MaFisa Fish and Chips

4 Stars For Father's Day, my wife graciously agreed to visit Chulla's Café, an African-inspired restaurant that had been on my must-try list for quite some time. Before relocating to Rocklin, Chulla's earned a reputation as one of the top dining destinations in the Sacramento area, so I was eager to see how it would settle into its new home. We arrived early and were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we walked through the door. The ambiance was inviting and relaxed, creating the perfect setting for a leisurely Father's Day lunch. As a nice touch, we were offered a sample of their hibiscus tea, which was refreshing, flavorful, and served complimentary. Small gestures like that go a long way in creating a memorable dining experience. Wanting to embrace the culinary adventure, I followed the hostess's recommendation and ordered the Boya Jambalaya Stew. The dish featured a medley of shrimp, cod, catfish, peas, corn, green beans, and coastal spices, served alongside rice and grilled vegetables. While it wasn't a traditional jambalaya, it delivered its own unique flavor profile. The seafood was plentiful, the spices were well-balanced, and it was both hearty and satisfying. My palate thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My wife chose the Mafisa Fish and Chips, which included two pieces of cod served with fries and slaw. It was a solid, well-prepared meal, but in hindsight, she probably should have ventured into one of Chulla's specialty dishes. The unique African-inspired menu is what sets this restaurant apart, and that's where the real food adventure seems to be. Overall, Chulla's Café is absolutely worth a visit. The owners and staff clearly put significant effort into creating a welcoming atmosphere and a distinctive dining experience. As they continue establishing themselves in their new Rocklin location, they deserve support from diners looking to try something beyond the ordinary. If you're willing to step outside your comfort zone and explore new flavors, Chulla's is a great place to start.

Chulla's in Rocklin is open. Famous hibiscus tea so crisp and refreshing ready to go - try it you'll be back. Proprietor's on site and very friendly with good service. Very clean restaurant. Lots of patio with shade and without. Menu is breakfast items, burgers, seafood, chicken strips, stew, wraps, and salad's. We had the fish & chips and craft burger. Very satisfying. Had onion rings too - very crispy.

Burger was huge and delicious! Homemade Hibiscus tea is phenomenal! They just recently reopened in Rocklin from their North Highlands location so it was a little quiet during lunch. But service was quick. Definitely can see this place getting busy once more people know about it!

Chulla's Café recently relocated from North Highlands to The Plaza At Stanford Ranch in Rocklin, CA. They have an extensive online menu offering local and African cuisine that is absolutely fantastic. Chulla's owner, Tomba, is a very pleasant and approachable guy. We had the pleasure of meeting him and several of his family members who also work at the restaurant while we were there. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Lotsa smiles. We dropped in for lunch on a weekday. My wife had the Breakfast Burrito and I had the Crafter Burger with onion rings. Both were delicious with large portions. We also were treated to the special Hibiscus Tea that is made in house with 7 different spices. Yum. Next time you are in the area, I highly recommend Chulla's Café. They are open from 7am to 10 pm Wednesday thru Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy.

Chulla's Cafe made the #3 spot on Yelp's Top 50 Places to eat in the Sacramento area for 2022! After seeing them on the list and reading some of the reviews I knew I had to try their food. As I walked in I was greeted by multiple people and welcomed with smiles. They asked me if I had been in before and after telling them it was my first time they offered me a sample of their amazing Hibiscus tea. It's unlike anything I've had before, but reminds me of a more refreshing (and complex) apple cider. On their website it's noted that the Hibiscus tea is "brewed in-house and spiced with 12 secret spices that evoke jamaica, or sorrel, drinks enjoyed by the African diaspora - yet it is truly unique to Chulla's." I ended up ordering a big cup of the Hibiscus tea and the Hungry Lion Burger. I knew I was going to have two patties on my burger, but I wasn't ready for how big they would be. The burger was huge and had the two patties, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, onion rings, slices bacon, cheddar and Swiss cheeses. It was seasoned perfectly and cooked the way you prefer (I chose medium rare). It also came with some amazing house made fries. I ended up taking more than half my burger home and they refilled my tea before I left, which I thought was super generous of them! After visiting and meeting the amazing owners and staff and trying the food it's clear why so many Yelpers have rated Chulla's five stars! I also heard they're looking to open two more locations, and one of them will be in downtown. I'm excited to have a spot closer to me to get this delicious food, but I'll definitely be back to this original location again soon.

Chicken shawarma and lion King burger to go
Alyssa Mae C.

Yup, my burger loving husband had to get that hungry lion King as soon as we found out about it. I opted for the other popular chicken shawarma based on reviews. Both were a sight to behold and a dream to devour. Medium doneness is probably enough for the meat patties. The onions were on the stronger side in my opinion. The side sauce was great with the fries or poured right into the entree. Looking forward to coming back for more!

We were in the area so decided to try this out as we had gotten it once when it was on Doordash. It's located in a plaza so no parking issues! There were indoor seating, and the staff were extremely friendly. Tamba was welcoming, engaging, and a funny guy. He gave us samples of the Jamaica drink, which had interesting flavors and was refreshing! So we ordered one and he told us to drink some while we wait for our food, and he'll refill it for us before we leave! Super nice of him! We ordered the Beef Shawarma and Beef Sandwich. Tamba asked if we want spicy sauce and gave us some! The spicy sauce was pretty good! Both entrees were delicious and filling. The food were cheap too! Will definitely return!

Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon

Fantastic customer service. That point is what should be emphasized when reviewing this cafe. The three crew members working that morning checked on us often as to how our morning was going so far. Tamba, the owner was pleasantly conversant (socially distanced with his mask on) and encouraged us to return and sample the other Afro-Caribbean entrees available for lunch and dinner. He also explained that the name Chulla's was his grandma's. The missus was craving for pancakes this chilly spring morning so we decided to go to this highly rated gem in the McLellan AFB area among the other brunch choices in this part of Sactown. And what a great choice it was. Hers Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon. Fluffy and savory combined with the butter and syrup His Chulla's Signature Omelet (egg white option) with avocado slices and roasted potatoes. This entree was enhanced by the sauces and the crispy spuds. Not a fan of potatoes in general but these taters were seasoned perfectly and we gobbled them up. Ours Fresh Hibiscus Tea. Refreshing, crisp and perfect spiciness. After tasting the sample provided by Tamba we decided to get it to-go. Don't forget to try the house hot sauce which will make your meal experience even better. It's quite a drive from us but we're definitely going to return.

I discovered they had moved to a permanent location in Roseville, so I was anxious to try them (again). It's definitely the same restaurant, as Samerwit (perhaps the owner) was our waitress. I ordered the Mini Combo, substituting Lamb, along with cabbage & greens for my veggies. The Lamb Tibs was well cooked (moist) and plentiful, and the sauce was tasty. The two veggie dishes were very good and flavorful. My husband ordered the Vegan combo. He enjoyed all 5 dishes, and felt that unlike some Ethiopian vegs he's had in the past, each dish had its own unique flavor. His least favorite typically is the collard greens, but this time he added a bit of Berbera spice from the shaker on the table, and he loved that one, too. The only slight disappointment for him was the beets and potato dish, which last time was his favorite, but this time seemed a bit on the dry side. But still very delicious. Service was exceptionally pleasant and kind. The food took a while to arrive (about 25-30 minutes). But it's been my experience that Ethiopian food is often a bit slower, so we were prepared to wait. I uploaded photos of a handful of menu pages, since the prices on their website are old. Unfortunately, even their menu is a bit outdated in places, since it had my Mini Combo at $16.50, but the current price turned out to be $17.50. A great experience!

Then the wait for our food seemed like forever! Well, to be honest, we got our food in 52 minutes. The meats in the platter were: beef, chicken, lamb. My favorite was the chicken. The injeera was too sour for my liking but somehow goes well with the dishes. We picked 4 different veggies but only got 3 of our choice and the other 1 was a random pick by the kitchen staff. The service was friendly!

I visited Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant in Sacramento, CA [1346 Fulton Ave] on Tuesday, 09/08/26,…read morearound 8:00 PM. I was so excited to come back to this restaurant because it has been a long while. When I attempted to stop here many months ago, it was under remodeling at the time. I was truly impressed and amazed by the enhancement of the ambiance. The dining furniture and the decorations all had a contemporary, inviting feel. The entertainment aspect of hearing Ethiopian music from the TV screen was a nice touch. For dinner, I ordered the following: - Meat Combo for One (Proteins: spicy chicken stew, spicy cubed beef stew, cubed beef stew, minced beef stew) - Side of Cabbage Stew (Ye-Atkilt Wot) I made slight modifications to the meat combo platter. Instead of receiving the minced beef stew, I asked for 2x spicy chicken stew. The presentation of the dish looked completely different from what I was used to in the past. I loved how this plate included not only the four proteins, cabbage stew, and injera, but also new additions of the house salad and one boiled egg. This offering was such an incredible switch-up. All of the food was incredibly palatable and flavorful. My taste buds were positively tantalized. Because I loved the Cabbage Stew / Ye-Atkilt Wot so much, I ordered an additional side. It was served with two extra injeras. The injeras served here were prepared to perfection, and not too sour. Dinner came out to be about ~$30, with tax included. They offer a slight discount if paying with cash. Otherwise, each transaction will be charged a credit card fee. I'm still a huge fan of Ethiopian cuisine, especially supporting this restaurant. The food just hits every single time! Undoubtedly, I will be returning again and again.

It's in a part of town I don't frequent, but the inside was very nice. I really liked the decor, seating, and ambiance. We were seated and given water and menus right away. The service was hands-off throughout the meal, which I personally didn't mind. I ordered the meat platter so I could try several dishes, including Alicha Minchet Abish Wot, Kay Wot, Ye-Doro Wot, Alicha Wot, and injera. In hindsight I don't think I received the cabbage stew listed with the platter, which was a little disappointing, but I can't say for sure since I'm still learning the different dishes. My favorite was the Ye-Doro Wot, a rich and spicy chicken stew with a drumstick, but everything tasted fresh and had great flavor and depth. I was hoping for the traditional round platter presentation I saw on other reviews, but everything was served close together and blended into one another. The presentation could've been better, but the food was amazing. The platter says it serves one, but I got two full meals out of it, so it could easily be shared. The leftovers were even richer and more flavorful the next day. I also ordered the tej after first discovering it in London and was very happy to see it here. It was sweet and refreshing while still having that distinct yeasty, fermented flavor. Overall, it was a fantastic meal and a great value for the amount of food. The menu is extensive, and although I didn't always know exactly what I was eating, it was all delicious. I'd definitely come back.
