Compared to its flashy Chubby Group counterparts, Chubby Curry sits quite unassumingly on a street in Downtown Covina. The inside, however, is very cool. The restaurant makes impressive use of its narrow space. The ground floor is reminiscent of a diner, featuring counter seating and a row of booths. The upper floor has more tables and a bar. Various anime figures line the shelves and kitschy games lie scattered throughout the countertops. Despite the name "Chubby Curry," the menu is quite expansive. Rice bowls, handrolls, burgers, sashimi, and various katsu dishes are also available. The curry is seasoned well, but what really stands out to me is the Wagyu, featured in both the Wagyu Curry and the Wagyu Steak Rice Bowl. The sliced beef steals the show - the texture is amazing. Personally, I like the Wagyu Steak Rice Bowl more than I like the Wagyu Curry. I was so impressed on my first visit, that I visited two more times within the span of a couple weeks to try other things on the menu. The katsu is very good. It's perfectly crispy, yet moist and juicy. It's also hefty - a very generous portion. I added pork katsu to my Oyakodon, and it ended up being enough food for like two people - which is great! With the katsu, the Oyakodon is $22-$23, depending on what protein you get. Considering how much food you get, I think this price is reasonable. Without the katsu, the Oyakodon is only $14, and is delicious on its own. I also liked the Aonori Waffle Fries. In hindsight, I should've seen it coming, but in the moment, I was really surprised that they came with a curry dipping sauce. I wished that I had gotten them with the Wagyu Burger. The Wagyu Burger was ok, but I've had better. I wouldn't say it was dry, but it wasn't as moist and tender as I was expecting. Maybe a tad overcooked? And without that juiciness, the burger fell a little flat. I wished that I had the fries so I could pair the curry sauce with the burger to make it a little more interesting. I also thought the burger was a bit small. I was still a little peckish after eating it - yet another argument for the fries. The fries should honestly just come with the burger. I thought that the sushi was mediocre at best. The blue crab handroll was just ok - I've had better for less money. The toro sashimi was fine - not fishy, but not necessarily super fresh. I wouldn't get sushi again at Chubby Curry, but its inclusion on the menu didn't make much sense to me in the first place. And of course, I had to try the bar. I liked my cocktail. I got the Heiwa Tsuru-ume Kanjuki Nigori - an umeboshi and peach cocktail. I was expecting it to be salty and sour, but it was surprisingly refreshing and sweet. As far as service, there was one incident where my group ordered chicken and pork katsu. The server brought out our food and was like "uhh I forgot which was pork and which was chicken, sorry." I felt this situation could have been handled better because that kind of negligence could be serious if we had dietary restrictions. It was also annoying for us because we had to figure out which was which on our own. I don't know what the server/food runner's name was, but he had medium-long shaggy hair. Another time, I had really good service. I requested to sit upstairs and the servers complied with my request even though they really didn't have to. I did not feel like my service quality was compromised by sitting upstairs. The servers were still attentive and very nice. Overall, I really liked Chubby Curry. Prices are a bit high, but portions are proportional and the food quality is high for the most part. Service is also generally good. read more

Stopped in for a late weekday lunch after 1pm and was pleasantly surprised by how quiet and relaxed it was--a perfect escape from the usual rush. I was also happy to be able to redeem some membership awards, which made the visit even better. The ingredients are impressively fresh, especially in their sushi selection. But the true star of the show is undoubtedly their curry sauce. It has a sweet, aromatic fragrance and a perfectly balanced thickness that's delicious even with rice alone. I tried it with their signature tonkatsu pork chop, which was crispy, juicy, and absolutely delicious. This was a satisfying, well-executed meal from start to finish. read more

Chubby Curry - Signature pork tonkatsu curry rice - Japanese Curry Near Me - Covina, California

Went to Chubby Curry on a Sunday evening and had a great experience. The space has an awesome Japanese vibe with all the wood accents, plus the plastic food displays that really add to the atmosphere. The dining room is definitely smaller than the other Chubby concepts, but I actually liked that. It felt cozy and comfortable rather than crowded. Service was excellent. Ordering on the iPad was easy and smooth, and the staff was attentive without hovering. I ordered the Wagyu curry, and it was exactly the kind of comfort food I was craving. The Wagyu slices were rich and flavorful, and the stewed beef in the curry was so tender. The curry sauce was great. It was thick, smooth, and savory. Slightly sweet, very comforting, and packed with umami without being heavy or greasy. Others in my group got the chicken katsu curry, and it looked fantastic. The katsu was super crispy on the outside while staying moist and tender inside. The chicken was well seasoned all the way through, not just in the breading, which made a big difference. Someone else ordered the gyudon, and it had crispy onion bits mixed in. I've never seen that in gyudon before, but the added crunch worked really well and made each bite even more satisfying. So good, can't wait to get it again. read more

