    CP's OG #3, $16, delicious!

Delicious, high-quality Bahn Mi sandwich from the Slanted Door restaurant group. Had the CP's OG #3. Great flavor and reasonable price for the quality. Excellent service from staff, too. Want to try the Mackerel and Crispy Pork Belly next.

From the first time we stepped into Chuck's Takeaway, we knew we would be back again! We enjoyed the varied selection of sandwiches!

You know, there are days I want a Vietnamese sandwich and I can easily buy five of them for $20 easily in San Jose. I can buy about the same in San Francisco at the fabulous and iconic Saigon Sandwich. But there are days when I want a super gourmet or high quality Vietnamese sandwich and Chuck's Takeaway offers that. I used to order the Vietnamese sandwich aka banh mi, a lot at Charles Phan's Out the Door restaurants back in the past. I have gone to Chuck's Takeaway twice now and it is not cheap but the ingredients are definitely high-quality. I've had the CP's #3 and also mom's meatballs and both are amazing. CP #3 has a really good flavor to it and I would prefer this one over the meatballs just because the meatball sandwich is quite soggy after just even 5 minutes. I had both sandwiches in the car immediately so that I can eat them fresh and experience the flavors immediately. Yes, the sandwiches are pricey and they do include a 15% service charge, so please take note of that if you do visit this shop. It makes it one of the most expensive Vietnamese sandwiches in the Bay Area, but it's worth it if you want to splurge. I do want to try the other sandwiches and cannot wait. Parking is not easy in the area and you could be circling around for quite a while lol. But anyways, the shop also offers different drinks but they are always sold out every time I want to try some of the drinks there, especially the Thai iced tea. They also sell different sauces, cookbooks and other snacks inside the shop to add with your sandwiches. Now I got to work hard so that I can buy their other sandwiches LOL.

Ordered via Doordash! I got the vietnamese iced coffee and the C.P.ms No. 3 Sandwich, which is their sandwich that's closest to the classic banh mi. Although expensive for banh mi, you'd be paying this amount for Italian deli sandwiches, so don't think too much about that... They make their vietnamese baguette in-house and it's super delicious! The outside is crisp though the inside is fluffy. My biggest gripe with banh mi is that typically the baguette scratches the roof of my mouth, but that wasn't the case here (which I LOVE!) They give fresh herbs and generous portions of meat. The vietnamese iced coffee was pretty strong and bitter, and I wish there was an option to make it on the sweeter side by adjusting the level of condensed milk.

Chuck's Takeaway is perhaps a misnomer as in reality it is the creation of Charles Pham, chef of the Slanted Door. We got the Japanese style egg salad. It consisted of fluffy milk bread, filled with egg salad and adorned with chives. It does make a great IG post, but the sandwich was just ok - it wasn't too rich or flavorful and the flavors were nothing special. I liked the crunch of celery, but I think it lacked the pinch of sugar that Japanese egg salad usually would have to balance out the salt. The baguettes are excellent and made in house! I loved the peppery head cheese and pork cha. This was boosted with the salty chicken liver pate, which was buttery and generously seasoned! These sandwiches were jam packed too with cucumber and chopped herbs (strong flavor of rau ram and cilantro was not my favorite). But, at $16 a sandwich, it does make me miss the unparalleled banh mi's of Southern California. The Vietnamese coffee seems like a rift on Vietnamese coffee as it isn't made with a phin filter. The Saint Frank's espresso shaken with ice and condensed milk is an excellent dark roast and quick injection of energy (and sugar) to finish off the meal. I look forward to coming back to try more of their sandwiches and cookie offerings!

