Came here to celebrate my birthday dinner. The restaurant is nice and the ambience was cute, romantic with dim lighting. There is a cold draft so bring a sweater. For a Tuesday night this place was crowded so be sure to make reservations. The food was good. We ordered the calamari, super crunchy shrimp roll, the bronzed grouper, and the gulf fish parmadine. I read reviews raving about the sushi but it was mediocre, nothing special about it. Our dishes were delicious and the combination of sides they come with complimented the seafood very well! The food is fine and the ambience is decent, but we probably won't be back. Went for a family dinner on a Sunday in October - not a game day, not a UA family weekend, and the place was not full. The service was soooo sloooow - like almost an hour from ordering to delivery of food. There was really no explanation or apology. We finally made it to famous Chuck's for a recent date night. We had several friends tell us this is the best sushi in Birmingham area, so came with high expectations. The ambiance and service were both wonderful, no complaints there. I like that it was both upscale and not super fussy, some people were dressed up, some not so much, yet it didn't take anything away from the ambiance. Our drinks were good, nothing incredible but nothing to complain about either. We enjoyed the calamari appetizer with Szechuan sauce and peppers. A bright point of our visit. Our sushi was good, but not exceptional in my opinion. A lot of the rolls are very Americanized.. which is to be expected to some extent. The fish tasted fresh, but the combination of ingredients in the rolls wasn't anything too creative or impressive. I may be a bit of a harsh judge, I've been lucky enough to enjoy really wonderful sushi in Hawaii, NYC, LA, etc. For that reason it was difficult for me to choose what to order. I got a Dat roll and my husband got the meatloaf roll and octopus nigiri . We opted for the Oreo cheesecake for dessert which was very tasty, well presented, and a good portion. All in all it was a nice date night and we may or may not be back. I do really appreciate that they use locally sourced fish from the gulf caught from hook and line. Sustainability is very important to my husband and I. For that reason, we probably will go back to try more of the menu. I'm not sure why, but it overall just felt like something was missing between the cocktails and the sushi. For that reason I would hold back one star. read more

The cuisine at Chuck's is always fabulous! The seafood always fresh from the Gulf. Last Friday, we dined with good friends who love the Cowboy Sushi. We tried it and were so surprised! Very unique sushi, made with steak! We shared the Snapper Throats as well. Incredible flavor and stunning presentation. I enjoyed the house made Braised Beef stuffed pasta which was served with jumbo gulf shrimp on top. Amazing! My husband really enjoyed the Chorizo Shrimp Fettuccine. Incredible. Mother's Day dinner and everything was delicious. We started with the fried green tomatoes. Our table had the snapper, grouper and the stuffed shrimp. The only thing we didn't enjoy was the vegetable of the day the Brussel Sprouts -should have subbed (but that may just be us). We didn't save room for dessert. But it looked wonderful. As a fan of fresh seafood and sushi, Chuck's Fish was at the top of my list for places to try in Birmingham. I did make a reservation in advance- which you can do either via phone or online at Resy. Upon arrival, the host stand was very kind and welcoming as well as our server. The table is given fresh water (which stays at the table with you in a cold glass container) which I really enjoyed because I go through water fast! I ordered the crunchy shrimp roll, miso soup, and ginger salad. I'll be honest, I was surprised at just how good everything was. Fresh, tasty, and worthy of a return visit. We waited for them to open like several others it seems. Staff was warm and welcoming. We sat outside to enjoy the weather. Our server was outstanding and ran smoothly to obtain whatever we needed. The Gumbo and fresh bread were perfect starters. The Ribeye and Stuffed Shrimp arrived extremely quickly and hot! That the advantage of eating out early huh? The facilities were clean, the tables inside filled up very quickly. As much as I tried, I couldn't finish my shrimp so it was delicious as a midnight snack. Literally a midnight snack since dinner had been 7 hours ago. There was just enough steak left over for an egg/cheese/mushroom/onion/pepper/guacamole wrap. The steak was extremely tender even after a few minutes in the stir fry. The mashed potatoes leftovers were microwaved and eaten on the side. If