Loved our dining experience at Chubby Curry! Tyler gave a superb service, he was friendly and welcoming. Thanks for the recommendation on the house made hot sauce, we are spicy lovers and that sauce was spicy and tasty at the same time. We ordered the medium chicken curry and the chicken was not dry. The curry was delicious, the veggies cooked well. As for the wagyu beef bowl, wow, that was a terrific dish. The beef was flavorful and tender and juicy at the same time. The egg on top was perfect. Overall highly recommend Chubby Curry! read more

Honestly very disappointed with this meal. The meat was not tender at all -- especially the so-called wagyu, which was chewy and lacked the rich flavor you'd expect. It definitely didn't feel like real quality wagyu. For the price, this is not acceptable. The portion and taste simply don't match what they're charging. There are way better places offering higher quality at the same or even lower price. Would not recommend and won't be coming back. read more

We decided to eat a Chubby Curry after our session at Color Me Mine. It was a Thursday night during dinner time and were seated immediately. We ordered through a tablet the Wagyu Curry, Chicken Katsu curry, Wagyu steak rice bowl and a fresh lemon prune fizz fiesta drink. Also, since I am a member, we got a free round of miso soup for the entire table. For the wagyu curry, the beef was tender and it had a good curry flavor. We got medium so it was a little too spicy for some of us in our group. The chicken katsu curry was ok too. The chicken breast meat actually wasn't dry so that's a plus. The Wagyu steak rice bowl was a downer though. The wagyu beef didn't come out medium rare (barely any pink). It was overcooked or maybe it was sitting there for a long time and they reheated it? Not sure what happened there so we didn't enjoy it as much. The drink menu looked interesting too so I decided on the fresh Lemon prune fizz fiesta. It basically tasted like sprite with lemon. I didn't really like it and definitely not worth the price. Overall, the meal was a bit underwhelming for the price we were paying. The meats didn't melt in my mouth for being wagyu. Service was good. They came to confirmed our order and helped me check my membership and checked in on us. It's located in Downtown Covina so there is street parking and some public parking lots around. The interior was decorated very Japanese style and even had food displays in the window. The place is small though with a few booths and counter space. I did see people going upstairs so maybe they have more sitting area upstairs? That's very Japanese like as well. read more

Nice vibe, have upstairs seating too. Server was very kind. Tablets are used to order. Meat portion was underwhelming for what you pay for, curry was ok Fries had an interesting curry infused sauce that I think is good to try for sure. I think a good solid normal sauce is better but still decent. Value proposition was disappointing given the brand name unfortunately you could say expectations were higher or maybe it was on point - in the sense that they may not give great portions. $23 and look at the meat! Better to get the non wagyu option for the curry at least. read more

We stopped by for lunch on a Monday to give this place a try. The staff were friendly and the ordering was done thru a tablet. They had several options of curry with rice and unique hand roll menu. We got the wagyu curry and the pork cutlet curry. The curry was very smooth but a little light on the flavor. The wagyu meat was soft and tender. The pork cutlet was thick and crispy. Overall the food was good and excellent for those who do not like overly salty foods. Street parking was easy for us but not sure how it is on a crowded weekend. Thank you! read more

I enjoyed the location this chubby curry is in. It's in a cute downtown vibes area and parking was super easy when I came for dinner on a weekday evening. Best of all, the parking was free. There was no wait when I came and was able to get seated right away. I ordered the curry katsu with medium spiced curry. I thought the dish was delicious but I wish there was a mild option. Usually Japanese curry is not as spicy so I was not expecting such a kick in the medium level, but it was quite spicy! read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars strictly for the burger. The burger is a wagyu beef treat! It's thick, meaty, and juicy! Easily one of the best burgers I've had in recent memory. It comes in a delicious and soft bun, and covered in a curry sauce with melted cheese (cheese is an extra $3). The burger is pricey but worth it. The service is quick. You order on an iPad and they get the meal to your table in no time. The ambiance is kinda friendly, but not super friendly. The parking is dependent on the time of day because it's on the main strip of the area where it's located. I highly recommend trying the burger when you're looking for something special. read more