Award-winning chef, Charles Phan is best known for his bougie, break your wallet Viet food at The Slanted Door.   So when I read about his new sandwich shop with house-baked baguettes...   *TAKES DEEP BREATH*   $21+ Bánh Mì, here I come...   After tax, tip, and sf mandates...cuz San Francisco! Bánh mì is my fav sandwich and everything is made in-house so it's worth a try. I mean, nobody blinks an eye paying $15-$17 for an Italian hoagie...*shrugs*. Opening today is Phan's new sandwich shop, Chuck's Takeaway in The Mission. Takeout only. I got there 20 minutes before opening and there was already a line. You can order online (SpotOn) but it wasn't live when I checked. Staff wore masks properly.   M E N U Six sandwiches ($16 each): * Jo Jo's Bollito: Braised beef belly, salsa verde, fermented chili * CP'S #3: Chả lụa, pâté maison, chicken liver pâté, shallot mayo, soft herbs, cucumber, jalapeño * Wurster Hall: Eggplant, yuba cha, shallot mayo, mushroom pâté, soft herbs, cucumber, jalapeño * Tuna by Design (open-faced): Ollie's olive oil tuna, pickled shallots, wild arugula * Chuck's Egg Salad w/ pastured eggs, mustardy mayo, celery, chives * Mom's Meatballs: Pork meatballs, tomato sauce, cilantro Drinks ($4-$6): Tea, Viet coffee, and housemade sodas: tamarind, passionfruit, orgeat lemon. Cookies ($2 each): Chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin. 15% service charge but I didn't see it on the breakdown so I ended up tipping twice. F O O D * CP'S #3: Chả lụa, pork pâté, chicken liver pâté, shallot mayo, soft herbs, cucumber, jalapeño ($16) ***Requested extra mayo This is Phan's take on the traditional đặc biệt (combo) bánh mì with seasonal pickles served on the side, not inside. The house-baked baguette was warm and deliciously light and crackly on the outside, and airy soft on the inside. One of the best baguettes I've had for a bánh mì. The housemade chả lụa (steamed pork roll) was smooth and lean with the duo of pâtés adding a creamy, salty richness (not overly salty). I'm a heffer that loves mayo so the extra shallot mayo added additional creaminess with a touch of sweetness. It's finished with several slices of cucumber, jalapeño, and rau răm (viet coriander), mint, and cilantro for freshness, crunch, and a little heat. While the bánh mì was really good and you can taste the top-notch ingredients, I really missed the pickled carrots and daikon...inside. IMO, it's the quintessential sweet and sour component for a well-balanced bánh mì. A side of pickled greens is not the same.... All the Tommys shaking their fists right about now. S E R V I C E Cordial. My bánh mì was ready in about 18 minutes. A M B I A N C E Takeout only. Love the doggie portraits. P A R K I N G Street parking only. Overall, I appreciate all the housemade ingredients and it was a solid bánh mì but I need my pickled carrots and daikon, yo!

Chuck's Takeaway's menu is pretty straightforward - $16 SANDWICHES. That's all you need to know. (Also the automatic 15% service charge) A little too much for a sandwich? Well, Chuck's Takeaway takes pride in making all breads in-house. They use non-GMO flour and grains, wild caught seafood, pasture raised poultry, locally-sourced organic produce and dairy, and meat without hormones/antibiotics. They make their own pate, pork cha and many more. They do care for their employees by providing fair wage and healthcare. Justifiable? Maybe. Onto the FOOD - The CP's No.3. is a modern take on traditional banh mi. They put pate Maison, pork cha, chicken liver pate, shallot mayo, cucumber and jalapeño on VN baguette. Can I just say - this is now my MOST FAVORITE BAGUETTE in town! The bread has a light crisp on the outside that breaks easily as I held it for a photo. The inside was airy and soft that I was able to squish the sandwich into about 2 inches as I was finishing one half of it. The chicken liver was creamy and tasted pure; I just wish they put more. The pate Maison has a nice bite and light pork taste. Overall, the sandwich has that refined flavor profile that I didn't think could be made of a banh mi yet it lacks the crunch and contrast that pickled carrots/daikon give. Please consider consider making it and put it on the side if you must? :) The Jojo's Bollito is a braised beef belly with salsa verde on toasted bun sandwich. The beef belly has an interesting texture as it was a mix of meat plus tendon/stomach lining/tripe like white strips. You know that white chewy strip on 1 side of a beef cube or rib that you tend to discard? I don't know how else to describe it but that part was mostly what I got. It was soft in this case, as the braising made it so tender and the salsa verde provided some nice kick. I didn't like the bun in particular because it was soft that it soaked up all the beef and salsa juices and made it soggy. It was a mess to eat, because it wouldn't hold up the meat. Tbh, I was looking forward to be blown away. I know they used quality ingredients and all but it just wasn't a home run for me. The only thing I reallyyy loved was the VN baguette. I hope they plan to sell it because I know I'd be first in line if and when they do. :)

