We went to Salt & Light for Sushi immediately after landing in Gonzales because we were starving,…read moreand it turned into one of the best date nights we've had in a long time. We met the owner, Shelly, who is originally from China, and she was incredibly warm and welcoming. What really surprised us was that they served us fresh wasabi instead of the usual paste -- I've never had that before, and it was amazing. Once you try it fresh, you can never go back. Our server, Dashay, was fantastic -- kind, attentive, and just such a lovely young woman. We started with hot sake and Kirin draft beer, then ordered a spicy tuna roll and a hamachi (yellowtail and scallion) roll, both of which were excellent. We also had tempura -- the batter was a little thick for my personal taste, but the sauces were so good that it still hit the spot. My favorite dish was the ama ebi (sweet shrimp), especially because they bring out the fried shrimp head, which was crispy and delicious. The sushi was fresh, well-prepared, and beautifully balanced. Between the amazing food and the genuine hospitality, we had such a wonderful evening. I can absolutely see why this is Parker's favorite sushi spot in Gonzales. Highly recommend, and we'll definitely be back.

So my interaction with the cashier was at a minimum. However, my visit on Saturday was horrible. I did not place a to-go order because it was only for me. So I had time to waste. The gentleman taking the order was very rude, his customer service sucked. He seemed to be in a rush and had no entrance in waiting on me. I know I ordered cheese shrimp, but somehow he heard cheese chicken. I wasn't even a receipt until after I had gotten my food or I would have seen it before. I am new to the area, and I am trying to feel my way around the town. But this is a place I will not visit again. The food was not great at all. They had a buffet that looked as tho they offered a variety of options. But still isn't enough for me to return.

The food wasn't as bad as some reviewers have said. No complaints. The man working there who may own the place was friendly. Also the drinks in the case were ice cold which surprised me as those sorts of coolers usually keep them mildly cold at best. While I was there, there was a table of manual labor workers and a young lady came in to order something to go. We added an order of egg rolls and that was tender with just the right cook on them not to crunchy but still good flavor. The menu here is very vague with not very many options for sides or combinations. As for the food itself, it is not very appetizing, especially for the outrageous prices. Not to mention that I received the wrong meal altogether after relaying specific instructions on what I wanted. To make matters worse, delivery takes forever and although it has nothing to do with the establishment itself, I unfortunately had the pleasure of having a Door-dasher who is a heavy smoker, leaving all of my food to smell like cigarette smoke.