First time here, and we had a great experience! My wife, son, and I came on a Monday afternoon. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated right away. They give you a tablet to order your food, and you can send it directly to the kitchen as you go. Super convenient and unique. It let us take our time to browse the menu and order at our own pace. We ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry and Wagyu Katsu curry, both were fantastic! The curry was rich, flavorful, and absolutely mouthwatering. The chicken was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of breading. The Wagyu was juicy and tender. We also tried a few hand rolls, Tuna and Yellowtail, and they were excellent as well. Definitely planning to come back. I heard their Wagyu burger is a must-try, so I'll be ordering that next time, along with the waffle fries! read more

I've known that this is the sister restaurant of Chubby Cattle so I've always been curious to try it out. We came in on a Sunday night. I joined the waitlist online but there was no wait when we arrived and we were seated immediately. There's a touchpad at each table where you can place your orders. Once you send your order to the kitchen someone comes to your table to confirm the items that you got. I ordered the Gyu-Don ($18) and I've also tried the Chicken Katsu Kare ($21). The curry was very good however I wish that they gave more of the curry sauce. I feel like there was only enough for either the rice or the chicken katsu separately but not the whole plate. The chicken katsu itself was good though. It was still tender on the inside but the outside was super crispy and crunchy. I actually really liked the gyu-don, maybe even more than the chicken katsu. It had a ton of the beef flavor to it and you also get some pickled ginger and a poached egg on top. It came out super hot and there was a ton of the meat on top. The bowl was pretty big and I was struggling to finish the whole thing, but I did it. Service was quick and you can use the touchpad to call them over if you need anything. They brought us over some clean plates so that we could share our dishes, and they also made sure that our water cups were filled. It was easy to get the check since there's a button on the touchpad specifically made for that, so we were in and out of the restaurant pretty quickly. Overall my visit was great and I would love to come back to try some more items on their menu. The waffle fries looked good but I'm not sure if I could justify spending $9 on them. read more

Came here for an early dinner, ordered the wagyu rice plate and wagyu steak curry rice. The steak rice had a light but noticeable bbq flavor, a poached egg, Japanese red pickled radish, green onions, and butter. We also added corn on the side and mixed it in! The wagyu was cooked very well and paired together perfectly! Was full, but couldn't stop eating it! The Wagyu steak curry rice was also very delicious and reminds me of a mapo tofu, but with curry flavor! Not overly thick, and has very good aromatics and taste. During a trip to LA, I stopped by Chubby Curry in Beverly Hills, and this place seriously exceeded my expectations. It's casual, quick, and surprisingly elevated for a spot specializing in comfort-style Japanese curry. We started with the waffle fries, and they were addictively crisp, golden, well-seasoned, and perfect for dipping into the curry. I can never say no to fries The cucumber and radish salad was a refreshing contrast to the heavier dishes. Crisp veggies with a clean, tangy dressing, which was a great palate cleanser for the meal. Now for the stars of the meal: the Wagyu Steak Rice bowl and the Chubby Curry Wagyu Steak Rice. Both were phenomenal. The wagyu was tender, flavorful, and cooked just right, with that buttery texture you expect from good-quality beef. The regular rice bowl keeps things classic and comforting, while the curry version adds that signature Chubby Curry. The combination of tender wagyu soaked in their creamy, mildly spicy curry sauce is insanely good. Portions were solid, service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. If you love wagyu, Japanese curry, or just want a satisfying meal in Beverly Hills that won't disappoint, Chubby Curry is absolutely worth the stop. I'll be back to try more! read more

Soooo yummy! Been looking for a curry place since curry house closed, and this was it! Surprisingly, I was able to make a reservation via Yelp on Mother's Day about 3 hours before dinner time. Amazingggg! Got there and it looked small but there is a second floor of seating area so they got space for sure. There are kids menu and menu for everyone, but we went with tonkatsu curry w/ rice, wagyu curry, and beef don (for the kids). Everything was very flavorful and even with no spicy, there is a hint of the natural curry spices to it. I wouldn't get the wagyu because it was just ok in my opinion. Beef don was bomb, kids loved it and finished the bowl between 2 of them. They gave us chocolate covered strawberry at the end of our meal for Mother's Day and I thought that wa such a sweet gesture! Would definitely come back again! read more

