds and feels recent. I walked in the wide open door and the emptiness swamped me. You could hear a fly hitting the window 30 feet away. The decor was based on large, open, unfurnished tile floor. To me, this amplified the emptiness and absence of patrons outside a mature 5:00 couple brazen enough to suggest a bottle of wine could make a airport restroom charm. I am not saying the restaurant even remotely resembles a restroom, it has design potential but so did my freshman college dorm room. But I'm all about the food. This food overall used a lot of heat and oil, a lot of oil. Way too much on all dishes. This is unhealthy cooking as served up this time. New Chu's Cafe badly missed my mark: Hot Spicy Jumbo Shrimp was supposed to have broccoli in it but menu change from on-line or so was one of a few misgivings in the aforementioned order entry process. It was tasty however and the vegetables and spices were good. Fried Rice with pork was overwhelmed with too much oil. Giant chunks of 'the other red meat', in fact Chinese food in general could benefit from use of that new 'non-meat, meat'. The stir fried beef and black pepper had the right flavor profile, very good but again the oil was way too much and the temperature may not have been high enough to actually fry the noodles which would have benefit from the crunch. Too little chunks of beef for a feature dish protein. Tasty but drowned in oil killed the overall dish. We also ordered fried vegetable dumpling. When we got there to pick up our takeout, we were offered a substitute which we selected as Shrimp Dumplings. They were steamed and not Fried, but tasted fishy and not appetizing. Everything was slippery from the phone, to walk-in without greeting, without joy of ownership, no gracious hospitality. More like a take-out joint in a strip mall.... Egg rolls were ok but the cabbage flavor came through more than it deserves to. So wanted to like you. Chu's Cafe - a variety of asian food - Chinese Near Me - Basking Ridge, New Jersey

If you haven't been in a while it's time to go back! Everything was delicious and exactly as expected. Pepper steak, fried rice, steamed shrimp, very fresh and large portions. Not greasy or too salty at all. I'm so glad I tried it again! Definitely give them a try or another try! read more

Possibly the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten! The sesame beef was supposed to have broccoli in it. There was not a trace of broccoli, and I'm not even sure the meat was beef! The shrimp fried rice was gummy and tasteless. I will not be going back! read more

Chu's used to be my favorite restaurant before the new owners, We celebrated birthdays there and even ordered large trays for party's we threw. The new owners changed the menu for the worst. The portions used to be a good size, food was fresh and less greasy, and prices were reasonable. The new owners took away many of the specialty dishes that used to be offered (The crispy spicy shredded beef was always my favorite), they have sold us "their version" of this, which is just breaded soggy pieces of beef fried and put in general tsos sauce, not ANYTHING like the other dish. The portions are now small and the price is significantly higher than it used to be. It's so sad because the previous owners food was dependable, delicious, and the old owners even stayed open when there was power outages during hurricane sandy... PLEASE, EITHER CONSULT THE OLD MANAGEMENT OR ASK THEM TO TAKE BACK OVER BECAUSE YOU RUINED MY FAVORITE CHINESE RESTAURANT IN TOWN! read more

Chu's has lunch specials Monday through Saturday - the Saturday lunch specials was an attention grabber for me! The lunch prices are super cheap, so we ordered about 5 specials between the 2 of us. The pictures make it look like you are getting so much food, however... the amount of food you get is like appetizer portion on a smaller plate... pretty much - you get what you pay for. The restaurant is nice, well-lit, and the staff is super friendly. The food was ok... not a fan of either of the 2 shrimp dishes I ordered (small shrimp and not very fresh), the flavor and crisp of the general tso's chicken was really good (although it could be way better if they used more white meat or just less fatty chicken), and the fried rice was flavorful and tasty. Overall, I would return again to try other lunch specials - since the prices are so cheap, I consider it like going out for tapas. read more

Chu's Cafe - Saturday lunch specials!! - Chinese Near Me - Basking Ridge, New Jersey