Talk about a quintessentially SF sandwich shop (both in quality and price). Chuck's Takeaway serves high end banh mi (and other sandwiches) with house made meats, freshly baked bread, seasonal pickles, and spritzers all from scratch. They also happen to sell some local ceramics as well as artisan sauces and condiments from various asian cuisines. I haven't had the pleasure of trying any of the food from the Slanted Door yet (which has been temporarily closed for years now), but when I read that the chef Charles Phan was opening a sandwich shop in the Mission I figured I had to try it out. My boyfriend and I ended up ordering three sandwiches and a spritzer to share. - CP'S no. 3 with pickled...cabbage? ($16): Their take on a higher quality banh mi. I was really impressed with the quality of the meats, which makes sense given that they make the pork sausage/pate in house. However, the fresh baked baguette really stole the show for this one. With a shatteringly light and crackly outside and a super soft and fluffy inside, this was probably one of the best banh mi baguettes I've ever had. I think overall, the sandwich as a whole was tasty and had amazing ingredients, but was a bit lacking in something I couldn't quite put my finger on... (maybe it needed more sauce? some pickled daikon?) I wasn't sure what the pickles on the side were, but they were really good as well. - Jo Jo's bollito with pickled romanesco ($16): This one came on a softer roll which I think was pretty fitting. It was honestly pretty greasy and messy to eat because every bite I took would ooze fat from the beef belly. Pretty tasty with a little kick from the salsa, although I could've used more of the pickles (which were delicious) on the side because of how fatty this one was. - Chuck's egg salad with bread and butter pickles ($16): Of the three sandwiches, this one was definitely the worst value (to put it nicely). I don't have a big appetite, and even I would not have been fully satisfied if this was the only sandwich I ordered. That being said, it was probably one of the best egg salads I've ever tried with deliciously soft and squishy milk bread and well seasoned filling. The sweet pickles paired really well with this one. - Passionfruit spritzer ($6): This is also house made I believe, and it was delicious and worth a shout out. Would definitely get this again The portions are pretty small and the prices are pretty steep (the two of us paid $60+ for three sandwiches), so I would probably not frequent this place given the value. But for a bit of a treat yourself lunch or a picnic with friends, I would say it's definitely worth trying if you're in the area.

Finally got a chance to try the hot new sandwich spot from Charles Phan. It's not an easy place to get to from where I live in the Richmond district, especially since it's only open on weekdays for lunch (what a life). Parking is not easy here either. Also, it's a "takeaway" spot, which means you are just grabbing to go (no tables, no bathrooms). That's a lot of factors which makes this place not a viable destination. When we finally got home 30 mins later, the sandwiches were awesome. We ordered the CP's No. 3, and the Mom's Meatball sandwiches. For the CP no. 3, this is the only "real" banh mi on the menu. The pork and pate were fantastic. You could REALLY taste the pate - it was slathered on. The other veggies, cucumber and jalapeno, were great (we actually ended up asking for extra of those two, which were a good call IMO). I didn't care for the cilantro (which I usually do in banh mis!) because it tasted very salty for some reason. I enjoyed the meatball sandwich too, although it got soggy in that long ride home. If I had eaten it there on the spot, I'm sure it would have been even tastier. On another note, I wish there were more "banh mi" type sandwiches. There's only one real one with real meat, the other one is mackerel, and the other vegetarian. I was hoping for a BBQ beef one, or something similar. All were $16, not including the 15% auto service charge. In general, I don't mind auto service charges at restaurants, but then on the ride home, I had time to think about it - what service are we really paying for? This is strictly a to-go place. All they did was hand me my bag. They didn't even give me napkins (those are self-serve on the side). They were very friendly and attentive though. Thought I saw Mr. Phan myself, but double checked with the look alike, and found out that it wasn't him at all. Bummer! Has anyone ever seen him in person working at either of his restaurants?! Anyway, had he been there in person, that would have been well worth the 15% surcharge. Would I return? Yes, if in the area, not worth the drive though. Delicious sandwich, somewhat worth the money if you're the type of person that can enjoy good quality food.