I've ordered from this place on UberEats several times, and every time has been amazing! The food always arrives fresh, hot, and nicely packaged. My fave is the Chicken Katsu Kare. I love that they separate the katsu from the curry so it stays perfectly crispy. The curry is rich, flavorful, and comforting every time. I've also had the Wagyu Rice Bowl, which was incredible. The wagyu was super tender and juicy. Then the Unagi Roll was fresh and delicious, and the Gyu-Don was tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Good thing they have the live waitlist you can join on the app. Saves so much time! Parking is pretty accessible here, but located in downtown Covina. I thought the restaurant was pretty small at first, but there's actually an upstairs! The upstairs was actually very spacious, and can even hold a long table for parties. We ordered the classic tonkatsu kare and my bf got the wagyu curry. We ordered the waffle fries and kaarage to share. The waffle fries were definitely very worth it! Great portion size and the crisp and taste was pretty nice. Interesting use of curry dip that they have too, which was pretty good! The kaarage is part of their new menu and I thought it was pretty good too! Although, I do feel like even though it has some nice crunch, the chicken itself is too soft? It's meaty but also not meaty... but overall still pretty decent. Something I wouldn't get again though. Next came the entrees, which the portions are very filling! I actually didn't even finish mines. The spice level to the tonkatsu is pretty mild to hot. It's the type of spice that slowly creeps up on you and your mouth starts burninggg. Really delicious though!! I tried my bf's dish and it's definitely very rich. The wagyu itself is very soft and the other meat (with butter) just tasted so flavorful! This one was reallyyy good. The curry on both plates were also very flavorful and nice creamy texture. Overall, food was delicious and service was nice! First time and really enjoyed the food. Personally a little pricey for lunch, IMO, but glad I tried it. Some of the portions are pretty large, so you can get away with a side of katsu for lunch if you're not a huge eater for $11-12. Beef curry will run you about $23. I ordered both and had leftovers. Buddy tried a few more dishes so we can try a little bit of everything and probably ended up ordering too much! Haha! Would I go back, for sure. The katsu was the stand out for sure. Crispy and tasty. The portion and price was a plus too. Next time I'll just go with the katsu curry, but had to try the wagyu beef curry my first time there. read more

It was one of these nights that I was craving Japanese food but I was lazy to drive. So, I placed an Uber eat order from Chubby Curry. I was very impressed with packaging. The food came in a thermal bag that had the restaurant's name. We ordered the following; - A little of everything & miso soup 5/5 This order was available only for online order. It came in two separate containers. The seaweed sheet was wrapped in a transparent plastic wrap around each roll. I removed it first, then wrapped it around the roll. It was crispy. We enjoyed the flavorful taste of the various rolls. The miso soup was perfect. - Waffle Fries with Aonori 5/5 Was crispy from outside and soft from inside. The aonori sauce was really good and added unique taste to the fries -Wagyu Dumplings with ponzu sauce It was very flavorful and moist. - Chicken Katsu Kare 5/5 The packaging was amazing. They put each ingredient in a separate container. They write the direction on the container how to mix them. It was heavenly and the amount was generous. - Crab Cream Croquette 5/5 It was crispy from outside, and very creamy and rich from inside. It literally melted in my mouth. The food was outstanding. I've been wanting to try this place for so long and my bf and I were finally in the area so we got to try it. It was quite difficult to find as it's in downtown but we figured it out. There's some parking in the front on the street, but there is also more parking in the back as well. Upon entering, we were really amazed with the decor. It's really pretty and well decorated. Felt like we were in Japan tbh. We were seated right away and were given the iPad to place our order. The gentleman brought us water immediately. My bf got the wagyu curry while I got the chicken katsu curry. Wagyu Curry: the depth of flavor was definitely there. The potatoes and carrots that were in there really elevated it. Some of the meat was a bit tougher than others, but it didn't take away from the overall enjoyment. He got level 3 spicy, which was pretty spicy. Definitely helps clear the sinuses if you need it lol Chicken Katsu Curry: the best katsu I've had, hands down. The chicken was super tender and fried to perfection. It was not dry at all. The side cabbage salad it came with was also so good. I loved the sesame dressing that was used. The potatoes and carrots were also so yummy as it soaked up the curry flavor. My bf and I both loved the portions. It wasn't too little and the rice ratio was really good! I typically always have rice leftover but not enough katsu, but I was actually left with extra katsu at the end! Service was great. The server, Justin, was attentive and checked in on us and refilled our drinks without being asked. Overall it was an amazing meal. We will definitely be back. read more