I still lived on 280 I would eat at Chuck's often. This place is so cute! I went in for brunch with my friend-girl Sunday and it was FABULOUS! I had the French toast, which I highly recommend. I also had the beignets. They were really good with an orange sauce. WARNING - These are not New Orleans beignets. They will hold you over until you get back New Orleans though. They really were divine! I tried my friends avacado toast which is served with a pico de gallo. Tell me, how can something so simple taste so gosh darn good! She had the chicken and gravy w/no complaints. Chuck's is definitely the best seafood option in this part of Birmingham. With the exception of Highlands Bar and Grill and Automatic, Chuck's is likely my favorite option in Birmingham! Their food is always incredibly flavorful and fresh. They have a great sushi selection as well! The only problem is that service can be incredibly slow and inattentive. If they successfully solved this issue, I would undoubtedly give them a five-star rating! Gumbo (5/5): A personal favorite of mine is the gumbo. It comes in both an appetizer and entree portion. It is always a safe and filling option. It is meaty, hardy, and delicious! Ginger Salad (5/5): I really have to recommend the Ginger Salad. It is unquestionably the best salad option. It is not on the main menu as it is a sushi item. Their dressing really sends the flavor of this starter apart. It is always crisp and fresh. If you are looking for an exceptional salad with great flavors and texture, please order this! Seafood Platter (5/5): For your first time at Chuck's I must insist on ordering the seafood platter. This entree will allow you to sample an array of items that effectively define the Chuck's experience. You will receive two bacon-wrapped stuffed shrimp (my favorite item on the menu), two large scallops, blackened fish, Brussels sprouts, and basmati ginger rice. Everything is delicious and you will certainly not leave hungry. Fish of the Day (5/5): The best thing about the fish of the day is the number of ways you can have it cooked. If you are uncertain about anything on the menu, or you simply can't decide, getting the fish of the day is a good decision! Avocado Roll (4/5): Their sushi rolls are very flavorful and fresh but the portions are slightly smaller than what some guests may be used to. Their pieces are small but I can assure you they are very flavorful. You can taste the difference in quality! Any of their sushi options are reliably tasty! Eel Roll (5/5): This is my favorite roll. Their eel is so tender and it practically melts in your mouth! If you are looking for a consistently and surprisingly exceptional seafood option in Birmingham, Chuck's will surely meet or exceed expectations. Chuck's Fish is a very nice seafood and sushi restaurant. Personally I think they have the best sushi I've tried in Birmingham! My recommendations are the DAT roll and TNT roll. I was even impressed with the ginger they served with the sushi, it just tasted fresher to me. The servers were great and attentive. First I thought you had to dress up to go here.. me in a dress all proper next to the hostess table waiting to be greeted and out walks and lady with a ball cap on and jeans, then a dude in grey sweatpants. I loved all the tvs over the sushi bar showing fish and images of places I'd much rather be than Birmingham. We had a very attentive waitress and a bonus waitress being trained. Im pretty sure our waitress could recite the entire menu without looking. She had recommendations and opinions when we asked for them, she was a true gem to the establishment. We didn't want for anything the second you took your last sip in your cup she magically appeared like a drink fairy. We started off with the Asiago bread (I'm allergic to shellfish so I didn't have many options) it was AMAZING.. like what in the world did I just eat can I have another order amazing. ((Yes we ordered two)) Calamari was on the table as well and everyone else seemed to love it. We ordered steak, fish and sushi as meals and everyone was pleased. Apparently the "cowboy" sushi roll is one not to miss as everyone else on the table loved it. Apparently this is one of the best places to visit in Birmingham so after a year I decided to give it s go. We only experienced the sushi menu but all of the entrees looked amazing. The backdown roll was a bit disappointing for my tastebuds however the waiter and manager quickly took care of that and replaced it with a tempura roll of my choice. They also provided a sweet glaze for dipping that was delicious. Spring rolls are a must have however you only get two per order, and the white chocolate bread pudding is phenomenal.