We have tried the food here Time after time. We were hopeful when we saw new Mgmt. The soups were OK; shu Mai was just OK, Lo Mein had no sauce- so basically just pasta, chicken heavily breaded and cut into strange shapes; moo shu tasteless. We won't go again. If Mgmt read reviews they would hire a new team of cooks. We will toss the leftovers. read more

Such a big disappointment, probably the worst Chinese food I had tasted in years, not even comparable to the one you get at the mall or student cafeteria. Everything is so bland without any flavor, forget about spice! Not sure how they are in business within a neighborhood like this. read more

This used to be the BEST Chinese restaurant around. New management took over and it is just terrible. The old Chu's food was incredibly fresh, delicious and the portions were very generous. It was sparkling clean inside and the owners were lovely. If anyone knows where the previous owners went, and if they opened another place, please let all is know. I would be at there new establishment yesterday!!!! read more

A good place at lunchtime when every special is $7-8 and comes with soup! Reasonably tasty food and fast service in a bright, new restaurant. It's thoroughly Americanized Chinese food but it tasted a-ok to me, I'm not a purist :) We visited at noon on a busy Thursday when the restaurant was nearly full. Instantly we received hot tea, ice water with lime and fried noodles with both duck sauce and spicy mustard. After ordering the soup came quickly, hot and sour was the right consistency, just needed a bit more heat. Our entrees arrived soon after. The eggplant in garlic sauce was promised as spicy, it arrived flat-out mild but with beautiful pieces of eggplant cooked just perfectly. Shrimp lo mein was a huge pile of noodles and a decent amount of shrimp, just needed a few bits of veg or something and it would have been much better. Chicken with garlic was also promised as spicy and arrived not at all spicy, but with a generous amount of celery and scallions. Even the room is nice, twenty-foot ceilings and well lit by very tall windows, with Picasso prints on the wall. Not exactly typical Chinese but I'd come back for lunch in a heartbeat. read more

Chu's Cafe, conveniently located off Allen Road in The Hills in Basking Ridge, offers large portions of decent Chinese favorites at a reasonable price. The food is average and the ambience isn't exceptional -- it is located in a New Jersey strip mall, after all -- but the food is freshly prepared. The menu covers most of your expected Americanized versions of Chinese favorites as well as out-of-the-ordinary "specials" with featured ingredients. They make a big fuss out of serving Coke and Diet Coke in the 'authentic' 8 oz glass bottles. They don't offer delivery; be sure to check your order thoroughly when you pick up a take-out order. On more than one occassion, I've gotten home to discover they've left out key ingredients in entrees or forgotten appetizers or entrees altogether -- but, have no fear, they've never forgotten to charge me for them. Worse, when I've called to complain about missing items, they are reluctant to allow me to drive back to pick up the missing items. Most dinner entrees range in price from $10 to $20; lunch specials range from $5.50 to $7. Although slightly more expensive, Ling Ling in Riverwalk is a better option for dining in or take-out. read more

I have some complaints 1. My sister does not like Chinese food so she bought a pizza across the street and an employee or manager wouldn't let her eat the pizza inside until me and my party of 10 were going to leave. 2. After an orchestra concert 5 kids and 10 adults ate there. The kids were talking in an appropriate voice level but yet the employees yelled at the kids and said that they could not talk but only whisper. read more

Best Chinese restaurant in the Basking Ridge/Bedminster area! My fiancé and I had the pleasure to eat here for dinner. We ordered pan fried dumplings as an appetizer, egg drop soup, and the chicken with broccoli in garlic sauce dish. The egg drop soup was delicious, as were both the chicken and broccoli and dumplings. We were greeted with amazing service. Never once had to ask for a refill on our drinks. Complimentary hot tea and healthy fresh oranges for dessert! Highly recommend! Plus... this place is surprisingly the only Chinese food place that delivers! We were looking for a close place to get Chinese and this place fit the bill. We both got the General Tso with Chicken for pick-up. The place was fast for a Saturday night, only 10 minutes. The meal was just okay. I've had General Tso at a lot of places and the sauce didn't taste familiar. I can't put my finger on what the prominent flavor was but I wasn't a huge fan. We may try again but I'll try something different. read more