A good friend shared this spot for the tasty food and today was the day. If you are looking for a great spot to spoil your wife or impress a favorite girlfriend You HAVE got to take them to Chubby Curry. Parking can be a pain but the free public structure is less than a block east or just across Citrus from Chubby. We got lucky and found a parallel parking spot almost in front of the restaurant. We walked in on a Saturday and were met by a very nice young man who advised he would escort us upstairs. Now let me say the restaurant's downstairs dining room was impressive enough. You can watch the grill master as he makes Wagyu burgers through a clear partition. Upstairs was like a classy hidden Gem! Like a 1930s Era speak easy tucked away with a sushi style bar and quaint booths. A clean private bathroom on this floor was helpful. The decor is gorgeous and then the fun starts. Our greeter was our server, He stayed with us like a personal valet. He brought out a tablet to order on and after a quick tutorial we were sending orders to the chef ourselves while he poured ice cold Asahi and waters. Spicy tuna handroll, no rice demanded my favorite food critic, the wife. She later proclaimed this to be an amazing handroll compared to others she has tried elsewhere. Spicy and fresh with a tiny crunch from fried onions. Appetizer Miso soup was wonderfully tasty and hot. I ordered Katsu Curry and asked for medium spice hoping it would be hot enough. Perfectly pressed bowl shaped tender rice with tender pork Katsu and condiments. Our valet brought dinnerware and plates to share our dish, even the chopsticks are made with quality and detail in mind. Nice touch.. The Curry was so tasty and that medium spice did a sneak attack and I was very pleased as my first bite made me crave more heat. As the Curry dish was so large I asked for a To-Go container. The container was nice and came with the classiest bag I have seen east of Beverly Hills. The Chubby Group of retaurants have my vote! We shall be back again. read more

Ambiance - Feels like Japan. The decor inside is quite nice. Lanterns, anime figures, colorful sake bottles. Table I sat on wasn't wiped well but I notified them and they very quickly with apologies cleaned it up. Good customer service and both servers we encountered ares very friendly and attentive Parking - behind the building is a medium sized lot with ample parking space and along the street. It gets a little busy on the weekends according to staff but there is always parking. Food - Wagyu dumplings with Ponzu while on the smaller size have excellent taste and the ponzu along with green onions really give them a warm but fresh flavor. Chicken Katsu Kate - the fry breading on the chicken rivals Midoh when it comes to quality, crispness, and not dried out. The curry even non-spicy has a tiny bit of spicy. Medium was crazy hot. I don't care to ask how hot max spicy is lol. Mushroom side - is one large mushroom diced into three pieces and fried. While good I wouldn't recommend this unless you really like it. Didn't try any sushi this time, maybe next time. Service - excellent, servers are fast and very active. Value - a bit on the expensive side vs. portion. But quality is top notch so it's worth it. I highly recommend this place. read more

My husband and I came in for a late lunch. There was only one other party dining at the time, seated just before us. The interior felt cozy, with bar seating and booths available, and you can watch the chef cook through the glass, which was a nice touch. Our food came out quickly. I ordered the chicken katsu kare, which came with carrots and potatoes. The chicken was juicy and crisp, though the vegetables were a little toothsome. The curry itself didn't quite wow me, but it was still satisfying overall. We also tried the Wagyu burger, which was tender and nicely fatty, and the fries from the happy hour menu--served hot and crispy. The yellowtail hand roll was another highlight. The star of the meal was definitely the shaved snow--the best I've had locally in a while. The texture was fluffy, creamy, and light. I'd honestly come back just for that. The main downside was the ordering system. Like other Chubby locations, you order from a tablet, but it seemed glitchy during our visit. Our orders got mixed up with the other party's, but our waitress double-checked everything and helped sort it out. Every street cart, taco shop, upscale restaurant has a best of show. I would easily give a street cart 5 stars if I thought it was the best street food. That is this place. The decor and ambience are all perfect for what this place is, a curry shop. And what a curry shop it is. Let's cut to the meat of the matter, the chicken katsu. A light and crispy outer coating and a perfectly portioned, juicy piece of chicken. Outstanding. The curry coated the Katsu just right and was flavored for kings. This was one of the best curry dishes I had. It was presented as all curry dishes should, with a nice serving of rice, pickled radish and cabbage. Before you read the other reviews just know they give you a side to leave a good review- Honestly, Chubby Brand should just stick to BBQ. It's like someone tried to make a curry restaurant without ever having been to one. I don't think a place calling itself "curry" should have rainbow rolls. A curry restaurant shouldn't have plastic spoons, especially for 23-30 dollar entrees. Why is the side of pickled radish 3 dollars. The curry tasted like it came out of a box mix. The tonkatsu was hard and dry. The shredded cabbage was thick. The "wagyu beef curry" tasted like a normal beef stew. I think the main crime here is the restaurant not knowing if it wants to appear niche and classy or fast casual. Because why are we playing clubbing music. read more