Disappointed by the food. Would not order again. Got the hot and sour soup which did not have enough sour taste and a very strange looking mushroom (or pork?) thing I couldn't decide what it was. It was also too oily. Chicken Lomein was ok but too oily for my taste and not enough vegetables. Broccoli with brown sauce was also just average. read more

This place is an absolute rip off! The people who work here are rude. The prices they charge are outrageous and their food is not good. Ordered a General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Chicken both with brown rice. Nothing else. This was for dinner. The portion size was like lunch size and they gave us 1 box of brown rice. All this for $26...get the F out of here...and their food made me very sick the next day. Place is not good. I am not sure how they get away with the prices they charge. You need to venture out of the area to get better, cheaper priced Chinese food. Very, very disappointing...Not going back...ever. read more

If your dining in the staff is great and accommodating. If your ordering out you need to have patience. Also if your ordering food to go I would highly recommend calling vs. showing up. We waited about 15 minutes before they would even take out to go order as all the phone calls had priority. I've always enjoyed the food and the dishes come in a good portion and are reasonably priced. They offer all the traditional Chinese dishes. read more

I had high hopes based on some of the reviews. In response to Dan L, there is not much chinese food in the area, so this could be the best, but it is not giving them much credit. I ordered the Lake Tung Ting shrimp, $13.95. The amount of shrimp was good, the veggies were crisp and seemed fresh. The amount of oil in the sauce was outrageous! If I eat here again I will be sure to request the dish is made with a lot less oil. I was hoping for a bigger portion size based on the price. But, given the area, smaller portion/higher price is to be expected. Next time I will drive to the other side of rt 22 and get take out from a hole in the wall. read more

This is not a barrage of insults but I must say for the interested consumer, Do not buy the sesame chicken if you want viagra hard, nearly inedible chicken. Just saying. Do not attempt to buy the pork wonton appetizer if you wish for an uneventful tasteless snack. ** It was incredibly disappointing dipping it into the what was a disgrace to vinegar dipping sauce that left a watery flavorless presence in my mouth. And the egg rolls were equally flavorless and undercooked (not crispy). I struggled to give two stars. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any good or "better than expected" Chinese around us. I think that's just the short hand of the draw in this town of bedminster. The Golden Palace which is located nearby (I'm sure the reader knows what I'm talking about) isn't quality Chinese and they are terrible about giving extra duck sauce STILL is better. At least their food contains some flavor. 2/5 Stars because the Can of Coke was the best part of my meal. read more

I like the modern ambiance high ceilings and lots of large windows for a wide open feeling...I had the sizzling chicken with broccoli and vegetables ..the chicken was very good tender and tasty ...I would definitely recommend Chu's...my only recommendation for the owners are to play some nice jazz to give a lift to mood, read more

It's a nice restaurant inside, I wish the food is more authentic Chinese dishes for such a decent location and good looking interior, but they are rather tailored for American palates. The dishes almost resemble that of fast food Chinese takeout places, simple dishes, average taste and nothing special, nonetheless we appreciate an option in addition to pizza and Indian cuisine around the plaza, so some variety is better than no variety. There is a sizable Asian community around the area, I would figure Chu's cafe would serve more authentic chinese dishes, for the record, Kong pao chicken or sesame chicken or tangerine chicken and the like aren't authentic Chinese dishes, authentic are the ones with an option of Chinese menu that you can read or you see a lot of Asian ordering without a menu, hah. For reference, nearby places like Canton palace, Fortune Cookies serve very authentic Chinese dishes. read more
